We visited this campsite for the first time, arriving on Tuesday afternoon and leaving after lunch on Thursday. Anyway this site is an excellent site for everyone. Having previously stayed at Pooley Bridge and Glenridding I struggled to find a campsite similar to these in the sense that the campsite is a short walk from an adequate village. Meaning you can travel further afield by car if you wish but if not you can visit the village daily without the need for a car. Hawkshead is a perfect match to our requirements as it has 4 lovely pubs serving fab food, a co-op open 8am till 10pm, a post office, an array of wonderful shops selling anything from camping equipment to gifts to local produce, also a few good little cafes. There is also a beatrix potter museum. The church in the village is beautiful and of great interest. The local bookshop will supply you with a brief history to the village for 50p! Very interesting. The village itself is a step back in time with some of the most amazing aspects of history. I like to enjoy all aspects of camping but especially require a good campsite, good pubs and food. The pubs where always full although nearly September. Campsite fab although as others have said need to put 40p in for a good shower, and need a mallet! Initially the church clock is noticeable but you forget the chime afeter a few hours. Overall 10 out of 10 going again next year, great location in the village and only a few miles from Coniston and about 8 to windermere!

Just got back from the Croft. It was a lovely four days. Site was basic, no shop but the co-op is a very short walk away. Toilets were cleaned twice a day and they were quite clean but then there was a lot of people on the site and there is only so much the owners can do. Site was full to capacity but most abided by the no noise rule. There isn't much for children to do in Hawkshead or the site. Heard people complaining about the children on the site but if you want it quiet go to an adult only site or don't go in the school holidays. Anyway we will be returning next year to take advantage of the walking in the area.

This site is in a excellent location - literally 2 mins over the road from the village which has several good pubs (Had a great sunday lunch in the Queens Head pub), co-op, chemist, newsagent and the usual lakeland gift shops and walking shops. Stayed Sunday to Tuesday and although not empty it was by no means full either - very peaceful. The tent field is nice and flat and sheltered - wouldn't want to pitch right next to the road however as it can get busy. The showers are hot and powerful but what a nightmare with the money box being outside the cubicle, you get 4 mins for 20p but it starts the second you put the money in - then you have to get into your cubicle and strip ! The site also has a TV room with pool table and some fruit machines. I would go again - although it is not the cheapest site I've been too !

Nicely placed next to Hawkshead Village, four pubs and a Late Shop COOP. Good camping ground, friendly staff. Just two downers, the showers.
Downer no.1 Coin operated 20p for 4 minutes, the machines altogether on wall outside one of the cubicles. There is a fold down chair behind the door on the wall in the cubical for clothes etc. You have 2 choices. You put your money in the 20p slot and waste hot water time rushing back to your cubical, get undressed and put your stuff on the fold down chair, or you undress, hang your stuff on the back of the door don't use the fold down chair (because you have to fold it up to get out of the door) rush to the coin machine in your towel, and rush back because the water comes on as soon as your 20p is put into the 20p slot.
Downer no. 2 I went in the shower block to use the shower and loo at different times over the weekend and the floors were always dirty with grass and mud, including the shower cubicles, and there was no mop and bucket to use to clean the shower floor before you used it.

We visited during Spring bank Holiday, and the camping field was very busy. We have a fairly big tent, and we had to circle the field twice before deciding to pitch in an area which left 2 other tents less than 1.5 Metres away. Needless to say, this wasn't the most private pitch or the most quiet! The location is excellent, close to Windemere and Ambleside. The campsite is very close to Hawkshead village, which has among other things 4 pubs, a village store, newsagents and tea shops. If I had to gripe about anything, it would be that the tent field was extremely busy. There wasn't a playing field so the kids were playing football and cricket near to tents and the cars (Something I personally don't like but others may not mind) and also the showers and sockets in the loo blocks were 20p a shot for 4 minutes. This is a bit on the mean side, and most days I needed to use 2 tokens to get a shower and dry hair etc. I would expect that for the nightly rates, which were on the high side, these facilities could have been included free of charge. Overall, these gripes were minor. The staff were helpful and courteous, and the location was superb. I have no doubts that we'll be returning again.

I have been going to Croft for many years and in all that time l have found it to be of the highest standard, we always have a tent and an electric hook up with no problems at all, l recomend this site to any one as a great base for visiting the Lake District.
NOTE: Hawkshead is one of my favorite places in the Lakes, it's small quaint streets house lots of interesting shops, and some lovely pubs with great food, only a few miles away is Ambleside one way and Grizedale Forest the other...don't hesitate try it!

July 2005 Love this site always have always will stayed here since I was a child and all I can say is it is fab.
site is very busy in the summer and the camping field can be a lil cramped, but pitches are flat toilets clean and have never had to wait to use showers etc so really isnt to bad. tho would advice pre booking in summer as campsite ALWAYS gets full real quick.
CANT GET A BETTER LOCATION! right in village full of fab little shops (great bookshop) and great pubs the kings being the best, tho the sun inn is nice to does lovely breakfasts.
Central for Ambleside, Grizedale Forest (great sculpture trail for kids and adults alike) also tarn hows and coniston just a ten min drive or a fab walk across fields and hills
Negative points: gets TOO busy in summer no playground on site 20p showers that only last for 4 mins and have box outside (why?) sitting here trying to thing of more bad points and cant.
All in all a fab campsite which is in a great place and always remember..location location location!

July 2005 This was a very pleasant and enjoyable site. Fantastically close to hawkshead which has everything you will need - post office, pharmacy, co-op souvenirs, local pubs etc - so the lack of shop on site didnt matter. Also a milkman came round at 10am every morning with everything you could need, including bread, eggs, bacon etc.
The site is very convenient for Ambleside and Coniston and good road links (well as good as the lake district can be). There was a lovely little stream that ran along the bottom of the site which proved handy for paddling in as the weather was scorching hot.
The facilities are clean and adequate - the site was full but never had to queue for the loo or a shower. The staff are friendly and helpful.
Only downsides are as previously said - 20p meter for the shower is outside the cubicle which means you have to get ready slip out and run back in.
The site is on the main hawkshead road and although it was safe enough (i.e. fences etc)it proved to be a bit noisy with tractors - however this didnt bother us too much. the only other noise was the nesting crows in the trees surrounding which when disturbed at 3 in the morning I could have shot he he he
I would highly recommend this site to anyone looking for a great base for ambleside and Coniston, we will no doubt be returning. Booking is advisable as the site fills up quickly.

June 2005 Just spent 3 nights on The Croft campsite and have to say it was thoroughly enjoyable. Probably the best amenities block we have ever used, apart from the coin meters being outside of the showers, but they were spotlessly clean and had lots of hot water. We arrived early on Monday and found a great spot on the field, but it had filled up by the time we came away today.
The church clock didn't bother us at all, infact the birds in the surrounding trees were noisier than the clock. Hawkshead is a lovely little village and very nicely situated to visit the lakes. We visited Ambleside, Windermere, Barrow and Walney Island whilst we were there. Highly recommended site.

June 2005 Just came back from cumbria and couldn't have found a nicer site and nicer people running it, Had space to park car beside tent and even when campsite was signed as full there was still plenty of space around tents, Lovely views and a great starting point for walks.
Weekends got busy but during the week it emptied out again. Facilitys all v clean and showers lovely and hot for 20p. would think about returning to this site in the near future.
