We stayed here in our motorhome for a week in September 2015. Our booking was altered due to major work being done on the site. This meant we had to change pitches partway through the week. We were meeting friends for their first experience of staying in a motorhome, so wanted it to be really food for them. They also had to change pitches during their stay, and although staff were extremely helpful, it was still inconvenient.
Shower block and toilets were closed for a refit, so we had to walk down to the rather tired (and not always clean) toilet and shower block by the main complex. I hope the other shower/toilet block is also going to have a refit - it certainly needs it.
Due to our being inconvenienced, we were given a £20 voucher to use in the restaurant, and so took advantage of this, enjoying an extremely good meal with excellent service. Shame that there is always a vague smell of swimming pool in there though.
The weekend entertainment event including a 2 course meal for £15 was excellent value for money too. Although the Abba tribute band was only OK, we still had a really good night with disco and dancing.
Not always a site for peace and quiet, as it is large and caters for families and groups, but we will return having visited four or five times. So much about it is good and enjoyable. Not least the pool/sauna and jacuzzi which is free - unlike at some other sites.
There are also lovely walks and safe cycle tracks direct from the site, and we also had a most enjoyable trip on the Dean Forest Railway. The two nearest pubs are also good - both offering food, although we didn't try it. Good beer though!

We spent a relaxing three nights at this site in August. It was the summer holidays and so we expected it to be busy and of course it was. The swimming pool was clean and nice, if a little cold on a couple of days. The sauna and steam room were both nice. The changing village was tired and the toilets were dirty. I did see a member of staff attempting to clear the pooled water from the floor though. The showers were clean enough but not nearly enough of them to cater for all the swimmers at peak times. The shop on site was small but functional. The restaurant was competitively priced and the food was good. The service was actually very good and efficient. At £38 a night in high season, this site is not cheap. However, for a relaxing break in the Forest of Dean, give it a go. Just be prepared for the toilets to be tired and sometimes smelly. The pitches were clean and tidy though, maybe a little scruffy round the edges. However, all said, we will certianly go again living reasonably local.

Scragged Oak is one of our favourite sites and the last time we stayed was in March when the new facility block was still under construction and well behind schedule. We were eager to see the finished article. But first we were greeted by the new managers who seemed friendly enough.
Sadly the facilities had on going problems, with signs up on various cubicles (which are actually wet rooms with loo, washbasin and shower) stating that the boiler was not working and no hot water. When later in the evening we went for a shower in the rooms that were meant to be working the water was cold. I informed the manager the following day plus there were issues with one of toilet flushes. The manager then tried all the cubicles with the ones with the signs up having hot water, but the ones that should have been hot were cold! The toilet must have also been an on going issue as she managed to immediately cure the problem. I got the impression that her patience with the facilities was wearing thin. Also wet rooms just do not work, the drainage isn't perfect and if you have slightly dirty feet this makes the cubicle look unclean.
Apart from these vital problems it is still a good site especially if you have a dog, as the walks from the site are wonderful.

We stayed for 4 nights camping. It started well with the staff being very friendly and helpful, the layout of the reception area seemed good and the signposts to our pitch was clear. The pitch was relatively flat (always a bonus) and a good size so all seemed good at that point.
The price of the site is significantly more than I would normally pay for camping, but we had family staying in the Bungalow and Lodges on the site.
My disappointments arose as the week commenced. Many of the ladies toilets were difficult to flush, in the morning it was common to come in to at least half the toilets being dirty. The washing up area was very small for the size of the site and I had to wait to wash up (at a non-peak time). I did find the additional block down by the swimming pool, but that was a rather extended walk with pots and pans. (Janex from Aug 13 also mentiond the toilet block - time for a refurb I think Whitemead!)
Finally and probably most disappointing was the frequency the bins nearest our pitch were emptied, frankly they weren't. The bins were full by the Weds of our stay, so by the Friday they were overflowing and totally unacceptable.
I did discover half way through our that our welcome pack had no information in it detailing the activities and events of the site. This was not such a worry for us as we were using the site more as a base to explore the area, I am sure this was just an oversight but it would have been good to know what was going on rather than have to rely on my family members to inform us.
My overall feeling at Whitemead is that campers are not catered for as well as those staying in the properties on the site.

We were due to stay here for 1 week with our 2 kids but we packed up a couple of nights early and left, partly due to the forecasted weather (didn't fancy putting the tent down in the rain) and partly due to being fed up with the noise levels at night. The noise was a real problem for us, Which is a great shame because the location & setting in the forest is lovely. The campsite seem to do do nothing about the noise (not even when I mentioned it to reception) and actually play a part in the problem with the disco blaring out till around 11pm. The main problem however are the noisy people coming back from the disco around midnight. I don't know whether we just got unlucky with our neighbours!
In addition to the noise, we were not impressed with the toilet/shower facilities either. A number of toilets didn't flush properly, I had to move showers as the one I was in just dribbled out and the cleaners seemed to struggle to keep on top of the cleanliness with large puddles of water being a frequent issue in the gents.
On the plus side, the kids really liked the large playing field and the swimming pool.
I did find it odd that the bar on site did not permit dogs inside when the campsite is happy to have dogs.
In summary, this is not a campsite we will be returning too any time soon.

A quick one night stop to make the most of the cheaper rate (£16pn).
A lovely stay with my sister and our children ranging in age from 1-11.
Playground - now a little limited for my 11 year old - a second adventure playground for the older age groups would be lovely.
Toilets and dishwashing - clean and tidy with plenty of hot water.
Changing rooms at pool - bit whiffy - cleaning was taking place but the piles of 'bits' needed picking up, not just to be swept into one pile.
Entertainment - check theme of kids disco - pirates & princesses on our visit - and bring along fancy dress - otherwise you too will have a disappointed three year old when everyone else has their Elsa dress on!
Overall - great for slightly younger children than mine whatever the weather (they have mini soft play & kids disco), but for a 9 & 11 year old it's a bit limited unless they're happy to play football all day - 9 year old had to be supervised in the pool by an adult in the water so that was not an all day activity.

Great site, 90%decent pitches some need a lot of levelling
Location great
Nice pool, good facilities, entertainment good for little kids other entertainment could do with work
Be careful of road from Lyndney the weather this winter has killed it.
Join the CSMA if possible ( civil servants/ teachers etc or family ) makes it much more reasonable price wise

Great Site, having been going for years (10+), over the years have always valued this as one of the best sites to return to for a weekend, being only 30~40 mins away and no motorway traffic (or any really for my journey).
Being a CSMA member, this was also one of the cheapest sites to visit but BEWARE you'd be surprised how expensive it is these days, costs have gradually crept up and up. Even in low season it was in region of £30/night
Facilities are 1st class, love the leisure, outdoor spaces and wine bar, not eaten in the restaurant for several years as the pub up the road has been refurbished and offers very good value and great food and drinks.
Being critical, the facilities could do with their 10 year refresh / paint / modernisation as starting to looked aged and a bit untidy (that's a bit harsh as they're still clean and good but you know what I mean if you'd visited when they were pristine and better than most sites).
TV signal generally poor, top field high up is bearable but you don't really need the TV here !
Having caravan dealers nearby (round the corner & in Coleford) means all accessories are obtainable and you can look for your next purchase !
Lydney has as many shops as you need but on site Londis means you can park up and not get in the car for your stay if you'd prefer. Big supermarkets in Coleford as well.
Cycle centre is very close and a nice park area on right hand side at cross roads just before this. Take the bikes and there is some nice woodland cycling from the site past FofD caravans.
I will always continue to return, once, twice a season, the current costs don't justify me visiting more as don't use the leisure facilities as much as I would with younger kids in the party.
(one last thing - can be a very noisy late at night with drunken folk returning from entertainment)

This was our third caravan visit to this site and we spent a week there. There are a number of reasons why we keep coming back. First of all the large indoor pool and sauna. We used both every day. Then there is the direct access to the forest. Miles of walks in any direction, great for dogs and we spotted 5 wild boar close to the site. There are also family friendly off road cycle trails through the forest direct from the site. We always try to fit in a canoe trip down the River Wye. We can recommend Symonds Yat canoe hire. They’ll drop you off at Ross on Wye and you can take all day to drift downstream back to their base at Symonds Yat West. Also we always visit Symonds Yat rock to watch the Peregrine Falcons. The site gets very busy at weekends but there is still a great atmosphere amongst all the tents and caravans. Although we had reserved a grass pitch, we changed our minds and chose a hard standing. Many of the grass pitches are poorly drained and get very muddy from other people’s ground sheets.

Centre Parcs meets camping?
This is a large commercial site geared for both villa rentals and camping with leisure pool, gym, restaurant/pub, and function suite. The site is set at the Southern end of the Forest of Dean just outside the pretty village of Parkend and has direct access to the forest with its numerous walks and off road cycle routes.
The site has two main camping areas 29 pitches in ‘The Dell’ – not ideal as these are surrounded by trees and villas, or the better placed ‘The Meadows/Hollow/Mead’ with open aspects and larger pitches.
Toilet block is functional but utilitarian, not up to the standard set elsewhere on the site.
Ideal for families with loads for the kids to do, but the function room is used as a commercial venue of weddings and the like and the management put a lovely note in the rules warning of ‘noise pollution’ that can be generated from the Venue which will ‘usually’ cease at 11. 30pm, or midnights on Saturdays. It is noisy and you will be kept awake!
Nice location, ideal as midweek site when kids are in school if you don’t have kids in the party, or weekend site if you do!
