We arrived fairly late and quickly found the toilet block, the noticeboard of which told us that we could pay at the coffee shop connected to the show caves or a warden would come and see us in the morning. Within a few minutes of starting to set the tent up the owner came and took the fee for the night and as we hadn't made our minds up whether we should stay one or two nights we could just pop up to the coffee shop or see him to pay then.

We ended up staying the two nights which meant a walk up to the show caves which was fairly busy but still in no way interfered with the campsite which remained a quiet and relaxing place to stay. So you shouldn't worry about visitors to the show caves disturbing you. There's also a dinosaur park associated with the show caves, which is probably great if you're taking kids.

We paid £10 a night for our tent with 2 adults. We were able to park the car quite close to the tent, but off the grass. The campsite is on a hill so the pitches of the tent areas can be a little sloped but not too bad. Some reviewers say the ground is stony, but I had no problem getting tent pegs in.

The site has hard surfaces to drive round and park on, so no chance of getting bogged in especially for the caravan pitches which all have a waste water pipe, a tap and an electric hookup it seems. Some of the tents seemed to have electric hookups too. The road type bits wind around in a clever, but not awkward, way that breaks up the campsite into smaller sections, and there is a nice variety in the tent areas too, you can camp under trees and near the river or just in the open on the grass. There's some trees around as well so the campsite doesn't just look like a big field with tracks through it.

The shower and toilet block is central and immaculately clean, it seems contract cleaners come in daily and do a good job, this does however mean they close the toilets, but they let you use the disabled toilet in the meantime. There is a drying room, but this was full on the rainy weekend we went despite the campsite not being particularly busy, so try not to rely on it. There is a washing up area as well with two sinks as well.

The Gwyn Arms was just down the road, but it was not serving food and had only one type of beer, served from a barrel atop the bar, the bar girl said the pub was closing. Further down the road there was another closed pub, in the opposite direction (turn right out of the campsite) there is a pub called the ancient Britain, I didn't go there but it looked open and ok from the outside.

On our final day the owner said we could leave the car parked and the tent erected until we had finished climbing the mountain we wanted to climb (Fan Brycheiniog) as the campsite wasn't too busy, I thought that was very nice as some places want you off the place by mid-day if you're not stopping that night. There are more mountains I want to climb in the area and I'll more than likely stay at the site again but I'll be sure to take food to cook myself in the evening instead of trying to go to local pubs.

Beautiful site, set in fabulous surroundings with great amenities & yes you’ll need mossie candles in the evening & rock pegs for the hard standing pitches .

Strange set up, no on site office for camping all seems to be run from the Cave’s admin, but wardens seem very helpful & patrol regularly. See toilet notice board for Instructions on arrival .

My only criticism & don’t be put off by this is, pot washing facilities are a bit cramped.

Will most definitely return. Perfect for dog lovers & walkers.

Having just come back from a night's camping there, I must say that we will be going back! It cost £10 for 2 adults and a tent - our dog was free. The area is, as mentioned earlier, immaculately kept. The toilets are very clean and modern looking and there are loads of areas for tents dotted around as well as many areas for caravans or motorhomes. These areas all have EHU, waste and fresh water supplies. I liked the layout of the campsite because it seemed you could pitch your tent in a secluded area under some trees or on a meadow like field, the choice is yours, very layed back. The warden drives around checking the site and if you arrive at the site too late to pay for the pitch at the coffee shop, then you can pay him there and then. You do not need to book unless it's a bank or school holiday. We just turned up, no probs.

There's plenty to do without getting in the car. There's a route directly from the campsite, up the hill which commands some spectacular views. There's the showcaves and dinosaur park and also a big field that you can walk through containing animals like Llama's, emu, geese, etc. If you fancy a pint, then the nearest pub is only a short walk away!

We camped in the rain unfortunately but that meant there were virtually NO midges - hurrah! Make sure you bring something like rock pegs because our pitch was incredible stony, standard pegs won't do it.

Can't wait to go back!

Excellent site with lovely views of Cribarth hill. I stayed 3 nights as it was so good. Don't be put off that the site is at a tourist attraction as the campsite is completely separate. As you drive in, the cave complex is to the left and the campsite to the right.
There are lots of little grassy areas for tents and gravelly areas for caravans and motorhomes. The quiet tenting zones are either out in the open or in wooded areas centred around the toilet block. Facilities are immaculate; they are heated and kept very clean. There is a separate washing up area/drying room. The warden checks regularly and is friendly and helpful.
The coffee shop at the cave complex is available for use and serves good breakfasts. Ice blocks can be left here although the shop does close at 5:30 (I think). There are several pub restaurants closeby, one only 10 mins walk away. Not sure of costs but food looked good.
The Pen-y-cae Inn a few miles away was expensive, but excellent food for that special occasion. The Ancient Briton pub a bit further on served more traditional pub grub at more affordable prices and there are 2 good pubs in Abercraf.

We've just spent a short weekend here and I can safely say we'll be going back. Despite it being the height of the season we had our pick of pitches and there was only one other van in the area we chose. The toilet/shower blocks were spotlessly clean and even though there are only 3 showers I didn't have to queue.
If you don't want to go up to the shop to pay, a friendly chap comes around to collect payment and enquire if everything is ok. Price is very reasonable (£12 per night) especially as we had our own water and waste drain on the pitch (on other sites this would command a premium).
As has been said by other reviewers, there are a lot of midges around in the evening but I've already bought some citronella candles for when we go back.

Just returned from Dan Yr Ogof during the May BH weekend. Lovely site. Facilities very good, reasonably clean toilets, 3 cubicles, 3 showers. Washing up room with 2 sinks. Waste disposal room. Good pitches with Electric hookups. Near enough level.

Their are quiet tenting zones, and the warden drives round regularly to keep an eye on things. The last night there were a bunch of rowdy folk, but not over the top. The only negative thing is the midges, make sure you are armed with your repellent!

Nice walk up the hill right next to the campsite. The caves and dinosaur park is great for all ages.

Overall a recommended site.

 Great campsite, very clean.
We have three tents and it only cost us £18 pound per night with ehu.
Wardens are very friendly and helpful, views are some of the best we have ever encountered on a campsite
Toilet blocks spotless although three showers in ladies and gents, could cause problems in high season. Well worth a visit.

One of the most immaculately clean sites I have stayed on ,you could eat your dinner off the toilet floors! Good flat pitches, plenty of hook ups and quiet areas and small enclaves for groups, all set in woodland in the beautiful mountains.
Plenty to do on adjacent Show cave site, with dinosaur park for kids, small museum, ski slopes and shire horse centre with play areas and petting zoo.
Numerous mountain walks and pot holing available. Restaurant on show cave site did good breakfasts.
We had a great few days and will certainly be back.

We turned up here on the spur of the moment and are glad we did. What a great site. Site was generally clean and tidy as was the shower block. There are adult only areas for those amongst us that have had there days of screaming kids (Don't tell my kids I said that). The staff were very helpful and the facilities good. What more can I say? Oh!, the caves are well worth a visit.

This was our 1st outing for camping and I must say it has encouraged us to do more. There wasn't anything on site except for the shower block which was immaculate and finished to a high standard, but there were plenty on places within easy travelling distance.

The site is well kept and littler cleaned every morning, Hard ground pegs are a must when setting up in certain areas but the meadow was not a problem. The site is right next to Dan Yr Ogof show caves which are well worth a visit, there is also a cafe / restaurant.

The only minus point was the insect life, lets just say in the night it is plentiful, so take the repellent. Excellent all round would visit again.
