This is a great site for getting away from noise, mobile phones and I-pads, traffic, light pollution and other distractions of modern life. I've never camped anywhere quite as dark and peaceful.
We were late arrivals on august bank holiday weekend and missed out on the best pitches, on the left-hand side of the track that runs through the whole site (ie on the river-side). The strip of grass on the right is all on a slight slope, which was just about ok and we could still hear the river at night.
The plus side of being away from the water is the slightly reduced midge problem. Go to the 4th field and light a fire and maybe disappear inside at dusk, because the midges were really quite awful - though they're probably not as bad during less balmy weather.
Bring a good torch, as you might end up a long walk from the bathrooms, as we were. The hot water was great, the showers better than ours at home. The bathroom block above the third field was a bit rustic for our small daughter's taste, but fine for me.
Our daughter loved the swing hanging from the tree and enjoyed playing by the river and watching the collies, sheep and hens. She met some children to play with, but the layout of the site (long and spread out) was not brilliant for muscling in on other children's games. (as we've found at other sites, with a central space between tents)
Bring essential groceries and any unusual ingredients you might need. We found food shopping and eating out (and petrol) all more expensive than in SE London. We didn't come across any really good local food shops, though maybe the market in somewhere like Dulverton might be worth a try.
There was a nice greengrocer in Dulverton. The pubs in Exford we found to be just ok. Offered a warm welcome, but pretty average food. The Crown is posher, but still not great food (especially for vegetarians).
We also tried the Black Venus in Challacombe - with great chips and v v friendly staff, but it still was pretty average pub food in my opinion, (though I'm a bit fussy!).
There are some wonderful outings from this site (all with car, you will be driving a lot): Porlock, Lynmouth, tunnels beach at Ilfracombe (v rocky, with tidal pool), many many walks on Exmoor, loads of beautiful villages, Tarr Steps (try this late in the day, when the crowds have diminished, the Watersmeet walk from Lynmouth (which was beautiful, though extremely popular).
The Exmoor Pony Centre near pretty Dulverton is v sweet and the volunteers just lovely people. Exmoor Zoo was fab (don't normally like zoos), quite small, with 'natural' enclosures. The greatest pleasure for me though was lighting a fire at night, under the extraordinary sky, and listening to the owls.
Despite the site being nearly full when we arrived, it was still fairly quiet at night and it cleared out on Bank Holiday Monday, despite it still being school holidays.
The owners are helpful and the shop (open 1 hour AM and 1 hour PM) has some useful stuff. The meat looked good - shame we don't eat it. A lovely site, but come prepared for midge attack.

Calm and peaceful from the moment we drove into the campsite.
The only noise was the sound of the sheep in the adjourning field and the gurgling of the water from the stream. It was perfect for us to just relax and get away from the stress of everyday working life.
Toilets and showers spotlessly clean with plenty of loo rolls. It was lambing season and we were able to see the newborn lambs as well as the calves just born.
Plenty of walks around the campsite and plenty of space to play and for the children to run around in.
There was even an amazing sight of a hedgehog in the middle of the night paying us a visit to find food.

We visited for three nights - two of us in our second youth getting back in to camping again in a newly acquired tent.
We chose to stay in field 4, because much to my partner's amusement I'm a bit of a pyromaniac and fancied the chance of having a campfire. In our experience, although there are quite a lot of them, there is no guarantee of getting a pitch with a designated spot for lighting a fire.
This is a lovely family-friendly farm site. In our view it was all the better for not having very much formal play equipment - great to see kids messing about in the stream or youngsters trying out their bikes on the driveway.
I was a bit worried that the site wouldn't suit us because we went without any children, but the atmosphere was great: lovely to see families having a good time together. Everyone settled down at a reasonable time, so it was easy to get a good night's sleep.
Onsite facilities were very good, with a pleasant walk down a quiet road to pubs, tea rooms and village shop in Exford. Good walks around the farm too, with a chance to see the (some rather frisky!) herd of Aberdeen Angus.
We would be happy to go back again.

Is very difficult to fault with this site.
The owners are very polite, there is a well stocked shop on site, the toilets (5 in the gents) and the showers (3 free to use cubicles in the gents, all nice and hot) are immaculate. There is a free freezer for ice packs, and a free fridge too.
A modern washing machine and tumble dryer are available 24/7 for a small charge. There are 4 well maintained fields (though non have electric hook ups) and the beautiful river Exe flows at bottom of them all.
Despite heavy rain during the week we was there, the ground remained quite firm despite being next to the river. The real plus though, is as the site is in a valley, there is no mobile phone reception. No annoying tones going off in the middle of the night, bliss.
The nearest village, Exford, is about 2 miles and has a local store, post office, cafe, pub and hotel. The pub, The Crown is more of a locals pub, and the food a bit pricey (mostly around £15 for a main course) but the beer was good.
The Hotel, The White Horse Inn was better priced for food(around £10 for a main course), the beer was excellent, and the bar staff superb. After a long drive from London collecting my kids, we missed meal time, but the bar man was only too willing to go into the kitchen and knock up my boys a delicious ham sandwich each.
We all had a fantastically relaxed and fun week here.

We spent 4 nights here, easy to find and booking in easy. We set up tent in field 4 for the open fire, tried the showers friday night also sat morning no hot water told reception and by the time we got back we had hot water, there is no playground for the kids but there is a river to explore.
Even though this is a family campsite I think they might have a couple of fields for families as on the sat I was woken up 4 times with a child crying, I travelled 10 hrs on a coach to have a break from my grandchild crying at night, but apart from that and the midges having their feast we had a really good time.
The whitehorse does excellent food but book a table for at night as it does get busy. Would go back again but pitch our tent away from the trees an midges.
The people that own this site are really friendly and also the farm dog who enjoyed breakfast with us.

Arrived Friday afternoon of the May bank hol weekend.
The site consists of 4 fields.
Checked in at reception and was told that a large portion of the site was water logged. Maps (sheets of A4 paper) of each field showing where it was possible to pitch. Fields 1, 2 and 3 are sheltered.
I chose field 4 as I was part of a group and we wanted to have a camp fire.
The only possible pitches in field 4 were to the right of the track. This consisted of a slightly sloping strip of grass. The main field by the river was water logged. Camp fires are only allowed in the specified places. Wood and gas available from farm.
The shower/wash up block by field 4 was not in use, as it was having work done to it.
The other shower block is by the farm which is quite a walk from field 4. The showers were kept clean and tidy. Hot water is provided by Solar Panels which seemed to work well considering the weather. The nearest working water point was by field 2, again quite a walk.
One of the downsides if that is the right word, is that D of E kids use this site and on the Saturday / Sunday the facilities were strained at times. Also expect to be woken early, not so much the kids but the supervisors starting up the Mini Buses.
Had the recent weather not have been so wet the site would have been a lot busier and the facilities would have struggled.
There isn't a children's playground but a few rope swings were around.
There is no mobile phone reception, in fact you have to drive some miles before you get a signal. Pay Phone at farm.
There is a shop and Post Office in the village, about 2 1/2 miles.
If you want a bigger choice (Tesco-Morrisons) then Minehead is the nearest about 15 miles.
Places to visit.
West Somerset Railway at Minehead.
Lynton and Lynmouth is also about 15 miles.
Lynton and Barnstable Railway 2-3 mile from Lynton.
Porlock and Porlock Weir a short drive over the moor.
A word of warning, if you follow your Sat-Nav to the site it may take you over a very narrow bridge.
It's best to turn right in the village, past the shop and Post Office then fork left after half a mile or so. Signed.
Would I return, yes.

We have just returned from twelve days at Westermill which proved to be an excellent family site. We were there as an extended family group of eight adults, one dog, and four small children who loved the freedom and the opportunities to play around the stream, make dams, launch blow-up boats, climb trees and explore the natural environment. These activities provided lots of opportunities for making friends with other children. Our group also included a 92 year-old great-grandmother who adored being out under canvas again.
We opted for the field with fireplaces so that we could teach the children about campfires, as well as enjoying making bread over the fire. The fire provided a useful focus after dark, and the smoke seemed to repel the midges somewhat.
The site tended to fill up at weekends, then empty again on Monday. Despite these busy periods the site did not feel at all noisy or rowdy. Certainly we were never kept awake by any kind of anti-social behaviour.
The facilities are fairly basic. Some of the showers can suffer from a shortage of warm water at busy times, and on occasion the loos run out of toilet-paper. However, there was always plenty of hot water for washing-up. And with four small children, the washing-machine and dryer were very useful, indeed essential.
The owners are very friendly and helpful, and certainly do their best to smooth over any problems. It is also interesting to watch the cattle and the workings of the farm going on all around. There is plenty of wildlife on the fringes of the campsite as well as opportunities for exploring on recommended paths.
Whilst it is possible to while away whole days on the campsite itself, there are some lovely spots nearby for outings. Porlock Weir is great for catching crabs. Tarr Steps is a lovely spot with delightful riverside walks. The Exmoor Owl and Hawk Centre at Bossington is good value for families, as is the Lynton and Barnstaple Steam Railway accessed at Woody Bay Station. There is not much sand on the Exmoor coast, but Lee Bay is an idyllic cove with enough sand to keep children happy all afternoon.

Well this is the third time we have been to this site. When we thought it would be busy due to school holidays we were mistaken how peaceful and not too many people there.
So there was plenty of room to set up. We camped in the first field right by the river Exe this was lovely and quiet. I think if you want a fire, field four is the choice but this can get noisy and busy due to this feature.
The toilets were acceptable again but the only criticism is they could do with a touch more cleaning during the day.
The surrounding areas are brilliant for walkers with lots of walks available some starting from the site.
So well worth a visit even thou we were woken up by an helicopter one night what was hoovering above the campsite and shaking the tents, but this does not happen normally.

Had a thoroughly relaxing three nights at Westermill, two adults plus dog. Beautiful secluded part of Exmoor with a river running through the site.
We pitched in Field 4 so that we could have a fire - this field was very busy on Fri & Sat, but the other fields had pretty river access and were quieter so may not go for the fire option next time.
Piping hot showers with plenty of hot water in clean basic facilities. Shop sold a good selection of staples, plus fresh bread & a good frozen meat selection for the BBQ, also bottles of wine, and wood for your fire pit.
Take some insect repellent - a little midgy, but well worth it for such a wonderful spot - a great place to play in rivers & light fires - it's what camping should like!
Friendly welcome, especially from Zak, Top Collie.

Just come back from 4 nights at Westermill. Overall we had a great time, but as so often that probably had a lot to do with the glorious weather!
The site itself is in a secluded valley on the edge of Exmoor (landscape is more rolling hills of Devon than Exmoor). The site is divided into 4 separate fields which seem to cater for different people; although this was probably by natural selection rather than design.
The first field (which we were in) was quiet and close to the better of the two facilities. The second and third were more (large) family orientated and the fourth for large groups.
Pitches are not marked and the site itself is so large that you have loads of space which is great!
The toilet block near field 1 is pretty good, with plenty of hot water and decent showers and sinks. Never visited the other block near field 4, but a number of people came across from there saying that they were poor, no more than a shed.
For some great day trips, head to Lynmouth / Lynton, Watersmeet or Dunster and Dunster Castle. Further a field Docton Mill does a superb Devon Cream Team and the whole Hartland area is worth exploring, but keep well clear of Clovelly, which is nothing more than an overpriced tourist trap if travelling by car. If you can park further away and walk in (Costal Path), it may be worth it.
Back to Westermill, the only real negative is the price. At £21 - £24 per night for a family of 3 with 1 dog it is expensive, but lacking in a number of areas. Toilets were not cleaned regularly (once a day, if you are lucky). Grass is cut, but not removed so cuttings end up in the toilet blocks and your tent.
Toilet paper was provided, but then not. The farm shop is ok for essentials, but not really a farm shop (don't expect fresh meat - only frozen - and no fresh veg either). For the price, they need to try a little harder.
