A wonderful quiet campsite that is a must for walkers - but be warned you need to get here early. The location is stunning, you could spend hours just watching the clouds swirl around the peaks if it were not for the fact that you were wasting wonderful walking time. As with other NT sites in the area the staff are very helpful and do not allow the site to become over busy, the site full sign went up when there was plenty of room between pitches and less scrupulous sites would be packing them in. Pitching is much easier than at Langdale as the ground is less stony. The showers are 20p but they are worth it as they are hot, I need to add cold which I have never had to do at Langdale and very powerful. I have never had to use more than one 20p although my partner said he only just managed to get done - but he does spend a long time in the shower. You need to come fully prepared as there is not much here other than fantastic scenery. We forgot our airbed and as the NT shop had none and the one local shop ( Barn Door shop)( had sold out we had a 45 minute drive to Whitehaven. There is a local inn - the wasdale head Inn which has a very basic campsite if you can't get into the NT one. The In does basic but good walkers pub food where you can sit in or out, there is a great friendly atmosphere with people all too willing to share their walking stories. We are already planning our return visit.

First time camping since 1988 and the first time EVER that I've paid to do it (last camp was for 6 months at Low Wray on the sea scouts bit when I was a volunteer instructor - By the way - I noticed some references to a rather eccentric warden at Low Wray - that sounds like the one back then, Jim I think he was called)
Anyhow - arrived on a damp thursday with spanky new tent. Shop/office was shut so we pitched (get me "pitched") up on the top part of the sight. This is a good location for smaller tents, close to the block and you can park behind if you're lucky (useful if your bike is worth more than your car).
Being Wasdale it was wet although the general lie of the land up where we set up to helped. Everyone seems nice enough.
Upon opening, the shop was well stocked and staff very helpful and friendly. I found the block well kept to (the missus reported similar) although not many dryers so busy times could see you still damp in the morning.
The site location is wonderful with plenty of trees to shelter you but not too many to restrict the views.
Previous reviews allude to the bridleway leading up the valley to the pub - well - all I can say is bring a canoe or a guide cos I couldnt cross anywhere without wet socks (note earlier reference to dryers).
At night the site seemed very self regulated with only the gentle mutterings of one tent breaking the 11.00 noise curfew on the first night (oh - and countless "shut ups" from the surrounding tents) - not a big problem though.
Overall the site was as billed - quiet, well kept and beautiful. All the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful and the block was more than adequate with good showering and washing up facilities.
Walks and rides (if you like it rough) out from the site are superb (the walks are surely amongst the best in the country) and there are a few good pubs serving decent food within a few minutes. The Wasdale Inn serves up excellent micro brewery beer as well. Yewbarrow mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
One thing I see a lot of comments about is how far out it is and the fearsome passage over Hardknot. Well it is a bit out but its a very nice drive in and, if your in a half decent car built after 1965, Hardknot is not as fearsome as some will allow you to think (just go early before all the "oh my god, no white lines and what does 1:3 mean? motorists clog up the narrow pass. Its what your first gear was built for!
Recommended - so much so I'm off again this week!

This is possibly the most peaceful site I've ever stayed in! It's excellent for escaping everything (no mobile phone signals here!), and also has some amazing walks surrounding it. We chose the site after reading about it in the 'Cool Camping' book, which is a book selecting the 40 'coolest' campsites in the country based on the niceness factor. And nice it definitely was! We pitched our campervan in one of the new spots as mentioned by the previous reviewer, overlooking Wast Water. The view on the morning as we opened our curtains to be greeted by the lake was breathtaking! I would highly recommend the local pub, great beer brewed onsite, and the fastest pub grub I've ever had! Both lunch and dinner served within 30secs of ordering! (ie all the food was pre prepared - so they only had to put it on the plates - but the food itself was nice and just what was needed after walking!) There's not much else in the village - the smallest church in England, and the World's Biggest Liar in the pub(!) (look at the photos on the wall in the pub to see previous entrants to this competition!) and a small provisions shop. The main reason for going is to admire the breathtaking scenery - and to try and conquer some of the mountains! The campsite itself is basic but nice enough for what it is. The shower block is large - half a dozen showers in the mens- but remember to take a 20p coin with you for the hot water. The toilet block was not the cleanest I've ever seen, but I guess a lot of mud has to get washed off in there from all the hikers! The shop was great, a good supply of all the provisions you could need, including a good range of fresh food and fruit and veg. I would definitly return to this campsite, but stop a few nights not just one to allow time to do a proper walk. Tip when driving here from the south of the lake district - the Hardknott Pass looks like a bloody hard road to drive over! We were in a camper van, and after (just) making it over the Wrynose Pass, we saw the Hardknott looming up ahead and there was absolutly no way our camper van would have made it over there. So we bottled out half way along the road, and went round the A road instread, and this detour added 2 hours onto the journey time. Keep it simple - just take the A road!

This site has just added four new pitches with electric hook ups and wonderful views down Wast Water. It is well away from the main camping fields. They looked good though with level pitches and well spaced out. Didn't use the camp site facilities although we did use the shop which has a good stock of all necessities. We walked down to the Wasdale Head Inn, and recommend the good food and good variety of beers available there.

If you want peace and quiet this is an ideal site. I have been here twice so far this year. The campsite is set in a picturesque location. As the site is quite remote it tends to be frequented by walkers, which makes it quiet as most people are tucked up early doors. The Local Pub, The Wasdale Head Inn, does basic pub-grub, but seems popular (there isn't another pub/eating place for a few miles). I was n't to impressed, but I'm a fussy eater! the atmosphere and service was good, which made up for it. The only provision's shop was at the site, which seemed reasonably well stocked as NT shops go - they also display the mountain weather forecast, which is worth checking, as the weather seems to change quite quickly. I think the nearest shop apart from this is Eskdale green, which is quite a drive, so come prepared. There are also lots birds, that are relatively tame. I had a robin on my guy ropes waiting for crumbs, so great for twitchers too.

Lovely site - basic but comfortable, great location for walking. The showerblocks were a little dim, as several lightbulbs were out, but they were clean and the hot showers were great. As others have said, take lots of 20p coins! The Wasdale Head Inn is handy for a post-walk pint - it's also 100% non-smoking in the public bar. However, you get better value food (and more choice) at The Screes in Nether Wasdale. It's about 4-5km away but it's well worth it.

This campsite is in a stunning location with fantastic views from every angle and there is a nice relaxed feel to the site. The facilities are kept clean and there is a shop selling all forgotten items! One of the great things about this site is its remoteness. Consequently there is no traffic noise nor artificial light, which is great! It's ideal for climbing Scafell (largest mountain), taking in the beauty of Wastwater (deepest lake) and visiting the smallest church! The Wasdale Head Inn is only a stagger away and serves a great selection of ales and hearty food. It also sells Hartleys Ice cream which is a local brand and the best in the world!

The route is long and windy and you do begin to wonder if you will ever get there, but in the end it is well worth it.
I was unlucky enough to visit when the magnificent local peaks were hidden by thick cloud, but the sheer tranquility and escapism made up for that. Not one for hiking in poor visibility, I stuck to lowland walking, but it turned out I was so hungover from drinking local ale in the inn (a beer named after each mountain) that I was glad of the excuse.
The shower and toilet facilities were top notch and being so remote all the campers were friendly hikers and bikers who genuinely loved the countryside.

This is infact not the Inn campsite as a previous reviewer suggests, but is the National Trust campsite situated at the head of Wast Water before you reach the Inn. The site has excellent facilities - plenty of showers; toilets; washing-up facilities; a shop and also a laundry room. The site is nicely situated and is very handy for climbers. It has a nice informal layout, and you can pitch wherever takes your fancy. Slightly on the expensive side at £3.50 per adult, and worse is the cost of parking th car - £2.00 per night! Cars have to be left in a separate area away from the tents which would be annoying if wet! The staff were all very friendly and helpful, and there was no trouble with noise from anyone else on the site. This is a very enjoyable site in a most beautiful part of England.

A great site, just as you would expect from the National Trust. Clean, well-lit toilet/shower block. A shop selling essentials although they had run out of sausages by the time we were ready for breakfast (i.e. We had burnt ours!). All set in some of the best scenery in England, we will definitely be going again.
