If it wasn't for a constant rain the trip would have been brilliant. We arrived at the site early on just as the shop was closing and were told that we could pitch up anywhere and sort out payment later that day or the following morning.
There was loads of room and more space in separate fields available. The shower block was very well equipped with plenty of toilets, urinals, sinks & showers, at 20p for about 5 minutes it was great value & very hot. There is also several cleaning sinks outside for your pots. On site you have a small shop wit basic essentials and the office to pay for your pitch which is very well priced.
Just down from the site is the Wasdale Head Inn which serves good food & drink. It is set in the most amazing surrounding of the Scafell range.
Well worth a visit.

Spent two nights on this site and have to say, I fully recommend it. The site is very big, mainly catering for tents, with some spaces for campervans. Toilet and shower facilities are adequate and are plentiful for the large numbers of people using the site. The shop is very well stocked, even if a little pricey and the staff who run it are friendly and helpful. There are now electric hook-ups available. The site can be quite pricey, depending on your needs, as there is a charge for almost everything (£5.50 per person, £3 per car, £3EHU, £1.50 per dog) and therefore ended up costing us almost £40 for 2 nights for 2 people!
Nevertheless, the site fees were worth every penny due to the stunning location it is situated in. You can reach Wast Water, England's deepest lake, within a few minutes walk, and the route up Scafell and Scafell Pike runs directly from the site. The scenery here is some of the best you will find in this country and several huge fells surround the site. Wasdale is a very remote Hamlet - which means that it is not completely rammed with tourists and is largely unspoilt.
About a mile from the site is the Wasdale Head Inn, which predominantly serves hill walkers and rock climbers. Beer is good, but I couldn't comment on the food as I gave it a miss. Adjacent to the pub is a shop that sells any camping and outdoor essentials.

The drive to the site is fantastic and the view along the way just gives you that feeling of a real lake district experience. It’s a narrow road and you do feel like you driving on an edge especially on the way out. My partner was a bit nervous at times when cars were coming the other way but I didn’t find it a problem.
It’s a national trust site so you have to turn up and hope for the best, we rang on route but still it’s no guarantee of a place. The car park is next to the reception area and all the staff we meet were very friendly indeed.
You pick your own pitch and in high session I can image this been just about anywhere, watch out the lower end of the site tends to flood but there is a sign advising you of that.
We pitched next to the road for the site and still it was outstanding for the views and we never had any problems of noise even with all the walkers passing by. You are surrounded by mountains and we got no mobile reception (Yippee). It was at least 2 mile outside the area before we got anything but there is a public phone to use.
The facilities are very clean and the 20p charge for the showers offered me a comfortable shower, however my partner did twist about it for our daughter.
There is a shop and is has all the vital things you did at the usual onsite shop prices.
This has to be one of the best sites in the lakes; along the road there is an inlet where you and your children can play, fantastic, just the views and the calming atmosphere.
We are going back, I promise you that.

This is the most stunning location I have visited in England. It is also one of the quietest sites I have visited - most people are there for walking and keep sensible hours!
The site is very rocky and short pegs and a high impact hammer are essential. Cars are not allowed on the site itself but it is possible to park close by most pitches. The shop is excellent, stocking most items which might be needed - airbed, tent pegs, insect repellent etc. We were however pleased to have brought most food with us as the site is quite remote.
Walking from the site each day was great - in a whole week we did not use the car once! Walking Scafell Pike was easy from the site and the view of it from the site was wonderful.
The pub in the village was good for a drink but the school dinner approach to meals- all cooked and served as required from heated troughs was rather odd and not great value for money.
The camping shop was useful.
This is definitely a site we would return to despite having to leave home at 6.30am to arrive in time to get a pitch!

We have stayed at this site twice (late Oct 07/early April 08)and think it is great. The peace and tranquillity are second to none. The site is woody with plenty of places to pitch away from others. The facilities are basic but clean with lots of toilets/sinks and 4 showers (20p). The washing-up sinks are clean with hot water/bins/recycling. This site attracts serious walkers/campers off season (can't say for summer) and we felt a little out of place with our gazebo the first stay! So, returned with minimalist kit for the second time and felt right at home. There is a good pub in Wasdale Head with simple, well-cooked food (gets very busy though-so go early), its about 20 mins walk. The views are spectacular and good base for Scafell Pike/Great Gable etc. This site is a little gem and well worth the time it takes to get there.

Paid our first winter visit to Wasdale Head, (December 14/15/16) and was delighted to find that we were the only tent on site.
Weather was glorious (Bright and clear anyway). This site has many trees and the fact that they were all bare gave it a much more open aspect than usual.
Found it strange that we had to pay for each night's stay separately?
Didn't do any walking on this trip, just enjoyed the solitude and the views, although we did have a saunter to the local pub.(Where we were also delighted to find ourselves the sole patrons.Nice!
Would recommend a winter stay here. But don't bother trying to drive over Hardknott Pass, not worth the risk. Only took a small stretch of ice to make it impassable for us.

We stayed at this site for a bit of a change, as we normally camp at the NT site in Langdale when we visit the Lakes. Although it took a considerably longer time to arrive at the site, because we had to cross the Hardknott Pass, we both felt it was well worth the effort. The campsite is in a truly beautiful location, perhaps even more so than Langdale, and its remoteness meant that there were less rowdy campers chatting and drinking into the small hours than you get at the Langdale site. The facilities were clean and tidy, but as everyone has mentioned before you need to have either some 20p or 10p coins for the showers. There was a small shop on site, and a slightly larger one down by the pub, which is about a mile down the road. We had food at the pub, and although it is served 'school dinner' style (i.E. It is already cooked and is simply plonked on a plate) it was lovely, if a little bit expensive. We will definitely come here again, and will probably avoid coming in high season as the site seems a lot smaller than the Langdale one. We will also probably only come if we're staying for a little longer, as we seemed to spend just as much time travelling to and from the site as we spent staying on it!

Just back from a couple of days at wasdale head and have come away thinking that I now have a favourite campsite!
The whole of this area is suited to the outdoors enthusiast, and the campsite is set up as such. If you like play areas, club houses and lots of local amenities, then this is most definitely not the site for you. If on the other hand you like peace and quiet, a campsite that has clean and tidy facilities and is in one of the most stunning settings in the british isles (in my opinion of course)then this is the site for you.
One thing to note about this site is that it is WELL off the beaten track, so dont expect to be popping out to the nearest tesco for a pint of milk. You will have to take everything with you, apart from the odd bits and bobs that you may get off the campsite shop (limited stock, and limited hours of opening).
As mentioned before, this whole area is perfect for walkers, climbers and anyone who loves the outdoors. But outside of these activities your going to have a pretty long drive out of the valley for any type of entertainment (although there is an evening of beer to be had at the wasdale head inn).
In short. Great site, great setting, but not for everyone (which makes it better for those of us that love it!).

This site has 6 electric hook ups and luckily one was available for us. It was very chilly when we were there at the end of september and we are softy campers so we appreciated our heater in the van after a day's walking.
The staff were relaxed, friendly and helpful and the shop opens twice a day for provisions. They sell frozen meat from local farms and this is delicious, especially the lamb.
The site is very spacious and leafy. It wasn't very busy due to the time of year but I can imagine its very popular in summer because of the fabulous walking. The site is almost surrounded by big peaks and there is very little in the way of entertainment on site, thankfully. The local pub is about a mile away and apart from being a place to keep warm over a pint it has little to recommend it.

What a beautiful loaction! The site is nestled in amongst the mountains, in a remote area ideal for some serious walking. We last visited this site 10 years ago (before children) and it rained so hard we got washed out. 10 years later with three little girls to add to the party.Guess what? It rained so hard we got washed out!
This was a real shame as the views when we arrived were stunning, there was plenty of wildlife to be seen and the site was blissfully tranquil.
The site shop was well stocked, and the facilities were basic but clean. After it had been raining for about 12 hours, the passage to and from the toilets became a complete quagmire with a rather interesting bouquet! When the loos were being cleaned, a diversion sign was put up leading round the corner to the single disabled loo, where at one point quite a queue had formed. Our friends had packed up and left by the next morning (their tent had leaked), and we noticed some of the pitches are liable to flooding - but these are usually clearly marked, so be observant when selecting your pitch.
We braved the rain and went sight seeing around the lake district (lots to see and do), ending up at the cottage of Beatrix Potter which was very enjoyable. The following day (still raining) we went to Muncaster Castle which was fabulous and well worth a visit. There is something for everyone to enjoy and we would reccommend checking out their website. A meal at the Wasdale Head Inn is a must (and warm and dry to boot).
At the campsite there was no play area for the children, but we don't necessarily go in for that sort of thing, and the site was peaceful as a result - it is really ideally suited for the more serious camper/walker due to it's remote location (it is at least a 30 minute drive just to get to the main road!) It was fascinating to watch the divers going in to the lake, with every turn in the road there seemed to be another group getting their flippers on! The National Trust staff were informative and approachable, and if you can just manage to get some good weather, the site would be great. PS (They don't give refunds for bad weather, so book one night at a time - just in case!)
