Like other reviewers I am reluctant to let on where Pentwyn is as it's such a gem of a campsite. A lovely spot to pitch a tent at the foot of a path that takes you all the way up to Fan Y Big and on to Pen Y Fan. The description of the facilities on this website is accurate and we had all we needed in the way of loo, shower and washing up. The snug must be very handy if the weather goes bad but we were lucky enough to not need it. I didn't take the plunge in the river but having had a paddle I reckon it'd be good for a dip on a hot day. We spent hours watching the birdlife and the clouds rolling off the hills and the campfires make the site very friendly at night. It's a short drive to get provisions and important to bring an OS map with you to get the most out of the surrounding area. We did a walk along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal and the River Usk on one day, a change from the mountains and good if the weather isn't so good. Thomas is a very welcoming host and we will be back for more.

A little gem! The farmer, Thomas, is very welcoming and the atmosphere very relaxed without lots of rules and regulations. The top camping field is pretty flat and has great views. The toilets, shower and washing up room are basic but do the job. Fantastic location, you can walk from the site into the hills. Free fire pits and reasonably priced logs, although they could have been a bit drier.

A really excellent small campsite. Facilities are clean and although somewhat limited (there are only two toilets, one handbasin and a sink for washing up) this was never a problem. The farmer is friendly and the grass is well-kept in the camping area; indeed after a night of rain and gales there was barely any grass or mud on our kit! We loved being there and will definitely be going back one day!

Really enjoyed staying at this campsite. The pitches are very flat with a hedge to protect from the weather. We had really bad wind and sleet but weren't too badly affected. The views are fantastic and a great base to climb to Pen Y Fan and other ridges nearby. Would definitely stay again and although there are negatives below, the positives outweigh them.

Positives, flat pitches, clean toilets with toilet roll and towels/soap, toaster and kettle in an adjoining room really great idea. Local village pub a fabulous walk across the countryside of about 1. 5miles. Decent food but very expensive. You can have a fire in pits that you can borrow. The farmer and his family are very friendly and laid back. Great base to walk from. No problem taking the dog and happy that he wasn't on a lead (very well behaved).

Negatives - Although the shower is roomy your 50p lasts no more than a couple of minutes and the shower dribbles more than showers. Having to pay for this on top of the £8 a night I think is a little expensive. You need a good £1 to £1. 50 to shower well. Logs at £5 a bag are expensive, take your own. Fire pits need some holes in the bottom to create a decent, warm fire. If you have a young family there isn't a great deal of space to play ball games (not an issue for us but would have been a few years ago). No hot water in the toilet block. Not major issues apart from the shower which could do with a bit of an improvement.

This is a basic but lovely site with direct access to walks in the Brecon Beacons. Despite the weather being pretty poor the kids loved it. We were 2 families of 4 adults and 5 children and had loads of space (perhaps because of the poor weather). The farmer is very friendly and helpful and it was pretty good value. The views from the camping field (when it cleared up) were stunning, although it does make it a bit exposed in poor weather. The kids loved seeing the cows and horses, and playing by the stream at the bottom of site. The fire pits available were free and very good, logs were £5 a bag. The facilities were basic but just what we wanted, there were 2 unisex toilets - which may be a bit difficult if you wanted a private sink to wash at (only cold tap in toilets), but there is a huge single shower which charges 50p which we tended to use for changing/washing. There are also a couple of rooms to sit in, one with washing up sink, table and kettle. Some campers made good use of this room in wet weather but we were happy under a tarp with a fire, but the kettle was great as a quick way to boil water. Other campers said there was a pub 20 minutes walk but we drove to another, The White Hart at Talybont (family of 4 cost £31) which had parking and was lovely. We are already thinking about when we can go back and we only got home yesterday!

I stayed here for a short break with a friend. We were one of two tents on the site. I thoroughly enjoyed it and was pleasantly surprised by the facilities. I didn't have any kids with me so can't really comment on the child friendliness of this site but when I was a kid I would have loved it here! There is a stream to play in and plenty of space to run around. The Farm is at the end of a track so there's not really any traffic to worry about but this is a working farm and the facilities are all in the farm yard.

You have the choice of two camping areas - the top part of the field, which is nice and flat and you can easily park next to your tent. The lower part of the field is down a steep slope, slightly rougher with flat areas and next to the stream. We opted for the top as it was April and still quite wet. If you prefer the seclusion of the stream, you'll have to walk up that slope to get to the facilities in the farm yard.

I usually go for sites with nothing more than a tap and a toilet as I'm less likely to have to share the site with loads of other people. In the farm yard there is the usual outdoor tap and some recycling bins in an outbuilding, but also a converted stable block with some extras. There is a large shower (I can't comment as I didn't use it but it looked quite new and clean). In the next stable are two toilets and cold water sinks. The next stable is set up as a kitchen with hot and cold water, worktops, a fridge/freezer, an electric kettle and a table with chairs. The walls in here have some local OS maps pinned up so you can plan walks while you wait for the kettle to boil. The last stable is 'the snug' and includes a lovely battered old sofa and a dart board. Being an old stable, the whole is building is 'rustic' and a little draughty in places but it was a haven for us when the cold April wind brought us some big fat hailstones! We took our stoves up there and cooked under cover while watching the weather howling through the farm yard. It was lovely. These facilities make the site particularly suitable for DofE groups and the like, so I wouldn't be surprised to find yourself sharing them with a load of teenagers at peak times.

The farmer was friendly and helpful. He was busy farming most of the time but could be found if you needed anything. I'm glad to hear he's started providing fire pits and wood as being able to have a fire really makes a perfect campsite for me, but seeing black circles all over the field can be a shame and this field is nicely mown (on the flat parts) and well taken care of.

The site is in a wonderful location, perfect for walking with good access to Fan-y-Big and the rest of the Beacons horseshoe. For a less hilly walk, I can recommend following the stream up to the head of the valley where there are some small waterfalls. Perfect for a picnic with the kids. The view up the valley from the site is beautiful.

Wildlife is a big part of camping for me and this place didn't disappoint. Buzzards, Red Kites, Swallows, Owls, Woodpeckers etc. In abundance. We set up some trail cameras down by the stream and got some lovely footage of badgers too.

I can't say much about local pubs etc, as I don't tend to visit any when camping. The site is in a fantastic location for walking, you would probably need to take the car to get to shops and pubs etc. Pentwyn Farm is at the end of a nice little winding lane and feels remote, which is how I like it!

Take care when making your way there. This is not the only Pentwyn farm in this area!

If you like a good simple campsite where you can get away from it all, this is a good choice. The extra facilities don't make it any less my kind of place. Great value for money. I almost didn't review it as I wanted to keep it to myself but it looks like the cat's out of the bag. Please don't all rush there at once, you wouldn't like it, it's not your kind of place. ;)

A great campsite with fantastic views. On arrival we discovered all the fire pits had been taken however the owner (Thomas) said we could have a fire on the ground anyway which was great, you just have to pay £5 for a bag of wood/ kindling and this lasted us 2 nights.

It was quite busy (being a Bank Holiday) however this site still felt intimate and quiet compared to many other campsites we've stayed at. It's on a farm which is quite secluded along very narrow lanes so perhaps that's why (and this is a good thing!).

The toilet and shower facilities were ok and the only suggestion would be for some hooks inside the shower room to hang clothes on (there is a clothes horse but it's not really big enough).

It's also a great location to explore the Brecon Beacons, with the main A40 road only 10 mins drive away. We would definitely recommend it and hope to re-visit it sometime in the future.

What a lovely campsite. Beautiful surroundings, and provided us a perfect base to start our walks from. The grass was nicely mowed making it lovely and soft to collapse on after a long day's walking!

For us, having a campfire is very important in a campsite. Pentwyn farm was great for this. There were a few fire pits around, but not enough when we arrived. No problem - as the owners were happy for fires to be lit on the ground - great! When a fire pit did become available, it appears at our tent when we returned from walking. Thanks Thomas!

Bags of logs could be purchased for £5. My one and only very minor issue was there could have been a few more smaller logs/sticks to help start the fire. But this is really a very picky point in an otherwise fabulous campsite.

Shower and toilets were immaculate, clean and tidy, and plenty of loo roll! As other reviewers have mentioned, there is only one shower, and 2 toilets. There were several other groups around while we were there, but we never noticed or had to queue.

Easy to find if you follow the directions(!), and only a 5-10min drive into Brecon.

Fantastic campsite! Thank you Pentwyn Farm.

Just spent four days at this fantastic campsite. The owner Thomas was extremely friendly and helpful throughout our visit and made our little boys holiday by letting him sit in the tractor. The site is on a working farm which just makes it even better - was allowed to go round the farm looking at the animals and watching whatever work was going on. There were two camping fields and were allowed to pitch wherever you wanted and not assigned to a specific pitch. The views are stunning and at night you could hear owls and the skies were great. If this wasn't enough - it also has a stream running along the bottom which was deep enough to swim in which was fantastic. The facilities were very clean and modern although there is only one shower but this did not seem to be an issue.

A lovely narrow road, but, out of the way campsite with beautiful views which can be breath taking. Facilities were more than adequate for someone like me. Toilets and dish washing areas were kept clean and plenty of toilet rolls in the toilet area, showers are on a meter.

Site has 2 sections, lower and upper. ONLY 4x4 or light loaded vehicles are best for lower section.

Site allows fires (fire pits provided and wood, (wheel barrows also provided)), and is open all year round. This site also recycles which I found very useful.

5 minutes away is the Cantref farm which is ideal for a family day out, but need plenty of money. (((Also be careful of pony trek rides in the lanes))).

Town is only 10 minutes away and is well sign posted for parking (some one way systems).

Overall. I hope to do some winter camping here 2014/2015.
