My wife an I went here for the weekend to celebrate our wedding anniversary. This site is simply beautiful. From dusk till dawn this site is virtually silent. It can get windy, but that's nature for you. The tent field is large and flat with thick grass or there's a few pitches with hookup by the (very large) beach. The site has a campers kitchen which I think if it was too windy would give you a bit of respite. Dont be put off by the wind though. Its to be expected next to the Solway firth, but its not the worst wind we've experienced and as long as you make sure your tent is pitched well you have nothing to worry about.
The reception area has the shop and the showers etc included. The shop is reasonably stocked - you MUST try the bacon. Its the best ever. Not the cheapest of shops, but they do admit that themselves due to the location etc. The shower block is luxury. Your own shower/toilet/change area in the gents (coin operated but well worth it). The ladies have leather couches in them much to the delight of my wife. There is also a beautician/hairdresser on site and her prices are very reasonable. The spa that is on-site is the epitome of luxury and you can hire it out for your own exclusive use - again it isn't as expensive as you'd think.
Outside the site - the golf club has a restaurant and is open to non members although we didn't use it. Its a great base for touring the Dumfries and Galloway region and also Lakeland is only about 45 minutes away. Annan is the nearest town with a smattering of shops and cafes. It has a Tesco for stocking up supplies and if you like your designer clothing or even just need to get some more camping gear, Gretna gateway is about 10 miles away and has a lot of designer shops, a yeomans camping store and places to eat and drink.
Dumfries is about 20 minutes from the site and has a very big shopping centre and quite a few attractions. It does have a little farm with animals in it and there are some hilarious booklets about the animals and booklets about places to visit and see.
The site shop sells phenomenal bacon rolls and delicious hot chocolate. If you want a quiet chilled out break, this is the site for you. Its a little gem.

We used this site just for a one night stop over on a longer journey as it is only 20 minutes from the M74. Staff were helpful. We had a shore side pitch so the view was stunning. Loos and showers good (although you have to pay for the shower) and the laundry was good as well. There is a very small selection of books to swap. We walked along the huge beach, but it is muddy, so wellies or old shoes would be preferable. The golf course hotel is in walking distance, but we just had one drink there, not a meal. Will definitely use this site again for either a stop over or longer.

This is an amazing site.
It is situated next to a nature reserve so we were able to watch birds & butterflies in abundance. There are plenty of walks directly from the site on the beach, the foreshore or quiet roads.
We were allocated a shore side pitch which was larger than average and had interrupted panoramic views of the bay, electric hook-up and water directly next to the pitch.
The animal farm was cute and well laid out with an interesting free guide leaflet to explain things. There was lots of information in reception and the staff here were very helpful.
The showers and toilets were fantastic the best we had seen on our tour of Scotland they were immaculately clean at all times.
The shop was well set out in the reception area, stocked with essentials, some food items enough to make a meal, fresh bread & milk, ice creams, snacks, alcohol and newspapers were available to order.
However the very best thing about this site that makes it a 'little gem' was the attitude and friendliness of the owners and team. For example we had not booked as we were touring Scotland so we rang to check availability on the morning of our arrival and our call was returned promptly with a very friendly attitude. All the staff we met were more than happy to help make our stay as enjoyable as possible.
This is such a lovely site, the sun was shinning and we stayed here longer than we had planned.

If your looking for peace and quiet, this is the site for you. We have just returned from our third visit. The toilets are immaculate from morning to night.
The staff are all very pleasant and our dog loves the beach. One word of warning, wear old shoes to the beach as it is more mud than sand.
Felt the owners could have made a concrete path onto the beach, as we watched a few people slipping on the mud. Our only other minor complaint was we didn't know tv's had gone digital and ours didn't work, however we didn't really miss it as the weather was glorious and we spent more time enjoying the countryside.
We will definitely be going back again

Many thanks for these comments guys.
We are genuinely delighted when someone takes the trouble to review - good or bad - and at least we then have the chance to do something about it.
Looking at the points - because we're right on the coast the wind can be an issue here - our brochures have a picture of a dog with his ears back in the wind - and that just about sums us up!
You have to weigh that up with the superb open views of course.
As for children - our policy is that well behaved children and adults are very welcome - but as we say on all our literature and in bold on our web site - we are not a family park, we have nothing to keep children occupied. We have links from our website to parks locally that do cater for children - and they likewise refer back to us any guests looking for adult only areas.
We all feel it's better to have a happy guest on the right park than to pretend to be something you're not.
As for wifi - it is £10 for the calendar year. This was set to tie in with the daily rate on other parks - but to offer it for the whole year as a kind of loyalty thing - if you come back again in 2010 you'll get to use it in effect for free. We have a loyalty system for our regulars - but felt this was something we could do for new visitors. It seems to have backfired - just today someone said it wasn't worth it for 2 days - maybe we just need to explain it better.
The system we have doesn't allow for regular change of access code - which is what you need when you're charging by the hour - and we did think what we were offering was great value - but maybe we need to revisit that decision. Certainly charging £2.50 per day would make us more money - but that wasn't what we were trying to do.
Bear with us on this one!
John

We stayed at this campsite on the Friday and Saturday night.
When chose the site as it looked nice and they seem to have some good and enforced rules re: noise and disruption caused by other campers.
They market the campsite at couples without children, and the site is mostly adult only. If you want to bring kids you have a restricted amount of pitches to choose from but they are still very child friendly (more for the younger kids though). Our little boy loved the rabbits, guinea pigs and other animals on the site.
When we arrived we were pointed toward our pitch, unfortunately a family with two tents had occupied three pitches (including ours) so we pitched in an adjacent grassed area.
The showers / facilities are superb lots of hot water, lots of room in the cubicles, and they have nice music playing to give that extra bit of privacy.
Unfortunately the family which had taken our pitch proved to be a bit rowdy with swearing and loud talking well into the early hours. When we complained to the management the next morning they were extremely sympathetic and asked If I wanted them removed from the park!. As no-one else had complained I asked if we could re-locate away from them instead and again this was not an issue.
I think this level of service is first class and very re-assuring that customer service is taken seriously here.
Our new pitch proved to be better than the one we had booked and our second night was nice and peaceful.
Very keen to return for the nice facilities and great customer service.
Probably best for adults only or family's with children who are happy to play on the football field and don't need a play park to keep them occupied.
One warning the site is adjacent to the 'beach'. Its fine for walking dogs etc but not somewhere for kids to play as its more of a tidal flat than sand.

Had a couple of nights here and agree with most of the comments already posted in that it really is pretty isolated and windy.
A very quiet site and not much (if anything) for the kids to do and all the literature makes it clear that they aren't particularly welcome - the rules stated - any children found on the site by themselves will be escorted back to their party, and the party asked to leave the site.
On a slightly more positive note, the toilet blocks are excellent, 4 wet room style large cubicles in both male and female facilities. However showers have to be paid separately at 40p for 2 mins or £1 for 6. This doesn't seem to be advertised anywhere before hand. I wouldn't have minded too much but the shower wasn't hot enough for me and had no temperature control - (Wife and kids said theirs were fine).
Staff were all friendly enough and the shop was well stocked.
Wifi Internet access was available on site but I could only pay for a year - not much good for a 2 night stay.
We ate at the Powfoot golf hotel, which was pretty good value for money and decent food

Having previously left a review of this site from a camper van holiday perspective, hopefully I will be able to submit a second review of a letting caravan holiday in the same park.
Its just amazing to see how far holidays in static caravans have come in recent years.
On this particular site they have top of the range units with all the comforts of home at your fingertips. No more bawling at the OH, you forgot to pack the. As its already supplied right down to your bath robes, towels, slippers, shower gel, shampoo, shower cap and just about anything else you can think of.
The particular unit we were in had a spectacular front position with wonderful sea views, patio doors and a huge side decking with table and chairs.
As always we were made welcome on arrival to the point we almost feel like family now.
The luxurious private Spa was as always well used by us. Its just the icing on the cake!
Its nice to visit a site where the owners welcome your opinions. Throughout the park you will see signs saying if somethings not right please let us know so we can fix it.
Now that's not something you see everyday!

Many many thanks for the great comments - yes, we do try really, really hard - and it's lovely to hear something positive for once! Our Pam was especially pleased with the comments about cleanliness and our Pauline was over the moon with the bits about a friendly welcome. She was so chuffed in fact that she had to disappear round the back for a cigarette. Twice.
We do get it wrong sometimes though - so do keep us in the loop!
Thanks again,
John

We found this site on this website when looking for a stop over going to the Highlands and a good find it turned out to be.
Pros
A warm and friendly welcome at reception. Lovely location with the sea in front and open fields behind Level pitches Excellent facilities, clean showers, dryer & washer, campers kitchen, shop Peaceful and relaxing site, little noise and very well maintained Delightful selection of animals. An emu escaped when we were there, it ran straight past us in the night as we walked to the toilets. It was recaptured on the 15th green of the local golf course the next morning!
Cons
Probably not the best site if you have kids as there is little for them to do. May be a little too quiet (lots of seasonal & static pitches) for those who prefer a busy social site. Additional comments We paid 16 pounds for the electric hook-up pitch (two adults) and 40p each for an excellent 2 min shower, which is very good value consider so many sites seem to have put up prices this year. The local hotel is within walking distance (just take a torch if heading back after dark) and is pleasant with a good menu. The small eaters 3 course is a bargain.
This site makes for an excellent stop over or a base for exploring Dumfries and Galloway. We will be using it again without doubt. Final point, on first arrival you need to be there before 8pm as the barrier closes automatically.
