My party consisted of 3 adults and a 16 yr old, 7 yr old and 1 yr old.
Excellent site with friendly and helpful owners. All the staff were helpful and welcoming. Food was great and really good value. So much so, it was cheap enough to eat there rather than cook for family in motorhome. I did really enjoy the food and the kids chicken nuggets are real chicken and coated by the chef. I hate fast food stuff but the 'one' my little one would share was real tasty. Our adults meals were proper home cooked pie which had the best sauce and loads of meat!
Site is very basic which is what we like. I'm not into large sites with loads of 'round the clock' entertainment so this site was lovely for us. They did have a singer and a fancy dress disco on the sat and sun which was good fun.
The large camping field is located next to the pub but with the large car park in-between so quite safe for little ones. The site and pub is located alongside the canal and its so relaxing watching all the canal boats passing or pulling over to moor.
They have a children's play area and lots of picnic benches overlooking the canal.
As I was in a motorhome, I didn't use the facilities but the owners Annette and Chris have only just took it over, and they are revamping the facilities.
We had a lovely long walk around Beaston castle and I was told there was a lot to see but to be honest I enjoyed the long weekend doing nothing!
Even the rain in the mornings was ok to put up with as just bought some wellies for the kids and had fun watching them splash and feed the ducks that came onto the site.
We had an excellent time and will definitely be going back.

Basic site but the new owners are trying to improve facilities, and it is only £10 a night (plus £3 if you want hook-up). They have only been here since January 2012.
There are now 2 washing up sinks, not covered at the moment, but the owners are planning to erect a cover.
Toilets and showers are in a Portakabin and were clean (and the site was busy as it was a Bank Holiday weekend) but the toilet roll did run out a couple of times.
Didn't use showers - they're 50p a time and you have to get a token from the pub. The pub has a Facebook page if you want more information - I did suggest to the owner, Annette, that she get more details on UK Campsite.
The pub is nice - reasonably priced pub grub (burge and chips for £3. 50!, other means £5. 95 - £7. 95, desserts £2. 50). There was entertainment in the pub on both Saturday (singer) and Sunday (disco) when we were there - not sure if its every weekend.
There is a small play area at the pub. Site was quiet at night - the board at entrance says no noise after 11pm.
The site was predominantly used by caravans, we were one of 4 tents pitched. There is fishing on the canal and lots of walks to do from the site - the Sandstone trail is very close.
Nearby attractions include Beeston Castle, Burwardsley Candle Factory and Cheshire Farms Ice Cream farm. There is also the Crocky Trail adventure place for kids (probably over 10 years old) and Chester is not far. There are also other pubs in the area, but probably not in easy walking distance.
Although our first impressions were not great (it was a lot busier than we usually like, and everyone seemed cramped together), we had a good weekend. We pitched the tent at the canal end of the site, which was quieter and away from where the kids were playing football.

We have just had the best long weekend ever at the Shady Oak camp site.
The weather was fab, we walked for miles and finished each day with a drink sat by the canal watching the barges going by.
We walked to Beeston castle with our dog across the fields, and walked part of the sandstone trail, not bad for two people that do not often walk that far
If we were asked for a down side it would be the toilet block but having said that it was clean and that's all we need as we have the Motorhome.
We will definitely be going back again. We came back totally chilled out.

This site is in a wonderful location. The Shady Oak Pub is excellent in every way but unfortunately the site had problems.
Firstly there appeared to be no rules regarding noise with people partying until 2.30 am, dogs loose on the site and children playing football.
The toilet block (portable cabin) was unhygienic and was rarely serviced. The field is very uneven and there is no washing up area.
This site could be marvellous with some tlc and rules

Management response: My name is Netty, myself and my hubby Chris took over the Shady Oak in Jan 2012, after it had been closed for a couple of months. We have made some changes by turning it back into a traditional country pub. We are working on the toilet block at present and we are building an outside wash area for pots. We have replaced a shower and a toilet in the ladies, and will be soon replacing the floors |

Perfect setting in the Cheshire countryside, just one mile from Beeston Castle and plenty to do around.
We were on a grass pitch, and due to the rain pitched further down the field so as not to ruin the grass.
Pub is nice, food ok if no a little pricey.
Facilities - if you can call them that are 1 toilet, a shower and two sinks (gents). These were not serviced for the four days we were there, not even a top up on the toilet roll! The shower was dirty, water only warm and there are no hand drying facilities, mirrors or shaver points. Not to mention no heating either!
When we arrived, we were told that they do not accept tents at this time of year due to the ground conditions. Imagine our surprise when we returned from a day out on Saturday to find 20+ Duke of Edinburgh tents erected just behind our pitch with around 40 boystrous teenagers.
All that said - would I return? - No, been there, seen it and got the teeshirt. Would I recommend it - If you want a basic site and have your own facilities then give it a go.

Scruffy site in picturesque position.
This site unfortunately could do with more policing and maintenance by owners, although the toilet block is relatively clean it needs work, overflowing shower in the ladies block remained like that all weekend. No sink plugs, no mirror, no razor point in gents. Tokens are needed for the shower and I understand they will cost you 50p a shot, we decided to have strip washes in our unit. The weekend we were there was very busy (full, it appeared) with a large group of young people camping, this is good to see and I am not there to knock that but music and banter still at 3.30 am and onwards pushes your patience (a few common decency rules need to be made clear by owners, rather than just taking money).
This site only needs some care and attention to compliment its lovely position.

Have just spent one night at this site, on arriving had to wait until midday until the pub opened to be allocated a pitch. Wasn't a problem as we could look around before hand and find an area suitable. The site at the top end is flat and sheltered with great views over to Beeston and Peckforton castles.
The facilities are very basic 2 toilets and 1 shower in each, however they were clean.
Great walks along the canal and then the sandstone trail to beeston probably take 30 mins to get to the castle along this route.
Small play area on the pub which my little one used a lot.
This is an enjoyable site for the price £10 for me an 5 year old. Also only 5 mins in car to the ice cream farm. Would certainly recommend for a quick night away.

This site is nicely located just off the A49 and pretty easy to find. Upon turning into the carpark we were greeted with fabulous scenery and a lovely looking pub set on the canal side
We popped in to the pub to check in and were greeted by a friendly chap with a smile who took our £14 per pitch for 1 adult, 1 child and EHU. Showers were an extra 50p per time. We were allocated a pitch but advised we could choose anyone if we did not fancy the one they have offered.
We drove in and found two pitches along the side hedge, that were on grass, spacious and reasonably flat. Some pitches may not be as ideal for tents, as the ground was quite lumpy, but in a caravan or motorhome they are fine.
We pitched up, took a 50p shower, which to be honest were not too bad, but you only get 3 minutes, plenty for me, but a lady with long hair may struggle to be done in that time. The box for the tokens is in the shower cubicle, so you can just put another in. The shower was spacious, warm and powerful enough and more than adequate for the job
Toilets were two cubicles with toilet roll, were clean and again did the job just fine. No mirror in the gents, and no soap or hand towels, but there were not major issues. Fresh water, chemical disposal point and rubbish points are all opposite the toilet / shower block.
We went for a meal in the pub in the evening and being a Sunday managed to get a roast, the grub was delicious, however we were overcharged by £7, so check you bill when paying. Good range of beers and wines and all reasonably priced too.
The site is peaceful at night and during the day, with only a few cars every now and then going past. At night we heard almost nothing which was very calming.
The pub is set alongside the canal and a rather quiet road, so not too bad with the road noise and very occasional train noise, that to be honest, unless I saw the trains, I did not notice them at all. It is lovely to sit in the pub and watch the canal boats go by.
With the site being next to the canal walking is in abundance and of course nice and flat and we walked for miles along the path, which was great watching the canal boats in the locks and them chugging along nice and mellow.
We did not venture out so not sure where the nearest shop was and what attractions there are I do not know, except that Chester is 10 or so miles up the road with all the benefits of Chester including the zoo, boat basin and Roman remains.

We were most disappointed to arrive at this site to find that the staff had no idea that we had booked to pitch several units together. Especially as we had been told twice on the phone previously that this wouldn't be a problem.
We were greeted by a very friendly member of bar staff who did his best to help but had no idea how the booking system or the deposits worked. He was extremely helpful in finding a pitch for us that would enable us to be close to the rest of our party when they arrived. Our disappointment that we experienced the following day when we went out for an hour to return and find that people had pitched extremely close to us at either side leaving no room for our friends, was another story.
The toilet block was a converted portacabin with a wooden floor, there was no evidence of them being cleaned for our 3 day stay. The toilets leaked and the shower overflowed when it was used. There was no soap in the hand washing facilities and no means of drying your hands, the hot water taps were dangerously hot as soon as you turned them on and there were no plugs therefore the only means of washing was by cold water. Having camped up and down the country we are realistic in that facilities vary and I do feel that some people are overly fussy, however the basics aren't much to expect. There was also no lighting in the ladies facility - something which we did report in the bar. Needless to say the barman wasn't interested.
On a better note the site is very well situated in a beautiful part of the country and the pub staff were friendly (as long as you didn't want to bother them with camping issues) and the food good and cheap.

Stayed the one night as eldest son was doing a hike in the area. As mentioned in other reviews the pitches are on a slight slope and ground uneven although we managed to pitch our tent on a flattish piece of ground.
The views from the tent of Beeston and Peckforton Castles was great. Chose this camp site as it has a pub. It is situated on the canal side with good out door seating.
Small playgound for children under 10. We ate in the pub at night which was good and inexpensive. Facilities are basic and no soap or towels to wash and dry hands. Didn't use the showers. Lovely walks along the canal.
Plenty to do and see. We took the bikes and lots of bike trails around. Delamere forest not too far away. For the money £8 a night we enjoyed ourselves.
