Just got back from Glencote caravan park spending 4 nights. From arrival to departure the owners sons are the most polite and helpful young men that you will ever come across this makes this caravan park what it is, Dad you should be very proud of them. The site is clean as are the toilet blocks/showers plenty of ducks to feed and fishing is great too. The last night that we were there we had the most horrific thunder storm but caused no problems for driving over the grass in the morning as it is a well drained park. We only live a few miles from from the site and cannot believe that we have not been before, and it will not be the last. As mentioned in a previous review the television and mobile phone reception is not the best but why do people go away for a break ? my self I go to get away from this so get a life.
Looking forward to the next visit. Thank you

On arrival we were note shown to our pitch. ( Perhaps because it was raining). The pitch is hardstanding on slabs not graval so difficult to put up an awning. The grass is kept cut nice but a bit boggy in areas. Not much of a play area just a grassed area with goal posts and base ball net. Toilet block requires updating and could be a lot cleaner. States on web site and a sign in laundry window that milk, papers etc delivered daily at 9. 30a. M. Which did not happen. It is in a lovely spot by canal and railway but did not have a warm welcoming feel about it and staff not seen about much.

As we camp primarily to go walking (and like to be able to do so straight from our camper van) Glencote ticks all the boxes. This is because you can very easily head off north, south, east or west and - as it has easy access to the canal towpath (which - for most parts - is parallel to the river and Churnet Valley Heritage Railway) and is near to several nature reserves - it's very straightforward to find circular routes of between 5 to 12 miles.
From the initial telephone contact to the warm welcome on arrival (when it was nice to be guided to our pitch) the site wardens were very friendly and helpful.
The site itself is well laid out - with slabbed hard standing pitches - and, even though the toilet/shower/washing block may be a little old, it has everything you need, it's clean and well heated. The whole site is clearly well maintained and we were told (and could see) there is an ongoing programme of improvements works under way.
We will definitely be back soon as we so impressed with the walking in the area and the relaxing nature of the site.

Have just arrived back from Glencote and went on a recommendation of a fellow caravanner.
It was all he claimed, very clean and tidy with toilet blocks that were as near perfect as could be achieved.
The site manager is a real star. Helping site the van and offering to move the paving flags if we needed to accommodate the pegging of our awning.
Luckily there were plenty of already drilled holes and gaps in edges as to be unnecessary to move them again. But he came back to check we were ok later on in the day.
The grass is well tended and the site is a really lovely landscaped one with a fishing pool with gardens around it. Lovely for entertaining our visiting granddaughter. Fish and duck feeding.
The area is very nice and there are lovely walks on the canal bank with a very convenient pub called the Boat Inn, nearby, which provided good mid day and evening food as well as great beer.
There are two other pubs not very far away along the canal, the Red lion which is about a mile away, passed by road on way into site if coming from the south. And the Black Lion, about 2 miles in the opposite direction on the canal and best used in the daytime as a walk back along the canal at night time would be a bit daunting.
The enthusiasts railway which runs alongside only operates at certain times and we missed out as it was running on the day we arrived and we didn't realise the limited times until the day later. It would be wise to check up on it if that is the reason for going here. It did pass by on several occasions when the workers were doing maintenance jobs. So viewing is easy enough.
The site managers are both extremely helpful and pleasant to chat with as well as being a mine of information.
I would recommend this site for anyone looking for a short or long stay and living as we do within close proximity as it was a very easy to reach location and well worth a visit.

Just returned from an amazingly relaxing break at Glencote. I've honestly slept in until nearly 9am every day during my stay there feeling refreshed and chilled out, at home I awake at 6am or before without fail!
What a tranquil setting, amazing really as the approach takes you past a large industrial estate, but luckily this emits neither sounds or smells, in fact the only noise you may encounter, apart from other Campers, is the occasional steam train or the sheep, calves and a few pigs/piglets in the field on the other side of the valley.
THE GOOD - Warm showers(push button system), clean loos, sinks and washing-up areas. Yes they're all looking dated but all functioning well and in very good condition.
The fishing pool is brilliant, I had 12 fish in 90mins. Good coutryside walks along the canal with a nice pub in either direction.
The steam railway station is very pretty, as is The Boat Inn, both 150m down a country road, and both of these overlook the canal and a river.
Site Wardens really are lovely and friendly and will do anything to help, I did feel they were a bit over worked at times. Leek town is only about 5 mins drive away, so if you need a supermarket, you're sorted!
THE BAD - No TV in certain pitches, even satellite, poor phone signal on some networks (Vodafone), so be prewarned and take a book, a DVD player and a crossword puzzle, or you may even want to talk to each other to pass the time. The play area is frequently waterlogged so football etc is impossible at times.
No ballgames rule needs to be enforced by Site Manager as I had football jammed under my car & hitting my 'van every day! Maybe it should be made clear when booking.
The road behind the site is used as a high speed short-cut by locals and creates some noise.
Summary - If you want to chill out & unwind, stroll in fresh air in rolling countryside, forget the phone & TV this's brilliant.
OR - If you want to get away from home but then sadly sit in you van watching TV & texting whilst your children are outside kicking a ball about my suggestion is that you stay at home or pitch elsewhere as you won't appreciate what Glencote has to offer.

Lovely place, great base for exploring the peak district. The park has a great fishing lake, well stocked. The owners were very friendly and helpful. The surrounding area is lovely with the steam train going past and the canal just 5 mins away, where we rode our bikes along tow path to several pubs. Castros Mexictan has great food.
The showers and toilets although very clean were a bit dated.
Would a trip to Bakewell and the Derwent canal.
Overall I would highly recommend this caravan park.

£26. 50 a night for 2 Adults 1 Child, No TV, Radio or Mobile phone signals during our recent stay, not good when we have our Granddaughter, need to keep in touch with her parents.
Have stayed on the site previous. Approx 130 miles from home.
1st visit 2 years ago, was not aware of the lack of signal, it was quiet on site, so managed to plug into one of the dishes, with our free view box, as it rained all week needed some kind of music TV. On this occasion was told by wardens to book backing onto the railway, if we return, you can get signals on these plots.
2nd visit 1 year ago, made a booking asked for a pitch backed onto railway, perfect TV Radio Mobile phone, we had the Granddaughter, we could keep in touch.
3rd Visit booked a pitch backed onto the railway, was told by the owner, dishes all round the site now, can get signal anywhere, this is not the case, no dishes all round, again No TV limited radio, and mobile signal, see other reviews, and not pitched backing onto the railway, beware if you are told about the dishes, they belong to the residents on site 99% of them have dishes.
Award winning site, not sure how, the site is very clean and well looked after, toilet facilities are dated and not so clean on this visit.
Would I revisit, possibly not, over priced for facilities on site. School holidays and the ice cream van only came on Saturday and Sunday, previous years every day, and it was hot.
Good points, lovely cycle ride along the canal, pubs that serve food in both directions, the Holly Bush has a large children's playground and serves good food, and real Ale, the Black Lion serves good Ale, not tried the food. Walking distance to the Boat Public House, serving good Ale and food, and the Chernet Valley Railway, the Steam train is a good day out.
WiFi available on site at cost, we use a T Mobile (EE) pointer which we can use anywhere, BUT yes you guessed it not on this site. I refused to pay for WiFi on this occasion as I have a monthly contract already.
Just a reminder if you use this site, across the road, there are normally loads of pigs and piglets, they love any food.

The site owner or manager could not have been more helpful. The manager did everything to help including providing us with a freeview box and connecting us to a satellite dish as even with the latest gear could not even get a radio station never mind a tv station. No mobile signal on the either my wife's or my own mobile. This was a real disadvantage as we needed to keep in touch with a daughter at home. The entrance to the site is disappointing as you drive past a number of industrial units. We stayed on the 'sister' site in Cheshire which was absolutely beautiful. We feel that the descriptions of Glencote as given on the leaflet are misleading. It is not as spacious as it is made out to be. There is no dog walk. However the kindness and help provided by the manager was second to none and in some way made up for the rest of the shortcomings of the site. Our best outing was to the Roaches which is a beautiful hill walk about 7 or 8 miles away. Would we return ? Well we are members of the caravan club and I have to say that the facilities on Glencote do not match up to those of a club site so we will now only use CC club sites and CLs from now on.

When we arrived at the site we got a friendly welcome and was given a plot right by the railway track. Not good you might think, but the opposite was true! It is not a commercial line, it services the local steam train from the nearby station. Fantastic - like going back in time.
The staff were very helpful. The site is very well kept. But the toilets and showers, whilst clean, are dated.
An ice-cream van turned up on the site which was very brilliant. We ate out at the Boat Inn which is a five minute walk away. They have a choice of real ales, and although the menu is not extensive, it is adequate and most importantly good food and really inexpensive.
My only gripe relates to the price. At £24 per night, I thought it was a tad expensive. That said, I would probably go back because the site is well run.

Our second visit to Glencote and once again a great time had by all.
You will struggle to find a warmer welcome or more helpful hosts.
The site is well kept and clean as are the shower block and washing up areas. The showers could be a wee bit more modern and the push button showers could stay on a bit longer but you know what, we don't care. With a steam train running through the site, a heritage station three minutes walk away along with a friendly pub, The Boat, just over the bridge and if you take advantage of the walking guides which are available from the site office you can find yourself at The Black Lion where you can sit and watch steam trains and narrow boats go by with a very good pint.
So thanks again to everyone at Glencote for making a much needed weekend such a pleasure. I'm going to rate everything at 10 out of 10 because, as I said earlier, the overall effect far outweighs little niggles like the shower timer. (i started camping in the 70's when a cold running tap felt like luxury. )
