We have stayed at this lovely site twice now and seem to enjoy ourselves more on each occasion. Finchale Abbey is one of the best kept secrets in County Durham. The site itself is immaculate with first class facilities. The staff are great, really friendly and polite and always willing to help if you need anything. Anyway don't let me spoil the surprise, go and try it for yourselves, you won't be disappointed!.

Just spent two nights at finchale abbey caravan park. Our pitch was large and backed onto the abbey, which was a pleasure to look at. Site kept clean and the staff were friendly. The walk along the river wear was lovely, of course the nice weather made it even better. We didn't use the shower block as we use the facilities in our van, but we did look in and they were spotless. We enjoyed a meal in the Newton Grange pub just a mile and a half up the road. We would come back to this site, never heard the peacock all weekend, we caught a small glimpse of him near the statics. We had a lovely peaceful weekend. Thank you.

Just returned from 4 nights at this beautifully green and peaceful site. Though only a few miles from home we felt we had truly escaped to the heart of the country. Ideally situated on the banks of the river so both we and our elderly dogs could enjoy the riverside walks. A very dog friendly site with a lovely dog walking area close to the caravan with both bins and bags available.
The toilet block is immaculate with lovely showers and cubicles complete with hair dryer.
The owners and staff all very friendly which always scores highly with us and the resident peacock and flock of guinea fowl were a joy to watch.
There is a pub a short drive up the road which seemed to have some good offers though we did nt fit in a visit this time and a small retail park nearby with a large Sainsbury s etc had every thing we needed.
Unfortunately there were only a few level pitches and levelling the caravan was somewhat of a problem in fact the worse I have encountered up to now. However it would not deter us from returning and I'm quite sure there would have been help if needed, but if a level pitch is important to you then best to check availability before booking.
The site is very quiet but if you want to relax, chill and drink in the scenery then it d an ideal choice and we hope to visit again if a level pitch available.

Dropped in for a couple of days to try the site which was one of the best we have been to. Lovely surroundings with the abbey and river.
Staff very friendly and very helpful. The dog loved the lovely walks along the river and sign of a good site is a fully booked one which this one was. Visited the local shops and you could buy anything you needed. We will be back very soon for another few days stay.
Many Thanks from Ronny and Pauline

My wife and I visited this site on 1st July 2013 for 5 nights. What a beautiful site. Very tranquil and very well run park in the grounds of a Benedictine Abbey ruin. There is free entry into the abbey grounds. Lovely walks by the river Wear. Toilet block immaculate. Owners and staff all very helpful and friendly. About a mile and half to retail park with Sainsburys, M&S Poundland and many more shops. Well positioned for visiting Newcastle, Durham and other attractions in the area.
Really enjoyed our stay here and will certainly be visiting again.

My husband and I have just returned from this site. We will definitely be returning. The setting is stunning right next to Finchale Priory. The park was beautifully kept and very peaceful. The toilet/shower block are amongst the best we have used and very clean. Chemical waste/Grey and fresh water points were all clearly marked. We enjoyed hearing the sound of the peacock although unfortunately we didn't catch a glimpse of it. There are lots of places to visit nearby Durham being the closest.

Just come home from staying at finchale abbey caravan park. What a lovely site. The wardens were very helpful and the new shower block was easy to use considering my wife is disabled and she managed to use the cubicle for disabled quite comfortably. The abbey within the grounds is very interesting and the resident peacock was a delight to see. I will definitely book again next time I'm in the vicinity.

I have never before written an online review for any site that my husband and I have stayed at but after reading a recent negative comment feel it only fair to the establishment to share my feedback.
The owners and staff were all extremely helpful and friendly. The site was beautiful, the location one of the best I have ever visited. The ruins (free to enter), river and woodland walks could not have been better. Very close to historic Durham, easily walking distance.
There is a small shop for tea/coffee, snacks and ice creams. The weather was gorgeous when we stayed and there were quite a few day trippers visiting the priory. No visitors entered the private touring area and all left by 5pm so did not interrupt our stay. The site was busy but as it is adult only you would have thought we were alone on this lovely site.
Final comment is on the resident peacock, we loved to see him wandering around the site and only heard him 'honk' on one occasion.
Will will definitely be visiting this site again.

Staff brilliant.
I did find the pitch a little too close to neighbour. I think I was on C1.
Beautiful site on the grounds of the Abbey.
A sheet with more info should have been given on arrival like - bus times, good walks, common birds local to area etc.
Not impressed with showers (kept going off when water was being run else where), and not impressed with the one hair dryer, hand dryer had more heat and power.
A very peaceful site and in a beautiful area.

We stayed for two nights in our yellow bus leaving on a Saturday morning and had a wonderful quiet restful stay on this site.
We used electrical hookup and had the choice of the F2 or F3 pitches which are on the facilities access road and are hardstandings with a slight to moderate slope.
As others have written the facilities are good and the owners very welcoming.
The site has generous space between pitches and was quite popular while still having spare places perhaps due to it being early June.
We intend to visit again - even though it is relatively local for us - purely for the tranquillity we enjoyed while we stayed.
