This was our first visit to this site and it won't be our last. We were made very welcome from all the staff.
The site is in a superb location alongside the canal and is easily located/accessed.
On the negative aspect the toilets and shower block leave much to be desired although there is ample hot water available the two toilets and one shower available for each sex are very very dated but we understand that planning permission for an improved amenities block is being pursued.
The children's play facilities are good and the pub itself offers a selection of cask ales and real food at sensible prices.

We have just arrived home after spending four nights camping here. We have had a wonderful time, helped by sunny weather. The location is second to none with lovely views of the canal and Beeston castle.
The campsite was very good. Yes the toilet block is rather old and tired but it proved to be adequate for the site even when it was very full over this weekend. They even supply lots of good quality toilet paper. There is plenty of hot water for the hand basins and also for the two outside washing-up sinks, which we used regularly throughout our stay.
We had two meals in the pub, which we really enjoyed. Agreed it is not fine dining but good pub grub. We did find that there were too many chips with our first meals so we asked to share one portion for our second and that proved just right for us.
They got a bit low on real ale on our second night but by the third they had three very nice ales on draft and, very importantly it was a the right temperature. A lot of pubs chill real ale which, to my taste, just ruins the flavour.
The staff, especially Netty who is a human dynamo, were really friendly, making us feel very much at home and welcome. We loved the free range chickens and had some of their eggs in an omelet for our tea one night.
If you find the lack of card payment facilities a nuisance or have other queries about the Shady Oak just talk to Netty. She will explain the pubs recent history, before she and Chris took over. You will then perhaps be a bit more understanding of their situation.
Thanks for a wonderful few days.

A very last minute idea to go camping for the weekend so did not want to travel too far,
We had noticed the campsite some months earlier so decided to give it a go,
On arrival it looks a bit untidy but it is in the early days of development as a camp site,
Ground was fairly flat there is a newly formed gravel road onto the field with about 10 or so hard standings for caravans/motorhomes there were lots of electrical hook up point which is unusual for a small site,
We pitched our tent and had a good look around, toilet block with shower not brilliant but did the job and very clean with lots of loo roll available,
Large double sink to wash your dishes with hot water and somewhere to empty your porta loo,
The site sits on the edge of a canal with boats up and down all day long very pleasant,
Then the pub which the site belongs to more like going into somebody's house ! dogs were welcome inside as well as children a very friendly place, night time and entertainment was put on in the pub Friday night 70s/80s disco great fun proper toe tapping stuff, then Saturday night a guitar playing singer who would of done well on x factor and he got everybody involved great night again,
The owners took the time to walk around the site chatting and nothing was to much trouble,
Would recommend this site if you want a no frills good time/rest not much for kids but ideal for couples who want some quiet with stunning views
And you definitely cant complain at the price £30.00 all weekend inc electric

This could be such a lovely site, but it is very tired and has such awful loo/shower facilities.
I booked on the basis of the reviews from last year, when the cost was £13 for a van with ehu, thinking that at that price, I did not expect the facilities to be that good. However, by the time we got there, we found that the price had risen this year to £17 per night, with no real improvement to the facilities. The owners state that the loo block has been re-painted – I would hate to have seen it before. The shower is a mess, and is operated by tokens obtainable from the pub. These tokens cost 50p and give you precisely 3 minutes of water! Take into account that it took 20-25 seconds for the water to get hot, it makes it an expensive shower.
There are two washing-up sinks outside, but only enough hot water to use one, and when the plug is removed, the dirty water floods back into the other sink.
There is a half-built (a few years ago!) chemical waste disposal point which, after a busy weekend, was overflowing rather nastily. There is no drain to empty grey water, so the bushes got well-watered!
On the positive side, an excellent location right on the Shroppie with fabulous views towards Beeston and Peckforton castles. The pub was good, but the food very ordinary but not expensive. And, as has been mentioned before, there was a ready supply of loo rolls!
All in all, very disappointing and expensive considering the state of the facilities. I will not be returning unless the price is reduced or the facilities vastly improved.

I have to admit I wasn’t too impressed with the site when we first arrived. It is a basic site with some hard standings (that are a little on the worn side) but it is in a lovely quiet location behind the pub. The site has the essentials – EHU, water, ELSAN, toilets and showers. We didn’t use the toilets/showers which are basic but clean.
TV reception using free view was fine, radio and mobile (02) reception also good too.
However, the pub itself is lovely, in a superb location right next to the Shropshire Union canal. When we checked in we were made very welcome by the landlady. The main lounge is lovely with a huge fireplace and lots of Shire horse memorabilia and brasses. Outside there is a lovely beer garden adjacent to the canal and a small children’s play area. There are ‘resident’ chickens and a Peacock who wander around the grounds after food.
Food is served all day until 8. 30 Monday to Saturday and I think 1 to 6 on a Sunday. We ate both evenings in the pub and the food is traditional, home cooked food (lovely homemade chips!) with a variety of dishes from steaks to omelettes. There was also live music both evenings.
The site is a great location to visit Beeston Castle (English Heritage) and Peckforton Castle (hotel but worth a look around), the lovely villages of Bunbury (including Bunbury Locks) and Tarporley. I would also recommend a walk or cycle down the canal both ways.
As mentioned on the site write up, take the Huxley Lane route from the A41 otherwise you will get stuck over the humpback bridge next to the pub! It’s also worth noting that the pub is a cash only venue, but there are several cash points in Tarporley together with a couple of supermarkets.
All in all, although a little on the basic side I would not hesitate to return here again.

We stumbled across this site last minute, as a place to meet up with family. It made us laugh. We would definitely stay here again, because it's a great location for visiting the area, and it's nice to have a pub to meet local friends. It has loads of potential - there was a lot of canal traffic going by.
It's very laid back - facilities for campers, despite being in portacabin, were fine. The shower was fine once it got going (get your tokens 50p from the pub the night before - I needed 2 to get a quick warm shower!), and the toilets were very clean. It's a shed in a field, so of course, its not spotless, but you can get clean. And the taps had hot running water.
The playground, which is in its own little fenced off area is fine for children, but the canal itself is interesting enough. With ducks, and loads of birds, chickens wandering around. Kids enjoyed feeding them in the morning with crumbs. I enjoyed watching the birdlife - tons going on first thing in the morning!
Decent beers in the pub, and the food was fine - it was a sunday afternoon, quite busy, and I don't think keeping the place keen and tidy is a priority. Tables weren't tidied for ages, glasses stacked up on the sink (not because there was a queue really, just because it's a chilled place!)
It's like someone's front room - I didn't see anyone rushing around getting stressed - it was just very laid back. Only one concern was when a young lad (I assumed to be the owner's son, maybe 6-7 years old?) was asked to clean the place mats - which were smothered in beans and food - he calmly used a drying up cloth and distributed the food over the place mats, having sprayed them first with cleaner. So probably not the cleanest of places to eat in. The toilet facilities in the pub were fine, though drying hands was left to a grubby little towel that looked like it had been hung there for a month.
I think we paid £17 with hook up.
Happy to come back again - it's one of a kind.

We had a weekend here recently, the location is beautiful. The shady oak pub is set alongside a canal, you can sit in the beer garden and watch the boats go by.
There are lovely walks along the canal and you can walk to beeston castle, but please note you have to pay to get into the castle.
We had our tea at the pub one evening which was very acceptable, real homemade chips and my sons chicken nuggets were homemade too. They do say it's all homemade food at the bar. The staff were always friendly and courteous.
There is a playground by the beer garden which is great, but you can't see it from the site so if you have young children you have to go with them every time they want to go and play. I wasn't comfortable leaving my child in a play area by a car park and not being able to see where he is.
The site might benefit from a couple of swings in the centre and maybe the boat they had by the park area for the kids to play on and parents can relax knowing they can see where their children are.
I think the site could benefit from a little tidying up, I understand the site owners are in the process of doing so. But mowing the grass is easy enough.
The shower block has 2 toilets and 1 shower, the showers need tokens which the staff forgot to mention on arrival. So my brother had to knock on the pub door and disturb them as the pub doesn't open until 12, most people like a morning shower.
The floor in the ladies shower did not look safe to me, as it is wood and had become very spongy. I am not a heavy person but I was very wary about going through the floor! As you can imagine, a wooden floor is not the most sensible option for a shower room.
Despite this, I would love to go back. It has a lot of potential and really only a couple of things to sort out to make this a wonderful little site.

Brilliant site, great little pub on the edge of the canal way - which provides lovely walks, Lovely home made food and the campsite itself is great, small field with toilet block, hook ups a plenty (it seems) and even a small playground for children. W'eve been here with the kids and also without and thoroughly enjoyed it both times. Will definitely be re visiting!
The price is brilliant, they charge per unit and not per person which really helps when there is a few of you.

We have just had a great night here. We had a caravan (£13 inc hook-up) and a tent (£10). Such a friendly welcome and everyone staying there looked so happy and relaxed. The pub was also popular and is a credit to the hard working and welcoming staff. We had a bbq and a lovely walk along the canal talking to some boaters at the lock, followed by a few pints canal side at the pub. The kids had a great time and the play area has recently been refurbished.
The shower, toilet and chemical waste facilities may not be the best we have used, but they are adequate and have improved since we visited last year, and I believe are due to be updated again for next year. Don't let that put you off as it is in a great location for a fun and relaxing weekend.
We will be booking again soon.

We have just returned from this site after a superb weekend (4 adults + 1 Child in two tourers). Phoned to make the booking which was very easy considering it was the last weekend before the children go back to school and the weather forecast being so good.
We were not dissappointed, the site was quite busy with tents tourers and motorhomes, but still not cramped, there was plentiful space around each pitch and everyone was so pleasant. The children all playing together, what a lovely sound, the sound of children's laughter. We didn't eat at the pub but the menu was home cooked foods and very reasonably priced. We did however sample the cask ales and sit in the beer garden right next to the canal, the play area comes in useful when the children are not making their own entertainment, what a fab location.
The site is basic as has been said in previous reviews, the toilets and showers (yes they need updating) but always clean and well stocked with loo roll.
After talking to the owner they have lots more plans for over the winter. The bays for tourers and motorhomes more defined and levelled as much as is possible. 6 more electric hook ups (18 at present)but all of them being replaced. General tidying of planted areas. Shelter for pot wash area. Hand dryers and also some upgrade for toilet and shower cabin.
Oh yes don't forget the chickens, wonderful, and the 3 soon to be out roaming peacocks, cant wait to see them on our next visit. Yes we will be going back and soon.
