Word on the site was that over £2.0m was going to be spent on it over the winter I do hope the 'enhancements' don't mean the character of the site is lost, we loved it there. The pitches were large enough not to be looking straight in the next door's car or caravan, easily enough room for a bbq and relax.

We found the site to be child friendly especially as it was at the beginning of the summer holidays. Come dusk the noise ceased and tranquillity rained supreme. Plenty of room for our 5 year old to ride his bike around the site and kick a ball in the play area. If this area is not big enough, over the back of the site is a huge area where the kids could kick a ball, play hide and seek or spot insects. Our 5 year old and 2 1/2 year old loved it down there. As its fenced off there's no danger of them escaping so we could sit on a bench and watch the world go by while they played to their hearts content.

Laundry - usual £3 for a wash didn't use the dryer. Wind took care of that. Washing up area easily big enough to cope with a site full over the summer. Info room very good with daily updated weather forecasts. Toilet block and showers satisfied the needs without any discomfort. We got a key for a room that was decked out in Dora stickers with a belfast sink in it, nice and warm and we managed in here quite easily.

The site is 35 minutes from Yarmouth and about 20 minutes from Fishbourne and East Cowes. Personally I preferred the Lymington crossing as the scenery is nice and pleasant and you don't have the hassle of driving into a city centre. We went from Portsmouth but back to Lymington as we continued to Cornwall.

Some good local pubs, the fighting cocks on the main road about 3 mins from the site is good. As said before the island is a little more expensive than the mainland but where we ate out they all seemed to be booked up which must say something.

Go to Ryde by train from Lake. £3 return for each adult kids loved it and it saved a load on petrol and parking. Sandown beach is lovely, parking's a little problematic but not bad enough to keep you away. Wouldn't go to the needles again, a complete rip off. Cowes is lovely, park at East Cowes which has loads of free parking in the road and use the chain ferry which is also free to foot passengers. Blackgang Chine sorted a cloudy day. We all loved it. Never got to Robin Hill but I loved it there 20 years ago. Cycle path on an old railway line about half mile from site that goes into Newport (6 miles) and Sandown (2 miles). Didn't use it this time.

Word to the wise. We booked the ferry crossing in March cost just over £100 with the CC. However the CC never informed me that the timetables changed for the summer in mid July and the return crossing back to Lymington had moved forward by 25 minutes. Good job I'm sad enough to check the timetables!

As I've said before, we loved the site and will definitely return in the future, as CC sites go this was up there with the best. We met lovely people and had a super time!

Typical Caravan Club efficiency, well kept and well managed. The dog walk is a long corridor between fences, boring really and no chance of walking them out of the site because there is no pavement. The young 'locals' think the road is a practice track for Le Mons. That's sad because there is a huge field owned by the CC next to the dog walk and the notice said Reserved For Children or something like that. I have to say that it was totally unused and should be opened up for our canine friends.

There is a Fish & Chip van which turns up on certain evenings! They can't be bothered to prepare their own chips, just cheap frozen fries and I won't even mention the square block of Cod? (captive audience and a licence to print money?)

Don't let me put you off this site It's great especially as the Garlic shop is just up the road.

We have posted a review as this site has changed hands over the 2008/9 winter and would like to point out a few changes which have happened which you may like to bear in mind before returning. The site is now owned by the Caravan Club. We have a trailer tent but the Caravan club allowed us to keep the booking. I have to point out that we have 3 girls under 5 so the main criterion for us choosing this site was the availability of a family bathroom.

Most of the plus points mentioned in the 2008 reviews still apply the site is very well landscaped etc but the management has changed for the worse. They have removed the family bathroom and the family shower room from use. When we complained that we had made the booking mainly for the family bathroom, they said that it had never existed and was never mentioned on the web site. We confirmed with other people who had been to the site previous years that a bathroom and shower room did exist and we could see it though the windows.

Basically I would not expect the same service implied by previous reviews although the physical facilities of the site mostly remain, making it a good site with a nice play area, badly run and not so child friendly any longer. We did get away with using the baby change area as a family wash area which saved the day. Shame as the holiday was excellent in every other way. The child attractions are great, Blackgang, Robbin Hill and Model Village being notable favourites. Personally I loved rock pooling on Bembridge beach with the kids at low tide priceless fun literally!

I can't really add much more to what others have said before me, the site was kept very tidy and toilets / showers were clean nearly all the time. Showers could do with a little updating as they were a little small with practically nowhere to put your dry clothes.

Wardens were very accommodating and helpful, as CC had made a bit of a hash of my ferry booking, meaning our ferry was 15.30 instead of 12.30, the wardens allowed us to stay on site until we needed too.

Plenty to do on the island (too much to list) but what I would say is avoid the needles park unless you enjoy being ripped off for a sub standard attraction.

We found prices on the island a bit more pricey than on the mainland, eating out is not cheap so invest in a Cadac and cook on site.

Can add nothing that others haven't already said. In our relatively short camping experience this is the best site we have used, and very economic as we booked through Red Funnel and got a really good deal.

It has been a few years since we visited the Island and found that it seems to have become very run down, especially Sandown and very expensive to eat out at reasonable quality restaurants. Also found the roads in very poor repair all over the Island (worse than parts of Surrey that we visit and count as the worst roads in the country!) .Best off site amenity. Car Parking season tickets, we paid £20 for 4days which allowed us to use any council car park, without restriction any where on the Island. Cornwall take note!

Weather was dreadful all week torrential rain but site held up very well quickly drained between storms. Quiet, nicely laid out, good size pitches, facilities could not be faulted for cleanliness. Showers in the men's small and a little dated. Never saw the ladies but wife says they are first class. Nothing much locally so a car is essential. Would we visit again yes. Is it worth its rating -- yes.

Initially wanted to use the site which is allied to the caravan club until I learned that they would charge me £2.50 per night per dog, this is a disgrace. So we arrived here and am I glad we did, nothing to add to what has already been said because it is all correct. The site also benefits from wireless free internet access which was useful to me. There are many eating pubs locally, although not walking distance. If you can drive then try the Crab and Lobster Inn at Bembridge. All in all we enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to return.

Difficult to add anything more to the complimentary things said by the previous reviewers. We also found Southlands to be an extremely well run, high quality, family oriented site which deserves their numerous awards. I guess that consistency is the clever bit.

Southlands is quite a large, conveniently situated, level, attractively landscaped site divided into different areas with lalandi hedging. The main track ways are graveled, and the ground well drained. So, it is ideal for people in tents and keeps mud to a minimum.

We stayed over the Bank Holiday weekend when the site was full and the single large modern toilet block (complete with family room; disabled facility; bath (£1); privacy cubicles; baby bathing facility) was extremely well maintained and coped perfectly with the number of people. Opposite the toilet block is a similarly well equipped washing up and laundry facility.

The Isle of Wight is a very nice place to visit with vast amounts of things to see and do. We were there during the annual Steam Rally and the annual Scooter Rally. The steam rally was one of the best I’ve seen. Then, it was like the clock had been put back to 1968 on Sunday night in Ryde with 100’s of vintage Vespas and Lambrettas and a (free) Small Faces tribute band on the seafront. All good natured, perhaps because most of the Mods now have bus passes! (Like me!)

Just pick up a (free) copy of “Wight Life”; “I.O.W Pocket Guide”; “Pub Walks Pocket Guide”, and “Holiday Guide” and you will have absolutely everything listed and described.

A note on the ferries. Don’t worry if you are a little early or late for your booked crossing. The service runs every half hour, as long as you have got a ticket, they will put you on the next available crossing.

A few personal recommendations:

Warren Farm, Alum Bay (One of the best farmhouse cream teas): Marharajah, High Street Shanklin (Good, reasonably priced Indian restaurant.): Pearly Boise, High Street, Shanklin: (Ice Cream Parlour with all home made ice creams): Winter Gardens, Ventnor (Views, performances, and good value restaurant); Buddle Inn, Niton Undercliff (Food, real ale, music in ‘Smugglers Barn’): Bonchurch Inn, Bonchurch (Superb, medium priced Italian restaurant.)

Things I think you will like about the I.O.W:

Low levels of traffic. (Congestion free, except Newport at 5 0’clock!): Numerous significant festivals/rallies all year round: Numerous of visitor attractions: Numerous beaches and un-spoilt bays: Vast network of well signposted footpaths/bridlepaths/byways/cycleways: Good value family oriented eats & drinks places everywhere.

Things I think you will not like about the I.O.W:

Peak season ferry fares. (But check if the campsite can offer you an “inclusive fare”): Anywhere with a coach park. (e.G.,& with apologies to, Smithy’s Forge & Needles Park.)

We will go back.

 Wow .

We have stayed in a number of camp sites and this is by far the best! It has a ETB 5 Star rating and they earned every one of them!

I agree with other reviewer's comments about Washrooms, Spotless including the Gents! but Gents showers are a bit small but we guys make do, and the ladies, I am told are quite different and have larger showers as well, there are also family washrooms too.

Owners are very plesent and helpful, and no sooner has someone left there pitch its had a once over with the lawn mower ready for the next punter.

Lastly. Its got wireless Internet. In a campsite?, and its FREE, (donations to charity welcome) now thats something else!, not the fastest in the world but for planning your days out its fine. And for leaving a review or two :D

Brilliant, well maintained, spotlessly clean campsite. The toilets & showers were always clean. The site is nice and flat and level with neat conifer hedges around pitches, giving a nice level of privacy and shelter. There is a small shop which supplies the basics. Theres plenty of nice pubs with good food in the area (we tried most of em). The site has very friendly staff and owners. Kids assure me that the play area was good too. Plenty to do in the area, blackgang chine and robin hill country park were big winners with the children. Electric hookup was handy as weve never bothered with one before, (being hardcore campers). There is a tap and hookup on every pitch. If returning to the isle of wight, we wouldn't consider staying anywhere else.
