Just arrived home from 10 days at Southland. In 30 years of carvannning and camping this rates as one to the best we've been on, and that includes Caravan Club members only sites. We agree with other positive comments on this website - everywhere was always spotlessly clean and tidy. There were 4 units in our party and were were all sited conveniently together. The site sent went beautifully quiet at bedtime. The small hedged off areas definitely encourage peace and quiet. We felt very relaxed here.
Our only reservation was on safety grounds. There is a site rule that bikes should only be ridden on the made up roads and not through the grassed pitching areas. This rule did not seem to be enforced as children frequently cycled through at high speed, especially at barbecue time. To a degree this is understandable, kids being kids (we were young once), but we witnessed several adults doing it as well.
That minor moan aside, we can't wait to get back.
We don't need to extol the virtues of the Isle of Wight - it's lovely and long may it remain so.

We rang up last minute as were at Grange Farm at Brightstone for two nights but got so weather beaten with the pitch facing Atlantic that we rang up Southland-they just got a cancellation so had room for us.Wow-brilliant place. So clean and well laid out.The staff did everything they could to please and nothing was too much. The Wardens were friendly and helped us out of hours when our son caught a seabass and we needed to chill it for 24hours to eat the next day and they kept it in their caravan and helped fix our mobile. The pitches were well spaced out.The shower blocks were best I have ever seen-loads of hot water-peak August and always a shower free at 7-8am. The playground was good although not the best I have seen but the site felt safe. It was very quiet at night.Brilliant sinks and washing machines and tumble dryers all in clean wooden cabins.Site has amazing feel and everyone seems to be regulars coming back every year some being visting annually for 7 years! Just brilliant-would highly recommend. Near a campshop and Morrisons (5 MINUTES AWAY) and great pubs like the one next to the Arreton Craft barns. Vetnor worth a visit as great paddling pool/beach and crabbing fishing site and loads of cafes nearby. Bembridge is awsome and find the millpath as got 3 bridges and amzing crabbing and fishing. The baywatch cafe at Bembridge fantastic and right on the beach-great food-quite london feel. The beaches great here and fantastic for rockpooling/crabbing and shell collecting.

Spent a lovely 2 weeks here.
Site was quiet, clean and well laid out.
Tent pitches were level and large, electric hookup and most pitches seperated by hedges, so you didn't feel exposed.
The toilet and shower block were spotless as well, plenty of hot water and never a long wait for a shower even when the site was full and busy.
Small shop on site for the essentials, but everything is so close that stocking up wasn't a problem.
Kids wandered around to there hearts content and enjoyed the freedom and security.
Will be going back!

Came back yesterday (27 July 08) from 4 days away at Southland (me and OH went for our 25th wedding anniversary) and I have to say what a wonderful campsite this is, the place is immaculate and a credit to the owners! Toilet/shower blocks always spotless, grass is mown and everywhere is pristine. Southland is in a briliant location, close to all touristy places and only a short drive to Sandown and shanklin beaches. We only found this place after reading reviews on here and we will definitely be returning very soon.

The best site we have ever stayed on. Spotlessly clean site and facilities. Large level pitches, perfectly manicured hedges and lawns. A joy just to stroll around on a nice evening, peaceful and well managed.
Shower cubicles in gents could be a little larger but that is minor.
Well drained so not even a problem when the rain refuses to stop (as it did during one of our stays.
We normally return every year but looked for a change this year and regretted it.
IOW is a lovely place and this site is ideally situated to explore its many splendours.

Well I must say me and the wife felt spoiled!
WHAT a great campsite. We found the owners viv and vanessa very welcoming and pleasant.
The campsite itself is very well set out and we got a big pitch. 26ft van with full awning and still had enough room for car to park next to it.
The park is set out in bays surrounded by hedges and though you had your own privacy, the other people around you were talkative and friendly.
Male toilets were always clean, could do with modernising but not a disgrace. Shop sold the assentals milk, bread and sweets and lollies for the kids.
Only a few miles to nearest supermarket and sandown/shanklin beach only 10mins drive away.
Play area ok for kids aged between 2/10 but for not older. Only stayed for 1 week but wished we stayed for 2. Booked ferry crossing through campsite, which took hassel out of organising everything. Late night arrivals area as well as we arrived at 3am after traveling from hull.
Going to book for next year. As loved it so much.

Stayed here for a very wet last week in may. Immaculate would be the best way to describe this site & the attention to detail is amazing with campsite staff continually tidying trimming or cleaning around the site. All the facilities were top notch except the showers werent always as hot as they could be but everything was always very clean. The staff were friendly and helpful and always. Willing to give advice and information. Pitches were a good size but some were tucked away down hedge lined alleys which I found to be not as sociable as I like my camping to be. There are larger more open areas but you are shown to your allocated pitch with no options given. So if you're looking to stay somewhere quiet and peaceful in beautiful surroundings then this site is for you

Have visited this caravan site twice now and have already booked for 2008. All in all a lovely park with excellent friendly staff and clean plentiful facilities. In addition a good central location from which to explore the island. Would recommend Culver Down for those wishing a nice walk. This is a very well managed site. We have children who like to play but they are aware to respect all holidaymakers and are always supervised! The owners are very good at ensuring all holidaymakers have a great time. A site for those wishing a peaceful getaway.

We have just returned from a week at Southland and this was definitely the best site we have ever stayed at. The wardens were friendly and helpful but not round every five minutes telling you what to do/not to do like some sites. The lovely grounds were immaculate. We had a large pitch, with a water tap, and the site is arranged in small bays surrounded by hedging which gives a nice, private feel.
The washrooms were plentiful and absolutely spotless and there are washing machines/dryers/iron all on site if required. The site was very quiet with no noise at night when we were there. There was a children's playground in the corner of the site. Which looked very nice to me although I am no expert.
There is a bus stop outside the site although it didn't run that often. However about 10 minutes walk away was a regular service to Newport/Sandown which ran every half hour until quite late at night. We bought a Rovercard for £20 each and only used the van once during the week. The Island is very well served by buses and you can get virtually everywhere as long as you plan your journeys with the aid of a timetable.
We didn't walk to Newchurch itself although others campers praised the food at the Pointer Inn. You do need to book though.
Osborne House, Carisbrooke Castle, the Needles and Arreton Barns Craft Village are all well worth a visit.
To be honest, I can't think of anything we didn't like! We will definitely be back.

1st review of this year for Southlands. Visited Mid-April with the weekends being wet and the week clear and cold, especially in the tent. This site is spotless with the Wardens constantly mowing the lawns and making sure the campers are happy. We had an excellent pitch near the park area, this was appreciated by the kids and meant we could keep an eye (or ear!) on them. The electric point next to the tent was not working (rcd tripped) and as the electrian was not on duty on the Saturday, the Warden leant us one of his extension cables. This point was quickly fixed on the Monday morning as promised. The toilet block was also spotless, however, the lights appeared to be on a timer and the blocks were dark during the day.
This site is ideally located on the island if you have a car as it is situated in the middle of the East of the island where most attractions are. Note that the nearest pub is not 5 minutes walk away, more like 20 minutes on roads without pavements.
When we go back to the Island in about two years, we will definitely go back to Southlands.
