Planned and booked a weekend stay at Thriftwood but the weekend turned into a week, we just loved it. From the moment we arrived on site we were greeted so warmly, the receptionist was friendly and helpful. We were shown to a lovely pitch near the pool, pitches are well maintained and grounds are spotless. We made great use of the heated pool, showers and toilets were clean and tidy. Site is dog friendly with great woodland walks. The bar had a great atmosphere, we felt at home on the 1st night, also kept in touch with some lovely people who stay there full time. And bar was family friendly with great entertainment and served food which was ideal for us. Staff throughout our stay went out of their way to please us, nothing was to much trouble. Lots to do for the kids, games room / play park/ and lots to explore. Very safe as well CCTV and a barrier to get in and out so no need to chase the kids down constantly, relaxing and beautiful.
We also spent a day in London (a short train ride from Thriftwood). We liked it so much we are considering buying a seasonal pitch.

This was our first family camping trip as a family for a significant number of years, I sourced this site as it was not far away from home and also had a lot of facilities that were there if we required them.
I was disappointed in the first instance when completing their enquiry page, all I got was a what seemed to be an automated standard email saying to contact the site to confirm availability and prices.
That little niggle aside, booking the 2 nights was very easy with the confirmation being sent through to my email account that I had given within a few minutes.
Upon arrival booking in was also very easy, with the receptionist being very helpful. One thing to remember and budget for is the £10 refundable deposit required for the barrier/entry key.
We were shown to area for pitching the tent by a member of staff. One thing I would recommend before you site at this site is to ensure the tent pegs (rock pegs) are up to the task as this site is full of stones in the ground and on top, so you very well may have to clear a suitable area before pitching the tent. You are able to purchase rock pegs from the reception is you wish, I think they were about 8 pegs for £10.
To get to the facilities it is a brief walk - swimming pool, toilet and shower block.
The facilities are very well maintained and kept clean.
The swimming pool albeit average size is not manned, but the whole site is covered by CCTV.
All in all we had a very enjoyable experience and would recommend this site to our friends. We may be looking to further our camping experiences with this site next year. We may even look to use more of the facilities - club house and a very limited menu from the restaurant situated within the club house.

We arrived in pouring rain after several e mails ref vacancies. We spent 20mins in reception as booking system seemed to have glitch and wouldn't recognise postcodes etc. We were then given a pitch to go and find ('if there is someone on it pick another one')
The pitch given us had a caravan on it 1 of 4 in a row who were all together. Eventually sited and set up.
The group of vans mentioned earlier had a get together one night until 3am. Lots of clapping and singing.
The toilets didn't seem to have been cleaned regularly.
We were sorry to say a bit disillusioned after reading some write ups (some were negative) and we are not snobs

Pretty site with friendly staff. On arrival we were told to pitch where we liked within a field, rather sloped pitch, but not unmanageable.
Initially lots of space between tents (we stayed 3 nights), but then on day 3 a huge party were packed in around us, and with one night to go we had to move our car well away from the tent to avoid being blocked in.
The large group now surrounding our lone family tent explained that they had pre booked the whole area and were shocked to see us there (in their way!).
We did mention this at reception and were told it was a mistake that we were told to pitch where we liked, all seemed a bit disorganised.
On the upside the pool was lovely and warm, and the club house was a nice addition. As mentioned in other reviews take your rock pegs! Very hard ground.

We spent three weeks here last year and had such a lovely time we have now booked for another three weeks in the school holidays this year.
With two children aged 3 and 9 there was plenty to keep them entertained including a games room, swing park and lovely outdoor pool which even in the school holidays we had all to ourselves. Its so nice we are going to look into seasonal pitches.
The staff are friendly and helpful and certainly go out of there way to make sure your stay is enjoyable. The toilets and showers were cleaned everyday and the family showers are handy if you have young children. The bar was nice but to be honest we didn't use it that often but will try it next time.
Its a very peaceful and relaxing site even when there are children around playing!.

The site is very well situated and allows you to visit a variety of different areas. If you want to go South there is the south coast within an hours drive or London can be reached in 50 mins from Borough Green station. We are national trust members and used this on a couple of occasions with visits to the South Foreshore lighthouse in Dover, Knole Park and Bodiam Castle, which my kids loved.
The camp is very well appointed with ample showers and toilets which are OK. As per with all camp sites the cleaning could be better, but its clean enough if you time your visit right! The pool is a bonus, but it needs a warm day to use it. The water is fine, but the cold wind is not good.
Clubhouse is a little expensive for drinks but the food is reasonable. The Black Horse in the village of Stansted doesn't look much, but the food is good and reasonable.
The only thing I could moan about is the very hard ground and the fact that they don't tell you where to pitch your tent. Make sure you buy some hard ground pegs before you go. You will need them. We bent nearly 20 pegs when pitching.
With regards to the pitch, they pack you in and it's a bit of a free for all. We ended up surrounded, which was OK, but needed a little negotiating when the guy ropes were so close. The site should really define set pitches to allow people enough room to pitch and not be on top of each other. Not a major issue, but one to bear in mind.

Stayed here for 1 night in August and was shocked to be told it was £23 for one night which is the most I have ever paid
The 'bar' had no atmosphere and where they found the caterwauling 'entertainer' heaven knows. 'Never mind', we said, let's go to the pub which I checked when booking was still open. It was closed for a private function.
Toilet & shower block had been cleaned in the not to distant past. To be fair the sites were well laid out & roomy.
The staff seemed very disorganised.

We have just returned from a week's camping at Thriftwood. The campsite was very impressionable clean & tidy, shower & toilet blocks very very clean, as was the washing up area, plenty of hot water.
Had a few drinks mid week in club house, slightly cheaper than pub prices. Staff ( not just in club house) were most pleasant, helpful & polite, very friendly atmosphere.
Had a meal in the pub next door, excellent food, would definitely eat there again.
Great location & lots of places to visit locally, beautiful countryside drives.
Enjoyed it so much am now looking to purchase a static van on site.

Fabulous site! Really enjoyed my short stay on my youngest grandchildren's first camping trip. From the moment I requested a call back to the moment we left, the staff were so helpful and pleasant.
Didn't use the clubhouse as the kids are a bit young but we used the lovely warm pool, the woodland walk was well appreciated by my little dog and the kids, the play area was also tried out and the toilets and showers were nice and clean.
Will definitely visit again but with rock pegs as like the previous camper, my other's are all bent!
