Very nice site. The river walk is really good with grass areas to sit at and places to paddle or to swim.
The woman on reception was very nice but did not know where the water points or toilets are. I went to the general manager's office and he pointed them out to me by marking them on the site map I was given. Pity they were not already printed on. He told me TS was toilets and showers.
We had a tourer with awning and our family were next to us with two large tents. 6 adults and 4 children. Good sized pitches next to each other, Boundaries not marked could cause arguments.
Very good facilities for children of all ages. 4 available WCs were filthy and flush on one did not work 9. 30am Bank holiday Sunday. I had to walk to the second block and found one that was not too bad. They seem to only clean them once a day around 10am. Very bad management for a Bank Holiday with all pitches full. I see the previous review mentioned similar. One block is available if the other is closed.
The showers were good with a decent dressing area. We had a very good time here and will definitely return hoping constructive criticism is taken onboard. 8 for the pitches as they don't have water, drainage and TV hook up. 10 for the site itself. 4 for the toilets saved from a zero by sinks showers etc.

We stayed at this site for 5 nights over the bank holiday with friends, we had 2 tents, 4 children and a dog.
On arrival at the site the entrance is lovely and very well maintained, we were greeted by a member of staff who didn't know how to book us in and told us that the pitches we had booked and paid in full for were unavailable and we were allocated another 2 pitches.
The pitches were on an incline and were very cramped, we felt that the other campers were right on top of us which also made for a lot of noise.
The toilets and showers were only cleaned once a day so first thing in the morning and late afternoon they were often dirty and we had to speak to the staff on a couple of occasions about the cleanliness and the lack of flushing toilets in the gents.
The toilets and showers are closed for cleaning between 10. 30 am and 12. 00 everyday which is a ludicrous time, by the time we had eaten breakfast and washed up the showers were closed so we had to wait until lunchtime for a shower.
On the plus side the dog walk was great and the children enjoyed the play park and games room. However we won't be returning, we would prefer a site with more room where camping isn't an afterthought to statics.

Possibly the worst site we have ever stayed on.
This site is all about cramming as many people on it as possible to maximise revenue. There are hundreds of statics, wall to wall, with the touring area as an afterthought.
Having driven along a magnificent avenue, through the park we expected great things. The gatekeeper told us that the site was virtually empty having cleared out after the half term holiday the week before. It was however still three quarters full.
We parked on a very narrow pitch and within 3 hours of our arrival were involved in a very aggressive confrontation with our neighbours who had decided to park their car within 2 feet of our habitation door.
As the evening went on it became apparent that most of the caravans that surrounded us were being lived in and were not tourers. As we retired for the night at about 10. 30pm the male occupants of 4 adjacent caravans were busy sawing up pallets for a bonfire!
The two nearby toilet blocks were not regularly cleaned and several of the toilets would not flush. For the privilege of using them we had to pay a £5 deposit for a key. When we fled the following morning the gatekeeper asked if we were coming or going? By this time we had lost the will to live and really did not know!
If you are thinking of visiting this site because of their hype about the red squirrels and the river, forget it. You will not see either for the shanty town of statics. If one caught fire, they would all go up.
We are really loathe to leave bad reviews but this site failed us on every level. We are very experienced tourers and do not leave these comments lightly.

We have stayed at this site several times over the last 10 years and it was the first site we visited after being recommended to us by friends. We find ourselves returning time and time again, it is a smashing campsite that I'd struggle to fault at all. Having to have a key to the toilet block is probably the only criticism
The site has three play parks, (each aimed at different age groups), a very good games room, a football pitch, plenty of grass and woodland for the kids to explore, a (sort of) BMX track, The Squirrel Inn which serves food, good size pitches, plenty of room and a well stocked shop open at very reasonable hours and the staff are brilliant.
It's an ideal site for young families and if you enjoy fishing as we do it is brilliant as the river setting is second to non.
There's a country walk along to Lowther Castle with a river running alongside which in parts is shallow and calm enough for the kids to have a paddle and which you can fish with a permit purchased at reception.
I can not recommend this site highly enough and we will as ever be returning again.

We stayed at this site over a busy May bank holiday. Its ten minutes off the motorway with a beautiful entrance drive. You keep expecting what's around the next corner and then you reach the lodge and you just know this is a well run site.
Considering the amount of people on site, both in touring & static units it was so peaceful.
The facilities & park are beautifully kept. Spotlessly clean & tidy. In the two ladies blocks there were plenty of showers with good supply of hot water, blown air heating and cubicles with sinks, the toilets were in good supply too. Husband says Gents areas were as well kept. The staff are helpful, the shop well stocked & reasonably priced.
The pub sold takeaway and had an eating in area and closes early. We didn't hear any rowdiness at all for the whole four nights we were here.
The pitches are good sized with hardstand & grass for the touring vans. Grass for tents. The children's play area is well maintained and varied. There is a sports field for football, fishing.
You really don't have to leave the site for family fun. We didn't use the family play room but it seemed to be well stocked and furnished.
There is access to the woods at the end of the site, a good dog walk in the woods in the other direction.
Overall a marvellous site. Will definitely go back soon. It's a site you definitely get what you pay for.
The only down note is their website says no sign written vans allowed, unfortunately there were a few, didn't detract from the weekend though!

We chose this site based on it's website. The photographs gave the impression of openness and river views, and the drive into the park is beautiful, but the reality that met us, was wall to wall caravans/awnings and cars, so more akin to a carpark and the river was far away behind the masses of static caravans.
The staff were very friendly and welcoming
The pitch we found very small and struggled to get the caravan onto the pitch negotiating the trees (and as we were one of the first tourers on that area, we had the other pitch spaces to manoeuvre onto and without that we would have really struggled), our awning took up the space to the next pitch and we just about shoehorned the car onto the front. We even moved our car to enable two other caravanners a few feet more to swing there caravan onto their pitches (they ended up handballing their caravan into position).
The Toilet blocks are basic but adequate. The showers are fixed head (unless you get the bath cubicle) and if you're tall, the water is hot, but smaller people like us need to stand further away to get into the water flow and that little extra difference makes it luke warm. You need to leave a £5 refundable deposit for the toilet key too.
The shop is well stocked and the Squirrel Inn busy and seems too small to meet the site size needs.
There are dog walks at either end of the site, which allows for a little space away from the site, but they require more waste bins along them.
With a little extra space given to each pitch, this site would be ok.
We paid for 3 nights and left after 2, we couldn't stand it anymore. Not a site we would return to.
This site just wasn't our cup of tea, but was very busy with families and the children all seemed to enjoy cycling / rollerblading / scooter riding / playing ball etc etc, so more geared up to suit families.
Ideally located for visiting Penrith / Keswick etc

Just returned from a weekend break for Halloween on one of the activity weekends that the site organise. First impressions were good as the approach to the site is lovely and its in a lovel location very close to the M6. The touring pitches are mainly sited seaonal tourers which to be honest puts me off slightly as this site also has lots of log cabins/statics so it has a residential feel to it rather than a touring site. There are only a small amount of come and go pitches and they are tiny, we just about got our twin axle van in and there was no room for a canopy or awning, the sited pitches were huge in comparison! There is a pub on site which needs updating and very small for the size of the site, children are only allowed in a certain part of the pub and you couldn't get a seat as it was packed. They did a Halloween party on Sat afternoon in two sittings and charged extra @ £4. 50 per child, a buffet/drink was included so it wasn't bad value but the entertainer was cringable, and again the venue just isnt adequate for the size of the site and amount of people there. They have used a log cabin as a games room across from the pub, probably because there isnt enough room in the pub. We looked at the food prices but they seemed expensive so we didn't eat there. Drinks were reasonable and the shop was bigger than the pub selling lots of things. This site has the potential to be fantastic as its in a lovely setting and very European feel to it, however, the pitches let it down and the on site pub needs extending and upgrading, it could be a gold mine. We probably wont return again as its further than we would travel for a weekend with not much there.

Just returned from 3 night stay at this site, apart from the varied weather had a fantastic time. Just get minor negatives out of way first, shower/toilets a fair distance from tent field and also a little dated but adequate.
Most of tent pitches are a bit uneven and quite rocky 2 to 3 inches below ground so advise rock pegs, also where we were[27c] long way for ehu[nearly all of our 25mtr was used].
The on site shop was very good with everything you would probably need, but the food at the Squirrel Inn not that good, be it in the restaurant or takeaway.
As we have a chocolate lab who loves swimming the river running through the site is a fantastic bonus that this site has and the river walk is lovely and very scenic, also nobody seemed annoyed that we were walking our dog
Ullswater lake[5miles away] beautiful and also very dog friendly. Will definitely be returning to this site next year.

Excellent toilet/shower facilities, very clean and numerous, never a queue. 2 big facility blocks, one with free use of freezer for ice packs. Lovely site all privately owned statics, lodges and long stay caravans.
Very well stocked shop, everything you need food, alcohol, camping accessories, papers the lot, fair price too. Nice pub on site, only had 1 meal there but it was superb, plenty of it and good price.
Camping area isnt massive, and is bookended by a small football pitch at one end and play area at the other. There wasn't many tents there when we arrived so had choice of pitches and found a nice flat pitch.
The camping area is fairly rectangular separated lengthwise by a footpath with one side slightly sloping, but nothing major. We found the pitches quite small and when other tents moved in around us it became rather in your face with tents no further then 2/3 metres apart kind of ruining your outside space and privacy.
Lots of kids around. Football area bit to close to tents with the ball finding its way to our tent a couple of times.
Lovely site very relaxing when quite, good access to rest of lake district with M6 and A66 close by. Would go back if pitches where a lot bigger and it wasn't so cramped.

This was our second trip to Lowther and we decided we'd spend a week here. We couldn't however because the site was booked from the Friday. So we had Saturday to Friday instead.
Anyway. The pitches are good, A bit close together for my liking but its nothing compared to some sites I've stayed at (Haven for example). Its a nice quiet site and gets very dark at night, so don't forget a torch for any late night toilet breaks - which brings me on to my next point. If anyone from Lowther reads these reviews, why oh why do you have the Facilities block so far from the camping area. My wife has walking difficulties so every time she needed the toilet, I had to drive her there. Its exactly a five minute walk from the majority of the pitches to the nearest toilet. That is not good enough and I cant see why they cant put even a portaloo in the tent field. Its not really any fun walking to the toilet at 2am in the pouring rain. It seriously puts me off going back to the site.
The shop is fantastic. It sells a large range of foods and its a wee bit expensive for some things but a 10 minute drive into Penrith and you can use Morrisons or Somerfield.
The on site pub is a little too small for peak times but its not too bad and we enjoyed it albeit for a couple of drinks and a few games of pool. The food is a bit pricey but portions are good and the quality is fab too. There's a kids play room with arcade machines etc in it. The Laundrette isnt too expensive on site either.
Its a beautiful site and its kept spotless. The toilet blocks despite being too far away are very clean and sufficient for what they do. Its in a fantastic location and great for touring with the A66 on the doorstep. Or you could go for an open air swim at Shap in the highest open air pool in England. They say its heated! I think someone may have been kidding me, but it was quite an experience swimming and shivering in the rain.
This site has the potential to be something special. Its a shame that the facilities are so far from the tent field. It really does ruin what is a fantastic site. If you can hold it in, or are a fast runner, then this is the site for you.
