We stayed at this site for 5 nights at the end of June in our folding caravan. We stayed in the upper field. The facilities are great. Modern, warm and clean with a good covered area for washing up. Infact having come from another not so good site it was a relief to come to Penmarlam with such friendly owners, good facilities and a great pub just down the road.
Asked if they sold something they didn't have in the shop, the owner said he was happy to get anything for us as he was going shopping. He then kept it in his fridge for us as needed which was really good.
The pub is a walk away with a good walk back up the hill but there are two routes so choose the easy one!
Great area to stay. We went over to Fowey on the car ferry just down the road and took the passenger ferry to Polruan. Looe just up the road and Polperro very beautiful.
Will visit again. I have only dropped a mark for child friendliness as no facilities for kids but ours made their own amusement.

This is a very clean and well run site. It is also quiet and peaceful. The shower block is the best I have ever come across. There is plenty of space between pitches, but the layout did feel a little regimented, but perhaps this was more to do with every pitch having an electric hookup than anything.
In truth, of the pitches available to us, we felt that all were just a little on the short side as we have a Montana 6 with extension. Once we were pitched there was little room to park the car. But with hindsight, we could have pitched the tent a foot or so further back, so partly our fault.
There is only one genuine criticism I have of the site and that is a lack of a play/open area. When the site is full there is nowhere for children to kick a ball or congregate and meet up so finding friends takes a litle longer.
It is a dog friendly site, but there was nowhere nearby to let the dog off of the lead. The fields are all full of livestock and the lane down to the harbour area has an overload of signs telling you to keep the dog on lead, clean up afterwards etc. If your dog likes to swim, the harbour is brilliant though once you get the dog there on a lead.
So all in all a highly recommended site with a couple of reservations.
If all I could do was tick boxes they would all be maximum stars.

We have to agree with all the positive comments about this lovely site. We just stayed for 5 nights with friends and family and had a great time.
They are friendly, helpful and efficient. The facilities are excellent, the pitches are well kept and plenty big enough. The shop is well stocked.
There are lovely walks on both sides of the river. You must go to the Old Ferry Inn for a roast - another friendly and helpful place, and the food is excellent.
Take the ferry to Fowey from Boddinick or Polruan, it's a lovely village.
The perfect place to relax!

What a great site!
The staff were very helpful, nice shop which stocked most of the things needed as well as being able to pre order newspapers for the whole time we stayed there.
Very clean showers and toilets and the site was kept up to a very high standard.
The daily rate for a fully serviced pitch was extremely good value for money.
There is a steep hill with a nice (but expensive for food ) pub at the bottom where you can jump on the ferry (car or by foot) which connects you to the town of Fowey.
There is another small road that leads down to a boatyard with a small but very nice cafe where you can get good food at reasonable prices.

We only stayed a couple of nights but the site was superb, we got the chance to pick our own pitch, which was 10 metres away from the shower block, which was immaculate. The pitch was well sheltered and quite flat. Being about 5 miles from the nearest main road the site was extremely quiet.
The wardens were very helpful and made us feel very welcome. The shop which was well stocked opened a couple of hours in the morning and a couple of hours in the evening, but if you required anything, the wardens were willing to open up.
The walk down to the pub was downhill and quite steep, so you can imagine the trek back after a couple of pints, but we managed it. Twice, seeing as the view was so nice, well that was my excuse anyway.
There is also a walk down to the quayside behind the site where there is a cafe serving some nice food, the dog also got to do some paddling.
We will definitely be coming back.

Stayed at this site for the second time this weekend. It's ideal for us as a 'shake-down' to check everything is working and that we put everything we need back on board.
That is because it is a lovely clean site with all the facilities you need and none of the ones we don't want. They are in a quiet country spot but with easy links to nearby towns and villages in a beautiful part of the world.
This review is just to reassure those of you that (like me) look for recent good reviews, that this site is still up to the wonderful standards spoken of in earlier reviews.
We've said its child friendly but obviously that depends on the child, our 18 month old had a lovely time just wandering around on the grass and there is a good mum and baby room if you need it. Thoroughly recommended.

This was our second visit to the site. Great location, good facilities - excellent shower block. The facilities were clean and staff friendly and helpful.
We live nearby but needed to work on our boat at the bottom of the hill from the campsite so this was an excellent way to start early, work late and not have to worry about missing the ferry home!
We ate at The Old Ferry Inn in Bodinnick one night which was good value pub food. We also ate at The Quay at Penmarlam, which is a good value no nonsense location for anything from breakfast, coffee (a cafetere for £1.50), lunch, afternoon tea (excellent homemade cakes) and light evening meals. They are hoping to get a licence by the end of June 2011.
I would highly recommend this site for walking, enjoying the Fowey area and generally chilling out.

Have just returned from a ten day holiday at this truly wonderful little site - a real gem.
Had read up on all the reviews prior to our visit and have to say it lived up to it's good name. The wardens Anthony and Christian couldn't have been more helpful and the site owner Marcus was on hand at all times to answer any queries.
Penmarlam is so peaceful and quiet with virtually no road noise. The top field where we enjoyed a fully serviced pitch has less shelter from any inclement weather but we were prepared to put up with that for the wonderful countryside views.
The shop is very well stocked - almost a mini supermarket in style and the sanitary facilities which are centrally located on the site were spotlessly clean at all times. The pitches are large and neatly kept but without the feeling of being overly 'manicured'.
We enjoyed the walks from the site - down the slipway to the Fowey river and also down to the ferry which takes you across the estuary to Fowey itself. The whole area is very pretty and we shall definitely be going back.

OH and I with 2 Springers have just had a wonderful 10 days at this peaceful, friendly, lovely managed site. It is easy to get to yet at the same time hidden away.
Pitches are ample sizes and clearly marked out by hedging between pitches. We think the layout of the site is spot on with the clean and pleasant facilities and the amply stocked shop, every basic item you would need (toiletries, wine, maps, etc)complete with a 'Cornish Corner' situated handily between the two fields. Would need longer cables/water/drainage for some of the serviced pitches, but plenty of space for unit, awning, car.
Lovely walks around, down to the quay with small beach (at low tide) and a slipway (if you have a boat) and small cafe, or walk into Boddinick and then across the ferry to Fowey or Polruan. No need to use the car if you wanted to chill out and escape the rat race.
This is on the romantic, rustic side of Cornwall with lots of cove, cliffs, bays and wonderful walks, many of which can be steep, but are not too difficult if you pace yourself, certainly tires the dogs out!
Had some lovely settled weather (shorts every day!) and still plenty to see and do, 10 days not enough to fit in everything/place we intended, so will have to go back next year!
Lovely site, lovely owners, lovely location. Lovely !

We visited this site last August with our new tent. (outwell bear lake 6) which is a fair size tent. The pitch we chose was in the top field and was of a good size for all of our equipment. This site does not allocate specific pitches when you book so pretty much a case of choosing whats left when you arrive.
Friendly staff at reception and the shop has a good overall selection of items you may need, otherwise its off to tesco's in St Austell.
Showers and toilets all up to a good clean standard with plenty of hot water even at the peak of the season.
One of our main reasons for choosing this site was for the yearly regatta in Fowey where the town and river have allsorts of different activities going on for a week.
Also, from the campsite you can go down to the slipway where you can hire kayaks, have a snack and drink at the friendly cafe or sit at one of the picnic tables.
Also, as mentioned in other reviews there are some great walks in this part of Cornwall.
It was a great 2 weeks holiday for us at a fantastic location and we are returning again this year.
Oh, and don't forget to have a stroll down to the Ferry Inn for a meal. It is well worth it.
