This site is one of the best private camp sites that we have been to. The toilets and showers were very clean and warm. The outside space was well set out and was very tidy. The facilities at this camp site were outstanding everything catered for.

We did not know that there wasn't a television signal via aerial but there is a plug in system that gave a lovely picture. The owners on the site loaned us a cable at no cost and they couldn't have been more helpful.

We would recommend this site to anybody going to the Isle of Lewis for a holiday.

The owner were cheerful and approachable fantastic

This site is convenient for visiting some of the main attractions on Lewis itself which many believe is not over-blessed with good campsites. Our hard standing pitch was well served by EHU, fresh water, grey waste and a TV point - none of which failed once during our stay (see other reviews). Such serviced pitches are few and far between yet very welcome when available - especially in very wet weather. The arrangement in getting a key for the 'unlimited shower' was a bit old hat and irritating (why not include it in the price)and the facilities were, as others have remarked, tired and dated. We did not use the kitchen or laundry. The area between pitches is not generous, nor is it clear for which pitch it is provided; and the open, ground level, chemical waste disposal was a little more public than one might desire. Having said all this, a conveniently located site with some well serviced pitches, and decent views, owned by friendly and accommodating people is not to be sniffed at in Lewis and providing we could get the same pitch again we would certainly return.

This is a small friendly site, the hardstandings are a little close together with a narrow strip of 'plastic grass' to separated them, most have EHU with some also having a TV aerial point as well (first TV signal we'd picked up in the Outer Hebrides lol) There are 2 toilet & shower blocks, the newer (which was closer to our pitch) was named 10 Downing st ! and was clean with unlimited showers for £1 (you pay for the loan of the key to the shower room) There is a laundry on site which although cost £7 for a full load to wash & dry was very welcome as we had been on the road for so long ! there is also a communal kitchen dining area. There is not a lot around the site and the town of Shawbost has no pub, shop or restaurant ! the sea is about a mile from the site. One evening during our stay we did hear a pair of corn crakes in the grass behind our pitch.

Small site with clean but dated facilities.

The owner is very helpful and the facilities are clean but dated. The old block with the 50p showers is clean but cramped. The water is hot and 50p was plenty time enough for us to shower. Didn't try the deluxe version - the £1 unlimited shower in the newer more spacious block.

The washing up area in the kitchen is also cramped but hot water and if you are camping there is a microwave and people were sitting around eating and chatting. We noticed 2 cyclists with enormous pizzas which they had got from a takeaway called Forty North 3 miles down the road towards Stornoway. You need to order and they are only open limited hours but great food.

The site is cramped and outfits are not turned away but squeezed on.

There is a good round walk from the site down to a lovely beach and back or you can also walk round the cliffs. It is a short drive down the coast to explore the Calanish stones and the Norse mill just down the road is well worth a visit

I think the cost of the site should include the shower but perhaps the charges encourage those who can use their own facilities to do so and keep the pressure off the limited facilities.

I do think that some of the units were squeezed in too close to one another but then sites are limited and the owner puts helpfulness and hospitality before practicality.

This site is like pitching in someone yard. The hard standings are very close together with what looked like AstroTurf between them. Campers and tents were turning up during the evening and being squeezed on to all sorts of spaces, one up against the house. The shower was clean but small and 50p for about four minutes. You can pay for a key to another shower room and take as long as you like. Hook ups cost £4 and came with a screw driver so that when the electrics went off you can open them up and switch them back on. Ours went off at least six times during the evening and early morning. There was nowhere to walk the dog apart from along the road.

The kitchen area was quite small, although it did also have an eating area which the campers seemed to use.

It has a waste water disposal point and chemical disposal point, although it felt a bit odd emptying the toilet right next to a VW camper that had been put right behind it.

This is not a site I would recommend.

Site is a little tired and dated, I went for the deluxe shower option for the cost of a £1. 00. It was ok. Everything is locked up after 11:00.

The pitch was good, reasonably flat, reasonably well mown and the ground amazing for pegs. It actually seemed to suck the pegs in such was the grip. There was nowhere to eat at all unless you are prepared to drive some distance. There is a take away that about 3miles that operate very differently to what you may be used to, but the quality is exceptional.

I found Lewis to be a bit of a strange place.

Because I was cycling I was moving at a pace whereby you've time to look, and I could not help but notice the amount of litter, casually, it seems, tossed out of car windows. I estimate that every 10 - 15 meters there was rubbish laying by the roadside.

The advantage to this was that wind direction could be estimated by the way the polythene was blowing on the barbed wire fences.

Probably won't be returning to Lewis.

Excellent site with hardstandings. Ehu and water adjacent to each pitch. Shower blocks very clean although showers require payment. Noise from campers during 1 night disturbed the peace but this is not the norm as groups of campers are not accepted. Beach about 1. 5 miles away but excellent dog walking next to site (in field if no sheep about).

The owners are very friendly and helpful, and will do their best to make your stay comfortable.

We would recommend this site to any travellers taking timeout in Lewis.

Of all the sites we've ever stayed in this was the worst. It's basically in the owners backyard and garden and pitch 10 looks directly into their bungalow. The first hardstanding pitch we were given was a long narrow one and when we reversed back on to it the caravan started sinking! We asked if we could move and the owner agreed. The old toilet block is extremely dated (50 years out of date) and if you want to go to the toilet you have to literally sit on the toilet before you can shut the door. The newer block (Downing Street) is more spacious but poorly decorated and the light switches are strangely taped over in an attempt to stop you switching them on (no idea why)! The showers in this block are £1 and you have to go to the bungalow to get the key to the door and then return it after. Other buildings on site that house the washing machine and drier and the fridge where the milk is kept are a variety of different portacabins. Other reviewers have said there was a good dog walk but we never found it and the owners didn't tell us where it was - we went to the local beach every day. The two most worrying things about this site were the electric hook ups and the campers kitchen. Our electric hook up repeatedly tripped. The owner had warned us when we arrived that others using that electric box had had the same problem but told us to simply unscrew the cover to the hook up point and flick the switch. We hadn't had any problem elsewhere on the islands but it went 3 times. My husband duly unscrewed the cover to the box only to comment later that the wiring looked very 'Heath Robinsonish'. Our other concern was the safety within the campers kitchen. There was a very old 2 burner hob with an even older rusty kettle on it and the fire blanket hadn't been checked since 2008. The cover on this was mouldy so make of this what you will. We left earlier than intended having not asked for a refund and none was offered. Other sites in the Outer Hebrides we visited were modern, clean and much cheaper. We definitely wouldn't go back to this site.

As a location to explore this area of Lewis the site is satisfactory. The owners were very welcoming and helpful. The costs were comparable to all the other sites we used throughout the Outer Hebrides but in that context the site and facilities did not compare. The hot water in the good utility area seemed to be on the assumption that no hot water was required to wash dishes before around 10am or later. The womens facilities had no curtains on the side window (visible to all) or any shield/curtain if one only wished to wash rather than pay for shower use and the heating to the area appeared to be repeatedly turned off despite the weather. For the comparable price of other sites within the Outer Hebrides visited some upgrade would be of value.

This campsite was great. It rained almost constantly during our trip to the Outer Hebrides, the availability of a little kitchen and dining room really made a difference for us. We bought dinner from Forty North (just down the road) and ate in the warm and dry :) We were also able to have a hot breakfast and coffee the next morning as a kettle and hotplate are provided.

The owner was friendly and helpful and even sold us a pint of milk as ours had gone off (shops seem to be few and far between).

The toilet facilities were basic but adequate and the water was nice and hot.
