Visited this site this weekend in order to visit the Lumiere. Excellent site with immaculate facilities. Adults only, so quiet except for the guinea fowl waddling about !
Very friendly owners who were most helpful and supplied loads of information for us.
Beautiful surroundings, but still not far from Durham or local shops.
No problems with electric hookups, rubbish disposal or any other necessities.
Had there not been the threat of bad weather ahead we would have been tempted to try to extend our stay. We'll certainly be back some day.

Just returned from a great long weekend at Finchale Abbey. County Durham. Great site, very quiet, peaceful location adjacent to the River Wear. Great facilities, very well maintained. 16 amp EHU. Security barrier with card key access( £10 refundable deposit) Access via the A167 Chester le Street from the A1( don't go through Durham City centre) and don't follow sat nav which takes you off the A167 via narrow country lanes, follow the route supplied by the site owners. If you get lost look for HMP Frankland. It's about 2 miles from the prison but don't be put off by this. The site is down a wide country lane. Steep hill ascending from the site but it's only a little hill ! Overall great site, shower water pressure could be better but we used our van showe after trying the site showers. 16 amp EHU. Serviced pitches available. Hard and grass pitches. Some pitches are very un even and would require lots of levelling blocks. Best pitches are A1 to A4 which are against the Abbey walls. Great woodland and riverside walks nearby. Stay out of the resident only park home area. We went for a walk through to have a look at the park homes but did not feel welcome. Would recommend this site. Only a few miles into Durham. 10-15 mins from Beamish open air museum. Easy access and easy to find from the A1. Very helpful owners. Helped us when they supplied some fuses after our water heater tripped and blew its fuse. This is an adults only site.

Stayed at Finchale (or Finkle as. The locals apparently call it) as it was convenient for Beamish. After a little difficulty levelling our motorhome, (our pitch sloped in several directions) we explored the ruins, it was free and we found it very intriguing. After calling at the little café for an ice-cream we took the advice of the very friendly owner and crossed the river to walk through the woods. We thoroughly enjoyed a pleasant walk and as an added bonus picked lots of blackberries which made a lovely pie! The showers etc were clean and fresh, and we were made to feel welcome. Would like to come back to this site for a little longer stay and a trip into Durham on the bus which was apparently quite convenient.

Returned in our yellow bus because this site is a delight for both of us. We are relatively local but really appreciate this river valley location. Most visitors would reckon the peacock to be louder than local traffic and we saw it again this time but it has lost almost all it's tail! The guinea fowl passed by on consecutive days: they were also in good, if subtle, voice.
The facilities have been well described by other members but we especially appreciate the hardstandings which are sufficient to accommodate our bus.
On the second day we parked at the local park and ride: £2pp for the bus and a free days secure parking in a motorhome specific slot; while visiting Durham.
On the third day we walked to the bus stop up the hill and past Brasside to pick up some fresh groceries from the supermarkets at the Arnison shopping centre. Cost was £1 pp each way: we consider the walk to be more than enough to go to the nearest bus stop but were happy to be walking down the hill on the return!
We enjoyed our stay and hope to visit again before the weather becomes too severe.

My wife and I recently stopped here in our tent for two nights for the Great North Run Weekend.
Although a caravan site normally, they open up a bit of space for the weekend of the Great North run to tents. The site is very clean and quiet (traffic from the nearby motorway can be heard at night though)not a lot of room for tents and not the flattest of area either and the grass could have done with a cut prior to us arriving, however considering this was a very much cheaper option than hotels not too bad. They also provided a coach to get us to/from the Great north run which was easy and reasonably priced.
The toilet block was clean and tidy however a little dated, the showers weren't very powerful and there is no option to change the temperature. My wife also wasn't able to plug in her hair dryer or straighteners apart from this downfall we would probably come back for the duration of the Great north run again but only if they continued to lay on the transport.
Not within walking distance of any shops, or other facilities.

We have just had a 3 night stay at this site, and we agree with the majority of positive comments posted ie location, river walks, toilets etc. It is a truly wonderful campsite. We do however have 3 slightly negative comments
1) You do hear noise from children and adults alike who are visiting the abbey and could be a problem in school holidays
2) A lot of the pitches slope each and every way, and they all appear to be tarmac so you need to park with your nearside wheel on the grass to enable you to put the awning pegs in properly to enable you pull the awning it tight to the van and you will also need levellers
3) We noticed that you do hear a quite a bit of road noise from the A1(M)at night.
As we said these are only slight negatives they won't stop us returning
|
Management response: Dear Leclerc we are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us and would return but we would like to reply to your three areas of concern if we may.
1) The abbey is a free monument run by English Heritage and there are visitors through the day both adults and children who enjoy the beauty of the ruins but this is closed at five o'clock and day visitors are asked to leave the park at this time. (Day visitors have no access to the touring park at any time this is residents only) so while there may be some noise from visitors as they enjoy their visit this hopefully should be minimal.
2) The majority of our pitches are level however unfortunately it is true that several of our pitches do have a slight slope although we have tried to minimise this by providing the hard standing bases to allow the use of levellers if necessary we are somewhat restricted in what we can do as the touring park itself is part of a scheduled monument and ground works are therefore restricted.
3) Any road noise you may have been aware of at night must have been from the small local country road as due to the distance the motorway can not be heard from the park. We have never had any issue with this before but we apologise if this disturbed your stay.
We hope this answers the points you raise and look forward to seeing you with us again soon. |

Campsite : excellent in beautiful open countryside
Toilets and showers very clean
£20. 00 per night in aug 2013
Hot water at all times
£10 deposit needed for access card to showers
Awesome abbey within the grounds
River within the grounds with a lovely walkway
Small cafe on site.
Dog friendly great dog walk
Staff: Fantastically friendly. Very helpful. Felt very safe, saw them patrolling the grounds area; Short walk up two lanes with short incline to a bus stop, that takes you to Durham town Centre, which has a brilliant variety of shops and eateries. Last bus back was at 5. 15pm
Also this area is local to Beamish living museum of the North and that is definitely worth a visit . £17. 50 per person which gives you a years admission worth every penny
Overall view : we will definitely return to this campsite, we found it very easy to find and it had beautiful surroundings and views and fishing was available if requested within the grounds.

Excellent and well organised site, very pretty location with the Priory ruins a central feature. Walks along the river are great. Washrooms are kept scrupulously clean and are modern. The pitches are reasonably spaced and are all hardstanding with adjacent grass. They have the fishing rights for a mile up & down from the site, a day ticket costs £7 per day. No issues at all, they even allowed to leave our caravan on the site until mid afternoon on the day we left.

150 miles from our home to this lovely site, well worth the journey, we will be going back again in the future.
Spacious pitches with plenty of room for an awning, reasonably priced with an extra day free if staying for a week.
The toilet block was very clean every time I used it, having a nice hand wash which was always full, a powerful hand dryer and a hairdryer!
I didn't use the shower as I use our own, however my husband likes his water hot, and he says it was 'wishy washy' I presume he means it was lukewarm.
Not as many toilets/showers as on The Caravan Club sites. On the downside, I think that this could cause queues if the site was full, but, never the less they were kept just as nice.
It's a well run site with friendly staff, has a small cafe/shop and gas refills should you run out.
The view from our caravan was great, we looked out at the ruins and couldn't resist exploring nor learning about its past. Although I have to say we never saw any ghosts!
Strolling along the river bank became a daily habit, lots of folk stopped to chat, not all staying on the site.
The Finchale Abbey site has a picnic area along side the river that's open to the public as well as access to the ruins. So, although it's an adult site you will hear and see children.
As for the peacock, I never saw it, heard it twice, no bother.
We used the local bus service to go into Durham for sightseeing. Bell's fish and chip restaurant in the square is a must, reasonably priced with a good service and tasty food. A word of warning though, they use beef dripping to fry with!
Beamish Museum is not to far away, it's well worth a visit. Car parking is free, you pay your entrance fee, then they fill out your details, once this is done you are given a card, and this allows you free entrance for a year, we spread our visit over two days. They also have a fish and chip take away, (seating to the side/outside)delicious, beware though, beef drippings also used here! We ate in the cafe on our second visit and found lots to choose from, again not bad price wise.
Worthy of note. If you are a member of The Caravan Club as we are, show your membership card for another 25% off. A huge discount if you are senior folk like us.

Just returned from a lovely four day stay at Finchale Abbey, never thought id say this as we live nearby and know the area well, but what a little gem we have here. Lovely litter free dog walks along the river and small dog walk on the campsite, immaculate toilet and shower facilities, and to top it off the owners were so friendly and helpful at all times, nothing was a problem, will definitely return.
