If you're after a more commercial campsite which is more or less right on the beach this is the campsite for you. I went during term time so was quite quiet however I can imagine during the school holidays it gets very busy. Lots of facilities on site including swimming pool, shop, takeaway, bar/restaurant and kids arcades. It has lovely views over Croyde Bay and with being so close to the beach perfect for the kids. Plenty of toilets, showers and washing up facilities which were very clean. Only downside is apart from the beach there isn't much to do around Croyde so you have to drive for quite a while to get to anywhere else. Overall though pretty good, I would go again.

We have just returned from a weeks stay at Ruda. I will start with the positives: The pitches (for caravans)are a reasonable size and have good access to water and electric hook up and the shower and toilet blocks are exceptionally clean. The site has excellent access to the beach but it is worth noting that the touring section of the site is directly opposite the public car park for the beach and is across the road from the main section of the Parkdean site.
Now the negatives: Access to the site is through small villages and small tracks. The pitches are muddy and water-log easily in even the slightest rain. It is worth noting that this site is very windy! We were not aware of this before arriving but speaking to a couple of regulars they advised that this is generally the case. Unfortunately the week that we stayed we experienced gale force winds (up to 80mph gusts!) and neighboring vans had their awnings ripped up by the wind :( I would suggest no awning or good storm straps and pegs!
Overall we were very disappointed with this site - we have stayed at other Parkdean sites so felt comfortable booking for Ruda. The site is very small and very quiet! We went in the Easter holidays and expected the site to be full of people - there were only 5 caravans pitched! The staff were not at all helpful and the entertainment was exceptionally poor - not what was advertised and with the entertainment crew making things up as they went along (including playing backing tracks from a crew members phone and asking the audience how to do a particular dance as they didn't know!) The amenities on site are small and there isn't much to do nearby - most attractions/days out are at least a 45 minute car journey away.

This is an excellent site. Decent pitches, although could be a tiny bit bigger. The on site toilet block is well kept. Excellent pond and play area. Amazing privately owned beach. Good bar and restaurant. Overall fantastic site. Would definitely recommend it.

Just returned from this site. It was very busy, as you might expect in August. However, it was quiet and everybody was really friendly. The staff in reception are mixed, some are welcoming but one particular member of the reception team was rude, lacked customer service skills and seemed to not know what her job was. I suspect she was a manager!.
The pool was extremely busy and we would like to see an adults only pool area or at least a second pool. Having to pay for the privilege of the overcrowded pool was not really worth the money and we did not go again. A shame when you consider how much we paid for this site - the most expensive by far that we have ever been on. The toilets were messy and I do despair of the toilet habits of some of my fellow campers. Hope that they do not treat their own toilets like this. However, the pitches were clean and tidy and the food in the restaurant was okay, probably average priced. A note to Parkdean, please do not feel the need to blare out rap 'tunes' all day and night. Surely some gentle background music will suffice.
Honest opinion, we will return but that is only because of the direct and brilliant access to the beach. Wake up Ruda, if you did not have the beach feet from the resort, you would lose trade. We certainly would give this site a miss if there was another with equally good access to the beach.

We had a great time here with our 4 children aged 3 to 8. The facilities were great, always kept clean, the staff on the site were pleasant and helpful and the entertainment was great. Our children loved the kids entertainment in the evening. The position of the site is brilliant, right next to the beach and we were lucky enough to have sunshine every day. Would not hesitate to recommend this site and will be back very soon. The only improvements I can think of would be a children's bathroom to make bathing them easier and maybe an outdoor pool?

PITCH WARNING - we have just returned from a weeks trip at Ruda and must warn fellow campers to be wary of pitch 18 and 19 if rain is forecast as these pitches get heavily flooded and waterlogged. We were on pitch 19 and although the site were quick to react and form a sand dam along the front of our pitch to hold the rain water these pitches do have a huge drainage problem, as the rain just sits there and pools leaving the whole pitch with standing water. A couple of local services told us that the pitches flood regularly when there is heavy rain so our experience is not a one off. However, I must follow this up with the fact that if we had not had rain, and therefore this problem, this review would be glowing. The site location couldn't be better. We experienced no noise issues from other campers. The facilities were great (although our toilet and shower facilities were a little dated but clean) including a very well stocked shop, reasonably priced restaurant and entertainment, great chippie and the swimming pool was great fun and very well run at busy times. Regarding the pitch issue I must also add that we were offered another pitch but declined as we were with a group and the sand dam greatly assisted our situation.

Regularly use this site early May (as the better Cherry Tree site is closed until later in the year. Usually give this place 10/10 but this weekend only 5 working showers for ladies and 3-4 for men, one entire(main) block were cold only due to a prob with hot water. Ridiculous for a busy bank holiday weekend. Luckily the site wasn't full but there were still lengthy queues, and as Ruda is expensive I would have expected better.

I think it would be fair to say that We love this camp site! My wife has been coming here since the 70’s and it was the site we came to for our first family holiday when our children were little in 1992!
Now the children are off hand we go back on our own most years to enjoy some peace and quiet!
This year we could only fit in a four day stay in September which, given the amazing summer we have had and the fact that the weekend we chose was when the weather broke, was a bit of a shame!
We arrived a lot earlier than the normal 2pm booking in time and were prepared to wait in the car park and get some lunch at the camp restaurant, but on enquiring at reception, the staff were friendly and helpful, we were allowed to set up on our pitch early. This was good because it meant we were able to make the most of our first day there.
The pitches themselves are large and well-marked out. We paid extra for the EHO but there are plenty of serviced and unserviced pitches. Most have great views of the sea too.
Dinner that night was fish and chips from the camp shop, the price was about the same as my local fish shop, and the quality was good.
As others have mentioned location is everything with Ruda and a post dinner walk on the beach on the last of the summer days was fabulous. In the village, which is about 15 minute’s walk away, there are plenty of places to eat, some good pubs and a couple of shops selling supplies as well as the omni present surf shops. We have eaten in most of the places over the years and can honestly say I have never been served portions bigger than those they serve in The Thatch pub! Tasted great too!
Back at the camp and a hot shower was welcomed. There was plenty of hot water and given the lateness of the hour, they were clean. There are two shower blocks. The lower ones have large cubicles and are good for families. The upper block is larger and has been revamped this year. Because we were fairly late in the season there were always plenty of showers and toilets and we never had to queue. Even in the height of the season when the camp has been full there has never been too much of a problem. If you have your own equipment there are chemical disposal points at each toilet block.
Fresh water is provided from standpipes in each camping field.
Washing up facilities are good and washing up liquid is provided which is good as we forgot ours!
For those who want it there is a full entertainments programme in the clubhouse. We don’t use that preferring to watch the sun set and listen to the sound of the waves! There is also a leisure pool on site which my kids used to love.
If surfing is your thing I think you’d be hard pushed to find a better location. With plenty of gear shops and hire shops and a surf school all within walking distance of the site and the beach. To this end Wetsuit showers are also provided.
When the rain came it came with a vengeance and the pitches, which were bone dry, did puddle a little but soon drained, however as the weather remained wet for the rest of our stay, the ground did get a bit spongy. If I had any criticism it would be that the pitches are not given time to recover and as a result, after a busy summer, are a bit bare of grass.
You have to vacate the pitch by 10 am, which is a bit early I think but we managed it and went straight to reception to book next year’s holiday! Anyone know what the weather will be like next June?

I love this site! It's location is second to none and is one our favourites, just metres from the beach and half a mile from the charming village of Croyde.
We've been to Croyde many times but this was our second visit to Ruda and we pitched up in Croyde Burrows for seven nights. We had the most amazing weather, which no doubt contributed to our enjoyment of the site, of which there was little to fault.
The shower block had been updated this year which was a welcome improvement, although I do wish the temperature could be controlled by the user as they were very hot on a sweltering hot day. They also only last for about 15 seconds so you need to keep your wits about you so not to be left with shampoo in your eyes. I wonder why there isn't a second block at the far end of the site as its quite a trudge.
The site was lovely and quiet for the first part of our stay, although the last two nights coincided with the schools breaking up for the summer so it got much busier. It's certainly worth considering going slightly out of the high season if possible as there is a better 'vibe' when a little quieter.
We ate out at the Coast restaurant on the site on the opposite side of the road and found the food tasty and good value for money. We also enjoyed the Cascades pool, again great if you can have a dip away from the peak times when it gets very busy.
Overall we had a fab holiday and will no doubt be returning.

We stayed here last weekend (Whitsun weekend) and last year too. We also stayed here about 8 years ago and vowed we'd never come back.
But the location right next to the beach, within walking distance to the village and close to Natural Trust Baggy Point is absolutely excellent. We now have young children and the great location makes logistics so easy.
I am afraid that is where the good bits about Ruda end for us.
What was really galling was we paid £50 a night! For that price you expect a pretty special site.
Our 7 year old loves the pool and especially the slide, but the water and air temperature is freezing. After queueing to get in for 20 minutes and battling the Whitsun crowds in the changing rooms, our 2 year old wanted to get out after 5 minutes of being in the pool because she was so cold. We managed another 15 minutes or so, but then my husband and I decided we wanted to get out too. The same thing happened last year. The showers in the changing rooms were too cold to rinse off in because we were chilled to the bone and couldn't stand it any longer.
The on site supermarket is expensive and not brilliantly stocked as they would rather use the shop space to stock gifts and sell out of food.
Last year we used the coffee shop for breakfast and had coffee in the Atlantic Bar. The service was UNBELIEVABLY slow (think 30 minutes in a queue you think you will be in for 10 minutes) and the food is fairly poor.
This last weekend some toilets had run out of loo roll, had broken locks and were not that clean generally.
Considering the cost you would expect a brilliant playground. It's not that great - it's a bog standard playground with swings and slide etc in a field.
You can't drop your kids off at the kids club apparently - you have to supervise them - so we didn't bother.
All in all the service and facilities would have been disappointing if we'd paid £20 a night.
