This site is a real gem.
Four fields, all adjoining a truly beautiful river that gently flows amongst ancient stones and moss-covered trees. We spent hours with the children playing with friends, old and new, in the water, on rope swings, catching tadpoles and playing hide and seek.
Fires are allowed in the fourth field with logs available. The children had toasted marshmallows and the fire (with one or two drinks) kept the grown-ups happy late into the evening.
The site is well organised and the facilities are fine.
It is a beautiful area to walk in. Don't bother going to Blue Anchor or Minehead if you're looking for a quality beach experience. The pub in Exford is great - the carvery for Sunday lunch was excellent.
As other reviews have mentioned, this site tends to get busy at peak times - we've been twice and will certainly be back - but it's well worth booking.

This was our first camping 'expedition' as a family. We have 2 boys aged 8 and 4. I found this site after searching on the internet and it looked ideal for what we had in mind, not too far away (we are from the Chew Valley between Bristol and Bath) and according to the reviews I read very relaxed and child friendly.
The journey down was ok except the bit of off-road I did (borrowed sat-nav!) we arrived about 6:30pm on friday the 21st may 2010. Met the son of the owner @ reception who informed us that we could pitch where ever we wanted, except field 3 because this was booked for a wedding! We were a little disappointed because this was the one we had decided on after reading reviews and looking on 'google Earth'.
No matter, we set up in field 2 which is closer to the main toilet and shower block. Because we only stayed for 2 nights we did not explore the local area or use the sites facilities to the maximum. But I must say it was fantastic. There was plenty of hot water (solar powered!), and the block was spotless the whole weekend.
Our 2 boys played in the river and enjoyed walking for a few miles off site along a path that follows the river. The wedding party in the next field and the large group in our field didn't make much noise and the whole atmosphere was one of relaxation.
We had to go to the reception to pay, and I didn't think this was expensive for a weekend away, we would have spent the same or more taking the kids out locally!
All 4 of the fields back onto the river with a slight slope down, the grass is kept short and is lovely to walk on barefoot. I would think if the weather was bad this review might be slightly different but the weather does what it does.
The site itself is one I would highly recommend but may get very busy during peak times so early booking would(i think) be essential. All in all I would recommend this site 100% and we will be returning with friends very soon.

Back to nature! Over the years I have been to a lot of camp sites but this has been the most relaxing laid back site of them all! I phoned to check there was space and was told yes just come on down. We were met by a very pleasant lady who had the time to have a chat and give us information about the site and said we could camp where we wanted.
We set up right next to the stream on a level field where my seven year old son spent many a happy hour with his fishing net trying to catch are tea. The toilets and showers were only a short walk away and they were always clean.
The site soon had a lot of other campers and the overall feeling was of a relaxed atmosphere. This is a great quiet site with just the basic amenities that you need for a perfect stay.
The only noise if you can call it that at night was just the odd sheep, cow and some birds. For me the mornings were the best waking up to the birds early morning chorus.
Minehead and Lynton are just a short drive away and there are lots of walks on the moors. If you want to get away from it all and have some peace and quiet then I highly recommend this site. I will definitely be going back again.

We have stayed at this site previously and loved its wonderful location, however our visit this time was different. We had to pay for dogs and children under 3 and well as our campervan so it got quite pricey. The showers were cold as the boiler had packed up and the campsite was heaving! It seems to be a popular site with large groups and we came back after an outing to discover that we could only just attach our van back to its awning as a group of about 20 had arrived and their guy ropes were intertwined with ours. We couldn't find any recycling facilities and the bins were overflowing. I would say that this site has been overtaken by its own success, go if you are out of season as it is beautiful

I stayed here for 2 nights in September with my boyfriend and our dog and we loved it.
The location is idyllic, very rural and wild and perfect access to the moor. I usually favour working farms for camping and try to avoid campsites with clubhouses and playgrounds etc, as I am generally looking for solitude when I camp, and this site did the job perfectly. It was almost empty when we were there and we had the choice of 4 large fields to pitch in. We chose a spot by the stream which was lovely to wake up and paddle in and to have breakfast alongside (the dog loved it too, there was no pressure to keep her on the lead, the owners were very relaxed and laid back, which is always nice for dog owners).
Facilities were basic but adequate; a few spiders in the rafters and the whole area is pitch black at night, but this all adds to the fun for me. The farm shop was closed when we visited but in summer it is possible to buy fresh meat and vegetables from them. The White Heart is a lovely country pub in Exford which is dog friendly and with great food (can fully recommend the steak and ale pie made with local beef).
I would definitely re-visit this site if I was staying in the area again! Truly magnificent walks and views on Exmoor and well worth a visit.

We just spent a fab 5 days camping in field 3 and can't wait to go back next year. It was a tad expensive, especially the car rate of £2.50 a night! It would be nice to feel like they aren't nabbing you for everything. But, saying that everything was fantastic, Charlotte was very welcoming and the whole family ready and willing to help. The shower block on field 3 and 4 did the job and it was wonderful to have hot showers. I hear the other shower block off field 1 was top notch, and I did see people walking down the drive in their bath robes to go there, but hut was more than fine. The block was kept clean and except for first day, was kept topped up the loo rolls. The shop was open a couple hours a day, which was useful, meat was expensive but if not many of you, then it was good for treat. There is a freezer for your ice blocks, fee donated to charity.Nice touch.
We camped as I said in the best field.3.Right next to the river which is shallow enough to not fill the wellies, the children had a ball of a time building dams and generally getting soaked, we learnt quickly to don swimsuits even if it was raining ! They made friend with 'smelly nose' and 'huffer' the escapeee bulls, they thought it very exciting rounding up the escaped bulls tuesday night. And while on the subject of nature, watch out for 'spikey sid' the hedgehog who makes 2.00 am visits to ransack caketins ! Yes he can actually open and devour contents. But he makes enough noise to wake you if you feel mean and don't want the contents eaten. ; )
Anyway this is a great area to explore, my sister, a usual excellent navigator, didn't make such a good job on the moors and we often had a 'detour tour on the moor' drive which we found many an amazing place. We did do the usual touristy bits too, Dartington glass factory, Cheddar caves, Lynton, tarr steps. Meander from Withypool, four miles each way mostly along river, kiddies loved it.
This is a lovely quiet campsite, nothing but old benny the bull who didn't like the dark, but he hushed up once light started ; ) This isn't the campsite if you want any form of entertainment, which is ideal for us. It is away from it all kind of place with the luxury of shower blocks, farm shop and a very nice young man who came to our rescue when our gas ran out half way through cooking dinner ! he opened up shop and replaced it,even though he was just sitting down to his own dinner.

A good, solid down-to-earth site.
Spent three (sunnyish) days here this week and really enjoyed it. You come in through the farm entrance drive and basically there are four fields to the left of the track which are all bordered by the river Exe. You choose your field and then where you want to pitch, which I much prefer over allocated pitches.
There was plenty of space and the whole site was laid out well, with a reasonable price charged. And the (free) showers were also always hot.
There are no electric hook-ups which is also fine by my and a no-radio-rule which was adhered to by all as far as I could tell.
The shop was also good although a little limited on opening times and the situation was excellent for exploring Exmoor (although it's not really in walking distance of a shop or pub etc).
There was no children's play area, however the children (8, 5 and 2) were never bored as there are nooks and crannies to play in, open ground, animals to see and of course the river to mess around in (field 1 has the river fenced off in case you're worried about your liitle ones and the track is up a bank so it's hard for them to stray that way too).
I would definitely recommend this site and will go back there next time I'm in that area.

Visited this site for 6 days and it is a lovely setting. The river Exe runs straight thought he site and there are four fields to chose from. We stayed in field 3 which has low banks and walk in access to the river. My kids loved the river building dams and paddling about, this field is definitely the most picturesque. You may choose where to pitch and there are no marked pitches the site is very natural. Everyone was quiet by about ten. The area is beautiful and quiet obviously there is no road noise but this does mean a long drive in on single track road ( which may not be a problem for most but I found it stressful). Little shop selling all the basics which you need as everything shuts at five and nothing is open on Sunday, not so sure about the home produced sausages. As usual the break was marred by bad weather. My only real criticism is that the toilets were not cleaned and replenished more than once a day which was not enough and the toilet/shower block in field 3 was very basic the other block in field 1 was far superior. There were many occasions when the block ran out of hot water and these things in my view are critical especially when weather turns bad. But I would definitely go back again. Also the food in the Exmoor Inn was excellent and a welcome retreat.

This was out first camping trip and although the weather was AWFUL we still had a wonderful time and would thoroughly recommend the site.
It is a very laid back site that lets people get on with it which we found really nice. The toilets and showers were very clean (although the ladies is round the back and because the light was broken outside it was very dark so remember a torch), their was toilet paper and a hairdryer for the ladies too. The washing up area was great (their was spare washing up liquid) and the freezer for ice blocks asked for a 20p donation to their chosen charity. The shop had good supplies and their was a payphone to use aswell.
The site was truly picturesque and they encouraged no radios so all you could hear was the river, cows and for us the rain!
Their were nice walks around the site through the farm.
You really are in the middle of nowhere so for a relaxing or walking holiday its great but you do use up a huge amount of petrol if your going backwards and forwards.
The only thing that confused us slightly was in the really well stocked visitor centre, their was a rhyme saying don't camp by the river it could flood, but they have photos of people camping by it on their website. I think tho tis was probably so that people knew about it and could make their own decision.
We would thoroughly recommend this site and will definitely be back.

This was a really picturesque site with the river flowing along through the fields and great countryside around it. I camped in field 3 (to avoid the groups in field 4, but forgot that noise travels!) - I think fields 1 and 2 were quieter.
I was told to pitch my tent wherever I wanted to - plenty of room when I camped, but not sure how busy this site gets in the school holidays.
There were 2 toilet/shower blocks with dishwashing facilities. The one nearest the farm was the plusher of the two, with washing up bowls and drainers for the washing up, but the facilities in the other block were fine. I didn't have to queue for a shower on Saturday morning, but did on Sunday - and there was no hot water left.
There were some great walks around the farm for me and my dog - they had some walk leaflets which you could borrow from reception.
The on-site shop is open a couple of times a day (morning and evening) and seems to sell the basics, plus frozen meat. Exford is a couple of miles away, which is where the nearest shop and pubs are, so I think most people stayed on site during the evenings.
The only negative experience I had was being bitten by midges in the evenings - maybe because I was camping by the river.
I would definitely go back again as it was a friendly, picturesque site, but I would choose a spot away from the river and possibly in fields 1 or 2 as they seemed to be quieter.
