We recently stopped at Westermill for a 2 night duration on campsite 4.
Westermill is a working farm and there are animals in the surrounding fields. In the field next to campsite 4, there was a herd of cows. The River Exe also runs through the campsite and has a beautiful sound as you can imagine. In fact, the views and scenery are probably the best thing about Westermill itself as it really is idyllic. Leave your tent on a clear night and stargaze - for people from towns like myself, you will be in awe as there is no light pollution.
There is a shop on site called the Shippon Shop which is a nice touch, although quite expensive, but you will find lots of camping food essentials if you need anything. They also stock wines and beers. They sell much of their own produce such as burgers and sausages which are really tasty and well worth trying one evening or for a breakfast.
I found this campsite to be particularly basic amongst the ones that we have visited this summer. This is for a number of reasons. We were attracted to Campsite 4 as it is the field that permits campfires but we did not know that it also seems to permit large groups of supervised young people, possibly Duke of Edinburgh students (there were two groups on site when we camped) and although not rowdy in anyway it was clear that this is who this field and facilities were geared towards. If we'd have known this, we would have probably opted for field 1 or 2 as previous reviewers have suggested. Field 1 & 2's toilet facilities were also better, more modern and cleaner, so I would have definitely suggested camping there for that reason, although I was confused as to whether toilet paper was provided as initially it was, but then appeared to run out.
There are also basic washing up facilities, a fridge/freezer which they ask 20p for you to use in order to put in the meter, and there are washing machines although again quite expensive to use. Hot water is free. There didn't appear to be any plug points for hairdryers etc however if you like this sort of luxury.
Westermill is located in a very rural area so there are plenty of walking opportunities for campers who enjoy those activities. In terms of local places of interest, there are some small touristy towns, but we ventured further afield to Minehead which is about 16 miles away. Here you can enjoy the best of typical British seasides. The nearest town however is about 2 miles away.
One other word of warning, remember to take Fly repellent/citronella candles as there were lots of midges around at night. We didn't do this, and our camping experience would have been much improved if we did!
Overall, if you like back-to-basics, no frills style camping this is for you. Prepare to be taken away from reality and dropped right in the middle of no where. If that's your sort of thing then go for it!

What a lovely campsite. Not over organised and so beautiful. Camped in field 2 by the river and the sound of running water was so relaxing. You will need midge spray but that's the only downside.
Had plenty of hot water in the toilet block and although basic were clean and mostly fine and also free! Was pleased to see the hot water supplied by solar panels.
There is an incline from the field up to the shower block and this could be difficult for someone with walking difficulties but not for most people. Will definitely be back.

We visited this site with 3 families and had a great time. The river Axe flows through the site and on good hot days the water is a great place for the kids to play (plenty of tadpoles and fish to interest the kids). The site itself is very flat, especially considering that it is in the bottom of a valley.
We camped in field 4 that allows campfires. There are a number of firepits with surrounds that work very well and many marshmallows were cooked.
The field next to ours had a small herd of aberdeen angus cows and calves which our 1 year old adored watching and the meat can also be bought in the site shop but watch out as it only opens for two 1hr slots each day.
The facilities are probably the worst feature of the site, although not bad the showers are normally cold in the block nearest field 4 and they are fairly basic, a little more work on these wouldn't go amiss.
Overall a great site, the staff are very friendly, we had loads of space and the kids loved it.

We had a very enjoyable stay at this very well organized campsite. There are four fields which each have a large level pitching area part-way down a valley slope with a small river at the bottom. It looks like this provides good drainage, but it was hot & dry while we were there, so I cannot guarantee that this is the case.
If you want to be near the toilet block, you want to be in field 1. Anyone who has problems walking should bear in mind that there is a bit of a slope to walk up on the way to the loos. Sanitation is good: I only have two small criticisms on that front: first is that there is little to keep clothes dry when using the showers, the other is that the toilet floors can get wet (runoff from the showers?). Both of these seem not to be unusual in my experience, but at least the shower cubicles have plenty of space, which helps to mitigate the first of these.
The only other thing that I would comment on is that the Sheep dogs are a little curious around the tents: worth mentioning if you have any problems with dogs, or need to dispose of food waste (although we saw no evidence of bad K9 behaviour).
All in all a great site.

We visited Westermill in mid-April so it was very quiet as really off-season. The site itself is stunning, 4 level fields along the river, with camp fires permitted in the 4th field and the 1st field being secured from the river by a fence, so ideal for those with younger kiddies who may worry about safety. The river is a great attraction, very shallow and the kids loved paddling in it and looking at the water life. The views are amazing and it’s a great family friendly site with lots of wildlife, and as Spring when we went, lambs which the kids could visit.
There are no children play facilities, but none are needed given the size of the fields, the trees, the stream and access to the countryside. No electric hook-ups if that’s important to you. A very laid back site with no marked pitches or restrictions on unit size, arrival/departure times etc. Not sure if that’s the same in high season when it would be busy? Access roads very narrow but adds to that getting away from it all feeling.
The location is great and within easy reach of the seaside and the moors, small shop in nearby Exford but seems a longer trip to the coast would be needed for a major shop.
We were warned beforehand that the second toilet block would not be open but not that the freezers would be out of action which was a bit inconvenient, but not critical for us. The shop was also closed; but looks like it sells the basics when open. We were also overcharged as they forgot to account for the deposit we had paid – but this was quickly remedied and I believe a genuine mistake. Our only complaint would be the upkeep of the facilities that were open. In the 4 days we were there it looks like the toilet/shower blocks were neither cleaned nor replenished. The ladies had no soap and hardly any toilet paper when we arrived; the gents fared slightly better initially in terms of consumables but these were depleted quickly. The blocks were unheated, and I think would struggle with showers and washing up facilities if the site was full. Plenty of hot water though. The laundry facilities seemed to consist of some steel tubs.
It was a great break, the site was wonderful; personally I’d avoid in high season but would certainly return for a quick off-peak break. If the owners could ensure regular upkeep of facilities and better customer service it would score near perfect marks.

This is a fantastic site in a great setting. We pitched in field 1 which has limited access to the river through a heavy gate, the gate making it perfectly safe for toddlers. The main part of the field is nice & flat & it has easy access to the main facilities. The field sizes seemed to go up in number order with 1 being the smallest & 4 being the largest.
The showers, etc that we used were very good with ample toilets & 3 showers in both the mens & ladies blocks. We went in the main school holidays which meant the site was very busy, but never had a problem with queuing for showers.
There was plenty of room on the site, despite it being busy & never seemed to be overcrowded.
The walks from the site were good & maps of the farms walks could be bought from the shop for a small charge. The shop itself was good for the basics like milk, cobs, etc. The store in Exford was excellent & there is also a Tesco in Minehead (& soon to be a Morrisons too).
Unlike most people we cannot recommend the White Horse in Exford as we has a very poor meal there, however the London Inn in Watchet was fantastic, good food, friendly staff & very welcoming.
All in all a very enjoyable time was had & would definitely go back.

We spent two nights here in the 'family field' with two toddlers and would certainly visit again.
There is a nice atmosphere to the place and we liked the fact that the kids could run off and more or less be visible all the time.
The whole site is alongside the river, but the family field is fenced off so no worries for the kids. The next two fields have easy access to the river so we just wandered up there for a paddle and to do a bit of exploring.
There is a shop on the site which sells basic provisions and some local sausages and burgers which was quite handy.
The village of Exford is a couple of miles walk but flat, and there is a park there as well. There is a cafe that backs onto the park so we could grab something to eat whilst the kids ran around - easier than a pub garden!
Midges were quite bad on a warm, muggy evening so take some citronella candles.

I've just returned from a two night stay at this fantastic campsite, tucked away in the heart of Exmoor.
I took my 3yo son, and 70yo mother (so a bit like having two kids!). They both found it superb, relaxing and loved the 'get away from it all' nature of the location.
The site was superbly kept, and well managed, with clean showers and toilets, and washing up facilities.
The whole nature of the place is very free spirited.
The welcome was a little brusque, but you do get a little used to that with certain campsites. When phoning to book previously I was curtly told that they were trying to dish up Sunday lunch. In my opinion, the paying customer is always a priority if you're going to answer the phone to them.
However, it's not as if you're sharing a tent, or going on holiday with the owners, and so that made no impact on the enjoyment of the weekend.
Minehead is close enough for the larger shops, and Woolacombe has a fantastic beach, with lots of pretty little coastal villages tucked away between the two.
Access to the site is down some pretty windy roads, which makes it even more desirable as a get away location.
I can't comment on the shop as I didn't go there for the duration of my visit.
The dawn chorus of cows and sheep was superb, and there's a lot to see and do on the campsite should you wish to leave the car alone for a couple of days.
Overall, a superb site, and one that I would hope to revisit again sometime soon.

The Camp Site at Westermill is second to none. We stayed in the 3rd field by the river and it could not be bettered. Camping amongst the fields of farm animals was really good. However, our welcome to the site at the Reception Office was frankly unfriendly, as were the staff in the campsite shop which was a real shame. I suppose we are just like the fields of sheep, just a revenue stream but a friendly greeting and a smile doesn't cost anything.
They were missing a real opportunity with the shop. There are no shops for 2 miles or so and the shop did not cash in on this although the freezer full of farm meat was good and the sausages were supreme but the very limited opening hours and the extremely limited array of goods meant that we drove into Exford for provisions.
The washing up/washing facilities were excellent for our very quiet off-season stay. The toilets and showers looked brand new for this season and all worked well. The block serving fields 3 and 4 has one shower for the gents and two for ladies. This is not enough for any summer weekend or August. Even when we were staying in quiet June, we had times when we queued up for showers. The week we stayed, there was no soap in the dispenser which meant that a bar of soap had to be taken up with us on every visit to the toilet which did become a family joke but it was slightly annoying.
The main facilities area near the entrance had more showers and toilets, washing up area, laundry and also a freezer for ice blocks which was really handy.
Moans out the way, the red farm walk (instructions leaflet from the shop) was highly entertaining! We mucked up the start and the middle but managed to follow the last part to the letter. Beautiful countryside and a good way to take a walk around the farmland.
Exford is a sleepy Exmoor village and we loved it that way. We walked there one day which took about an hour at a steady pace. The White Horse was brilliant. We had a few meals here which were very tasty and the cider and beer was great. The staff were really friendly and welcoming. The Stores on the Green were also very accommodating and we got our camping supplies here on several occasions.
We whole-heartedly recommend Westermill Farm in off-peak times. The surrounding countryside is stunning and the facilities are great when the site is only half full.

Stayed over the May bank holiday where the site had the misfortune of their boiler packing up which meant no hot water for 2 days.
Although it was very busy it didn't feel overcrowded and the condition of the site was nice. Our son liked the farm setting with the animals to see. There are some really nice walks around the area; great for walkers.
There's a small shop on site; had all the basics.
If you like the sound of farm animals in the morning then this is the place for you.
The river that runs through the campsite is wonderful for kids to play in, and nice for cooling the feet off in hot weather.
The only downside was having to pay for children (both under 3 yrs old), this means I won't be visiting again as it made the weekend rather expensive. Would have been nice to be given a reduction for the lack of hot water (as having to use our own gas for washing and doing the dishes).
