May 2004 This is a very peaceful ( It was when we were there ! ) , and relaxing site with great amenities ( Good , clean shower block , cleaning areas etc ) , Hawkshead is perfect for mooching around , looking at the gifts on offer to bewildered tourists , having a pint in the pub in the main centre , the Co-op is very well stocked ( Ice Cubes , Gazebo etc ) , die hards will know what I mean. This was a cheap and cheerful site and we will be returning v. soon. There were no bad points at all , but I can imagine it being VERY busy in the Summer months , but that's what the Lake District is like.

July 2004 I was going to spend one night at this site as an overnight backpacking stop but was so impressed by the site that I made it a weeks stay and used it as a central base for all of my walking trips. The toilet block was clean and well equipped and the nearness of the shops and pubs was a real bonus. I even got a slight reduction because there was only me in the tent and the usual fee is for a tent and two people.

August 2004 Hawkshead is a superb quiet little village with excellent pubs. There are plenty of good walks nearby as well as top class mountain biking. Showers and toilets good and clean but the ground was very marshy - ah well it is the lakes! Site was very pricey, easily the most expensive campsite I've ever been on - you pay for the location, and you'd better have your lights off by 11 because the owners are authoritarian about this rule - fine if you need to be up very early, not good if you are meeting friends who you havn't seen in a while and have a lot to talk about.

September 2004 We have just spent 4 nights on this camp site and it was excellent. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly. The facilities were excellent and although the 20p meters for the showers are outside the cubicle, this isn't necessarily a problem because if you have an idea how long it takes you to shower you can put in enough 20p pieces to cover that time rather than just putting 1 x 20p in and then trying to rush your shower before the 4 minutes is up (I know I usually take a good 10 mins in the shower so I just put 60p in the meter so it would last 12 minutes and I had no problems !!!). The village is lovely and has a good choice of pubs and 'eateries'. We didnt try the QUEENS HEAD pub simply because their meals appeared rather expensive compared to the others but they do seem to have good recommendations. We found Ambleside to have the best shopping although we only went once because we didn't have a car and the cost of buses and taxi's is quite expensive. I would recommend getting a rambler ticket if you are planning trips by bus into Windermere, Ambleside, Coniston etc. rather than paying for individual journeys. Again though, I do highly recommend this camp site and the facilities are all well maintained.

September 2004 Have just returned from a long weekend break at this site. Unfortunately it rained all the time we were there and the site had begun to be a little bit boggy. Although in a tent we chose the electric hook up option (being based in the touring caravan side), some of the pitches were a little worn, but we did manage to get a level and less wet pitch.
For:- close proximity to Hawkshead village and The Sun Inn (excellent meals, but get there early at weekends because gets full quick)
Against:- A little expensive for what was on offer, compared to other sites we have stayed on.

June 2004 I'd prebooked for me and my young son but I had to squeeze my tiny two person tent in between the guy ropes of others. The 11 o'clock noise curfew is vehemently adhered to: which, considering the volume and proximity of other campers led to neither an inviting or relaxing stay.
Toilets were good: the pitches flat. Nothing for kids to do apart from play ball and ride bikes in a high density camping area.
We bailed out a day early and went to Blackpool. The traffic jam on the motorway was a preferable alternative to another night there.

July 2004 Arrived to find our electrics not working, and within the next 2 hours our car had disabled itself (Long Story) so basically a nightmare start. Site office workers very very helpful and without their support we may have just packed up and gone home.
First two days heavy rain and the ground on the EHU side seemed to struggle to drain. Toilets always clean and the showers are not showers they are massagers ..... the water pressure is out of this world. Hawkshead really beautiful, will be coming back to this site.

July 2004 Just come back from spending 6 nights at this site. First impressions were good. The staff were very friendly and would always go out of their way to help. The camp field itself was nice and flat. The site has a ‘pitch anywhere’ policy, so if you get there early you have the pick of the field. The site itself is just across the road from Hawkshed village, the merits of which have already been mentioned in the other reviews.
Regarding the facilities, there is no on-site shop to speak of, but the Co-Op in the village offers anything you could need. They do offer freezing facilities for ice packs at 10p per block. There are hot and cold vending machines, a TV room, laundry, washing-up facilities and the usual shower, wash, toilet blocks.
Washing-up water is hot and free. Situated within this block are the only 2 (I think) freshwater taps, so if you’re camped at the far end of the field obtaining water is a bit of a trek.
The showers are 20p for about 4 mins. The things to note when taking a shower are that the meters are outside of the cubicles, the time starts from when you put your money in (not when you turn the shower on), and that you cant open the shower door properly when the seat is down. The trick is to strip, hang your clothes up, and whip the money in.
Hot water for washing is free; there are power points for shavers, and mains sockets (at 20p).
The site allows barbeques, but no open fires. The ‘no noise’ policy was adhered to but I would suggest camping away form the fence which backs onto the static caravans.
My impressions of the site are:
For:
• Flat pitches • Very handy for Hawkshead and the surrounding area (Ambleside, Bowness etc) • Friendly, helpful staff • Good, clean washing facilities • Tents can be pitched anywhere on the field, and cars can be parked along side.
Against:
• The shower set-up is not ideal. • Expensive (£14.50 per night). • Only one drinking water point.
Overall I would strongly recommend this site. We booked an additional 2 nights because we were enjoying it that much!!.
I noticed the ‘site full’ sign went up over the weekend, so booking is advisable. I would definitely go back again. For those who wish to explore the Lakes either on foot, or by car, this site is the ideal location.

March 2004 We have just had a long weekend on this site in our tent. The site only opened for the season last week and looks slightly rough around the edges. The camping field is flat but could do with being rolled as it was slightly lumpy - not too bad though. Toilet blocks were clean. Showers were 20p for 4 minutes. The only down side is that the money box for the shower is outside the cubicle so if your money runs out you have to come out of the cubicle to put more money in!! The showers were steaming hot though and very nice. Pot washing facilities are under cover but outside and we may have seen a big rat run down one of the drains that had got a cracked cover on it!
The village clock is quite loud and chimes every 15 minutes, so a visit to the 4 pubs in the village beforehand will help you sleep better. The sun inn does lovely meals and most of the pubs seemed to welcome dogs, even in the eating areas. Overall a very good site, I would think it gets very busy in the summer and the camping field is not that big so I would book before you go.
