We spent a single night at the NT camp site on Saturday night after turning up without a booking. I'd seen their booking website and spoken to them through their Facebook group but didn't book in advance as this requires a minimum 2 night stay. We only wanted to stay a single night as we were heading to Snowdon the following morning.
As it turned out they had plenty of space and despite the reception being closed I chanced upon a lass who worked there who welcomed us in. We parked the car up in the visitor's car park, threw up the tent and headed up Scafell Pike. On our return we had a cuppa and waited until 5pm when the reception opened and we paid up and was given an access card for the parking gate. At all times the staff we met were courteous and friendly.
The facilities on site were very clean and of a good standard. The showers were very warm and 20p lasted as long as I was in there for. My only criticism of the showers were the pay machines being outside the cubicle and only one hook for clothes, towel, toiletry bag. That's me being very critical though.
I prefer to be able to park the car next to the tent however fully understand the motivation behind keeping the camp site unspoilt. As it happened we pitched next to the reception and the car was only 30ft away anyway.
Location wise, it was perfect for our needs. We wanted to climb Scafell Pike and the site could not have been closer. Our GPS tracker on the iPhone suggested that we were three minutes from the tent to the start of the climb and from there 2. 5miles to the summit. Access to the site is down a tight and undulating road beside Wastwater.
Larger vehicles should take care but really it's no worse than most country lanes I drive in Wales, the Peak and the Dales. In fact, the drive is a part of the holiday for me and I'll go looking for twisty roads. And the Hardknott pass is only a few miles away!
Overall I was very satisfied with the NT camp site at Wasdale and will be happy to return again in the future.

Wasdale Head campsite is run by the National Trust and is located at the head of Wastwater beneath the mountains of the Scafell range.
The campsite is in a remote location so go prepared. The site's small shop sells basic provisions but the nearest general store is in Gosforth village which is over 30 minutes drive. However, the Wasdale Head Inn is only 20 minutes walk and it is a really excellent pub which serves good food and is open all day.
Because this site is popular (especially with people intending to climb to Scafell Pike) it's advisable to pre-book at busy times (the National Trust provides an online booking facility).
The site itself spreads over several areas divided by trees and low hedges. The ground is fairly stony so take rock pegs and a metal hammer. There are secluded parking bays reserved for campervans and several wooden camping pods.
The camping fields slope gently and there are quite a lot of humps and bumps. Despite being low-lying in a valley, the site didn't flood despite very heavy rain during my stay although big puddles formed. Cars must be parked on hard-standings (no parking beside pitches) and I found the hedges gave sufficient shelter from the wind.
The entrance has barriers in and out so arrivals must park and visit reception to collect a magnetic card to operate the barriers. The reception and shop are just beyond the entrance. Arrival times are from 3pm to 7pm and I found the staff welcoming and helpful - my arrival was dealt with swiftly and courteously.
The site has a centrally-placed facilities block with loos, showers, a laundry room, and outdoor covered washing up sinks. There are sufficient loos and showers to ensure that queueing is unlikely. Showers operate by coin-in-slot meters and you get an adequately long period of very hot water for 20 pence. The laundry contains a washing machine and tumble drier (there is a charge for use). I found the facilities clean and replenished regularly.
Fires are not allowed on any part of the site and the rule is six metres separation between tents. There is a noise curfew at 11pm - unfortunately during my stay there was considerable disturbance in the early hours by a drunken couple but, apparently, no warden on site to deal with it.
Dogs must be kept on a lead but nearby footpaths are available for dog-walking. If you have a dog, this is a sheep farming area so you must keep your pet under close control.
Wasdale Head campsite is well-placed for walking up to Scafell Pike and also for other nearby fells. The approach road and nearby NT car park are very busy with climbers and hikers, even at night. Expect some disturbance from late-night minibus parties attempting the so-called 'three peaks challenge'.
In summary, Wasdale Head is a well-run campsite with good basic facilities in a good setting for mountain hikers.

The site is fairly large with a central toilet/shower block and a well stocked camp shop that sells food, drink, books and essential camping gear.
The nearby Wasdale Head pub is within easy walking distance and has a great atmosphere as well as doing nice food. The site is in a nice location for hiking and is a perfect starting point for climbing Scafell Pike. You can't ask for a more picturesque location either.
Perhaps the only down side in my mind was that I thought the site was a little dear. This was the most expensive site I've stayed at, and whilst the facilities were good, I'm not sure they justified the price, especially since you are charged extra for showers and the use of a hairdryer.

This National Trust run campsite tucked away near the top of Wasdale is a one I would recommend any enthusiastic camper to visit at least once in their life, even if only to experience the remoteness of the site sitting at the foot of England highest peaks - Scafell & Scafell Pike.
The site is professionally run by a small team who are always more than happy to help or give advice where possible. There are 120 or so pitches including a handful of hard standing areas for camper vans.
Reception doubles as a small shop which sells an amazing variety of items, and although to some it may seem over-priced, its way cheaper than doing the 16 mile round trip to Gosforth for that loaf of bread you forgot. The rest of the facilities - toilets / showers / wash-up areas / laundry room & chemical disposal - are all located in the buildings in the center of the site, with drinking water taps spread throughout the pitches.
The campsite is located in a semi wooded area which gives you the choice to pitch in the shade of trees or in the open field. It's also not the levellest of sites, what I would call 'bumpy' in places, and it's also prone to be wet in the lower areas after heavy rain. I would also recommend taking some ground hog pegs or heavier duty tent pegs, as some parts of the site only seem to have 3 or 4 inches of soil, then you hit gravel / stone.
Three main ground rules apply on site
1/. Tents are a minimum of 6 metres apart
2/. Strictly no noise after 11pm
3/. No cars allowed on the field
Which all add up to mean you might have to carry your tent and all your equipment up to 80 metres to your pitch, but at least when you get it all set up and turn in for bed, you'll be far away from the next tent so as to not hear them snoring.
The hills in the surrounding valley provide some of the best walking in the Lake District, the Scafell's, Great Gable, Pillar, Haystacks to name a few, all lie within easy walking distance, and this is shown by the popularity of the site. The NT have now introduced an online booking system which works very well, but does not allocate you a specific pitch, so it's still advisable to get there as soon as you can.
Half a mile further on up the valley, at the end of the road, lies the Wasdale Head Inn, which provides some very thirst quenching beers, and some good wholesome cooking (or so I'm told). Next door to this is the Barn Door shop - an outdoor clothing shop, which sells a good selection of walking and mountain climbing guide books, as well as some basic supplies (gas canisters, tinned food, sweets and such).
This is a campsite, that once you have visited it, you'll come back time and time again, as the endless walks and sheer beauty of the scenery will make such a mark on you. A site that's seclusion and remoteness are its attraction.

I can't deny this site is in a glorious situation. The facilities are very clean and modern (Dyson blade hand driers!)- also the staff are polite and helpful.
I last visited this site some four years ago, since then security barriers and cctv have been installed.
I know the site is primarily for tent campers but I was disappointed at the state of the campervan pitches. Yes most now have the ( apparently essential nowadays) hook-up, but the campervan area overlooking the lake looks very neglected compared to four years ago.
The 'new' four bays nearer the facilities block look like an afterthought and are small and unlevelled. I'm not usually a grumpy old man (usually frequenting remote sites in the NW of Scotland), and again, I know it's really a tenting site, but at £10 per person per night (off peak), with no hook-up, showers extra, and extra for dogs (I think), it's not cheap and it looks as if all funds for improvement have gone on hi-tech security etc & not the basics.
And while I'm being grumpy, £14 for a bottle of Chilean Chardonnay at the pub

Fourth time my wife and I have been to this site in the last five years and there have been small but significant improvements since two years ago. The on-line booking option is a god-send as it takes away the anxiety of travelling so far off the beaten track with the possibility of finding no space available at the end of it.
There is also now a card-operated barrier across the entrance road, meaning that finding a space to park is not a problem. The site is also slightly bigger than before, offering plenty of pitching options, most of which appear to be 95% flat. Good drainage means rain water disappears quickly.
As others have said, it's a long, long way from the tourist hot-spots so not good for visiting anywhere other than the Wasdale valley itself, and you'd be well advised to take all your own provisions.
Facilities are as good as any I've come across in a campsite; clean, spacious, well maintained. They even have a Dyson Airblade in the loos, best hand dryer money can buy in my book
There is, however, no 'children's play area' that I've ever seen and only one pub, which is about a 15min walk away.
Good walking locally besides the obvious Sca Fell, several 'serious' mountains close by. Not for the light-hearted or casual walker though, at least Pillar wasn't when we went up it in strong winds. Scary stuff at times.
Wellies will prove useful for crossing the shallow river to the pub and avoiding the sometimes busy road route.
Not cheap but if you're looking to avoid the crowds and be in the company of people who are there to walk the fells you couldn't ask for much more.

This campsite is very nice although expensive at nearly £20/night for 1 person, tent and car but its well laid out with plenty of room for tents. A minimum distance of 6m between tents is a rule the wardens make campsite visitors stick too so it never feels too overcrowded.
Situated at the head of Wasdale if offers spectacular views of the surrounding country side and easy access to the surrounding fells. There's also a cracking pub just up the road offering a a great selection of local real ales and some really tasty food.
The campsite has a little store for all the essentials you might need whilst camping like groceries and a small selection of camping equipment.
The showers/toilet/washing up facilities are clean and adequate, my only complaint with regards to these is the fact that they charge 20p for a shower and hot water is limited so during busy times expect an ice cold shower for you money. Personally I feel the showers should be free given the fact that is one of the most expensive campsites I've visited and they cold.

Enjoyed my stay here , the road from gosforth to the camp site is real 'postie pat 'but that added to the motorcycle ride to get there.
The staff were very helpful, the facilities were great, they like you to pitch your tent 6 metres from the next pitch, although the site was busy there was hardly any noise,
I brought my own food but I did get some things at the reception
scafell pike was busy but the early starters didn't bother me as I was pitched well away from the N T car park. The road in is on the right, there is a sign saying camp site on the left but it is overgrown with weeds a
I have another holiday in august and I am working on my wife to come here for a few days as I enjoyed the peace and quiet

Just returned from a three day stay at wasdale campsite, the road was very narrow to it, fantastic scenery, site very clean, we stayed in a wooden pod which was brilliant similar to a small log cabin.
Showers 20p very long and hot, only downside for me was there was no electric sockets for hair dryers etc, although there was a mounted dryer to use for 20p,
There was an on site shop, pub 15min walk excellent food and beers.
We had a brilliant view over scafell pike, which we climbed, there's loads of walks to explore,
It's very remote only sound is the sheep, definitely be back for another visit.

This site is remote, really remote. All around you is beautiful stunning scenery, the big mountains of the lake district. It was very quiet both around the site and on the site even though it was nearly full.
There are good facilities (showers, sinks, toilets, washing up), a laundry that we didn't try, and well appointed shop. Some might say that £1.70 for a small loaf is expensive but given the amount of trade they probably do and the cost of getting stuff to the site I doubt the NT are making much on it.
I would come back here in an instant, with the whole family.
The only niggle is its takes soo long to get here, but then if it was easier to reach it would be many times busier.
There are quite a few attractions near by for the family, although to get to most of the rest of the Lakes is quite a journey in itself.
