Just back from this site. It is a lovely site, right on the river. We took our 2 retrievers who loved it. There are lots of lovely walks, and they were able to swim in the river. The Priory is gorgeous, and they have a little shop/cafe right next to it. We had a super plot, which gave water, waste and a bigger v of electricity. The site was very clean & well maintained. We didn't use the wash faclities but they looked lovely. We are going back for the wifes birthday in September. Views amazing, cant fault it.

Just returned from 2 great nights here. Inspite of our late arrival we were greeted heartily by Jack who went through the necessary paperwork quickly and led us to our pitch. He gave us a large pitch and showed us where all of the amenities could be found and we soon settled in.

It's a beautiful site, on the river Wear and right next to the ruins of Finchale Abbey. There are some great riverside walks and it was very quiet which ensured a couple of great nights sleep.

The facilities were very clean and the shower/toilet block which operates on a card entry system was clean, warm and modern. There's a small shop/ cafe on site too

We greatly enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it to anyone. It was only £40 for two nights and they let us stay until late in the afternoon without expecting additional payment.

Two things you might consider are that it is adult only and secondly the signs to the site are poor if you're trying to follow them. We were lucky that I used to live in the area so knew the route. I'm not sure it's the easiest place to find.

Overall, a lovely site, small, quiet, good facilities and really nice people who cheerily helped us whenever asked.

This site is set in the stunning grounds of Finchale Abbey, an English Heritage Site, next to the River Wear. To get to the site you go down a lane for a mile or so which if we hadn’t checked it out on Google earth first we would have been concerned about taking a van down it.

After the Trauma’s of a Tow car breakdown on the way up we contacted the site to say we would be a day late, they couldn’t have been more helpful and it was not a problem to arrive a day late and stay a day later (with no extra charges).

Ok, firstly the ‘areas for development’ although we stayed on a “super pitch” the standard pitches were quite uneven in places and we noticed many vans having to use blocks to support steadies as they were that far from the ground and others with the back ends of the vans almost touching the grass. However the pitches were well spaced out, all hard standing with good road access to each pitch and if you pay the extra fiver a night have a ‘Super Pitch’ which was with it’s own water and drains on a level concrete pitch with a dedicated parking space and Picnic bench. The only other little niggle was the amount of water that the showers delivered was a bit to “Eco-Friendly”.

Now the good bits, the toilets and showers were extremely well maintained, always clean and warm (even when it was -4 outside). The rubbish area was well organised for recycling of all recyclables. The site was always quiet and tranquil (we like adult only sites). It was a very picturesque site you had free access to the Abbey and walks along the river and the local countryside. All the staff were really friendly and helpful and were their whenever you wanted them.

Local area, 10 minutes away is a retail park with a Sainsbury’s, Lidl and many other retail outlets. There are Marston’s and Brewers Fayre pubs on the way to the Retail park. Beamish Museum is 20 minute drive a way which is an excellent day out whether you are 8 years old or 80 (Tip – Be at Davy’s Fish and chips at least 10 minutes before they open and be first in the queue as a Coal fired Chippy can’t serve as fast as a modern one BUT you must experience these chips as they really are “Old fashioned”.

A drive to Durham to see the Cathedral and Newcastle is a nice trip out and get the regulatory photo at the bottom of the “Angel of the North”.

Overall an Excellent site which we would not hesitate to recommend or to stay at again.

Visited 29-11-12 to 02-12-12 in order to visit Durham Xmas market. It was a very cold, bright clear weekend with sub-zero night time temperatures, which resulted in the direct water feed on the serviced pitch freezing up but the campsite owners can't be held responsible for that!

Despite the above we had a great weekend. The Xmas market was good and there is a shopping centre 5 minutes from the site, with a Sainsbury's, Aldi, Asda home, Poundland, Next etc. So my wife was really spoilt for choice. There are several nice pubs selling food nearby and also an Indian restaurant. We tried the Chester Moor pub on the A167 and it was excellent and good value.

The site has a relatively new toilet block, which is small but adequate and was nice and warm on the cold mornings. The walks adjacent to the river were great and I imagine in the warmer months the whole immediate area would be fantastic. We did see a couple of peacocks one day but they quickly disappeared, maybe it was too cold for them as well!

The only negative for me is when you entered the touring caravan park area there were 2 very scruffy caravans, which were not occupied whilst we were there and which looked like they had been abandoned there years ago. They were very unsitely and spoilt what is a very nice site.

Loved this site, we visited for the first time for two nights. Less than an hour from home, but so quiet and peaceful. We were able to choose our own hardstanding pitch, which was long enough, but slightly too narrow to get the step on as well, though that is only a small gripe. Weather was cold and dry, which was lovely for riverside walks with the dog, who loves a swim.

Showers and toilets were warm, clean and never busy. Two peacocks slept in a tree near our pitch and a flock of birds roamed around sqwarking merrily, like a gaggle of giggling school girls! Very funny to watch and our dog was totally bemused by the whole thing!

Just spent 3 great nights at Finchale Abbey, it was the 1st time we had stayed and didn't arrive till 7pm. Driving down the initial road to the entrance we thought oh! oh! But once we got onto the private road and entered the grounds we were taken aback as it was beautiful, spotlessly clean & very well set out.

The owner was waiting for us and was absolutely brilliant from the word go explaining all about the site & was interested in what/where we wanted to go, giving us advice on best way to go about these activities which really made us feel welcome.

If you want peace and quiet this site is for you as adults only and with the added protection of CCTV cameras about the site, great stuff.

Lots of walks and you if you fancy a pint & meal walk to the Newton Grange Pub (great staff)

We will definitely being going back before Xmas.

We spent 5 days in this wonderful site. The situation is amazing I did not expect it to be in the Abbey ruins itself. Plenty of dog walks and the scenery along the river and Abbey made walking the dog a pleasure even in the rain.

The toilet block was just as I would have liked, plenty of space in the shower cubicles, with a chair and hangers provided, my only downside and this is being very picky, the water pressure in the shower head was not very high, I have long hair and it took a while to rinse out which I thought was not very eco-friendly, I felt very guilty at having to press the shower button three times to get the soap off my hair when on the days when I did not wash my hair one push was my than sufficient for a shower. I therefore marked down the facilities but for that reason only.

Every body was so friendly and helpful I certainly would return to this site. It was quiet, clean and shops/supermarket nearby and of course a pub. They are a distance from the site it could be walked if you were fit but in reality a car is needed. It was our first time at an adults only and I would certainly look again at sites like this. I would rather have kept this site a secret but I made a promise to the owners to write a review.

We stayed at this lovely campsite for two nights. Beautifully clean shower rooms and the owner was very friendly and helpful. This is a very peaceful site with spacious pitches and perfect for a relaxing weekend. We walked through to Durham City and back (about 4 miles each way) which was a lovely walk. Good area for dog walking on site. The woods across the other side of the river are excellent for walking. Would thoroughly recommend this site.

Enjoyed two days at Finchale Abbey, well signposted, welcome and very helpful reception,

Excellent facilities (showers and wash-up incl), free WiFi at reception area,

Good pitches,

1 mile walk to nearest bus stop,

I was given a price discount as a single occupant,

Lovely setting, pedestrian bridge to far side of river, interesting Abbey (free access to campers), great for walking and mountain biking,

Would certainly return and recommend. Suggest mileage sign at main road and bigger sign at reception.

Stayed here last month. Lovely campsite and a very helpful and friendly warden who keeps plenty of brochures of local interest.

There is some nice walks on the river bank and a cafe which sells snacks and drinks with free entry to the priory which is well worth a walk round.

There is a car boot held on a Sunday nearby and the site is near to Beamish and Durham. The shower block and toilets are very well kept and clean.

The site is quiet on a night and I believe campers can use the local golf clubhouse bar on an evening. However after a day sightseeing we choose not to use this so couldn't say what it is like.

I would highly recommend this site when visiting Durham.
