I'm 56 years old but this was my first camping trip. And oh what fun it was.
Penmarlam is a lovely site. Our pitch was a good, spacious size, separated from the next one with a little hedge. As soon as one camper left, the grass was mowed ready for the next one.
The toilets/showers were extremely clean and lovely and warm. The ladies also had a hairdryer.
Sinks for washing your dishes were good.
As far as I know, all pitches have electric hook-up. Just make sure you have a long lead as ours was quite some metres away.
There is an on-site shop open between 9am - 12 noon and then again from 5pm - 7pm. They have almost anything you might possibly need and their prices are very reasonable.
We were only there for 2 nights so didn't get around much. The Old ferry Inn in Boddinick is a nice pub with decent food. Across the water is the lovely Fowey (Ferry cost £4 each way for a car with
Driver and one) passenger). We ate at 'The Lugger'. Excellent food and quite reasonable prices, and friendly staff.
All in all we had a lovely weekend break and would not hesitate to return to this campsite. In fact I'm looking forward to the next time.

We love this site so much we've been 3 years running!
It's fab for families as it's safe & easy for children to make friends. A lovely walk down to a café & marina where the best crabbing in Cornwall can be had & another walk to a nice old pub for a drink while overlooking Fowey. You must be fit to walk back up the hill though!
The shop has a good stock of produce including local beers & ciders & the facilities are nice & clean. Can catch the ferry across to Fowey which is a lovely village.

Visited this site for ten days the first two weeks of the school holidays, so was expecting it to be crowded and possibly noisy, but it was peaceful and plenty of room for everyone.
The shop was stocked with everything you could need and was reasonably priced. The toilet and shower block was exceptional and was jet washed everyday. Not once did I see empty toilet rolls or soap. The washing up facilities were under a shelter, which was handy on occasions! The only fault regarding the above was lazy campers who didn't clean up after themselves!
The pitch sizes were good and you can park your cars next to your tent. The grass was cut as soon as people moved and the site was keep beautifully tidy by the staff.
The WIFI was a bit hit and miss but when you are on holiday do you really need it?
The quay was lovely however the aerial view on the web site does not show the very steep hill that you have to go down, which is ok, but coming back up required oxygen!
We enjoyed a couple of lovely meals at the The Jubilee Inn at Penlyt about 7 miles away and sampled pasties at Fowey over the ferry, which was £4. 60 each way a bit pricey but fun, you can always drive round which takes approximately 15 mins.
We travelled down some really hairy small lanes, thanks to the sat nav, to Looe, St Austell, Bodmin, Polperro, the Lizard and St Michaels Mount each worth a visit.
St Austell has a Tesco's, Morrison's and Asda so you can get any food you need, but would recommend The Premier store in Penlyt, lovely butchers inside and also the butcher, by the church, in Fowey great for BBQ's.
Lovely site all round, Staff polite and caring come round everyday to see that you are okay and can they help with anything.

Tidy site in quiet location about a fifteen minute walk to the village (uphill on the way back!). Old Ferry Inn had good beer & food. My only criticisms would be that the advertised wifi was pretty flaky & unusable most of the time & the 3M distances between units were not enforced. Well stocked shop & toilets / showers that were kept clean. If it's wet you may like to consider using mats or boards to park, we did see one motorhome stuck as the pitches are mostly grass.

This was our first visit to Penmarlam but it won't be our last. The people are so friendly and helped us out enormously when we arrived and found our tent was ruined. They lent us their's with no charge.
Thank you for your kindness. The toilet block is one of the best I've seen. The showers are amazing. The shop is well stocked with everything you will ever need. The site is so clean and well maintained. Fowey is lovely with great pubs and restaurants and we all loved the late night ferry across the estuary. The walk back to the site is uphill so be prepared! Take the route they recommend or you will need oxygen by the time you get back on site! The food at the 'King of Prussia' is to die for so go their and you will love it.
The car ferry is £4. 60 one-way so in a week it adds up. We were a party of five adults and we spent over £50 in one week on the ferry alone!. You can drive around and this takes about 15 minutes.
I would thoroughly recommend this site. Its in my top 3 already.

Spent a week here. Lovely site, great surroundings. The owners and wardens were very friendly and kept the grounds immaculate. We were so impressed with how tidy the borders were between the pitches. The walk back up for the harbour is not for the faint hearted! There was nothing we could fault with this site, if I had to be really picky I would say the curtains around the showers didn`t contain the water in the tray very well and the direction of the showers was a bit out but nevertheless the water was adequate and very warm and very clean. Would highly recommend this site for a quiet retreat.

What a great site which is warm and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble for Marcus including getting goats milk for my children and storing it til it was needed. Lovely showers and toilets, kept very clean. Happy to welcome guests of ours staying elsewhere and even put a marquee up for the group we were with for our bbq.
Pub at the bottom of the hill is great but very steep hill back up. Beautiful area with car ferry to Fowey a must.

This site is a little gem, our third visit and cannot wait till the next. Lovely spacious pitches great shop on site selling everything you might need. The walk down to the ferry across to Fowey is a delight, take the advised route down, but take the road used by the cars coming back up, believe me it is a doddle compared to the other way. Toilets and showers spotless. Take a nice stroll down to the slipway right next to the site where there is a lovely Café selling home made cakes etc. Roll on next time

After not staying in a tent for over 26 years we stayed at this lovely campsite for 2 weeks and everything was as I expected from the previous reviews.
Our second week was during the Olympics and it did feel quieter than perhaps it would normally have been. It was extremely clean and well run, the shower blocks were never over stretched and there was always bags of hot water.
We pitched in the lower field which we felt was slightly flatter and more sheltered and were made very welcome. The shop has everything that you might need at short notice and I thought very reasonably priced compared to some.
The information room was very useful with daily weather forecasts and sea conditions for the sailors amongst us, a library, pamphlets on all local attractions and spare magazines to borrow.
People who had any complaints saw them dealt with immediately (our neighbours had left the showers in a mess and someone had been driving too fast near children).
The free range chickens provided daily entertainment- especially when they were found to be laying eggs under caravans and not in their nest boxes! My only concern that there isn't a space for children to play apart from around their plot.
The area is beautiful but you do feel quite isolated at times as most days we had to use the excellent Bodinnick ferry to get anywhere. If you like walking it is an excellent base but beaches are not as good or accessible as the north coast.
Having said that I would go there again for a quiet relaxing holiday.

We visited this site between 12th-23rd July 2012. Very quiet, peaceful, staff friendly, helpful.
The site shop needs to be seen to be believed! a virtual Alladins cave! Once the weather improved the site came into its own,
Would I go again? Yes. Would I recommend it? Yes.
The only downside was that there is no facilities for children, although we're Grandparents so it didn't affect us.
All in all an enjoyable relaxing stay
