Max and Paddy's First Van Adventure to Wales!

Having previously stayed at Cae Du Campsite down the road on many occasions we noted that Cae Du had closed for the season by the end of October so we discovered this Forest Holidays site tucked away in the trees going out of Beddgelert in the opposite direction.

The site was very clean including the showers and toilets and electric hookups worked well - when we eventually figured out how to get the electrics in the new 'van working - well it was our first time away without the tent!

The site has good yet basic facilities but Beddgelert village is just a short walk away.  The sites location makes it great for going walking.

We'll be going back here again so it must have been good.

Just a quick point to the powers that be - when a customer has travelled to the site it is customary to greet them with a smile and some warmth.  The gentleman that checked us in to the site almost put me off what is otherwise an excellent site.

Stayed for one night, very reasonably priced and toilets and showers very modern and included in price. Washing up facilities very good. There was a shop and childrens' playground as well but we didn't use them.

Situated in the middle of the forest and pitches are quite well spread out amongst the trees, not regimented with 2 foot to the next one like some sites.

One member of staff was quite rude but all the others were very welcoming and I suppose we all have off days!

Plenty of walks throughout the forest on signed paths. Quiet site for being quite large. Take a torch though as lights at night are limited.

As said before this is a very well run campsite with a no nonsense attitude.  Everything quietens down by ten pm and the wardens do patrol to make sure everything is OK.  This gives a nice secure safe feel to the place.  Facilities are clean and plentiful with washers and dryers available.  The only thing I would say is take some rock pegs if camping as ground has slate under it.

A really lovely site - good facilities and delightful location in the forest with 2 rivers bordering the site. Felt safe for younger children. Even despite the rain we had a lovely time. One particular member of staff (deputy manager perhaps?) very pleasant and helpful throughout our stay.

However - a word of warning. We booked through the central booking agency for Forest Holidays and were assured that the pitch booked was suitable for our needs, as each one was 6mx6m. When in fact we were almost turned away as there was no pitch big enough (just found one we could squeeze on to. I was told that I could book 2 pitches next to each other but would have to book both with EHU (only one needed), in fact pitches are given on a first-come-first-served basis so we paid for EHU and were camped together only because I requested that the other half of our party use a 'space' at the rear of our tent. The manager was totally unsympathetic and said he "only had my word for it" that we had been given poor information over the phone. When I challenged his attitude I was threatened with eviction. The manager did eventually 'mellow out' and help us by us a finding us a pitch - however a stressful experience - this was first time camping too.

I agree with most of the previous comments - however - all was not perfect on our visit.  We chose the site because of our highly successful visits to other forestry run sites.

Reception and book in was smooth. Friendly staff were quite helpful when asked. The setting for the site is wonderful - at the base of a mountain, in a small wood with streams running through it.  Nearby Beddgelert is small and beautiful with a few pubs, cafes and shops.   This is a great base for walking, climbing etc.  The premium pitches with EHU looked great. Wish we'd paid for this! Caravans and motorhomes would find  this a fantastic site.

On the recommendation of the staff and previous reviews we pitched by the bend in the stream.  The kids loved this but so did everyone else.  The site was very busy and we had a constant stream of people and dogs surrounding us.  The other impact of the busy site was that there were few pitches to choose from.  We arrived mid week and had a little choice.  Those arriving for the weekend were crammed in anywhere.  The site boasts a rule about 6m gaps between tents - we were surrounded by others no more than 6 feet away. Returning to the site after a day's walking became a highly amusing turf-war.Other less naive campers ended up marking out territory with washing lines and windbreakers etc to protect car parking spaces!  The ground was ok but  rocky in parts.  There were some great pitches for smaller tents but if you have a family tent you will be lucky to find a flat spot (outside the EHU pitches).   The toilets and showers were pretty good but not as good as other forestry sites we have stayed at.

To repeat some of the dangers reported by others - midges - there were plenty of them. We also got swarmed by flying ants!  There was also another break-in when we were there.   Signs warn about squirrels damaging tents to get at food so you are advised not to leave anything in your tent.

There is a small playground for the kids but not much other space and ours spent most of the time in the stream.  As others have said the 11pm rule does seem to work and the site was quiet by 11:30 at the latest.

In summary - location is beautiful but beware the busy periods when larger tents will have limited choice and space.  If we go back we will definitely go for an EHU pitch even though we don't need it.  Great for dog lovers and short stays.  Even without the above hazards and allowing for the August rush, we've stayed in much, much better places for the same price.

The Beddgelert Forest Holidays experience was a good one you can pitch basically were u want so  we pitched right next to the river which was noisy at night, but great to get up to in the morning. The showers blocks and toilet blocks were clean and enough for everyone & facilities to wash clothes and pots were there to use when u wanted, there is a common room which is heated and a play area for childern. The site manager was very friendly and  the other staff, the main rules of the camp was NO noise after 11pm and no fires. Its a very quiet campsite so if your a party animal beware.we felt very much at home here and will be returning. :-) go4it

The setting is fabulous, just outside Beddgelert, with wonderful views of the mountains. The welcome we received when we arrived was great, but there it all ended. We had difficulty locating where we were supposed to pitch our tent, when we did find it we were surprised to see that the premier tent pitches were right opposite the waste disposal for the motor homes and also the skips for the rubbish.

The site ground is very hard and it took us a long time to find a spot of ground that we could get pegs into, when we had finally finished and had the tent up and tea underway, a member of the staff turned up on a quad bike and told us in no uncertain terms that we had to move our tent now, I tried to explain that it had taken us ages to erect it due to the hardness of the ground and that I was also in the middle of cooking tea for our one year old son. But no we had to move it right there and then as it was a fire hazard.

The facilities are not great, there seems to be a problem with the water pressure and there is no dry space in the showers so you end up putting your clothes on in a puddle (my advice, take a large towel and go into one of the wash rooms to get dressed). The toilets were barely clean and most of the loo seat were not attached properly. However there are electric point on the wall for plugging in hair dryers and straighteners etc. And there is a hairdryer there and this works very well.

We found this to be an excellent site. Facilities were good and the situation beautiful. Some pitches have EHUs, for both tents and vans

The children's play area was small, but much enjoyed, it could get a little noisy at night, but by 10, things calmed down.

This is not a 'party' site. The manager told me that he gives noisy campers one warning and they are then evicted.

The setting is stunning, with easy access to walks. There is a small stream running through the site, which my children found great fun, but could be a risk if you have very small children. Beddgelert has several nice pubs, and places to eat.

Previous posters have mentioned the midges; they are not kidding. There are lots of them and they are near impossible to avoid. But don't let them put you off, this is a wonderful site and my children are already begging to go back.

I returned to this site for another week's walking in Snowdonia on the Saturday of the Easter weekend, this time bringing a couple of friends along as well.

We arrived just before midday on the Saturday and found that the campsite was fairly busy. We managed to find some space in a quiet field towards the bottom of the campsite. Although the site filled up steadily over the day it never became too overcrowded. There were a lot more families on the site than in February, but it wasn't too noisy and the site was quiet by about 11pm.

A separate toilet block was open over the Easter weekend which meant there were plenty of facilities to go round. They seemed to be having some trouble with the water pressure whilst we were there which meant that the showers could be too hot, too cold, really forceful or just a dribble within the space of about 5 minutes! I guess this was just a temporary problem as I didn't notice it when I came in February.

By the Sunday evening most of the campsite was empty again and it got steadily quieter as the week went on. A few school parties came and went but they all seemed quite well behaved and tended to pitch on the area in front of the adventure playground.

We walked down into Beddgelert most evenings and had food at Lyn's Cafe, the Tanronnen Inn and the Glandwr Cafe. The food was best at the Tanronnen Inn although it got quite busy at times and stopped serving at about 8.30pm. We also visited the Prince Llywelyn Hotel and Saracen's Head Hotel for some beers and found them both very welcoming. Beddgelert was a bit livelier then when I came in February and there were a few more shops etc open this time round.

Once again I was impressed with the campsite and was surprised at how it managed to maintain its calm and tranquil feel - it wasn't much different from when I visited in February.

Stayed at this site over the half-term holiday so that I could do some walking in the Snowdonia area. It is in an excellent location for walkers, being at the foot of Snowdon, and there are plenty of other walks that can be started from the campsite.

The site is situated in the Beddgelert Forest and was really peaceful and tranquil. It is about a 10 minute walk down the road into Beddgelert where there are a couple of shops and a few pubs and restaurants. Porthmadog, Caernarfon and Llanberis are not too far away and have a bit more on offer.

The campsite was really quiet for the whole week and there seemed to be plenty of space for campers. The pitches were set out on hardstandings of loose pebbles which meant that it wasn't too muddy and didn't feel too crowded. It would be sensible to bring a mallet with you, however, to make sure your pegs stay in. There was a little shop on site which was reasonably well stocked and the staff seemed really friendly. They were able to offer advice about the different walks in the area and their local knowledge was really useful. There was a small adventure playground on site and an area where kids could kick a ball around. There was also a common room, but this was closed during my visit.

The site had a large toilet/shower block and also a seperate set of toilet blocks, although these were closed during my visit, presumably because it was so quiet. The toilet/shower block was clean and tidy and well thought out. It had about 6 showers and also about 10 cublicles with sinks in for if you just needed a quick wash. There was also a soap dispenser and hand drier which I thought was a good ideas as you didn't have to take a soap and towel with you if you were just going to the toilet. There was always plenty of hot water and the block was kept quite warm, despite it being freezing outside! Next to the toilets/showers was a seperate room for washing pots with about eight sinks in it. Next to that was a laundry room with sinks and driers. Overall I was very impressed with this campsite and look forward to going there again.
