This was my base camp before taking my bike to the top of scafell pike! I had stayed at the other National Trust site at Langdale so it was interesting to see certain differences.
The shop has limited opening hours, there is a board outside to tell you, but they are generally a few hours in morning and then again at teatime. The views as you can imagine are incredible! You are surrounded by mountains on three sides and then behind you is Wastwater. So with this in mind you can forget internet or even a phone signal! If you want to text then climb up Lingmell or something because you will get some signal.
The site is very clean and the camping field has scattered trees that you can pitch next to if you wish too. Clean toilet/shower facilities but because there is no drying room I was forced to use the dryers at £1 for 20mins. They actually are very good dryers and do the job in that time! A 20min walk will take you to wasdale head inn for food and ale; I thought the food here was pricey but the quality actually showed why, very nice. A perfect place to escape from the rat-race!

Arrived a little before time but did get on site. The site was clean and tidy. I did feel though that this site did not cater for campervan's. We found no where to fill up with water unless you went into the middle of the tent field, no way with a campervan. The showers where a bit of a let down, clean and tidy but only one hook on the back of the door. No shower curtain, no stool, I did take a chair in but anything on it got wet due to no curtain.
Where the campervan's are there is no view of anything, to many trees. Also the trees overhang the pitches so the campervan's have to wangle a way in. Every thing needs to be trimmed back. When we were there the days were really bright but because of the trees we had to put lights on.
We have done camping in the forest with less trees.
The staff where very helpful but I did feel this site is more for tents than Campervan's.
The views once you get off site are wonderful and you can start your climb up Scarfell Pike from this site. The walk over to Boot is well worth doing !0 mile round trip. If not the walk to Burnmoore Tarn it's well worth the walk.

Nutshell review, Simple facilities, great for Scafell, quiet, friendly helpful reception staff. I would recommend to friends but without kids due to its location.
Basic facilities are excellent. They even have little 'steps' to place in front of the sinks if you do have little people with you. The showers are free and about the same size cubicle as most places ie. Not quite big enough to be comfortable. The reception has a small selection of supplies so although you can't be choosy you won't go hungry or without a tent peg but do remember your sleeping bag!
The camping only site has a gravel track around one side so although car-next-to-tent isn't possible you won't have to walk far with your kit. Pitch where you like, There are a lot of trees around the site so sheltered areas are plentiful, just don't expect to find a bone dry spot, it has lush grass and marshland plants, enough said?
This is not a site to take the kids for a week. It's location is great for hillwalking and scenery. Poor for shops, restaurants and visiting the rest of Cumbria. The main road to it is a few miles of twisty turny single track tarmac. There is a river on the opposite side of the camping area, not accessible on the whole.
A footpath shares the gravel track through the site and if this is followed out of the site Wasdale head is accessible without walking the half mile or so along the narrow road. Boots or wellies may be required though, this is the lake district. At the end you will find the Wasdale head Inn. They sell food and ales but definitely no wi-fi. An outdoor type shop is also here but we never looked inside. The Inn also has a payphone outside.
Please note that with two network providers between us we got no reception at all in this valley area. Ascending a hill gave us a signal.

We loved the idyllic location of this pretty site sheltered by trees and surrounded by wild mountains. From our camper van on hardstanding with electricity it was a short walk across a rough field to the excellent facilities. Sturdy footwear is essential and wellies would be good for splashing through shallow streams on pretty, off road walk to the pub about 3/4 mile up the valley.
A very pretty short walk from site, is to follorw the tumbling river up towards Scafell, and then turn left following a path back round the hill and down to Wasdale Head.
Staff on site friendly and helpful. Shop expensive for coffee so wish we had remembered to bring some!
Disappointed to find No Wasdale cheese for sale here or in Wasdale Head shop.
Found waymarking very good in valley but not higher up. Must find a NT book detailing local walks as we'd like to find the coffin path to Eskdale next time. We came across three lads carrying mountain bikes uphill having failed to find lower track to Eskdale!

Wasdale Head National Trust campsite is located at the head of Wastwater, England's deepest lake, and in the shadow of its highest peak, Scafell Pike. It's a very isolated spot - the Wasdale Head Inn is a 20 minute walk and has a small outdoor equipment store. Other than this, the nearest pubs are at Nether Wasdale (6 miles) and nearest town with shops etc is Gosforth (8 miles). It's the remoteness of Wasdale that makes it so attractive - it is totally peaceful and far from any TV and phone signals, and a great place to base yourself for hillwalking. Some of the best peaks in the lakes can be started from the site.
The site itself has a small shop (opening times vary), a large camping field and a number of pitches with electricity for campers. The facilities block was large with plenty of showers, though the block was pretty cold. They could also do with a footpath to the facilities as you have to wade across a muddy field in wet weather to get to them.
Overall, great site in a great spot!

This site takes advantage of its position and therefore the attention to detail is sadly lacking.
On arrival, you collect an envelope which says on it that a swipe entry card is inside except there wasn't. Now this site is expensive, charges an unjustifiable booking fee, and therefore I was paying for the security the site provides amongst other things, to find it not in operation was disappointing as anyone could come and go without question.
The pitches for campervans are not allocated however there were signs saying 'reserved', no idea if this meant reserved for me, or for those already on site but out for the day, make the signs clearer please!
Other campsites have a sign by a tap stating 'drinking water' or not as the case maybe, not here so one just has to presume it's safe.
Coin operated showers, 20p pieces needed, but couldn't quite understand why the meter was outside the cubicle, so how long 20p would last? I washed back at my van.
Excellent ale at the pub which is a mile away, didn't eat there but food looked ok.
Gorgeous location, goes without saying really.

A great site, in the wild side of the Lakes. This site is more for walkers, climbers and alike and not for late-night party seekers. The quiet time, really means that here, and it's a good thing. Wardens do ask noise makers to shuuuuuuuush. As with all National Trust sites, it's way too expensive with ridiculous booking fees. - There is another site down the road opposite the pub which is almost free in comparison.

My wife and I were looking for a quiet site in the Lakes for a few days, and with it being the school holidays looked for one which was quite remote. We found this one online, and also booked online (costing £5, a bit steep on top of the usual fee), after trying to book by phone which was not possible.
Wardens were very pleasant, the toilets and showers were clean, and were tended to a couple of times a day. The site was quiet even with a few youngsters running about, but I didn't see any playground or facilities for them. The shop has the essentials if you've forgotten anything, a bit pricey (milk 70p per pint), but is better than driving to Gosforth to get it.
Wasdale Head Inn is half a mile walk, where the food was excellent, as was the beer.
If I was in the area again I'd definitely come back, but it was a long drive after leaving the M6 for us, so we'll probably look for somewhere a little closer. Great site though, in stunning location.

One of the best campsites we've visited, no need to sing its praises as other people have done so already.
However, the mens showers were hit and miss, after three days my husband managed to get a hot shower ( no problems with the ladies).
The extractor fan grilles above the mens showers would benefit from cleaning properly as they're covered in fluff which results in a lot of moisture in the shower block.
Regarding the walks challenge people setting off early hours of the morning. They are obviously either unaware or more to the point inconsiderate that there are people asleep on the campsite, so, they obviously need to be told to Shut Up! Apart from this we will definitely return.

We stayed in a pod. After an interesting drive in the pitch black, we arrived late to find our keys left for us. A trek up the field in the dark, tripping over ourselves on the way, we scrambled into a lovely warm snug pod.
It has heating, lighting and a plug socket. We awoke the next morning to the most breath taking view. We had the kids with us and after a quick chat wi the warden, we followed his advice for a lovely walk up into the mountains.
It is definitely not a party site but super for families and walkers alike
The showers were hot, the toilets clean and the shop and warden impeccable.
Although it isn't cheap, it is my favourite campsite of all time. It is just beautiful!
