First time camping on the Isle of Wight and Southlands was a fantastic site, very clean in all respects. Very close to local amenities and an excellent base to explore the island. Southlands definitely deserves it David Bellamy awards. Only comments I would make is that lights in toilet/shower block were on a timer and therefore you could go at certain times and find the toilet / shower block a little dark. Also shop could be better stocked and sell papers.

It pains me to do this as it means lots of people will visit but it deserves the praise. Friendly people super clean facilities no rowdy people. The three of us have just returned and loved it so much we are going back next year. If you want a family friendly site without all the late night stuff. Where your pitch is spacious and you can have a shower in warm water in spotless conditions. Where if you have a question someone can help you out if your children don't need fancy amusements but need space to play ball or ride a bike. If you need ice packs for your picnic and if your to tired out from the hectic pace of life this is the place to go. Lots to do in fact a week is not long enough. We cannot find anything negative to say

Just returned from south lands what can I say this site is fab in every way. Toilets, showers, wash rooms spotless, good size pitches very well laid out. We will be returning again and again I'm sure as this is one of the best sites we have ever been on

This is my second stay at Southland campsite and have to say this site is faultless! Facilities clean and considering it was bank holiday weekend there was always plenty available to use. Shower blocks are divided into men's and women's which have showers (with lots of hot water), toilets and sinks. There are disabled facilities which has a toilet, shower and sink. Also large family shower rooms are available. There is a laundry room and an enclosed washing up area with plenty of sinks and draining boards. Recycling facilities (look out for the love bug).
The site has won many awards for conservation and this is evident on site, with pitches divided by hedges, plenty of trees and shrubs around the site creating a green oasis (compared to other sites I have been to). At the bottom of the site is a meadow and dog walking area with views over the valley - this area is full of wildlife and a joy to watch (you can picnic in this area).
The site has a small shop which has good opening hours with a good and cheap ice pack system. There is a play area (I don't have kids but when I went past the kids looked like they were having a great time). The site is very quiet with an 11pm quiet time rule, you must leave your car at the entrance of the site if you come back late at night. Great location not far from Newport and Sandown, Morrison's is the local supermarket. So many attractions near by!
There is "wireless hot spot" which is free to use so you can surf the net or email if you take your laptop. Electric hook up on all pitches and fresh water taps on some of the pitches, I would describe the pitches as quite large. The whole site is flat (excluding the meadow) mainly laid as grass with the roads and paths gravel. I could go on and on (which I'm sure I have done) - check out their great website which includes loads of pictures, a video, map of the island (including walks and attractions), you can book on-line and has a ferry package too. A massive thumbs up from me!

A fantastically well maintained site - spotless toilets etc. The layout and shrub planting round the site is lovely too, and the pitch condition was excellent. Very little road noise, and lots of birds. Altogether a very peaceful site. My only complaint is some lack of tolerance - my son had his bike confiscated for a night for riding too fast, with no warning and despite being not the only one to do it. So it may not be an ideal site for some teenagers but overall we liked the site very much and I'm sure we'll go back. The sort of site that will appeal to "real" campers!

What a fabulous site! Beautifully laid out with many spectacular trees and bushes, all very well maintained. Pitches are on grass, but with a gravel soil there's little chance of getting stuck even with a hefty motorhome. Stayed there for three nights over Easter, and there was plenty of space all round (in sharp contrast to previous two nights at The Orchards on the other side of the island). Little wonder Southlands was voted the UK's best site for motorhomes. Will definitely return.

August 2005 The site was very clean & well laid-out. It was very frustrating trying to use the family / handicapped shower & wash dishes as the lights were never on! We were told they were "on a timer" that came on around 9pm until 10am, but even attempts to bathe with our children @ 8am were done so in the dark! Also hard to wash dishes when you shadow-over the small sink in the dark! For such a nice place, we just found it odd/frustrating that we were "rationed" lighting!
Nice play area for the kids, but not really kid-friendly! 6 of the 8 families in our row had children kicking a football around & they were told to go to the park-fine. Went to the park & they were made to leave before dusk with no "closing time" posted on the park entrance!
Other than showering/washing dishes in the dark & the lack of patience with children of different families from all over the world trying to make friendships, the site was lovely. Great views of the sunrise/sunset & close to town.

July 2005 As first time campers this site was fantastic. Toilet and shower facilities were absolutely spotless, constantly cleaned. Our pitch was large althoughh friends also staying were on a much smaller one. Would definitely go again. The Blacksmiths arms north of carisbrooke castle does fab sunday lunches... book ahead.

August 2005 We have just spent a week at this campsite and had a lovely time. The site is beautifully maintained with neatly clipped hedges and immaculate toilet block. Unfortunately it was not an ideal choice for us as we have a 4 year old and as the pitches are in small 'bays' of about 8 units and there were no other children for him to play with in our bay. However if you want a quiet, large, allocated pitch this is ideal.
I only have 3 critisisms:
1) the water in the washing up room was not very hot and was on push button taps with very poor water pressure. Also the showers in the ladies were also unadjustable push button ones which on some showers only lasted a few seconds (which made me feel like I was in a swimming baths). Even more annoyingly this was not the case in the mens toilets which were adjustable.
2) The shop was very poorly stocked and only open between 9am and 4pm and even then not always open. It would have done more business if they had been open earlier and stocked papers.
3) The staff were not particularly friendly or welcoming and we were unceremoniously moved on from the completely empty carpark when we arrived as it was 'too busy' for us to wait there for my parents to arrive with their caravan.
All in all though it is a lovely site and fairly quiet at night too. I don't think we will return there though as I prefer an open field type site where the children can mingle easier.

July 2005 Just returned from a week at Southland and the site is excellent. Pitches are level, generous in size and all have electric and drainage on the site is very good (we had a few nights of torrential rain but no problems). The showers, toilets, dish-wash rooms were all very clean. The family rooms are a great idea. The staff are friendly and extremely helpful. The site is very well laid out and the kids enjoyed the play area and the meadow. Just sorting out the dates before we book again for next year.
