An excellent site. We stayed for two nights at Easter. The toilet block is spotless.
We pitched our three small tents in the top field on a bit of a slope, but not enough to cause problems.
Walking onto the moorland took less than a minute.
Very dark at night, ideal for stargazing. We took a large telescope and had two very good nights viewing.
The lanes around the site can be a bit narrow, but if you want wild seclusion, this is the place.
Eggs are sold at reception, probably the best omelette I've ever made :-)

We stayed here for four nights in the October half term. The site was in a lovely location we were able to stand at the tent and see the wild ponies grazing on the hill in the morning. Facilities were clean and there was plenty of hot water, also the shower block was heated which was a big plus. We were the only tent here and there were 3/4 caravans, I don't know whether I would like to stay in high season as there were 4 toilets in the ladies and 2 showers and 2 men's showers and I believe 3 toilets (I didn't go in to look) so if the site was busy there would be queues (they have 20 EHU's plus another field for tents) Washing up facilities were good and clean.
The little shop at Winsford was a gem their pasties are lovely. The pub down the road was highly recommended. 10 minutes drive to Dulverton which has a Co-op and independent butchers and green grocers also the Exmoor vistors centre and other small shops and cafes. Walks from the site are good and there is information and laminated maps available from the site at a small cost.
It had rained quite considerably before we arrived but there are 'grass reinforcement' mats on the pitches which cut down the mud.
We will return here possibly in the spring.

Stayed for 3 nights and found the facilities of the site to be very good.
The shower blocks were clean - and the showers themselves lovely and warm - high pressure but you had to keep pressing the button as the time they were on for was very short (i. E. Only a few seconds).
Laundry / washing facilities a plus, and also benefited from well stocked information centre.
Only complaint about the shower blocks - the lights are on a timer - and go off in the morning - which on a dull day can leave the showers and toilet stalls very dark.
Top campsite for tents without electric was very exposed - so when it's a little windy on the rest of the site, it's blowing a gale at the top.
The pub at the bottom of the hill - was very good. Recently changed owner - and the food was excellent. A little pricey though - £5. 25 for a large glass of wine - you can get a bottle of wine and change left over in the shops!
Lots of attractions in the area - therefore the site is a good location (i. E. Tarr Steps less than 10 minutes away)

Visited this site in August 2011. It is a lovely site and the owners are helpful.
The showers and toilets are clean and it had a washing machine and dryer. The pitches were a good size and it had a good play area for the children.
The site is slightly sloping but even though it rained a lot the field was not too muddy.
Although the site was itself was lovely, I felt it was let down by lack of control of dogs (both visitors and farm owned).
On one occasion I went to the reception at the farmhouse and was greeted by a grumpy farm sheepdog growling and coming towards me which frightened me and I quickly returned to the campsite field. With young children I also felt that the cars went far too fast up and down the lane which also included farm vehicles.

Perfect location for walking on Exmoor. Fairly level grass pitch with plenty of space. Laid back atmosphere and peaceful. Showers powerful and an excellent temperature and included in the pitch fee.
Dishwashing area had plenty of very hot water. Nearby pub was a downhill walk (uphill on the way back though!) reasonably priced for meals and welcomed dogs in the bar.
Good recycling facilities and all clearly marked. On the whole one of the best campsites we have stayed on and will be returning in the autumn.

We have just returned from a 6 night camping holiday at Halse farm. It was our first time at this campsite and overall the campsite was good. It is a smallish campsite set in the heart of Exmoor. The facilities were ok, but basic.
There is a small playground on the site which kept our two young children amused as did the many dogs which were there (farmers and campers dogs). They also enjoyed visiting the farm to see the farm animals and horses.
The main flaw we had was that the campsite was quite busy, I suppose being the summer holidays, so it wasn't as quiet as we were expecting. Most reviews here say how quiet it is, but it definitely wasn't quiet on our visit.
We spent most nights listening to other campers snoring as the tents were quite close and the last two nights a group of teenagers turned up who were far from considerate. They were still being noisy at 2am! Needless to say, we came home the next day. Lack of sleep got the better of us.
Overall, a nice campsite, but probably better when not the high season. I think the youth groups should be separated from the family groups as they just don't mix.

A very quite site in a lovely rural setting. There were no marked pitches for tents so you could pitch were you liked which was good.
The toilet/shower block was very good and clean and the showers hot. The dishwashing facilities were adequate. I am not sure how they would all hold up in peak season.
Location was great for walking the dogs. Straight out of the main gate and you were on Exmoor.

Very quite campsite situated up the lane from The Royal Oak pub in Winsford. We always walked down the hill to the village which is only about 20mins (with a 6 year old) and maybe 1/2 hour back - remember to take a torch.
Situated on the saddle of the hill you get some good views over Exmoor and the site is very well kept with clean showers / loos and a well equipped utility room.
Childrens climbing frames and play area kept the little one entertained.
Good base for walking in the area and the village shop sells some good `home made` walking guides in addition to local produce. With a little green and a ford the village is picture postcard stuff in the sunshine and the pub does both good food and real ales.
Will go back again, hopefully soon

A wonderfully tranquil site set high on Exmoor above Winsford. There are beautiful walks and rides all around and thankfully no 'entertainment' or 'club room' on site.
There is a small but well stocked shop in Winsford which is down 'cardiac hill' from the campsite (1 in 5 for a mile). The local pub is also at the bottom of this hill. We heard mixed reviews of the food there, but did not try it.
Within the good clean toilet block there are signs pointing out how strong was the water pressure; such that clothes would get wet when hung in the disrobing part of the cubicle. The lack of a shower curtain caused considerable murmurings from all of the campers. This was the only downside of an otherwise gem of a site.
We will definitely be returning (taking our own shower curtains)

I've just returned from a weekend at Halse Farm. The location is wonderful - on Winsford Hill, although I imagine it could get windswept! The views over to Winsford Hill are wonderful and it was very peaceful, with only the sound of the sheep.
I hadn't booked and there was no-one at reception when I arrived, but comprehensive notes left on the door of reception about which pitches were available. If you don't require an electric hook up, they encourage tents to go in the first field. This isn't massive, so I'm not sure how crowded it would get in the middle of the summer, but it was fine for the end of half term. The field didn't have a lot of character - and due to the size of the field, you may end up being close to your neighbours if it was very busy (but I guess that's the same with most places). I think this is the only campsite I've ever been to where I haven't hit a stone while pitching my tent - not sure if that was luck?
The shower block was fine - although you can't control the temperature of the water and have to keep pressing the button for the water, it was warm and powerful and refreshing. Although there were only 2 showers in the ladies, I never had to queue. The block was clean and tidy, as was the whole site.
The information room had lots of leaflets about places to go, useful numbers, etc. I also used the freezer block facility near the farm house (no charge). The owners seemed friendly and organised, but not patrolling the site (well, not that I noticed).
You only have to step outside the gate from the campsite and you are on Winsford Hill. It's about a mile down the (steep) hill into the village. The village shop seemed to have just about everything you might have forgotten in it. It's closed on Saturday afternoons. The pub was friendly as well and allowed dogs.
I don't want to extol the virtues of it too much, or it will get too overcrowded!
