Just returned from a week's stay at Riverside and were sadly disappointed.
There was no dog exercising area even though I had rung prior to booking our holiday to check that there was. Dogs must be exercised offsite.
After arriving at lunchtime we were surprised to find the camp shop didn't even sell bread so wouldn't recommend arriving without a trip to nearby Sainsburys.
We were appalled to find only 3 fire extinguishers on site that were not condemned!
The play area was fine for our 6 year old but frankly unusable for our 2 year old and also not fully fenced off even though situated alongside the entrance road to the site.
The swimming pool was one of the main selling points of the site and we were unhappy to find the main pool was icy cold and not filtered. After questioning staff we were told first time that it was on and we couldn't expect it to be hot. When we asked a second time we were told that they had run out of gas for the pool but it was now sorted. The pool was still not working when we left.
Their claims to being a 'quiet, secluded site' were laughable as the nights were backed by noise from the road, rail and airport.
Showers and toilets were basic but clean. Would recommend they invest in better bins as every morning we were greeted by rubbish strewn all over toilet block area by animals/birds.

This was mine and jacobs first proper camping experience. We had to go to Plymouth to pick up a new car so decided to lug the tent down on the train. Picked up the car and stumbled upon this site. We arrived in rain, reception staff were very friendly and within a few minutes we had our pitch (£21 for the night) which was level and under a tree. The site is tranquil and had a friendly feel. The shower block was basic and could probably do with modernising but the showers were warm and reasonably clean.
We popped in to Plymouth and had the best faggots, chips and peas known to man! (Barbican fish bar.Try it!) we returned to the site and jacob went to the games room while I had a beer. There was Bingo going on which seemed fun and everyone was having a good time. The staff were friendly and bar prices good. We were going to stay another night but, when I returned from the shower in the morning, the rain was so bad the tent began to leak! So we decided to pack up.
Overall, for a first experience albeit just one night, we had a good time and if I were down that way again I would go back.

A very well kept site with level pitches and good shelter for the tents.
Has an outside play area for the kids as well as an indoor room. TV room restaurant and bar. Don't expect gourmet but prices reflect this and are very reasonable. A great pool area although advertised as heated it was freezing!
The shower block was ok but showers never really made it to hot. Very good washing up and Laundry area.
With a big supermarket a 5 minute drive this site is well worth it to explore Plymouth and surrounding countryside. Owner has embarked upon an ambitious chalet building scheme so half the site seems lost to tents and vans but cannot knock the half that is left at all.
Kids loved it and we would definitely return.

When we stayed the site was nearly full. Access is easy (We are novices). The staff were friendly. There is a pool and a bar with food available but we did not use them so cannot comment. The shower blocks were cleaned once a day and were OK but tired and in need of a revamp
The site is a couple of miles outside the centre. If you do not want to use your car there is a park and ride nearby but we used the normal bus stop which is closer (turn right at the end of the approach road and walk up the hill a short way) Frequent bus service to Plymouth city centre. Handy for Sainsburys and there is a Somerfield in the Texaco garage as you travel towards Plympton for papers food etc before Sainsburys opens on a Sunday morning.
There is a McDonalds on the road to Plympton as you exit the big roundabout off the A38 flyover. Platters on the Barbican near the Mayflower steps is worth a visit if you like sea food. You can have anything from fish chips and mushy peas to more expensive dishes (like scallops provencale as recommended by Andrew Lloyd-Webber who is a regular visitor when one of his shows is being staged at the Theatre Royal). The Theatre Royal puts on some top notch shows. There is the Plymouth Aquarium, a multiplex cinema, boat trips and Dartmoor is on the doorstep. The Barbican has loads of bars and some of them put on live music during the spring/summer.
Riverside is an ideal base for touring the surrounding area and we would definitely stay there again.

Located in a beautiful piece of countryside which is wonderful considering you are almost in the heart of Plymouth. Probably suited to the more ' mature ' campers and not a lot going on for little ones. There is a seasonal pool and club house and if you like sports then you can go cockroach stomping in the toilets at night ;0) Basic shower / toilet block and washing facilities. Not the cheapest of campsites and if you happen to be a single male camper then don't expect a warm welcome, in fact, you wont be welcomed at all. Fairly strict campsite and not overly welcoming. Not a campsite I will be returning to I'm afraid. Ideal stop over if you need to be central to Plymouth though and all the nightlife and shopping.

On the whole I found this to be a very good site.
The toilet blocks were always clean and there seemed to be enough shower cubicles with plenty of hot water.
The staff seemed friendly and the location is great for exploring Plymouth and the surrounding area.
The only negatives are that because it's close to Plymouth you can hear noise from the nearby dual carriageway and because of the locality to the airport there's a bit of noise from helicopters and aeroplanes.

Bad (but not too bad!): Wash blocks are not up to Camping or Caravan Club standards. The toilets / showers are OK, with plentiful hot water, but could do with some renovation. This should not put you off visiting this site however.
Good: Whilst seemingly very close to the A38 and out of town shopping outlets, the site could be a million miles away, as once you approach the site you are at the start of the Plym river valley which stretches unspoilt to Dartmoor. From the site you can walk through National Trust woodland, beside the river Plym, along an old tramway and across old viaducts towards the moor. You can also cycle this 7 mile route, following the old Tavistock railway bed, high above the river and pathways. It was so restful in the bright mid-march sunshine. There are even steep woodland trails for the more demanding cyclist.
The site may be within walking distance of a park and ride to Plymouth, near large supermarkets and other outlets and it may be good stop off for the Roscoff ferry or en route to Cornwall, but it is worth a visit just to explore what is right on its doorstep.

Just returned from two weeks at Riverside. Excellent location for touring / sightseeing with English Riviera and Cornwall all within easy reach. Also very good if you enjoy cycling-we cycled the Plym valley and also into the City centre a few times. The site itself is ok, although we found the showers pretty basic and not always clean with locks broken on several shower doors and trays for toiletries also broken. In fairness we did have exceptional levels of rain during our stay and the site was maintained well in view of this. We would consider returning to the site because of the close proximity of local areas of interest and attractions.

There is no doubt that this site benefits from the selection of mature trees and its attractive landscaping. It is very conveniently placed for the city of Plymouth, those taking a stop-over on a long journey to Cornwall, or for the ferry to Roscoff. It was quiet, but may not be when in high season with its restaurant etc.
However I did find plenty of room for improvement. The attitude of the staff upon arrival could hardly be described as welcoming; in fact it was thoroughly grumpy. Our toilet block at the far end of the site had only one fluorescent tube working in what was a rather large building, and remained unheated throughout a chilly end of October stay. A walk to the one nearer reception was needed if one wanted better lighting, and that block was heated too - but only by a fan heater over an ill-fitting door, so it was rather bracing in the early morning. One of the three showers there was out of order, and appeared to have been so for a while.
The grass was neatly trimmed, but the clippings were not picked up. This meant that our caravan got dirty with grass cuttings, along with toilet blocks becoming contaminated too. Things like this are what I call 'attention to detail', and are not taken care of on this site. More worrying was the number of Fire Points around the site which were missing one, or both, of their extinguishers. From the condition of the paint on the backing boards I would judge that this is not exactly a recent problem.
If proximity to the attractions of Plymouth is a priority then I can recommend this site, but if you want that little bit extra that so many sites strive to provide these days you will need to look elsewhere. We will not be staying here again when there is so much competition out there.

Just had torrential RAIN for 8 days straight! We decided that it wasn't worth packing up to come home as the tent hadn't had a chance to dry out. Even the boats taking part in the Fastnet Race retired as the weather was so awful. However, though the campsite got rather soggy I didn't hear of anyone actually getting flooded out. The owners kept the facilities well cleaned in very trying circumstances (including the efforts of one little girl who decided it would be fun to relocate the gravel path into the men's facilities). Although I agree with the earlier comment about the height of the showers, after some exploration I found the showers in the other end of the main block to be a bit higher and would run for a bit longer. But I did feel that at least we were saving water (not that there wasn't sufficient sploshing about outside!). The food in the restaurant is good as is the takeaway, with a reasonable choice of standard dishes: steak, curry, fish and chips and a special each night: BBQ or Sunday roast etc. The playground is more suited to younger children and there is a games room with a few machines. The bingo was good fun, made even better as I managed to win a couple of times! The pitches are level but not over large with mature trees and shrubs. The site is well placed to get into Plymouth with the park and ride just up the road and over the bridge. A few rules and regulations would have been beneficial - we saw little "policing" of pitches and behaviour. We witnessed one couple testing out the water temperature in the swimming pool by dipping their fully shod feet in - didn't fancy swimming in it after that! We certainly found enough to do in the area even with the weather being so awful. The last two days of our holiday were spent in the SUN on the beach at Bigbury on Sea, trying in vain to skim board! Oh my bruises! All things considered (and trying to put the rain out of mind) our stay here was good fun, and the site is good value for money. We'd certainly return to this site, and hopefully we'd get better weather (you couldn't get worse surely) - but what do you expect if you will go camping in August!
