A reasonably good site but depressing in bad weather. (Gloomy under heavy tree cover). Caters primarily for statics. Poor outdoor facilities for children but nice family games room. Bar meals O.K. Good location (accessible from M/Way but near NE lakes and NW Dales. All usual facilities (Although I don't have a camper Van the facilities for them seemed innovative.) The pitches were imaginative but some were very poor when it rained.

This was our first caravan holiday so we chose this site as it wasn't too far to travel but was in a part of the country we had only passed through when heading south. If all the sites we choose are up to the standards of this one, we will have no complaints. All the staff were friendly and polite, showers and toilets clean, bar and restaurant good, with a good selection of beers and spirits. Only slight down side is cleaning the tree sap off the caravan when we got home. This is a small price to pay and I expect to be back.

As soon as we drove through the gates I liked this site. Plenty of trees, the River Lowther running through it - lovely. The pitch was level but hard, you need good strong pegs. We were under some pine trees so there were pine cones everywhere. There was a reasonable amount of space between pitches so we didn't feel closed in at all. The toilets and showers were very clean. The water was always hot no matter what time of day we went in.
The site shop was brilliant, they really had thought of everything (you must try the crusty cobs!) The site had a pub but we didn't go in it as we had a dog with us. The dog walk area was lovely, a woodland walk with the river running through it. Our retriever loved it. There's another walk at the opposite end of the site which is also nice.
There are several play areas for the kids and a football pitch. The surrounding area is packed with things to do. Wetheriggs pottery, which lets dogs in, is a fun day out. We went to Alston and went on a narrow gauge steam railway, which was great. Ulswater has river steamers and loads of walks. Carlisle is nearby and Hadrians wall isn't too far.
All in all I would definitely go back and would recommend this site as long as you like wildlife and walking.

You'll either love or hate this site. On the love side the surrounding countryside is fantastic for walking . The kids will like it, with the wide open space as a play area and running water in the form of the river Lowther which is slow running and fairly shallow. Club house on site for food and drinks. Toilet and shower blocks plentyful and ok. Wild life fantastic .
On the hate side pitches are small full of potholes, rock hard and under trees. The electric hook ups will not boil a kettle without tripping out. I prefer the farmyard sites so on that note I must say I won't be returning to this one.

22nd-25th August 2003 Where do i start. This is an excellent well maintained site, although mainly for statics and tourers there were quite a few tents there when we were there. The facilities are first class, on site shop is the biggest i've seen on a site, there is also a pub if you don't fancy the night air. The toilets and showers are plentiful and clean with lovely hot water. There are plenty of things to do for the kids, football pitch, forest, river, parks. Even the red squirrel runs about the site quite happily. There is a lovely river walk (some 2-3 miles) which ends with a climb up to the village of Askham, but there is a lovely little pub at the top where you can quench your thirst with a drink or several!!. Definitely recommended, only minus point was the trek to the toilets, but apart from that what a lovely few days we had.

End of April 2003 We didn't like this site. The first thing that struck us on approaching the site was an industrial type entrance i.e. security guard with an attitude and automated barriers. The other thing which really put us off, and we did not know till booked in, was T.V. cameras in the toilets/showers and the sheer size of the site although individual pitches felt very confining. The one redeeming feature was the red squirrels and wildlife in general which mixed with the general populace with remarkable aplomb. To be fair, we must be in a minority with our opinion as the site was easily two thirds to three quarters full and maybe we were biased after spending the previous week on spacious sites in Scotland. We also felt the charge was rather on the high side. (£15.50)

August 2000 Nice big open site although railway line very close to tent pitches. And the trains DO run throughout the night. Best redeaming feature is its proximity to Weatherriggs Pottery, a great day out for all the family! Go down to see the rare breed pigs and say hello from Shelly! We feel the site was very geared towards caravaners, and campers were an afterthought.

May 2002 Have camped here several times and would recommend site. Pitches good, level and decent size, showers and toilets excellent. Pretty site in a beautiful setting and very clean - great for families - quite peaceful for a fairly large site.
