Stayed in one of the wigwams. Fantastic views when the weather broke. Friendly staff and a well kept park was well worth the trek to get to. It only has one pub nearby but nice grub. Toilets on site a bit small and crowded but hey it was August. The area is beautiful and a high single track road gets you to the site but its a once in a lifetime place to visit. I'm sure you wont be disappointed.

We stayed here as the weather wasn't great and we planned to wild camp but could not find a suitable place nearby. We had seen lovely photos of Applecross and were disappointed we could not wild camp. This is the only campsite for miles around that area and as we the weather was a bit wet we decided to stay the night, last minute at this camp site. We paid £8 per person which I thought was quite pricey considering we had to park on a grassed area and had no electric hook up

There is a lovely coffee shop in the main building. We did not use it but it looked lovely. We parked on the grass area and I'm so glad we were in a campervan as it was heavy rain and not ideal for some of the people trying to put a tent up! The shower block is not too far away but to get to it you have to walk over the pot holed makeshift road and walk across grass, again not great in the rain/when the ground is wet. There was only 2 female showers but there are about 4 sinks and 4 toilets in the block. The showers did not have any extraction fans and you found your clothing and towel wet before you had the showers. I managed to use the larger shower but its not ideal in size. For some strange reason they clean the female showers/toilets 3-4 pm and the male 4-5 pm just when people are coming back from walking and want to use the shower!

There are 2 washing up sinks in the toilet block but these as the showers are not enough for the amount of people there. There was a washing machine and tumble dryer which you can use but I was annoyed that I could not use it as it was being used by the cleaner to clean the camp sites washing! They need to have a separate one for the staff's use and one for the camp site users. It looks like they are building 2 new toilets/wash rooms but they were not finished and need to be completed asap for the benefit of the campers.

I am glad I used the shower in the afternoon as the following morning there was a massive queue to use them. I think its a nice camp site but the owners needs to provide more facilities especially for the money they charge!

Very disappointing stay here which we had been looking forward to. We asked for our money back and cut short our stay. After a 15 hour journey, we pitched up - the road is full of potholes, everywhere was waterlogged and muddy, it is basic and crowded. Tired and hungry we tried to get a pizza from the Flower Tunnel, having read so much about it, but arriving at 8.55 were told that they finished serving at 9. Kept awake all night by rowdy people in next unit, very close to us, woke up and went to breakfast. Again they had finished serving. Young temporary staff, very poor management, unfriendly, dark toilets, overcrowded; both nights we had little sleep, lots and lots of bikers revving their engines at unsociable hours (there is a 11pm curfew, but this is one time limit they ignore). We have 4 young children, and it was really hard just to do the basics to feed them and let them sleep. There is not a shop on this site and the Applecross Inn was crowded.

Other reviewers have covered many of the main features, so here's a few others.

Campsite reception (when I visited) was at the bar/restaurant, meaning lots of new arrivals waiting to check in when I arrived around dinnertime. Looking at their website recently it seems this is (now) done at a designated point open a couple of hours a day.

As others have described, there's a main field near the entrance and an 'overflow' a bit of a walk from the facilities (which were fine). No problem with noise when I was there. The overflow field got pretty wet & muddy, but hey, it's the west coast of Scotland. Take a torch, as the track thru the site has potholes that collect water--your eyes won't find them in the dark but your feet will.

Oddly, I didn't really get a sense of overlooking the bay--due to the amount of trees. This isn't a criticism, as the site would probably be exposed without them.

Good food at the bar, although choosing to go on a Friday evening (especially as one of only 2 dry places open in Applecross) it was inevitably busy. The surrounding area is good for a bit of mooching, with the chapel, gardens (and cafe!) and signposted walks. Obviously being a low-key, remote place, it's best for people who don't mind making their own entertainment or being out in the elements.

We spent 4 nights in one of the lovely Wigwams/camping huts at Applecross. They are great! Large, clean, dry, cosy, well lit with a decent heater, an electric socket and a lockable door that you can put 'on the latch' (so you don't lock yourself out).

A raised bench/bed meant that whoever slept on it didn't need to get right down to floor level to sleep. The sleeping mats, although a little firm for me, were much more comfortable than any of the others we encountered on our 'Wigwam' tour of Scotland. Ours also had a little 'porch' area where you could sit outside and enjoy the views.

It's worth noting that Camping Huts no 1-5 overlook the mountains and are quite close to the shower block. Huts 6-10 overlook the sea/Rasaay, with a bit more of a walk to the facilities. Hut 5 has quite steep steps up to it- the first step is a good couple of feet off the floor.

Totally agree with other comments that the toilets are not enough for the huge number of people on site but no grumbles about cleanliness at all.

Not much for kids to do but our 9 year old managed to occupy himself ok.

The flower tunnel food/ambience is great and the views and local walks are fantastic.

The Applecross Inn is brilliant- worth waiting for a table.

Overall, my favourite site in Scotland- mostly for it's gorgeous location.

I'm just back from 4 nights here. The site has spectacular views, the staff were lovely and the facilities are fine.

Site

I pitched up just beside the gate to the 'path' to the Applecross Inn, it proved to be a popular route for folks so perhaps pitch slightly further away if you want quiet nights.

The weather was mixed with a couple of stormy nights. The field closest to reception seemed to be a bit more sheltered but certainly the views from the second field were worth the wilder weather. Perhaps I need to change my tent, which is about 25 years old and seemed to leak a bit. The ground was a bit waterlogged and some of the heavier campervans got stuck!

Food

The Applecross Inn is well worth visiting. The seafood was everybit as good as I had been told and prices reasonable, the Isle of Skye beers excellent, and the staff were just wonderful. Be prepared to share tables when it's busy (all the time as far as I could see)

I ate in the Flower Tunnel twice due to lack of gas and slightly inclement weather, it is great for home made cakes ! all calorie free and count as part of the 5 a day or so I was assured.

Next time I'm not bothering with taking food other than breakfast to this site as with the Inn and the Flower Tunnel, I could have done quite well!

Toilet Block

The toilet block was adequate. They have changed the cleaning times to mid afternoon when you can use the toilets in the cafe. It would have been good to have toilet facilities at both ends of the site as it is a fair walk, especially in the rain and during the night, if pitched at the far end of the site.

Surrounding area

The drive over the Pass was 'interesting”. The single track road has some very tight turns and extremely steep in places. The challenge is what other drivers are doing. If you are coming down from the top PLEASE give way to drivers going uphill!

I drove round to Sheildaig on a clear sunny day. You could see almost the entire length of Skye, Rona and Raasay, up to Gairloch Peninsula and even over to Harris and Lewis. Well worth the drive.

There's not a lot to do except enjoy the beauty of the scenery and the explore the area but that's no bad thing. Take a book or two, just in case the weather is not so good and remember rain is simply liquid sunshine.

The campsite was very basic, The showers and toilets weren't as clean as they could have been. Loved the cafe and the fact you can take away food although soft drinks were really expensive. Not much to do around the place though unless you are a walker especially for kids if its raining. The childs play area in the cafe is a good idea but unfortunately when we took our 3 year old it was full of older kids who ended up knocking him over and jumping on him a few times so we had to leave.

We spent 2 nights here in a camping hut with our 2 children. After a 10 hour drive we didn't want to put up the tent particularly as we were only spending two nights. It was ideal: warm, clean and dry. 4 mattresses provided, a heater and 2 sockets. We booked a wishbone (taller in the centre) - plot numbers 8 & 9 have the best sea views and 8 has a window in the door too. Good value. We just provided a kettle and bedding. We ate breakfast in the flower tunnel cafe which was good as we didn't have to get out all the cooking equipment. Dinner at the Applecross Inn is not to be missed if you like fresh fish - their fish and chips is the best I have ever had. They serve food all day but you can't book unless you are staying at the inn. We ate early (6pm) and were able to get a table without waiting.

The only down side was that the site was very muddy and the hut was at the top of a grassy slope from the road. Difficult to park the car and very easy to slip on the way to the shower block. The camping fields were even more churned up. It doesn't always rain in Scotland though, the last time we visited about 14 years ago it was dry! There aren't really enough facilities for the size of site - only 2 showers in the ladies so be prepared to queue.

I would recommend the site if you want stunning scenery, a drive over the Belach na Ba is an experience if it is clear - what a road! This was the first time we have stayed in a camping hut but we would do it again for a short trip, it was great in that we didn't have a wet tent to take down!

We only spent one night at this site due to a pre planned program to tour the highlands, but we wanted to stay longer !

Lovely site, with cracking views across Raasay and Skye. And not even five minutes walk to the Applecross Inn and Bay.

Applecross itself was a lovely little village, with very friendly staff at the pub.

The site staff were also very friendly and there were good facilities, albeit the toilet block was a little dark, due to dark wood ceiling and red fixtures. My only gripe was the shower block was closed from 0700 to 0800 for cleaning. Being an early riser, meant I had to wait.

The Flower tunnel was lovely. They had a good stocked bar, serving nice looking food (not tried personally) and a nice little play area to keep the little ones happy whilst we relaxed with a drink.

The New Looking Camping Huts / Pods look brilliant and we would consider them if we return with just a tent.

We got to Applecross over the infamous 'Pass of the Cattle'. We were in a 26 foot motor home (Adria sport 660) and I didn't have any problems. Just keep at least one passing place gap between you and the person in front of you and don't try to rush it. The views from the top were spectacular! (google it to see!)

Just around the headland was the bothy and bay which featured in Monty Halls Great Escape. We made a visit there and tried to run up the sand dune, which was about 100 feet!. Note I said tried!

We are already saying we want to go back to the site as we liked it so much.

From this site we drove the coastal road north towards Ullapool. The 'Whistle Stop Cafe' at Kinlochewe is definitely worth a stop. Looks like a village hall, but food was fantastic and very reasonably priced.

I was attracted to Applecross, not by the Monty Halls' programme but the Beleach Na Ba. I hadn't even heard of Monty Halls! When the visibility is good, the road to Applecross across the mountain is second to none. If you have a keen right foot or a fast bike, it's great fun. There are plenty of straights and corners and when you can see for miles ahead, you can really open the taps up. It's not suitable for caravans (The sign says so) but there is another link to the peninsula across the coast. That road isn't much different, single track, up/down and very twisty. Take your time and enjoy the scenery!

The campsite was only just open for the season when I first visited, so was very quiet. The facilities are basic but everything works okay. There is no mobile phone or 3GS coverage on the peninsula despite the large mast with microwave antennas near the main town. Presumably the locals don't want it? There is a coinbox on site for checking in anyway, which was novel.

The main attraction to the peninsula seems to be the Applecross Inn and rightfully so. It's always busy and there are few reserved tables, presumably for the residents. People seem to come from miles around and not just the campsite to eat/drink. The staff are very friendly and the food is great and keenly priced. What more do you want? Highly recommended.

If you fancy a walk, there are a few trails to explore and obviously you can venture across to Monty's cottage (whoever he is!) by the beach.

Applecross is very, very quiet so if you fancy getting away from it all and I mean ALL, I would recommend it. It's not too far from Inverness with plenty of shops and touristy stuff. If you are touring the Highlands, I would definitely not miss it.
