Had a fantastic 3 night stay at this great site. Site wash room facilities were spotless, showers were great - plenty of high powered hot water to warm you up. Plenty of hard standing pitches with electrical hook up, and plenty of choice at this time fo year. Small park for the kids. Dog friendly site - we had our 3 retrievers with us and they loved it there. Welsh Highland railway goes right past the site and the site even has it's own station where you can flag down the steam locos heading for Canaervon or Porthmadoc. Plenty of walks directly from the site into Beddgelert Forest or up into the Snowdonian Mountains. Beddgelert only a mile walk away and site ideally placed for visiting Snowdonia and the Llyn Peninsular. Highly recommended and will definitely visit again.

We thoroughly enjoyed 4 nights at Beddgelert in this Forestry Commission run site. It has so many things that are practically unique:

1) a steam train that passes your home at 11.00am and approx 5.00pm, with a happy driver always ready to wave at the campers
2) a very well-stocked shop with great staff, full of advice and good humour
3) being within walking distance of Beddgelert, a beautiful village and also the Watkins Path up Snowdon
4) clean facilities no matter what the time, day or night.

There is a small children's' play area and ample room for them to roam, without too many oppressive rules. We are travelling in a very large RV towing a car and yet found our pitch easy to negotiate and park in.

There is a drive over motorhome service point, plentiful water and cheap laundry. OK, there is no phone signal or internet unless you are on Orange but one of the hotels in Beddgelert has free WiFi.

There is also an excellent and affordable Italian restaurant in town, with beautiful walks all around. The facilities were immaculate throughout our stay and the laundry very reasonable. For those cold and blustery Snowdonia days there is an indoor area with vending machines for hot drinks outside.

We felt relaxed, un-hassled and relatively rule free throughout. Highly recommended, though the roads around are narrow for a 30 foot RV towing a car!

Fantastic site. No signal on the phone! LOVED IT! We had been absolutley drenched for days on end with driving rain, all week, and we had started in Oxford, worked out way to Bristol, Talgarth, Rhayader, Doglleau, Moelfre on Anglesey, down to Caernarfon, to Aber, to Swansea, back to Bristol then Oxford, so quite a tour!

Anyway on to the site. After being turned down by TWO sites, one situated in a house just off Caernarfon town centre (anyone in the know please give me a name), and also a rather large one, on the way to this one, on the grounds my unit was 'unsafe'.(no idea what they'd been smoking)

Beddgelert campsite accepted my Short Wheel Base Land Rover Series III with fold out bed with a smile, and we were free to choose any pitch we wanted, so we opted for the gorgeous river field!

Absolutley stunning views, and brilliant facilities, the tumble dryers were cheap and actually dried our clothes! Unfortunately we were once again drenched packing away the next morning.

Recommend this site fully, I'd describe it as a well facilitated campsite, with none of the rubbish that's normally acquired by having facilities! (Allocated Pitches, little roads going to each spot, a silly little bar or clubhouse, you know the drill).

WHAT A SHAME about the facility blocks. They really do let the site down! They need a lot of TLC and it would have been nice to have HOT water instead of, at best, tepidwater. The bigger block was the worst and had what looked liked black mildew in the showers. If you can live with the above read on.

Spent 3 nights here in the pouring rain. But that didn't stop us having a nice stay. The site is lovely set under trees and near to streams. It is worth thinking about this if you like the sun (if it ever shows its face!)as you are most likely to be under shade all day. It was great fun to watch the steam train chuff on by!

There is a lovely footpath which goes most of the way to the village but the last 5 mins or so is on the main road. However the road was not that busy when we were there. I believe there is another footpath that goes all the way but we were advised it would be very very muddy.

The village is a great starting off point for walks along the river or up into the hills.

One final point - £2.50 extra for a grotty picnic table usually shoved to the edge of the pitch

Just returned from five days in a large Vango tent at this site.

Larger tents need to pay a supplement which is fine, except that arriving on a busy summer Tuesday we were unable to find a decent place to pitch; in the end we found a sufficient one but with serious slope under the bedrooms that made things a little uncomfortable. Some groups seemed to have pitched in a way that fully occupied larger areas and that needs to be addressed- it means substantially fewer units than capacity can actually find anywhere to stay. An example is the nice flat area (beware of the river behind though) by the entrance where only a few tents had managed to occupy the whole area by pitching a few metres from the fence pointing in to the centre, and leaving football goals etc in the remaining spaces.

However, if people arrived on a Thursday they would have no issues finding a pitch.

The character of this site changes dramatically from weekday to weekend: during the week it was a peaceful, family oriented site with quiet times etc adhered to. On the friday a few groups of teens and young people arrived who were quite noisy to have pitched next to you, and there was even one group lighting open fires unchallenged despite clear rules not to do so due to the forest nature of the site.

It's worth being aware that this is a forest site and as such that means a real midge issue (bring your own repellant; only shop stuff contains DEET whcih isn't suitable for under 6's,) and it can be very, very damp.

The facilities were of excellent quality: amongst the best and cleanest we have ever seen, certainly best of any Forest Holidays site. Be aware when selecting a pitch that many people seem to choose to hang around by the block which can be a nuisance at 6am, but it is possibly the only area suitable for littlie's trikes etc. Hugely recommend the pains au chocolat available- you have to order the afternoon before but they arrive warm and delicious at 9am next morning.

Recommend the ice creams and pizzas in the nearby village of Beddgelert, but be aware that cash is only available from the post office there- no cashpoint. Pizza place takes card though (pizza also available on site but hey, this is North Wales, it rains, you will want somewhere to go!). Porthmadog has a Tesco, as well as a few good takeaways (the fish and chip shop in Beddgelert not recommended), Caernarvon has more and a fantastic castle to visit; also the children enjoyed the walk along the Victorian Pier in bangor, but don't do as we did and book the Snowdon train in anvance as it's a lot of money just to see mist! Get tickets on the day, and Llanberis at the foot of Snowdonia is not to be missed. We didn;t get there but a local tells me that Cricht has a tiny village at the foot which has a little outdoor pool that fills from a stream and is also worth a walk.

We will return to the area and certainly buy 3 day passes for the West Highland Railways but I don't think we will return to this site; our seven year old disappeared out the fire door of the toilet block and was found standing on a rock in the unfenced river (which soon turns to white water when the rain hits the mountains, as it had done that day). As such, we resolved that if it was for adults or older children this is a great site, but for small children the river prevents that being so. Our seven year old has special needs so we will camp at another site from now on, with some measure of sadness.

We stayed a couple of nights here at the start of August. We arrived in the Welsh rain and parked up and went to reception. The process as a little slow, maybe new people or new computers but no real worries. We were given a map and pointed out whereabouts to go and it was a pick your own pitch. This bit is good as everyone has different ideas of what they want.

We found a nice pitch, EHU was within easy reach. We stayed in the forest bit, it was quite gloomy and the weather didn't help. It is a forest though so you would expect some trees! The tent pitches without EHU looked a lot more open in the non forest areas.

They have a nice drive over motorhome service point which was great.

I wasn't overly impressed with the toilet block in our area. The gents toilets and showers just look dated and tired now and could do with updating. I have stayed on a few C&CC sites recently so maybe have got used to higher standards.

The water was always hot and at 11:30 the cleaners were out for 1 hour sorting out the block.

We were given an order form for breakfasts if required and evening pizza.

The main reason we went was for Snowdon, we drive left out of the site for a few miles to Rhyd Ddu trainstation and parked all day for £4. The path was great and no problems finding our way.

The other day we just walked down the road into Beddgelert, had a walk around, drink in 1 of the pubs, icecreams from the large selection of flavours and just a little shopping in the National Trust shop.

All in all a good trip but like I mentioned before the washblock(s) could do with a bit of a refurb - especially for £20 a night.

We picked this site after reading the reviews of other campers. We were 2 families, one trailer tent and one 6 berth tent. We prebooked for 4 nights and were asked to pay in full as our last night was the Thursday before the bank holiday (which was classed as part of the BH). Upon booking I asked for 2 pitches together but was told that we couldn't reserve pitches but on the day of arrival there should have been approximately 80 pitches free so it shouldn't be a problem. On arrival the office/shop was closed. Lunch hour said 1.30 - 2.30 and even though we arrived just after 1pm, there was no one around. We drove around the site to find suitable pitches but unfortunately there were none to be found.

We were surprised and disappointed with the quality of the pitches as they were so churned up and very muddy. When the office eventually reopened at 2.30 we spoke to the members of staff and a gentleman escorted 2 members of our party around the site to try to find suitable camping pitches.

Although the man assured us that they weren't full, there was no room for us unless we made camp on very muddy ground.

We asked if we could have a refund but we were told we would have to speak with the manager of the site who was out for the day in Bangor. He failed to be contacted by telephone and the members of staff didn't know how long he would be. I asked if the main telephone line for forest holidays would be able to help with a refund but he said that they would just advise me to speak with the manager also.

As we couldn't wait around for hours and were desperate to find somewhere else we decided try ringing forest holidays anyway. They were a little surprised that nobody on site could deal with our problem and issued us with a full refund right away. Needless to say we drove off and did find a beautiful spot at another campsite in the area.

We arrived early - if the reception is closed you can choose your own pitch and check in when it opens. Stayed for 2 nights in wet wales and had a great time.

The pitches are large but very dark shaded by the trees. Lots of nature - rabbits and squirrels delight for my dogs. There is a shop at reception - can order bread, bacon butties for next morning good value for £1.50 bacon roll. Had pizzas one evening £7.50 for 12' - very nice but tad pricey.

Shower block ample, nice washing up area.

Beddgelert - nice village, visited the grave. Lots of pubs, good chip shop.

Bus stop at site entrance going left the bus driver dropped us off at Rhyd-Ddu path to climb snowdon, this is a very steep track, esp with 2 dogs. We saw one person on the way up, at they top the cafe was welcoming with the hot choc. Plan was to get the train back down. But the don't let dogs on the train. So walk down the Llanberis track much easier and busy. Got a bus back to the campsite.

According to the bus timetable you have to change buses to get back, but sherpa no1, will eventually get back to the campsite. Had a great time despite the weather.

This site was pleasant and welcoming and the staff friendly. The site itself is clean and tidy and teaming with wildlife. The toilet block was clean and well maintained and never over busy so you could always get a shower.

The play area was excellent for our son to play on and make new friends. We pitched our tent next to the play area/reception which meant that there were constant comings and goings (which we liked) on a relatively flat pitch.

From what we could see, most of campers were family groups or older couples so although it was a lively site, everything was quiet after 10pm. The surroundings were lovely, as you would expect and it is only a short walk to the village.

The site shop itself allows you to order fresh food including pizzas and breakfast - the bread was excellent.

The only negatives we had were minor:- if you don't pre-book and plan to spend only 1 night there is a £2 surcharge. The reception closes for lunch Monday-Thursday (I think it was 1.30 - 2.30) which meant that there was no one around to direct new arrivals - we observed a few irate people who had booked and didn't know what to do, meaning there was a queue for bookings in. In high season you would expect it to be open through lunch.

We will definitely go back again as we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

First of all, we used both a tent and a motorhome.

The pitch we were given was reasonably flat hardstanding, made fairly recently with slate. For some reason though, all the tent pitches have been levelled with some kind of gravel, so I thoroughly advise rock pegs. We took them, and to be honest, I don’t know what we would have done without them. Also, if you are in a tent, take a couple of extra mattress layers, as some of the stones are quite large.

The whole campsite is very well looked after, with streams running through and plenty of grassy areas (although not ideal for playing with a ball).

It is located near the bottom of Beddgelert forest, but doesn’t feel too enclosed, as most of the trees in the site are well positioned hardwoods, mainly oak. There is lots of wildlife around the site, including rabbits, squirrels (only grey ones though unfortunately), and a lot of small to medium size birds.

There was a very tame robin that often hung around our pitch, even jumping up onto the same table that someone was eating off, in the hope of getting some food. Insects are fairly minimal, thanks to some ingenious bug-zappers located around the site.

However, I still recommend taking some insect repellent, as the machines don’t always work. If you can, get some Avon Skin So Soft. They sell it in the shop at the bottom. It just sprays on, and works a treat.

The forest up from the campsite has a number of marked walks, all shown on a map at the bottom. I managed to find a little loop with ought looking at it, but for the more adventurous, I recommend it.

Also running just outside the campsite is the Welsh Highland Railway, running from Caernarfon to Porthmadog, with a stop in the site. To the west, (though I don’t quite know where) is a path up to Snowdon, and of course there are tonnes of fantastic driving roads. On site, there is a little playground for the children, with the usual swings, climbing frame and slide.

There are plenty of waste bins around the site with a recycling bank by the main toilet block, which accepts cans, glass, paper and cardboard. However, I was slightly surprised by the lack of plastic recycling.

Lots of information about these and other local attractions is available in a log cabin near reception, in the form of many many leaflets. Reception itself also doubles up as a shop, selling milk, bread, eggs and other useful things little barbecues and insect repellent.

The toilet, shower and washing facilities aren’t too bad, but if you like a hot shower I advise you go early in the morning or any time in the evening, before the hot water runs out. It may look a bit old and tired in there, but it all works perfectly well, and is cleaned thoroughly every day.

One problem though, and it only happens in the men’s, is the main lighting is only occasionally on. This includes when you’re trying to get ready for bed. Apart from that and the aesthetics, it really is fine.

This is a very good site that does everything it needs to and nothing more. I’m just slightly disappointed about there being no Wi-Fi, but it’s no big loss. Just please use the recycling. It’s not hard.
