We spent a great week at Whitemead Forest Park (2 adults and 2 children 8 & 11). The pitches for tourers were excellent, hard standing gravel, excellent size and well spaced. We were in the Dell area which was great, near to the toilet/shower block and main centre with swimming pool etc. Toilets/showers were fine and always clean.
The pool and changing rooms were excellent, well laid out and the kids loved the splashtime with floats etc every day. We ate in the restaurant for breakfast and dinner on occasions and both were lovely. There were also snacks available in the bar which were also good. (not the cheapest bar prices but hey you are in the middle of a forest !)
The site itself really is in the forest, on one occasion at night passing 3 deer on the way to the toilets says it all ! There is NO mobile phone signal so you really do get away from it all but wi-fi is available in the main building if your missing technology too much.
The site is also in a good location for sightseeing, Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Dean Forest Steam Railway, Butterfly farms, Castles the list goes on all within a half hour or less.
I can imagine it gets very busy during main school holidays but it never felt too crowded while we were there. Entertainment is on each Friday and Saturday in the Venue and every night during school holidays. We were very pleased with our week at Whitemead and will be going back.

We arrived late (and tired) but were received warmly and helpfully; the manager(?), Angela, went out of her way to make us feel at home. We were left to choose our own site in a large grassy arena mostly surrounded by trees. The perimeter was sloping but this didn't seem to have deterred several campers with tents - perhaps they needed the shade of the trees. Most of the sites were on the grass but there were several hard-standing places, the one we chose affording fine views over the surrounding countryside.
The toilet facilities were very modern and well maintained. We didn't sample the restaurant (open for breakfast as well as supper) nor the swimming-pool, but I'd be very surprised if they were not as clean, comfortable and comprehensively equipped as were the toilet facilities.
For those who like a visit to the pub, a short walk will bring them to the 'Woodman', a place where there's good beer and food. For anyone wanting a longer walk, there's the Forest of Dean. The Nagshead Nature Reserve is especially worth a visit.
This is an excellent site, well equipped and situated in beautiful sylvan surroundings.

A lovely site. Well spread out so you didn't feel on top of everyone else. We have an extra large tent (large 8-man) and as long as we didn't park the car alongside we didn't have to pay for two pitches, which was good.
There was a large expanse of lawn behind the pool/entertainment complex which was perfect for ball games, water fights and running about.
The pool was good, but the changing rooms could do with a re-jig. There was a lot of standing water so you really needed to be careful where you put your stuff. Also no shoes were allowed in the changing rooms, which is fine, but it really made for a nasty bottleneck at the entrance (a small flight of steps) where everyone was trying to take-off/put on shoes.
We didn't sample the entertainment, so can't comment on that.
The only downside was the noisy neighbours we had (but the site can't do a great deal about that) and also some who had a million lights (fairy lights, spotlights you name it) on the outside of their caravan which they didn't turn off and kept us awake at night.
Overall, a super site with plenty of facilities and in a beautiful location!

This is a great site in a splendid 'forest clearing’ location. We came with a three year old.
The pool was wonderful with a hot spa and steam room and sauna. The kids soft play area is small and was well used.
There are two shower blocks, the one nearer the play area was the oldest and starting to look a little tired but most importantly it was clean.
The restaurant is reasonably priced and we enjoyed good quality food and drink.
All in all a brilliant weekend in a well-managed and clean site. We will definitely return.

Just returned from a fabulous four day break to whitemead forest park in the forest of dean. What a brilliant place for kids and adults. Myself and my husband are not into holiday parks ( butlins haven etc)we are also not a massive fan of oversized animals with humans inside them pretending to the kids that they are friendly, nor evening and tribute acts. This site appears to have the right level of both children's entertainment and adult entertainment which does not impinge on your enjoyment of your break.
During half term it did have all of the above mentioned plus daytime activites for the children as well such as jewellery making, cheerleading arts and crafts ( nominal charges ) also free activities splashtime in the pool, treasure hunting, family football cricket and rounders.
The whole park it self was very well maintained albeit very boggy due to the recent snow fall but all the public places were spotless and not full of mud, including the pool changing rooms which they asked you to take outside footware off at the door ( take a clean pair of flip floops).
The pool it self was lovely it was approx 30 degrees most days and didn't appear full to capacity, splash time for the kids involed large floats being put in the pool, my daughter enjoyed this. There is a smaller baby pool also and two jacuzzi's which were lovely. A steam room and a sauna which you can use anytime.
There is also a full gym which we didn't use but looked well equiped.
The on site beauty treatment room is also lovely I had a hot stone massage and a facial for valentines.
The foresters resurant which is located on site is available for breakfast lunch and tea and is reasonably priced we ate a evening meal there which was very enjoyable.
The area is an outstanding area of beauty which has somethig for everyone walking cycling and just chillin!
Tescos and coop are located about 10 mins in car in town of lydney, but I saw tesco's doing grocery deliveries to the site so that is an good idea!
To sum our trip up, . Brilliant!

Agree with other comments, the grass pitches were very waterlogged and made for muddy vans and loos.
However, we found the facilities were fine. Luckily it was pretty quiet when we were there so no problems with other campers.
Food was decent in the restaurant, not great but better than anticipated. Do think the bar area needs looking at, the seating was very oddly spaced and we kept struggling to find a table for 4.
Pool area really nice, spent a nice morning floating about. Also had a back massage in the spa and was impressed with the service and price. Fixed my awful bad back courtesy of expanding baby bump and will be forever grateful! Also a nice touch to have board games for hire.
Generally impressed and looked to return but were quoted £30 a night for November 2012 which has put us off, shame because with the trees turning colour it was just gorgeous around there.

Just returned from a fabulous 2 week holiday at Whitemead, we will be booking for next year with all our family.
Cannot praise the site, the staff and the whole holiday experience enough.
We found all the pitches to be big enough so that you could enjoy your holiday without feeling on top of your neighbour.
We took our 3 Grandchildren for their 1st holiday without Mum & Dad, they thoroughly enjoyed the whole time.
We went swimming every day, and they absolutely loved the live animal show. The guy who brought the animals was so good, he involved all the children and was so informative about the animals. But mostly he made it fun and educational all at the same time.
Also the falconry display was interesting, and again the children have the opportunity to hold the birds.
The beauty of this site is that once you have paid your pitch fees, ( which are really reasonable ) most of the activities and shows are free. You could quite easily just stay on site and be very happy, but the location of this site is just perfect with so much to do within a short distance.
We had a wonderful day at The Maze & Butterfly Farm about 9 miles away, also the Sculpture Trail is worth going to which was only about 2 miles away.
Also many people brought their own bicycles and canoes, as the forest of dean is perfect for these activities, again just minutes away.
Tesco seemed to be the largest supermarket, about 8 miles away. There was a good Launderette just opposite tesco's.
We only had a couple of niggles, but nothing that will stop us going back again. The area where water pipes are situated could be improved, with concrete because at the moment with grass and stones it is very wet underfoot whilst filling aqua roll.
And we felt washing machines & dryers ( only 2 ) had seen better days!
But overall a fantastic place, and exceptional value for money!

Our first time at this campsite. We are grandparents and had a 6 and 5 year old with us - they thought they'd arrived in heaven!
They loved the swimming pool, the playground, the fact that they could cycle everywhere, but best of all they loved Dan the evening compère, he was brilliant and in our view the park's greatest asset, we had a job tearing them away at 9. 30 each evening - at home they are usually in bed by 7. 30.
We too loved the swimming pool, especially splashtime, and the evening entertainment, the Panto, the Tropical animal show and one of the afternoons there was a Falconry show, both of which allowed children, and adults to be very hands-on and just watching Dan amusing the children, especially doing the Limbo! Poor old Sammy and Harry earn their money too.
The campsite itself is lovely, not too big or overcrowded and masses of open spaces.
The caravan pitches were big - about Caravan Club size, with plenty of water and waste points. The food in the Foresters Restaurant was very good quality and large portions. Kids under 12 ate a main course free. Got a seat almost immediately. It doubles as a cafe during the day, but we didn't use it so can't comment.
I used the beauty facilities a couple of times, very good service and the girls are lovely, would have liked a treatment everyday! Didn't use the gym but it looked well equipped.
We only left the site 3 times in the week we were there - to visit Puzzlewood, a brilliant place especially with youngsters, there are no marked paths as such, a real magical place full of moss covered rocks and bridges and gullies, but I guess it could be very slippy when wet.
Clearwell Caves was also very interesting but for us not as much as Puzzlewood. The other departure from the site took us on a 12 mile circular bicycle ride through the forest, accessible from the campsite. The 'easiest' way is clockwise - although one or two long drags, it is nowhere as steep as going the otherway.
If you're not up to the full trip, its a nice ride up to Beechenhurst Lodge and then take a walk around the Sculpture trail.
There is absolutely no O2 phone coverage and judging by the fact we never saw anyone using their phones, I think very little coverage with other networks either! There is free wifi in the public areas. We didn't use a TV but we heard mixed reports about reception, usually none!
There wasn't anywhere to freeze freezer blocks, I would have thought a must when camping, especially a tent. The tumble dryer in the Dell facilities block wasn't working and judging by the condition of the note on top had not been so for some time.
The shop didn't have any fresh vegetables, so your choices are the Spar at Bream (less than 2 miles away) - don't be tempted to cycle there, it is one long steep hill, or Tesco in Lydney (3+ miles away).
We will definitely be going back again

Just back from the hottest weekend for ages and what a fantastic site.
The staff were all fantastic, very friendly and helpful - no false smiles here, they all had a genuine desire to look after visitors.
The Grounds - massive field for running wild, and direct access into the Forest of Dean for lovely walks. Kids loved playing on rope swings in the forest. I am certain we heard Wild Boar whilst walking the forest paths, just a shame we didn't get a glimpse, but with non-stop chat from a 10 yrs old and 5 yrs old, no surprise really.
Leisure Facilities - superb.
All free in with the cost of your pitch - lovely swimming pool, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi & gym.
Eats'n'drinks - Restaurant did nice food. (& has offers - kids eat free for each paying adult between 5pm-8pm), cafe, bar (non-intrusive disco's / entertainment laid on for kids and grown ups, but I didn't hear any noise at my caravan)
Outdoors - Badminton net, football goals, table tennis all there and good fun. Fantastic views
(NB- there is a climbing tower & zip slide on site. They didn't open whilst we were there, but I am told the company that runs them is struggling with the recession and they may open again. Pity, it is the same company that runs the archery / shooting / laser activities. Check with the site, I was told by another tourer and didn't verify this with staff!)
Showers & Toilets - The block we used was a little dated, the lights go out when you are on the loo, & I wasn't taking a newspaper in with me so wasn't that long.
Showers were always hot, but could do with updating for a little more power.
These aren't complaints though, & they were always nice and clean.
Shop - go stocked up, or be prepared to drive a couple of minutes into Lydney for supplies. It's okay for milk and a few essentials, but it is very basic. (Kids liked it as it had an array of cheap toys- the kind you give to the jumble when they aren't looking - and ice lollies. )
Furhter afield - canoeing down the Wye with Symonds yacht canoes, visit the City of Gloucester - & loads more all reachable by car. Steam engines at Lydney walking distance. Pub is a couple of minutes walk out of the gates.
This was our favourite site in the UK so far. A fantastic site well worth several return visits. 10 out of 10, even if you do have to sort out your ablutions in the dark periodically.

We have stayed at this site a few times now, and every stay is the same, awesome !
You can have a pitch with upto 6 people and dogs and it will cost the same, including showers, pool, steam room, sauna, jacuzzi, all included in the price, there are no extra costs for the dog or awnings.
Every Wednesday there is a free guided walk through the forest, and dogs are more than welcome, if you like the outdoors or a bit of luxury this is the site for you.
The cafe during the day has a nice selection of snacks and meals. The staff are always polite and friendly, and when my car broke down on site they were more than helpful.
A must if you stay is to visit Little dean jail a short drive away, it is a private collection museum, 'crime throughout time'. I cannot think of a single bad thing to say about this site.
