A very quiet, well-run campsite with meticulously clean facilities during this difficult time.
We would most definitely stay here again and recommend to others.

The Site location was excellent with views of Winsford Moor.
Brilliant walks from the campsite including walking to Tarr steps.

Very scenic location on a working farm. Facilities very clean and all Covid safety regulations adhered to.
Lots of space and the moor just a few steps away so perfect for walking and exercising dogs.
The village pub is within walking distance but unfortunately wasn't open during our stay.

What a great find this lovely little site is. Right in the heart of Exmoor with easy walks direct from the site.
If you read the website descriptions of the site and the farm you will get a good feel of just how special this place is.
I am writing this during our 3 day stay and there are mohos, caravans and tents and the site is probably only at 30% capacity due no doubt to the ongoing Covid situation. However, it is clear that even at a higher occupancy level this peaceful campsite would not feel crowded.
The small facilities block has all that you need and is spotless. The showers are very powerful and have variable heat control with plenty of really hot water if that's your preference. Oh, and they are free - no annoying coin boxes here.
There is also free WiFi too with decent enough signal strength for googling.
This site is also good for young families as there is a nice little play area.
We will definitely return as there are so many more walks we have still to do. We may even bring our bikes next time as there are several people here that head off on their bikes each morning.
Finally, I met both the owners (names have escaped me) who are really welcoming and who so obviously love this lovely farm.

This site joined a few all-time top favourites. It was definitely one to return to and this year our planned holiday to the Swiss Alps was cancelled and this will provide an excellent alternative for a quiet location with fab walking and views!
We particularly love an evening stroll from the farm onto the moor enjoying the skyscape as the sun sets with a magical feel of being in such an expanse of the natural world in the twilight.
Winsford is a lovely village and the cream teas are recommended. Bear in mind the “mile” is steep - I recommend the scenic route to walk to and from the village rather than the very steep road.
But it is the altitude and moor access which makes Halse Farm such a wonderful location. I love their sheep too.
Good clean facilities and Wi-if and very welcoming.

What a fabulous find. We wanted somewhere not too far from home so we could avoid bank holiday traffic, and have found a real gem.
Exmoor holds a big piece of my heart and waking in a tent on a foggy morning shortly followed by bright sunshine is a real treat.
The facilities are immaculate, as was the whole site with plenty of space even on a bank holiday weekend, also a lovely playground for children.
Thank you for allowing us to stay on your beautiful farm.

Third time at Halse Farm. Normally I would go there for astronomy as its got a clear horizon and being at altitude (around 1000') tends to get better atmosphere for seeing. Its always very tranquil and quiet. Quite a smallish site so never too many people. This time round as we were going in June its pointless for astronomy as the sky is never dark enough - we were there for hiking and walking and rest.
The campsite is on a hill that rises up from Winsford Village (birthplace of Aneurin Bevin). The village is very picturesque with a charming tea room serving up scones, yummy cakes and cream teas. Well worth a visit. From the campsite look North East and you will see a dimple on the top of a hill - that's Dunkerly Beacon the highest point of Exmoor and its approx 10 miles away. Best to drive there though as the walking route there and back would be well over 18 miles.
The campsite has been upgraded since we were last there with upgraded shower/toilet facilities. There is also a clothes washing facility with a washer and dryer for £4. 50 per wash. An outside pair of sinks for dishwashing is adjacent plus an information office which is unmanned but has plenty of brochures and local information.
The campsite has two locations for freshwater and dumping waste water plus plenty of bins to get rid of your waste.
Tish down at the farmhouse is very friendly as is her husband and will help out with any minor issues you may have. There is also a small store next to the farmhouse which has a fridge freezer for you to store cold foods and freeze any ice bricks you may need.
The campsite is slightly above the farm itself which is a working sheep farm and Tish and her husband will allow you to have a look around when they are working if you ask beforehand. The views at the site are beautiful and also on one side they have recently renovated the hedgerow and reseeded it with various wild plants. In June it was alive with Lupins and other wildflower varieties which when combined with the spectacular views makes the whole site very attractive.
There is a small village shop in Winsford but it is only open in the mornings Mon-Fri- best to get supplies at either Dulverton (about 7 miles away) or Minehead which has three huge supermarkets on its approach.
The roads round the area are very tiny and petrol stations are few and far between so make sure you have plenty of fuel before going into the Exmoor area. Dulverton is the nearest petrol station but has only a single pump and its not always open. Minehead is the nearest 24 hour we found.
There's lots to go look at in the area - Minehead is close by (the fish and chip takeaway nearest the station has superb fish and chips - among the best I have ever tasted) plus its the terminus for the West Somerset Railway worth a look or even a trip down the line (longest trust owned railway in the UK). If you like walking and hiking Tish at the farmhouse will lend you a laminated map for local routes and the Tarr Steps (local beauty spot) is around a 10 mile round trip from the farmhouse across some of the most beautiful countryside you will see in the UK - all over Exmoor you will find wild ponies. Unfortunately in June the horseflies that come with the ponies were out in force and believe me when you get bit by one of those you stay bit - I clocked up 24+ bites in a three day period of walking. To be fair this was a unique event due to an exceptionally warm May and June and even round Reigate there are swarms of the things in the countryside.
Dunster is nearby and has a beautiful castle and grounds and all over Exmoor there are beautiful villages to wander through and some great pubs doing good food. Some great places to walk and drive - take the roads slowly as some are very restricted and don't rely on a sat-nav overmuch - ours kept getting us into roads that were little better than donkey tracks. Best to follow the road signage as it tends to keep you on the bigger roads.
The whole experience has been wonderful the three times we have been there and I would recommend the site for anyone looking for some peace and quiet away from the hurly burly. The views are lovely, there's almost no noise at night (or in the day for that matter) - its just incredibly peaceful.
Something to watch and be geared for is the weather on Exmoor is very changeable - it can be very windy up there at times. The times we have been on Exmoor the weather has been extremely hot during the day but the temperature can collapse at night and become VERY cold. Cold enough to need heavyweight sleeping bags - ours are geared down to -4' and are ok - any lighter and you might get a bit chilly if the weather turns.
Normal camp site rules apply - keep the noise down, don't burn the grass with disposable BBQs etc but the site is dog friendly for any dog owners.
We will be back in September as the astronomy season kicks off again - Exmoor has some of the darkest skies in the UK. For any non-astronomers going early or late in the year - get out of bed at about 3 am and look up. The view of the stars will astound you and you will probably be able to see the Milky Way - now sadly lost due to urbanisation and streetlights being on 24/7.
