Christmas is over an I've just got the VW Westy out of storage, planning our first trip out - hopefully soon. We love our camping - I either go with Tracy ,my wife, or I do the "dad" thing and go on a surfin'/fishin' break with my son. Whichever, we use our Type 2 Westy for camping not posing (don't ever get a splitty - overpriced and too impractical).
The point of that preamble is that, apart from sharing the magic of VeeDubs, I also want to share the secret of Lower Pennycrocker and Brian Heard's little piece of camping Nirvana.
I/we have stayed here several times. I hesitate to recommend it as I don't want it to get so overcrowded that I can't get in. And we DON'T WANT IT TO CHANGE. Yes the shower block is basic BUT it's kept clean, stocked with what you need (if you get my drift) and the showers themselves are hot and powerful - best I've used at any price. The site is quiet and calm. The views are stunning (contact me by e-mail and I'll send you a photo of a sunset that'll make your toenails curl). Boscastle is lovely, go out of season if you can.
The owners are charming, friendly and helpful. And it's a great bargain - because of the modest facilities and in spite everything else I mentioned. Do yourself two favours this year: 1. Buy a VW campervan 2. Go to this campsite. If you can't do 1), just do 2). - just don't take my spot!

A really good site the shower/toilet blocks were a little unkempt but Ive seen far worse. At this time of year the site was pretty empty and the only real downside was the very very high winds blowing in from the sea over the cliffs. The high winds kept on into the night and a goodnights sleep wast had all week. We were in a tent it maybe different in a caravan. Id would and probably will go back but a little earlier in the year. Boscaslte is approx 3 miles all down hill which towards the town get a little steep. I never saw a taxi, and Im told the buses will stop outside of there designated stops. They dont run after about 7:30pm though. If you fancy a scenic walk into Boscastle take a left out of the field and head for the big white house just after there is a cut through to coastal path. Sections of this are pretty tricky and there are a number of steep ascents and descents by steps, the walk took about and hour and 45mins. Places to eat are plenty, the cobweb for a nice bit of gammon or steak. The Riverside Hotel was excellent, you may have to book though. They also do a good breakfast. One thing you must do is go to the Wellington "The Welly" for the Buskas night on a Wednesday for Folk singing, the guy has a Great Voice. It kicked off about 9:30 10pm. They do some great food as well. The castle in TinTagel is also worth a visit, the birth place of King Arthur. Head for the Church "Seaside Parish" using the Road at the side of the Welly, carry on climbing as you pass the Battreaux resteraunt and bear left into the housing you can see the church at this point. You can aslo find the Methodist Chapel turning left on the junction were the Battreaux resteraunt is and it about 200yds on the left. At the back of the Church you can find the coastal path to the coastguard "lookout" and carry on along the path back into Boscastle. The Eden Project is about an Hour away depending on traffic.

Spent 7 nights here. Facilities basic but clean(ish), however very cheap and the views of the surrounding countryside and sea are spectacular, particularly as the sun goes down.
The farmer running the place is a very cheerful man, always smiling and talkative. Nearby sandy beach at Crackington Haven was brilliant for our two year old daughter, couple of reasonable cafes doing take away lunches as wel. Also handy for the more touristy areas of Tintagel and Boscastle, if that is your cup of tea and well located for some serious coast path walking (looking at the size of the hills you need be to dedicated).
On the whole as long as you don't want luxury then I would heartily recommend it.

Stayed at Lower Pennycrocker Farm for a weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. There was plenty of space, the site's fields mean it is naturally segregated so you can choose to be social or have a quiet spot, not that it was noisy anywhere on the site. Couldn't hear any traffic or other noise to disturb the tranquility of the place.
Brian is very friendly and chatty and made us feel welcome, which contributes to the relaxed feeling the site gives you.
The toilets were clean and we didn't have to queue at any time to use them. Washing up facilities were fine - sink, cold & hot water and a bin.
We went to Tintagel castle and beach which we thoroughly enjoyed and visited nearby Bude for some camping and non-camping shopping.

We meant to stay one night and ended up staying two. The shower block and toilets are what you would expect from a camp site, warm clean and working (the way I like it). Brian the owner is a very accommodating gentleman and friendly to boot. The view is amazing, you can see Boscaslte from every part of the site. It's quiet and peaceful (well when we're not there as a moany family found out, we're young and on holiday). I would suspect that in the earlier part of the year it's going to be freezing cold, because it's quite high up. Our guitarist came down with something so our journey was cut short. A site we will be going back to, at £4.00 each plus £2.00 electric hook up, it's a bargin. Don't take my word for it.

We stayed at Lower Pennycrocker Farm back in August. Due to our schedule, we only stayed one night, but had I known beforehand how good it was we would have stayed longer! It's true the toilet and shower facilities are basic, but they are perfectly usable and functioning. Anyway, the views from this site more than make up for it. Also the prices are so low (£4 pppn) that we considered our stay to be a real bargain. The proprietor is lovely, very laidback and friendly. The pitches are large and well spaced on flat ground. Boscastle shops are only a short drive away and the out of town location means it's very peaceful at nighttime. Highly recommended!

We intended to visit Snowdon but after my partner vowing her love of all things King Authur we switched to Lower Pennycrocker the night before departure. I was 50/50 about going to Cornwall for the second time in a year but this site has given me the impetus to go back as many times as possible.
It's true the shower block isn't 5 star and after talking with the owner Brian I understood his reasons for not providing a shower block worthy of CC standards. You go to this site for it's views and peacefulness and not to spend endless time in the showers or washing up. The showers are clean and along with tending to his animals Brian can be seen mopping out and stocking the shower block many times in a single day, which is three times more than some sites!
The site consists of two fields with the top field hosting mainly tents not having any electric hook ups. The lower field has electric and on a gentle to medium slope but sharing the same fantastic views as the upper field. The shower block is also situated in the lower field but because of the sites size it's never a trek even for the furthest pitch away.
Fees ae collected daily between 9.30 & 10.30 and arrival times are not restricted. In fact there are no restrictions and amazingly the site is a peaceful haven for it. 9pm can seem like 4am it gets that quiet on site with the only traffic being the odd camper going to the local shop by car or Brian collecting the rubbish by tractor each day. Bins are provided all around the site and never look more than half full. This was nice to see rather than the usual overflowing bins.
Boscastle is a three quarter hour walk away or 5 minutes by car. Tintagel and the island of King Arthur is a 10 minute drive away via Boscastle. Turn left out the campsite and keep going until the T junction. Turn right and stay on that road through Voscastle and beyond. When passing Bossiney and entering Tintagel the visitors centre grabs your eyes along with it's car park to the left. Look right and you'll see another car park that takes all vehicles/no height restriction for £1 per whole day. Theres another half way down the high street to the right but this can get busy and cramped to turn in.
King Arthurs hall is a good starting point for the story on king Arthur rather than read yourself silly and lose the whole plot. You can even sit on the throne whislt the show is on and well worth the time and small entrance fee. Then take the path to the church taking note of the slate wall hangings dating back to the 10th century. A short cliff walk away is Tintagel castle and the icing on the cake for me. It looks small but consists of 8 acres of land. Considering I had no interest in Arthur I ended up spending the whole day on the island taking a packed lunch and soaking up the stunning scenery. The only attraction I (along with other folk I met) regret paying admission for was the Autharian centre between Tintagel and the A39. We spent around 30 minutes there thinking it was an official site but seeing archealogical digs open to the elements and in a state similar to that of grave robbing it saddened our visit. The diggings should have been covered with tin roofing and with concise text explaining the works. Also, to see the stone that everyone comes to see you walk across two fields, across a stream, someones driveway, a wooded area and then another field. All this only to find out that the stone is most likely a head stone belonging to someone who fdied after Arthur in fact rampaged these parts!
Bude was 15 minutes away and Newquy 30. Launceston castle is 40 minutes away and worth the visit just for the view. As with most English Heritage attractions all Cornish sites seem to be free entry for members.
So for shops. In Boscastle there's a small shop just after the car park on your left. Car parking is the only option at 60p. Brian knows of a local shop but I forgotten to enquire further and this one doesn't have parking charges. Boscastle has one pub from what I could see called 'Napolean Inn'.
Tintagel has a Londis and Spar along with several pubs and eating houses. For quality and pocket eat at the Kingfisher resturaunt just beyong the 'old post office' to your right. Yummy home baked sweets and quality food at good portion sizes.
Theres no beaches to mention except for when the tide is out. I'd avoid them if with young children as a wide bay with one exit and an incoming tide spells disaster. Go to Bude for sand and drive straight up through the high street down to the bay. Parking is on your left when reaching the beach office building. There is also a 'Lido' at the southern end of the beach if the surf is too heavy for young children. Lifeguards are a plenty here and as with all Cornish poeople I come across as friendly and courtious as can be.
We'll be going back even if theres only one washing up sink and a little black spot in the showers. The people, the stars at night and simply the sites location does it for us. How soon? This weekend...............

What a fantastic place! Stopped overnight on Aug Bank Hol weekend and still loads of space. A warm welcome, with a casual, pitch anywhere, Brian will be round in the morning' attitude, really made a difference.
Two big fields, but for the best view try the field closest to the house; icredible sunset over Boscastle and ideal for stargazing with a bottle of wine!
Two words of warning, though. If you're planning to head into Boscastle for a wee tipple, book a taxi WELL in advance for both journeys. The taxis are few and far between, and the three mile walk is very hairy. The buses seem pretty random, too.
The second thing is that the showers and toilets are, frankly, a bit of a health hazard and polite queueing is a necessity. I would be happy to pay a couple of extra quid to go towards a block revamp.... In all, though, a fantastic place to chill out and relax!

First things first. The other reviews are right - the shower block is fairly basic and, yes, could do with a couple of extractor fans and an extra washing-up sink.
BUT.... hey, we are talking about camping here, NOT 5 star deluxe hotel stuff. (The showers themselves , by the way, are amongst the best I've used on a campsite anywhere).
The site location is great - 5 minutes from Boscastle / 15 minutes from Bude. It's quiet (except for the other campers of course!), and the views are good. The owner, farmer Brian Heard, is a really friendly man, and, as another reviewer says, not like some "breadhead" site proprietors.
Price? - 2 of us plus dog (free) in a VW campervan, with a hook up was £10 a night. I think this place is a little gem. Put up with the basic shower block and enjoy the location.

August 2004 As usual we plan our camping 2-3 days ahead based upon the forecast. Calling around the campsites in North Cornwall it seemed that most were full. For some reason Lower Pennycrocker Farm was available, and as in earlier reports, virtually empty.
A big plus for me was the absence of "mobile" homes ie large static caravans. It is a basic field or two, with a lovely rustic charm
The farmer who runs it clearly just loves to chat and is so different from many of the commercially minded people who run sites! He charges very little (£4 per adult, £2 per child). There are no complicated charges for extra tents etc, nor long lists of "Don'ts".
The loo block is an old Portakabin covered in shiplap planks so it looks like a shed. The big plus is very high pressure showers with what seems like lots of hot water. The loos seemed very clean (by this I mean the seats and the toilet bowls). However the overall internal ambiance of the shed is DAMP and mildewy, with vinyl flooring laid on top of (!) carpet, which must retain even more damp! Virtually all the windows are boarded closed for privacy He needs to understand the basics of physics and ventilation and accept that a cold but dry shed is better than a warm(ish) but damp one.
He needs to sort this out urgently and if he does he will have a fantastic site. My suspicion is that he is from a generation where camping is sleeping in a field and showers are a luxury. I come from a 2 bathroom house with power shower and have 3 teenage daughters for whom these things are VERY important. A simple thing he can do is to install ventilation and to removed the moisture from the shed. I suspect for a few grand he could completely overhaul it, charge 20% more and have the perfect site. Even by spending £200 he could install 5 or 6 electric fans in each part (men and women) and leave them on to suck the damp air out
All in all a successful and enjoyable visit.
