The campsite is in a great location, perfect for walking around the village. The tent pitches are reasonably sized width ways though only just wide enough for a car to drive up the middle of field to get to each of the pitches. Could be a bit tight getting cars in and out.
Yes there were geese but it didn't really bother us. The biggest issue for me was the very basic facilities. To have toilets without hand washing facilities really puts me off. There is an unplumbed in shower base and what appears to be space for a basin but that is as far as the work has got still. Similar to other reviewers I was disappointed that in the toilet where there was a basin, no soap or hand drying facilities were provided. We found the toilet and shower near reception but felt rather awkward trying to brush my teeth at the basin which was in the reception lobby.
Given the cost of the site I would expect the facilities to be a bit better.

Well after choosing this site because of previous reviews I must say we were very disappointed. First of all to be charged £33 a night for 4 of us I would think warrants at least usable facilities this was not the case there was one unisex shower with a toilet then another cabin with 2 toilets in but no wash sink, the shower toilet did not in the 5 nights we stayed get cleaned or restocked there was no soap or towels the whole time this lack of facilities meant that even though the site wasn't full there was still a queue of 5 people in the mornings. There is 1 dish washing sink which is outside.
There is a reception at the side of the house but it isn't manned and there is no information at all about the site or the local area which we found unusual.
The field for the tents is back to back with a goose and chicken pen which means if you like a bit of peace and quiet is very unlikely as the geese and chickens seem to rise at about 6 a. M and don't settle until late evening.
The location of the site is excellent being right in the village giving access to lots of different parts of Yorkshire through local transport, we found the local nisa very good but went into Pickering to a large coop to stock up on BBQ meats

We booked this site due to its location to the Dalby Forest as we were there for the concerts at the weekend
The site owner is very friendly and the tent pitches are very flat and of a very generous size.
There are 2 separate toilet/shower rooms, together with another block which has 2 toilets and a shower which is still under construction (reading previous reviews this has been 'nearly finished' for quite some time.
Electric hook ups were available
It's location to the village of Thornton Dale is excellent only a 2 minute walk away, where there are 3 pubs and a very nice fish and chip shop
With regard to the Dalby Forest yes it is only 2 miles to the main gate, however it is a further 4. 5 miles to the concert venue. It is certainly not walkable unless you are an ardent walker and want to walk home on an unlit road with no pavements. Taxis were are all booked up, and the only way I'd recommend travelling to the concert venue is by car (and be prepared for mayhem and a long wait to exit the car park after)
All in all though this is a lovely little site and we will definitely be returning.
One slight drawback is there is no facility to pay by card. So make sure you arrive with cash

Highly recommended. Great location, very short walk into Thornton-le-Dale village with shops & 3 excellent pubs. Lots to do with a choice of short and long walks. The site is very friendly, good size pitches with great views. The area is very relaxed and all the family had a fantastic time. It's not so big to be crowded either. Extra toilet facilities were just being finished on our visit but didn't cause any issues. Although the weather was good, the fact we could put up our gazebo was good (just in case). Being able to use our bbq as a fire later on kept the great atmosphere going into the evening. Certain to go back.

We have just returned from another visit to Prospect Farm.
We stayed Monday - Thursday and surprisingly had the tent field all to ourselves. We were also blessed with lovely weather which made our stay even more pleasurable.
The facilities are the same as our previous visit and review, but the second shower & toilet room is almost finished, which will be a definite bonus in busier times.
Paul and his family were friendly and welcoming as usual.
We're already looking forward to future visits.

Ok so I will get the horrible things out of the way first. The cockerel - for anyone who wants a little bit of a lie in, you won't. The cockerel cockadoodledoos about 4 and 6 am every morning! We did get back off the sleep though, you had to get used to the geese also making a right racket when they were having their battles.
When we first got to the camping site, there was no one to great us, so we had to pitch up not knowing if we were on the rite plot or not. Someone did come about 1 hour later who was lovely and helpful (the owners were away that night)
Also the toilet/shower facilities = 2 showers and 3 toilets. We only got told of the 2 toilets/1 shower so when we did find out about the other hidden toilet and shower we kept this quiet because they do not facilitate for how many campers/caravans there were. We managed though.
The owners were very friendly and helpful and the walk around the beautiful village of Thornton le Dale amazed us. It was beautiful, popped into a pub for lunch, where you can take your dog in so that was a perk for us.
I would definitely go back here because of the scenery but will take ear plugs for the alarm clock ready to go off in the early hours! oh, and look out for the small lizards, we got a lovely visitor on the last night - cute!

I can only reflect on the old saying - 'If its too good to be true, it probably is!' Given what I thought was good fortune getting booked here at relatively short notice given the time of year.
If you notice, the vast majority of reviews for this site are from campers with tents - and for good reason. As while its great for tents, its not so great for anything with wheels. The site is billed as having five hard-standing pitches - I'd question this.
On our visit, there were two motorhomes basically up the drive - more 'parked' than pitched. As where they were, certainly didn't resemble any pitch I'd seen before. There were also a couple of caravans on a wood-chip base further in - where the fifth spot was I just don't know. Although there was a third caravan up on the grass in the 'tent area' The close proximity of these units, none being more than a few feet from the adjacent one, the reality is, that there is just not room - especially at busy periods, for the likes of motorhomes/caravans given the limited space on the low end which is designated for these units. Yes, it was a busy period, but for me it was a shambles.
On our arrival around half six in the evening, there was no-one around to point us to a pitch. In fact there didn't seem to actually be a spare pitch to point us to. There were also other campers wandering about in doubt as to what to do or where to pitch. When the owner did show up around 8pm, he explained he'd been to the local pub for his tea. Of course - and why not! He showed us to a grass pitch among a load of tents. (this area supposedly for caravans only, if the signage was to be believed). The pitch had to be vacated by a nearby caravanners car, parked there due to the lack of space on his own nearby pitch. Which is why I couldn't initially see where we could possibly pitch if or when the bloke did actually show up. Hence, we were late pitching - which somewhat wrecked our evening. But, this was reflected in what we paid on leaving.
Added to this, at the time of leaving, I suggested to a group of kids - using the enclosure around the CWD point as a play apparatus, that they should move away and play elsewhere given it was unhygienic to play there. I was told by one kid that 'he lived here', and they always played there. Hence I'm slopping the cassette out with kids dangling off the fence above me. But by this time id had my fill of the place, and wouldn't have been too distraught if one of the little scrotes had fell off and ended up down the manhole! This 'play area' being just a few feet from the aforementioned motorhomes 'parked/pitched' up the drive, by the way. Lovely!
I know a lot of people have raved about this site, and maybe a quieter time of year would have been different for us? But, the sheer lack of space for wheeled units at not just busy times, given the hard-standings were tenuous at best - but in general. Unless they were pitched up on the grass, makes this site less than ideal unless you are in a tent.
The location is very good. The facilities arent the best I wouldn't say, for tents, ironically. Given there's only really a couple of loo/showers, given the number of campers there. But, there's another loo block almost built/complete.
I believe there's stuff for kids around the farm with the animals - but cant comment on this.

We really love this site and managed 3 trips here last year. So quiet and peaceful, and a perfect location in the middle of Thornton le Dale - once you have arrived, you can about forget using the car should you want to.
The facilities are good, and supplemented by a shower & loo in the owner's house at peak times.
Fresh eggs are available and make a great breakfast.
The animals in the field behind the tents provide lots of entertainment for the children.
The owner is really helpful and dug out a baby bath for us to use.
From the site there are some lovely walks and bike rides. Dalby Forest is a short car or bike ride away.
Plenty of pubs, shops and cafe's in the village. We had superb fish and chips from Pickering (didn't rate the ones from the village quite so much). The pub does carry-out hand pulled ales and cartons, for drinking back at the tent.
There are a couple of farm shops on the road to Pickering - useful for stocking up on goodies for the BBQ.
Looking forward to many more trips in 2012.

My partner and I visited this fabulous site for 5 days at the end of March 2012 and the weather was glorious, with temperatures of 22degrees celsius.
We were met on arrival by the owners father and another caravanner, who were extremely helpful in settling us in. We occupied a very level pitch which made it so easy to set up. We were on our own for most of the time and the peacefulness was glorious
We had checked with the owner Paul b4 arrival as to how good the TV signal was and were told 'it wasn't that great' We were very pleasantly surprised at the quality of reception.
We have a fairly modern van with a tilt and turn aerial and built in booster. We had to adjust it a few times depending on whether we were watching BBC or ITV. Curiously however, a caravan only approximately 30-40 yards away from us with an identical set up to ours, couldn't get a thing! We also brought with us a typical house TV aerial which also gave very good reception on at least one channel
All the plaudits about this site are well tabulated and justified so I am not going to repeat them. We loved the animals, especially the chickens, which produced by far the best free range eggs I have had, and I have eaten hundreds from many different campsites. There were also 3 sheep, 3 goats, 2 geese, and 2 black ducks. The regular sound of pheasants croaking reminded us that we were in the country.
For the uninitiated, Thornton Le Dale, or Thornton Dale, depending on which approach road you use to enter the village, as the site description states, is 'chocolate boxey', without any exaggeration. The walks up and down the beautiful beck with the thatched cottage and pond, are an absolute pleasure. There are fabulous woodland walks too, and all within a 2 minute walk from the site.
As you can probably gather, this site is very high on my extensive list of all time favourite sites. I have however one slight niggle which I didn, t have the gumption to bring to Pauls attention and now wish I had. The small fenced off area where the WC waste gets emptied, has a water hose that is used to rinse out the cassette. There is another hose which provides separate drinking water on the other side of the fenced off area, well away from the WC disposal area. The tap to this hose was 'wedged' into the fence at quite a high level which can make it difficult to fill containers.
I regret not pointing this out to Paul at the time, but he is such a busy man and such a nice chap with always plenty to do, I didn't want to bother him with my petty complaint. He is always looking for new initiatives and ways of bettering the site. It is very obvious that lots of money thought and effort has been put into the site. There is every likelihood that he has already sorted it.
Please do not let my negative comments dissuade you from visiting this site as believe me, the many, many positive things about this place far outweigh any minor negatives. To sum it up there are thee words that really describe this site, location, location, location

This was our second visit to Prospect Farm having spent a very enjoyable weekend there just over 12 months earlier. It was encouraging to see that a relatively new site is developing so well.
A very well run, clean and tidy site with separate fields for tents and campervans.
Our children loved the farm animals and helped Thomas and Henry (the site owners charming children) with the daily round of egg collecting.
Since our previous visit, the site has a new shower and toilet facilities and we were told that more facilities are planned for the near future.
The site is easy access onto the Dalby forest trails. Paul and Sue, the site owners are naturally very knowledgeable of the local area so we took the opportunity to enjoy one of their guided bike tours through the woods.
We were treated to some amazing scenery great cycling trails, a journey that only local inside knowledge can provide.
I probably shouldn't tell you about the secret tea room we were guided to, the break was well deserved and the cream teas are to die for!
I thoroughly recommend a visit to this campsite, whether its for the chocolate box village, cycling, pubs, fish and chips or just a relaxing break in Yorkshire.
