 Panmarlam camping and caravanning site

Great site, nice and quiet, not too big two fields in a figure of eight with shop and faculties in the middle. Site kept very tidy with grass cutting going on almost very day.

Toilets good, and kept clean, only had to wait once for showers (Regatta on at the time so site full)

Good location, but limited dog walking (off lead) facilities

Good walk down to the ferry and the local pub ferry inn (bit of a drag back up) but nothing too strenuous and there is a taxi if you can’t make it details in shop.

Ferry inn the food and the locals are great, didn’t go anywhere else, a real old fashion type of place, loved it!

And despite hurricane Bill doing it’s best to blow us off site; we would recommend this to all

We had an excellent week here with our 1 year old, staying with three other couples also with small ones.

The campsite is generally brilliant. Particular kudos for shower block and shop:

Toilet/shower blocks - these are immaculately clean and very new. Shower cubicles are big (hooray) with lots of hooks (hooray hooray) and free hot water (hooray hooray hooray). I never had to queue for showers in mid summer. Best campsite shower block I've been to. Excellent.

Washing up, laundry, accessible shower/loo and info room also very very good.

Shop - this is very well stocked for food, drinks (lots of local beers) and other bits and bobs. Reasonably priced too.

Site seemed very well looked after - hedges, verges etc very well cared for. Pitches are very big and well spaced too - but are all next to the velodrome (see below) - particularly bad on lower field.

Peace and quiet - this is a really quiet spot with the quiet times on site generally being stuck to and no traffic issues.

Staff/owners were very friendly and helpful before and during the trip - thankyou.

Our couple of niggles were the number of bikes using the fig 8 shaped campsite road as a velodrome for much of our stay, damaging a neighbour's car and our nerves! We had to keep our 1 year olds on far tighter leashes than we might have liked to prevent them being run over.

I don;t blame the kids riding the bikes as the nature of the site is such that there isn;t a play area or any spare grass. We had to speak (nicely) to kids on a fair few evenings to ask them not to play/cycle/shout directly outside the pods in which our toddlers were trying to sleep - would perhaps suggest that pitch 15 (which ain't great) and the one to the side may be allocated as play space to avoid this. I also wonder whether more regular patrols by site staff - particularly in the evenings - may alleviate the bike danger a bit!

Surrounding area - Old Ferry Inn is 5-10 mins down hill but takes longer back up again. Good food and drink.

Fowey is 2 mins on ferry (£1.20 per person during Regatta week - £1 otherwise, or £2.70 per car) and is really nice, shops, restaurants, pubs and a nice buzz. Little aquarium really good.

Ferries to Polruan and Mevagissey (for Heligan) if you want to be car free.

Beaches - we loved the very quiet Lansallos - worth the beautiful 20 min walk, and Lantic is spectacular if you can get there (very steep - no 1 year olds!).

A lovely peaceful campsite. We opted for a fully serviced pitch but we wouldn't need to next time as all facilities are within easy reach.

Showers/toilets were exceptionally clean at all times and I never had to queue. The shop has a good selection of bottled real ales and wine at reasonable prices. Some lovely walks from the campsite and only 15 minutes down into Bodinnick (steep hill!) We used the car ferry a few times to go across to Fowey. The Hall walk is lovely and not too long though I imagine parts would be a bit slippery in wet conditions.

Returned from this site only yesterday. It is a lovely little site and an ideal location for visiting all of Cornwall, it took us about and hour to drive to both St Ives and Bude from there, which are at opposite ends of the county. Although we like small quiet campsites, we did feel this was a little too quiet for us, as we have two teenage children and they appeared to be the only teenagers there, but it was ideal for families with young children. The shop is always well stocked and very reasonably priced, one of our airbeds burst and the campsite shop was bar far the cheapest price for a branded replacement. Plenty of showers, toilets and washing up sinks to be found and although we didn`t use it the laundry room looked ample enough too. The staff are very friendly and helpful too, nothing seemed any trouble to them at all. As previously mentioned the Ferry Inn pub serves lovely food, but be warned the portions are huge! People comment on the climb back up the hill, but it is only the first part that is steep, the rest of it is quite gentle, it took about 15 mins to walk back uo the hill. Fowey is a lovely little village with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants with something to suit all tastes. There are some lovely beaches nearby also, Readymoney being just one of them, a lovely beach with a pontoon that the children could swim out to. I would definitely recommend to this site to friends and family who are wanting a central base to tour Cornwall.

We have returned to this site year on year - the only one we do! It is simply lovely. Quiet, small, great location and really good hosts! The site can have an odd slope, but generally easy to pitch a tent etc.

Facilities are excellent - clean and water is hot and free. Guests we have met over the years vary in age, but all are looking for a good time with no hassles. We compare and judge every site we stay on to Penmarlem - no other has yet beaten in in overall marks.

The walk up from Fowey is a bit steep, but you just work off the fab meal you've eaten and it makes the glass of something deserved when you get back to your tent/caravan.

We can see ourselves returning here year after year just so long as Marcus keeps this a wonderful tranquil hideaway for good honest folk! Well done Penmarlam and we look forward to our 1st visit during Regatta week this year!

Really like this site and have been a few times.

Very easy access roads if you go the way suggested. You would ground out going via Fowey.

The pub is close by but requires one to be fairly fit and agile, not going down, but coming back up the hill. To sit outside the pub, there are some steps which some may feel rather difficult.

Get an Ordinance Survey map of the area and walk the coastal path. There is one down the hill just by the pub going Polruan way, then get the ferry over to Fowey, have some lunch and return via the vehicle ferry.

Owners are very pleasant, did not see a play park (which is excellent), toilets clean. Grass is cut and pitches are large compared to some others.

Views are of countryside.

Some pitches are exposed, but not a prob if no awning.

I don't want to go over the ground covered by previous reviews but it might be helpful to add a few points. Firstly, this site is an exposed position and although we were unlucky with the weather turning wet and windy just as we arrived I think it is likely to be windy here more often than not.

Second, to get the most from your stay here you'll need to be pretty fit and active. Any walking you do will involve steep hills. I consider myself reasonably fit though not as young as I used to be but with rather dodgy knees and an elderly dog I found myself struggling.

It's a bit optimistic to say the Ferry Inn is five minutes walk away. I don't think many people would manage it in that.

Third, I'd recommend approaching the site from the east. We came to it via the ferry from Fowey and if you are towing or have large vehicle you should be aware that the road from the west into Fowey is both narrow and (because of the ferry traffic) busy. Also, when you come off the ferry at Bodinnick there is a very sharp and steep turn.
All this isn't to say you wouldn't have a good time here - just that maybe this site wouldn't be the most suitable for everyone.

Owner's comments:

We do advise using the arrival routes on the directions page of our website (which avoids the Ferry for larger units) American RV’s of 35ft length get here easily on these routes – please do not rely on your SatNav but take our advice, we do know the roads . If you have any concerns regarding your arrival route don’t hesitate to call us and we can advise the best route(s) for your particular vehicle. You don’t need to use any narrow roads to get here !!!

I have just had 14 days at this site and found it so peaceful and relaxing. It is a beautiful site and so well kept. The staff are charming and and friendly, as is the owner, and nothing is to much trouble. The showers / toilets are fantastic.

Eating in the area means travelling to Looe, but we found a charming pub 5 miles from the site called The Punch Bowl Inn in Lanreath. There are signs on the road to the site coming from the A38. It had a limited menu but the quality was superb. Julie, the landlady, personally serves you in a olde world dining room with open log fire; if it's cold; with pleasant music in the background. A very cosy and relaxed atmosphere.

My wife suffers with arthritis and had to use the car all the time and parking in Fowey is very difficult. However, we went to Looe a lot and there was no problem parking there.

Owner's comments:

Thank you Mr Marsh for your review, I would just like to point out that the Ferry Inn in Bodinnick Village (5 – 10 mins walk) serves excellent food and does not require you to drive. Also you can then take the Ferry Shuttle over to Fowey and there are many many Pubs, Restaurants, and Hotels there with excellent food from Fish & Chips to Michelin Starred Nathan Outlaw Restaurant at the Marina Hotel and many in between – none of which require you to use a car from Penmarlam Park unless you have additional mobility requirements (in which case please call us for information). You don’t have to go to Looe, there is a huge amount within walking distance. Looe, Polperro, Lostwithiel also have many interesting foodie venues if you wish to travel further afield.

Just got back yesterday from this gem of a site. The only thing that spoiled it was the weather, blowing a gale when we tried to pitch, but that's just one of those things. It did improve though fortunately.

The site itself is very well laid out in a figure 8 with the shop, info room, toilets and washing up area in one block at the join of the two loops. The top field has the views, but is a bit more exposed, and more suited to vans if the weather gets blustery. Bottom field is well shielded by hedges and treelines, so suited us better in the tent. Picnic benches are dotted throughout the site, and low power lighting strategically placed to help navigating at night.

The shop is small, but extremely well stocked. Fresh fruit and veg, a wide range of tinned and bottled goods, beers and ciders etc, fresh meat in the fridge, and even (OH is vegetarian) a selection of Quorn products (defo a big plus). On top of that a range of equipment for that wee thing you always forget to pack.

There's wireless internet access too, but I didn't use it. It's always useful to know it's there.

The staff were brilliant, and as we approached the bank holiday weekend and the site started to fill, more were drafted in to cope with the demand.

As Marcus pointed out in a reply to previous reviewers, there are now 4 washing up sinks, and all have hot and cold water. Although the original two are under a lean-too cover, and the new ones exposed, it's not a major issue.

The toilet facilities were spotless, and considering the amount of rain we had, it's a miracle. Hot water is free and plentiful, the showers good, albeit with those 20 second push button things, and with automatic hand and hair dryers to round it off.

The site has an access road to its slip and storage area on one side, which did create traffic noise, but that was only during the day and not obtrusive. The road down to Bodinick ferry on the other, and that was the same. After the ferry stops running in the evening, the traffic stops too.

The Old Ferry Inn is 10mins walk down the hill, but it's quite steep on the way back after food and drinks. Food there is very good and reasonably priced too.

Much to see and do in the area too. Fowey itself, Polruan across the river (2 ferries to get there if you don't drive round). The Eden Project at Blazey is only 7 or 8 miles away from Fowey. Looe, Polperro, Liskeard and St Austell short drives away. The national Seal Sanctuary at Gweek, near Helston is a bit further afield, but well worth a visit.

All in all a fantastic little site, in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of everything.

Definitely worth recommending, and definitely worth revisiting.

Owner's comments:

At the time Sharky92 visited the additional sinks had not yet been covered over, but this has now been done – so if it does rain you will be under cover at all our washing up sinks.

Stayed at this site whilst on a walking holiday in Cornwall on the strength of readers reviews. I had an enjoyable stay which was helped by the pleasant and polite staff. The toilet and shower block was clean and tidy (and warm), the shop was stocked with all essentials and was open for a significant amount of time each day (even though the site was almost empty) and the site is located in a beautiful part of Cornwall.

This is a quiet site with well laid out and large pitches. Just one word of caution. I found that once I had reached the site and wanted to travel off to different destinations, my sat nav always tried to send me down the numerous country lanes that criss cross the area. But once you get your bearings, you get wise to the main roads which I found easier to travel on. If travelling South use the car ferry to Fowey. As it saves loads of time for a small fee.

I Would recommend this site, and will visit the site again soon.
