Just returned from a two week camping stint at three sites around the South, Riverside being the first of the three.
Our first contact with the couple running here we found them very pleasant and we were given the choice of a sunny pitch or a more sheltered one. We picked the sunny one but with all the sun we got (only rained once) it may have been better picking the sheltered pitch.
Most of the pitches seemed level or just slightly sloping with some that were more of a slope not being used but it may be a slight problem for some in peak times.
Apart from a couple of small one man tents, we were the only tent here with the other being an even mix of caravans and motorhomes.
There is a newish block of toilets and showers, 3 each of showers for men and 3 for the ladies with 4 toilets for men and 4 for ladies. All of these were always clean everytime we visited them.
This was used as a base to visit the Wartime Farm and Portsmouth Historic Docks.

Overall we liked the site, especially its proximity to the lovely village of Hamble. The site appeared well run, we were efficiently welcomed and directed to our pitch. We liked the close proximity of the porta cabin loos (spotlessly clean) and the main loos, wash up facilities and showers were only a short distance away and again spotlessly clean.
Less positive is the constant rumble of the M27. Having asked on enquiry about road noise I was told the site was on a lane leading down to the Marina (true and very quiet). What I hadn't expected to hear was the M27 which I thought was some miles distant but in fact as the motorway crosses the River it comes closer to the village and campsite. This wasn't apparent during the day with general campsite hub hub but noticeable during the night. The other negative was our pitch (29) was sited adjacent to the Marina and unfortunately for us had a large lampost emitting an orange light during the night right by our pitch. For those in a campervan or caravan this may be less of a problem but for us it kept us awake, along with the M27 noise all night long. Additionally one very selfish group of campers (there aren't many but we were unlucky) either returned or restarted their 'party' at 2am - loud voices, laughing etc. This wouldn't be a problem at any time up until say 11pm but with most campers retiring to bed relatively early and getting up early it was thoughtless of them and there appeared to be no one to monitor/address this.
We only stayed one night (planned) and while we are likely to return for the aforementioned lovely village, spotless loos etc we'd try to position us closer to the site entrance to avoid the M27 noise and light.

Just returned from super bank holiday break at Riverside. Very good location. Staff helpful and park nicely presented. I agree with one reviewer who commented that the grey waste water disposal require the container to be lifted 18 inches to empty it. Not easy if there are 30 ltrs or so of contents.
The site was full over the bank holiday week end and that I fear was the crux of the problem because during the time we were there I feel that we must have had 15 power cuts caused according to the staff by heaters being switched on as temperatures dropped in the evening. Whatever the cause I think it not acceptable. I have been on much larger sites with similar temperatures and had no issues.
Would I return ? Probably but would hope for warm weather so that the power losses did not happen.

Enjoyed our 1 week visit to this site. Good location, very good facilities and well informed and helpful staff. One minor complaint! There is no place to dispose of grey water waste except by using the chemical waste disposal point, which is fine for it's purpose but not when you need to lift a full container of waste water some 18 inches above the ground. Be very careful approaching the site along Satchel Lane. If you miss the turning into the Mercury boat yard and are towing a caravan, you will need to do a grand tour of Hamble to get back to the site. Needless to say, that is exactly what we did!

We have just returned from visiting this site for the first time. What a lovely site. Everywhere spotlessly clean. Hamble is a mile away. Lovely cafe there overlooking the harbour. Beautiful place to sit and relax and watch the many boats. Many thanks to the site managers at riverside. We will most certainly return here again. The harbour restaurant is just down the road and has a terrace which enjoys such lovely views.

We have just had a 3 night stay at Riverside, we thought the site was great, very clean.
The toilet and shower block were spotless.
One of the cleanest I have seen on a campsite.
Our pitch was good too, If I had 1 grumble, it would be that the small island we were on only had us and 1 other tent, the other tent was allocated right next to us, whilst other pitches nearby were empty.
Maybe just 1 pitch away would have been better when it is not busy, just to give you a bit more privacy.
There are no play facilities for children,
Although the marina is nice and only a 2 minute walk.
We used this site as a base to visit the surrounding areas
Perfect location,
Despite the small grumble about allocation of pitches, we would definitely use this site again.

Great site and great helpful wardens, even to the point where Aubrey gave us a lift to the station - many thanks!
Despite the weather and the fact that a lot of the pitches were waterlogged, they helped us to find the last dryish pitch.
Great location, Hamble Square is about 15 min walk and has a Co-op and some lovely pubs and restaurants and regular bus into Southampton. Also there is a good bar/restaurant (Waters Edge) at the marina next door.
Would definitely return.

Just wanted to say what a fab time we had at Riverside once again. We celebrated the jubilee at the campsite with our own street party (us and friends on two other pitches)and luckily had a nice sunny day for it! We also went out early on the Tuesday morning to see the Queens Ships coming in and again late at night to see them go back out, there is a great viewing point about a mile down the road - Hamble Point.
The nine nights we stayed saw mixed weather which included two days of rain and gale force winds, however none of this ruined our time at Riverside. We were happy playing cards and scrabble and drinking Pimms with our friends!
The staff all go above and beyond to help with anything and are always extremely friendly.
I love this campsite and was very sad to have to pack up and go home, as were our friends. Will be counting down the days until my next visit in July!
Thank you for always making us feel so welcome

Smallish site. Lower field is mainly used for touring and there is a separate area for seasonal pitches.
We arrived just after a torrential downpour, and the warden showed us to the least waterlogged pitch in the lower field. We backed the van in, but the wheels immediately sank in, forcing us to pull forward onto firmer ground. 4 wheel drive was most definitely needed to get the caravan out!
We found an empty seasonal pitch higher up which was far firmer and asked to be moved there. The friendly wardens obliged and we spent a few nights at the site, extending our booked stay from 2 to 4 nights.
We did get a lot of heavy downpours, and the water did come up through the awning carpet making things a bit wet underfoot. On the whole though, we were not too badly off. Other pitches really flooded badly. I saw one family jumping up and down in muddy puddles inside their awning! Obviously true Peppa Pig fans! ( by the way, visit Peppa Pig world a 20 minute drive away, great fun, but a bit expensive).
The local village of Hamble le Rice is lovely, with good parking, and a variety of pubs on the walk down to the waterfront. There is a co-op in the village selling most basic essentials, or if you need more choice then there is a really big Tesco as you come off the M27. Hamble also has a good and very popular Indian takeaway.
We enjoyed this site. The wardens and the fellow caravanners were very friendly. We would happily return, but only if the forecast is dry! This site is lovely and quiet, and safe for kids to cycle around, although there are no play facilities.
The facilities are good. The lower field has a portable cabin type block with an elsan point around the back. There is also a very good wooden facilities block by the upper seasonal pitches with excellent huge individual shower rooms, ideal for families. The water pressure is great, and temperature is nice and hot.
I thought the site fee was a bit pricey at 27. 50 a night, although it was peak season.

Generally OK. Though it was not helped that over Easter we had biblical rain before we arrived, so the field where the portable cabin (other set of toilets and showers) is placed was quite saturated, and we were not offered A) anywhere else or B) hardstanding - though I think any hard standing was already in use.
There is a circular track outside the other toilet block, which was flooded and pot holed. Only a few bags of gravel required to sort that out, as it made the whole site look run down.
We tried the portable cabin toilets on first morning. OK, clean enough but virtually open showers, not great considering we are now in 2012. The next morning, we tried the wood cabin block for showering. Indeed, better, but I would not say 'new' - as other visitors have said. I would say this block was built in the mid 1980s.
The shower rooms, (2 for ladies 2 for men) were indeed large, but little touches were not picked up on. Inside the shower cubicle, there is nowhere to put shower gel, soap, flannel, etc, and one of the (gents) rooms, there was no plug for the sink. So quite hard work to shave. The light comes on, via a sensor, and the room was quite dark, plus the over basin light did not work. Again, such simple things to make the 'experience' that bit better. A brighter bulb, a plug, a soap dish, all cheap things to make so much difference.
Hamble is a great place, very 'boaty' and some great pubs. For the site in general, the charges were a lot for what you got.
