Super relaxing place.
Friendly & helpful staff.
Clean & tidy all over the park.
I originally booked for 2 nights, liked the place so much that I extended to 4, and still did not want to leave !
(booking done online)
Perfect place to unwind.
Free showers.
Good value for money.
Bring your levellers though, as some pitches are at an angle.
Free access to the priory (abbey) ruins on site.
Little shop sells souvenirs, plus few drinks & snacks.
Lovely walks by the river.
Countryside one hour walk to Durham Cathedral, or 15min walk to bus stop.
Beamish Museum is only a 15min drive.
Many other tourist attractions nearby.
Highly recommended and will return.

Stopped here for one night as we were attending a concert in Sunderland. A lovely little site, great location overlooking the Abbey ruins - well worth a walk around!
Nice little shop/cafe on-site (part of Abbey) - great for an ice-cream to walk along the river. It was hot so people were bathing and paddling in the river.
The campsite is part of the visitors centre for the Abbey - worth noting this as there is nothing stopping folk entering the site other than no-entry signs on the floor.
Great facilities - showers hot and lots of pressure (push button). 24hr access with barrier code/ANPR was great as we returned late back to the site following the concert.
Be warned - most pitches are not level! we ended up with 4 stackers under each front steady and the jockey wheel on a block of wood, brick and stacker pad - the site does provide blocks of wood and bricks to help level, but if you turn up later these will likely be taken by other vans.

Grey waste is difficult as you have to lift the waste container about a foot to empty it in the raised grate.
States adult only but lots of family visit the Abbey and grounds at weekends and school holidays.
Pitches have easy access.
Abbey ruins are fenced off and free to visit but close about 5pm.

Fantastic site well kept toilet/ showers are spotless.
I personally can’t call it a dog walk on site it’s not big enough but we found a great walk which takes you into Durham walk back to main road turn right then left follow the road ahead Great walk in that’s what we call a dog walk.
We stayed on a service pitch oh dear what can I say about this they haven’t had a caravan themselves, got it really wrong, the tap is nearly on the floor not great, then the waste water pipe goes in a small hole on the floor too.
So for your water to drain it has to go up hill but for it to start draining in the first place it will back up in your pipe once it’s nearly backed up it’s reached your van, then it will start to drain. they’ve got it so wrong it should go into the ground like all other sites do it. I’m hoping they fix this problem.
Otherwise it’s a fantastic site highly recommend

A great site, and not hard to find or to get to, as the access road is pretty easy to navigat.
It is as pretty as it looks on their website, plus the managers also run a small cafe/shop which is handy, plus also do Calor gas exchanges. Entry and exit is via an ANPR operated barrier.
The site is quite well laid out around three sides of a large grassy filed, so I think you'll always feel you have space around you. We booked one of the super service pitches (labelled T1 if you really want to know) and we had a great view over the site and the abbey.
The pitch itself is a bit of an oddity - half tarmac and half grass, so to get our awning up I had to get the caravan wheel right on the edge of the tarmac, and put the awning on the grass, but still couldn't get the awning tight to the caravan side as I didn't want to try driving rock pegs into the tarmac. The space left on the other side of the van was in no way big enough for a car. Maybe I approached this all wrong, but in a nutshell, if you're used to typical C&CC/CAMC hardstanding gravel pitches, you may end up wondering what they were thinking of.
Additionally, the grey waste is into a grommeted orifice, but it's set too high into the revetted banking at the rear, therefore we ended getting flowback from our grey waste into the shower basin. I had to do the naughty thing, and let the grey waste drain into the grass at the side of the pitch.
The site features a flock of Guinea Fowl, which always appreciated some bird food. Please don't be like one dog owner who's dog decided to chase them around for a bit.
Overall - a great looking site, spotless and modern facilities, and one we will return to!

Loved the site. So quiet and peaceful. Checking in was easy too and absolutely everyone we met was lovely. What we particularly liked was the location.
Having the Priory on-site was a bonus, beautiful woodlands to walk our dog and interesting walks one day on the Northern Saints Way into Durham which was so interesting and another on the trail in the other direction to Lumley castle and the woodlands there.
So beautiful, peaceful and historic we shall definitely return

A beautiful site on the grounds of the ruins of Finchale Priory. Virtually in the City of Durham, yet in the countryside away from everywhere.
Friendly warden who was very accommodating. I had the unusual request of having a friend drive the van on for me as I was unable to drive following a stroke, and my partner drove separately. This was no trouble at all.
There is a barrier for the entrance and exit. If advised in advance, your vehicle registration is added to their ANPR system so will operate automatically on arrival. Alternatively there is a code which you will also need for exiting. There is another code for the toilet blocks.
Toilet blocks are clean and spacious, though the lighting isn't great - the lights are in the middle of the room which means the cubicles and showers can be quite dim. The accessible shower in the mens was no more than a dribble.
My partner said there was plenty of water pressure in the women's. Showers were blisteringly hot with no temperature control. There is a separate room for washing up, though we actually found the water quite cool there. There is also a small, locked room with a washing machine and tumble dryer which I guess you can hire
Pitches are on a slope and are tarmac with ragged edges. Make sure you get your caravan right on the edge if you have an awning, else it will be difficult to peg down. Heavy rains meant that the grass was very muddy, but you can't blame the site for that - it's North east England.
There are ducks, guinea fowl and other birds freely wandering the site which is so lovely to see. You can buy food for them on site
The absolute star of the show is that you are right next to the ruins of the Priory and can wander to your heart's content during opening hours. The River Wear runs right alongside the site and there is a bridge across it. Plenty of amazing walks right there.
The site has a small shop and advertises a cafe, although it is very arbitrary as to whether it opens. On our first day the lady refused to let us in and said they only open when it is busy enough. They will serve through a serving hatch though but it did mean sitting on wet picnic benches outside. Nice coffee and hot chocolate though. We didn't try the food due to sitting outside in the wet.
The closest pub is about a 7 minute drive along a narrow country lane. I wouldn't suggest walking it at night, or when 'under the influence'. Great pub though, very friendly and with nice food - it's a Marsdon's so not cheap but it was tasty and well cooked, with great service.
A few minutes further drive is the Arnison Centre which has a Sainsbury, McDonald's, Lidl (which was closed for refurb) and a decent selection of retail park shops. Durham city itself is only a short drive, or you could use the nearby Sniperly Park and Ride. Durham city is a great place to visit with the historic Cathedral and castle, riverside walks and so on.
It's an adult only site, cost was £26 per night inc EHU. Prices do vary a little and they also have a few fully services pitches, a couple of Superpitches and some Motorhome specific pitches.
All in all it is a lovely little site with incredible views and I'll definitely be back.

This was a lovely quite Adults only site, next to an old Abbey with a Beautiful river running past.
There was a map of the site, so we could choose our pitch on booking. We had a serviced pitch.
It's made quite clear, that some of the pitches may be uneven and what amps the pitches are. So again, there's all the info you neeed, so you can book what suits you.
The Toilets and showers were lovely, warm and clean. Disabled toilet and shower as well.
Ducks and Guinea Fowl wandering around.
Abbey Free to visit.
Little shop and café.
Nice walk along the river.
Lovely site tucked away down a country lane.
Short car journey to pubs and shopping centre.
Perfect x
