I chose this site hoping it would be a safe bet for my first time camping wife. It was. The site is quite small, but all the better for this. It was very quiet by day and night. Next to the tent part of the site is the owner's goat, duck and chicken paddock - which was great for our 5 year old - occasionally a lone chicken wanders around the tents for even more amusement.
There was no noise at all from these animals at night - instead there was the occasional owl hoot and fox bark.
The site really is in the centre of the village which has the advantages of good pubs, a village chippy, a duck pond, an interesting motor museum (£2 entry charge) a small supermarket and an unexpectedly good playground.
The site owners are very friendly, thoughtful and helpful and in no way overbearing. The site also provides off road cycle hire; the bikes are very good quality and well maintained.
The pitches were reasonably flat, well drained and the turf in very good condition.
Further afield there's Eden Camp, Whitby, Scarborough, Robin Hoods Bay and Pickering (where there's a small ironmongers/camping store).
My only negative comment is that there is only one permanent shower/toilet unit (although there was a Portaloo 'emergency' unit too) and one wash up facility. But the hot water was always hot and in good supply; the loo/shower is modern and kept very clean and in reality we didn't need to wait/queue for any great length of time.

I came here with my boyfriend as a treat from my Mum after my A-Level Exams. We aimed to have a really relaxing long weekend; which is exactly what we got!
As the campsite isn't very large, there was ample peace and quiet. At one point we were the only campers there! The animals were an added bonus. We particularly enjoyed watching the guinea pigs run around, chasing the chicken that had worked out how to get out of the coop away from our barbecue and feeding the goats handfuls of grass - we missed them when we'd gone back home.
We didn't have a car with us so couldn't travel far. However, we didn't really want to. We just explored the village which was about 2 minutes down the road and enjoyed a Sunday Lunch in a local pub.
The washing up area and toilet/shower were kept very clean. Perhaps another sink or two, as well as another shower separate from the toilet would probably be a good idea, as when we arrived the site was busy and we did have to queue in order to wash up and take a shower. As we were never in a rush to go anywhere, we simply took our time having breakfast and allowed the campers that were going for days out to get ready first.
The site owners were very friendly, helpful and accommodating. They made sure we were okay (it was our first camping trip after all, and we didn't have a car if there was an emergency). We were also allowed to keep some ice packs in the fridge in order to keep our food fresh especially as we had very hot weather.
All in all, we had a fantastic weekend and are hoping to repeat the experience again this year. I would definitely recommend this site to anyone whether they have a young family, want to go for walks or bike rides, or, like us, just want to have a relaxing weekend.

Enjoyed staying at this site with hubby so much in May that I returned in June, minus hubby but with my brothers 3 children aged 14, 9 & 6.
The kids enjoyed the site and we had a lovely day out in Bridlington.
As we were only staying one night I didn't bring all the cooking gear with us, so on the evening we had some lovely fish and chips from the chip shop round the corner from the site and then visited a local pub (The Buck), which is very welcoming to families.
The next morning we had breakfast at Baldersons cafe, who were only too happy to make exactly what the kids wanted(very picky eaters !) and the youngest loved the play area in the garden.
We then enjoyed a walk round the village shops and duckling spotting along the stream.
It was a lovely stay and the kids are already nagging to go back.

Visited this site in June 2011 in our motorhome. The site is very well run. The 'quiet' policy works well without being oppressive. The owners are friendly, helpful and accessible without being intrusive.
The facilities are pleasant and modern and are cleaned regularly to a high standard. There is ample space for children to play. The site is very friendly towards and suitable for dogs with lots of dog walking places adjacent.
It takes only a couple of minutes to walk into village which has lots of shops, cafes and pubs.
There is a post office, hardware stores, clothing stores as well as various tourist type shops. We had an excellent experience during our stay here.
We will definitely visit again, soon I hope.

This was my second time staying at this campsite. It's in a perfect location as it feels like it's in the middle of no where but it's only a 2 minute walk away from the shops, cafes, pubs, etc. It's a small campsite but was perfect for us (3 children and 1 adult).
The owners of this family run site are very welcoming and friendly. The site has a newly refurbished shower, toilet and wash room and a port-a-loo for when the wash room is busy.
Next to the campsite there is a field with some animals - goats, sheep, ducks, geese and chickens (that are very popular with children!) The hens lay lovely eggs which are sold for 90p for half a dozen. The animals are quiet at night though, so have no fear of being woken up by them!
The site has a 'no noise after 11pm' rule which everyone abides by making it a pleasant place to be at night. I have no criticism to give this campsite and I've really enjoyed both of my stays there and will definitely be returning again next year!

This was my second May Bank holiday spent at this site, and we had a wonderful stay - despite the Bank Holiday Monday rain!
This remains a charming, small and friendly site (see my previous review), which has been improved by installing a powerful shower in the wash room, with plenty of free hot water. Having experienced the site after a full day's rain, it is good to note that pitch did not become waterlogged or muddy.
It is advertised as a quiet site, and the owner did ask a group of campers to turn their music down one evening when it could be heard around the site.
Another lovely stay, we think we'll make this an annual event!

Lovely quiet campsite. Small but with large pitches some with hook ups. Basic but very clean up to date facilities which have been recently constructed. The owners are updating as they go along and more improvements will be made.
Owners very welcoming. If your a mountain biker/cyclist there is storage facilities on site. Which I used. If your a couple and hubby is into cycling and you want a quiet afternoon reading this site is ideal.
The site is geared (excuse the pun) towards Mountain Bikes with organised trips to Dalby Forest.
Its not a site for large noisy groups. Its based near to houses. The site for me was a return to the values of camping and will be returning in the near future.

We visited this site at a quiet time of year and arrived in the dark. The owner greeted us with torches which really helped with setting up. The actual caravan site is tiny but perfectly formed and right in the centre of the village. The facilities are basic but beautifully clean and a lot of thought has gone into providing extras such as jet washes for cleaning bikes etc.Our children are past the ages of using play parks on most sites but they loved the rope swing that was on the site- even in the dark and cold. This site will get better and better as the owners develop it and we look forward to returning.

Great, family friendly site, a hidden gem in N Yorks. Facilities still under development but plenty of notice given and plenty of wheezes around difficulties (the aforementioned showers are great value and hot water is available upon request.)
The owners obviously treat the site as an extension of their home both in the fab service they offer and the protectiveness that a calm pleasant family atmosphere is maintained.
Their two charming boys Henry and Thomas are always on hand to help or actively sell their farm produce ;-).
Brilliantly placed both for the local village shops and amenities and the area's tourist hotspots. Would highly recommend to all families!

Camped here for three nights; had booked E/H for the three nights and were told when we arrived that we couldn't have E/H as there was a 'technical fault'. Considering the lady had both mine and my partner’s mobile numbers-a quick common courtesy phone call to tell us the situation would have been appreciated! Having told her we would ring around to find a site with a hook-up she appeared with an E/H run off somewhere else-to which we were extremely appreciative.
After this initial hic-up our stay was fairly adequate.
One toilet for the whole site was a little frustrating-although this was kept clean. My partner wasn't too impressed with the additional porta-loo in the camping field, with a bucket to the side for 'used' toilet paper.
There was also no wash-up facility or hot water. The owners did however allow campers to use their downstairs shower in their house for £1. This was much appreciated if rather inconvenient.
Other families on the site were quite noisy, with lots of children and dogs it seemed. A few of the larger tents were drinking and shouting till the early hours-again this wasn't something that necessarily bothered us.
The village of Thornton-le-Dale was very picturesque; we particularly liked the New Inn pub and restaurant. There was a fish & chip shop and a small supermarket all very close to the site.
