Just come back from spending two weeks under the canopy of this Beddgelert Forest. The weather was very welsh and it rained a lot. The forest seemed to have a microclimate all of its own and it rained there when everywhere else was glorious sun. This led to a very wet and often noisy experience but we all still loved it.
We pitched in a quiet area and had a massive amount of space, the dogs loved it.
The train was a big hit with my 3 year old. The dogs enjoyed the walks in the forests behind the rail track.
I was a little concerned that two weeks in the same area may become a little stale but it definitely didn’t we found something different to do every day.
The facilities were fine and were cleaned regularly. The light in the shower block was a bit annoying as it was on a movement sensor near the door, this meant showering mainly in the dark but the light turning on as you left.
Overall we loved it.

Just returned from a seven night stay. The site is in a great location in Snowdonia, but this obviously comes with its problems due to the weather.
Despite it being August the site was very wet. The ground never really dried out as even when it did stop raining most of the site is under the tree's. (It is a forest holiday so you would expect this!) The wardens are very helpful and the site on the whole was great.
The negative points about this site are 1. The Mosquitoes, 2. The shower block was a little tired and did seem dirty at points.
The positives 1. The location 2. The steam train that runs through the site 3. The scenery. 4. The staff, 4. Lynn's cafe in Beddgelert.

Beddgelert is a lovely looking forest site with 2 rivers running through it as well as a charming narrow gauge steam railway. The nearby village of Beddgelert is very pretty, with an exceptional ice cream shop and good food available in pubs.
We very much enjoyed visiting Gelerts Grave, Caernarvon Castle, Portmeirrion, Penrrhyn Castle, Corris Craft Centre and climbing Snowdon, while we were in Wales.
The staff in the shop at the camp site are extremely friendly and helpful, with their policy of putting themselves in the customers shoes. However if you want a large, flat, grass pitch for a tent you will be disappointed.
There are no actual pitches, you just turn up and look round and hope you can find a spot big and flat enough. There are very few tent pitches with electrical hookups.
We have a large tent and wanted electricity so we paid a little extra and used one of the hardstanding campervan/ caravan pitches. This was flat but very stony and under trees, so damp.
The staff very helpfully provided us with extra groundsheet so our tent wasn't ripped to pieces by the slate. We found we were staying out late so we didn't have to go back to the campsite in the afternoon because there was nowhere to sit outside the tent and watch the kids play etc.
The site has a small playground aimed at younger children but nowhere to play cricket or football for example. The bins were not emptied very often and there was a smell of rotting rubbish for a day or two near the shower block on our part of the site.
The facilities themselves were dated and I have seen a lot better. The temperature of the water in the showers was not adjustable and was too hot for small children early in the morning but soon ran out and was stone cold by 8. 30AM.
The larger facilities in the centre of the site were locked with a keypad and there always seemed to be small children outside desperate for a wee, waiting for someone to leave so they could get in. We had a nice (though wet) holiday in Wales but we wouldn't go back to this site.

Just arrived back from a spur of the moment weekend stay in this charming campsite (we only live 20 miles away and wanted to kick off the summer hols). We are a family of 6, 4 kids aged 15, 8, 7 and 4 and we stayed in a tent.
From arrival the staff were really friendly and helpful. There is a small shop on site, some things were overpriced, some reasonably priced.
They had a facility to order fresh bread, bacon or sausage baps for the morning, jacket spuds and pizza at night.
I found the toilets and shower block clean - they are there to be practical, not refurbished to the standard some people would expect their own bathrooms to be. At the end of the day, they're communal bathrooms, and I've seen a lot worse, and a lot more old fashioned! A short sighted male member of our party did have a problem accessing the toilets, the doorway to the mens toilets was very dark.
We pitched in the field opposite the park, word to the wise, the noise of the beautiful stream running across the road does become amplified in the silence of the night. If, like me, the sound of water sends you to sleep, you'll be fine.
As posted before, the midges were ferocious from about 7. 30 until 10pm. We kept them at bay with citronella candles and smoke from the barbecue.
We went to Beddgelert, which is pretty as a picture, and took the kids to Caernarfon Castle, where the Tardis had managed to wedge itself for a few days.
Would definitely, definitely go back, had a lovely, relaxing short break.

Just back ! Good trip site wonderful staff helpful but overworked
But must agree with earlier reviewer about access code for toilets its a 6 figure code like c1234x, its in a dark hallway your towel & sponge bag in one hand & then you have to turn the knob, self defeating as people inside hear you struggling & let you in (whether you've paid for that site or not ). Lots of very large tents size of the Albert Hall ( their money's as good as mine )
You must pay for electric whether you want it or not & now half the pitches have picnic tables, when they're the only pitches left you have to pay an extra 4 quid a night for one of those
But the forest is massive & a forest will I go back yes of course !

We have just spent 8 nights here, we arrived when the office was busy, we were given a map, and told to pitch where we liked in the allotted caravan area. We had expected the pitches would at least be in clearings and be a bit further apart, so it was dark to say the least, it only rained once in the week which was at night, but it seamed to rain all night with the constant dripping from the trees. The toilets had been refurbished and looked new, which were locked with a key pad there wasn’t enough light to see the numbers even during the day I took a torch, the showers which were separate and were not locked (only 3 in the block we were closest to) you stepped back into the 70ies pine clad even the ceiling, which dripped constantly, as the extractor fan wasn’t enough to clear the room of steam even with the windows left open, the light was on a timer so you ended up in the dark after about 5 minutes, no mirror or hair dryer you had to go back to the toilets to use those.
The village of Beddgelert has a lot to offer, a good stocked shop, and quite a few pubs, hotels a pizza restaurant and fish & chip shop, also free car park. The nearest petrol station about 7 in Porthmadog. The area is great for walking and the scenery once out of the site in breathtaking. Would we go back no, other Forest Holiday sites are a lot better.

This is my 5th visit to Beddgelert and some years since my last visit, and I was not disappointed.
The site is as good as ever, the staff were extremely helpful and approachable, always had the local weather, and the mountain weather at hand for hikers and casual tourists alike.
Each day we could order in fresh breads for breakfast and have pizza and burgers for dinner, all freshly cooked to order on site. They served fresh coffees as well all at a reasonable price.
We felt happy knowing we could let the kids off the leash for a while.
There is a good well equipped play ground for the children and a wild life exploring room with lots of local information about the flora and fauna to be found in the forest.
The added attraction of the recently reopened Welsh Highland Railway station made the site perfect.
The toilets and showers are basic, but clean, there is a laundry and washing up room and the site was overall well cared for.
Gas and basic camping supplies were also available on site.
Only downside is the midges and the lack of milk on a daily basis in the shop, but perfect site otherwise.
Will we go back? you bet we will. We just had the best holiday and camping experience ever.

Have just returned from a weekend break, arriving Friday lunchtime, we were advised it was going to be a full weekend, and that we had arrived at the right time to find somewhere.
Booking in was fairly straight forward, if not a bit slow, we were given a map, and told to find a suitable pitch, within the areas she advised.
With map in hand off we drove, needless to say we were a little disappointed with what we saw before us.
Pitches were not number marked, so in essence you could pitch anywhere, keeping approx 3M from the next tent, although they do advise the pitch sizes are 5M x 8M, sadly though we were unable to find a pitch that was flat enough to accommodate our tent which is 7. 5M x 3M, on the grass area. We thought we had found a reasonable spot, but upon inspection we would have all ended up at one end, the slope was that severe.
We drove round a bit more, and eventually ended up down a small lane, which we believe was hardstanding for a caravan, this was the only place available that was flat, and would take our tent. Tent erected, and rock pegs secured, we pitched, we were under trees which suited us, and also by the stream which ran through the site.
The kids loved the stream, crystal clear, and was a used as a short cut to the facilities.
Toilet block was huge, access was key coded, but 9 times out of 10, someone was coming out so it wasn't used. There were 8 toilets, 5 showers, and 6 personal sinks with doors, 2 dodgy hand dryers, which in all honesty you could blow warmer.
There were queues for the showers, and and although a mop and bucket to mop up excess water, don't think anybody did this. One thing which was odd, if you had used the loo, but all the sinks were in use, there was no additional sinks to wash your hands, an oversight maybe for when the site is busy in the mornings.
Washing up facilities were clean, on average 6 sinks, 2 dryers @1. 50 and 2 washing machines, plus 12 heated dryers. Water was always piping hot, taps however were the type you had to push down to get water out, and seemed like an eternity to fill the sink.
Toilets were a bit hit and miss with the flushing. Although several pumps of the handle seemed to do the trick.
In the reception area, you could order pizza, coffee, jacket potatoes, and bread for either later that day, or the following morning, needless to say we didn't bother, over £4. 00 for a jacket spud and butter could work out a bit pricey for a family.
The site had limited lighting, and is mainly non EHU for tents. We did find the EHU section, but this only accommodates 5, so you would have to be very lucky to get one of those, that said, you were very close to the neighbours.
There was a narrow gauge railway that ran past the site, you could get on and off at the site, if you told the conductor when getting on at a station.
As mentioned on previous threads, there were millions of midges, despite having the citronella candles going, and spraying ourselves in midge repellent, the little blighters got through and bit us all to death. On the brighter side. There were no mobile phone signals, for either orange, vodaphone, or tesco, or any other network operator. Bliss.
The surrounding area is beautiful, we found a lake which the kids took the dinghy on for a couple of hours. A peaceful and tranquil break, we will return, but maybe with a smaller tent, so we can pitch on the grass.

Just returned from a fantastic weekend at this lovely site. Arrived to a very warm welcome. Had previously booked and paid online which was very easy to follow.
We did a quick tour of the site and picked a nice spot under the trees (not too difficult as it is a forest site).
The Steam train runs through the site about 3 times a day which was nice to see.
The trails around the forest were great on our mountain bikes but would also be great for walking too.
Toilets and showers were always spotlessly clean. The showers were actually the most powerful I have ever experienced! Will definitely be back with the kids and the dog.
Make sure you take your Insect repellent as the midgies are relentless!

I knew it would be dark, but I wasn't prepared for exactly how dark! What were once clearings, now have a tree canopy over them. We were on a pitch by the railway which was cold, damp and dark. The rain fell from a great height, from the canopy overhead and sounded like marbles on top of the roof. You couldn't hear yourself think, let alone try to sleep. I'm aware that this is a forest, but the canopy should be trimmed back over the hard pitches just to let some light and a bit of warmth in. I needed the lights on in the caravan to cook and see into the cupboards, etc most of the day. The other really bad point was that no light and lots of rain led to gazillions of midges, so take some repellent with you.
The facilities were good at this end of the site, good hot showers and cleaned once a day.
It would have been lovely with a bit of light, but you couldn't even tell what the weather was like until you left the campsite. The only mobile signal we found was on the main road by the entrance.
I think this site would be lovely in the spring, when the bluebells are out and the leaves aren't thick on the trees. Or from September onwards when they fall. I note most of the other reviewers that did have a good time were staying at these times.
Didn't work for us, we left a day early and just went home.
