April 2004 After a pretty manic couple of months, my boyfriend and I decided we needed to get away for a few days! Having never been camping myself, I was a little concerned when he suggested it but eventually agreed to try it on the provisory that we take the airbed and that we check the toilets before we check in. Oh Boy! Am I hooked on the camping experience now!
West Bay was recommended to us by my boyfriends dad as he as previously been there for a spot of fishing. Having checked the previous reviews on UKcampsite.co.uk and reading "Rizzo's" review, I was reluctant to accept this recommendation. I am glad I did now! Just to clear up, the toilet and shower block has been refurbished to a good standard with powerful showers, clean toilets, several decent sized mirrors and hair dryers - the only complaints I have is a few of the seats were a bit loose and the sky light could use a clean.
We were pleasantly surprised to discover that for £8 a night we also had access to the indoor swimming pool and the clubhouse.
Firstly, looking at the pool, it was a reasonable sized pool of a constant 1.2m (4 feet) in depth. It also has a small kids pool, which couldn't be more than 45cm (18inches) deep. There is also a largish slide in the main pool and a small side and squirty frog in the kid’s pool. The actually pool appeared to be very clean (admittedly, it was the beginning of season when we went and I don’t know what it would be like after the school holidays when hundreds of kids had been using it.)
The actual building the pool is in could use a bit of TLC, there are very limited changing rooms and the communal showers were out of order at the time of our visit. Also, a lick of paint wouldn’t go amiss! Other than this, we enjoyed our splash around!
There is also a small shop, which was averagely priced, I would say in line with your local Spar shop.
The amusement arcade offers air hockey (I was 13 again!) and a mini 10 pin bowling game.
At the club house, there is a restaurant offering reasonable priced food and a bar serving average priced drinks (about £5 - 6 for a large glass of wine, a pint, a packet of crisps and some nuts) There is also a full weeks evening entertainment planned including things such as bingo, karaoke, a quiz, bands and cabaret. There is also some kind of kids club just next door which has a pretty fun looking room full of ball pits, big connect 4 games and so on.
The area is also very pretty with the beach being just 2 minutes away. At the moment the pier is under going major renovations so you cant walk along it which my boyfriend was a little upset by (he wanted to fish off the end! - bless him) There is a steep track up to the cliff top for the more energetic of you which I imagine would give you a lovely view and you can walk all the way along the beach to the next camping site Freshwater. The beach was a pebble one but was clean and worth a visit.
West bay offers a couple of pubs, a LOT of fish and chip shops, a very nice (if a little expensive) fish restaurant and a few seaside shops. All in all a nice, almost traditional, place for a quiet get away!
I will certainly consider it as a place to stay if visiting the area again (which I think is most likely!)

August 2003 When we arrived at West Bay we were horrified as the touring pitches appeared to be up a mountain! However when we got to the pitch it wasn't too bad. The pitches are terraced and are fairly level once on your terrace. I wouldn't like to be at the top though, I'd feel like a nanny goat by the end of the week!, although the views are fantastic at the top, right across the bay.
The condition of the grass was awful, but it was at the end of the season. The pitches are very small too, 18.5 x 28feet.
I was assured by the receptionist that the toilets are due for refurbishment in 2004. Not before time.
Once they are refurbed, I feel this site would deserve more than the 3*s it has. The entertainment is good, the location is second to none, I would definately go again.

june 03 My husband and i stayed here for 2 weeks, the touring site is set looking over the site and harbour/sea. I wash dissapointed with the toilets they could have been cleaned more often, especially at the weekends when it was busy, i think it was mainly down to untrained children, otherwise the showers were very powerful and you had space to move in them too, though there was only 4 of them. The entertainment on the site was excellant for adults and kids. There are no plugs in the potwash, but tissue comes in handy there. The food in the harbour bar is of poor standed, do not advise the jacket spuds, though the pizza's were ok. On the whole we had a good holiday and the location is great and lots to see and do nearby. ps if you have long hair like me i advise you to take your own hairdryer as theirs would take you all day to dry.
