Very impressed on arrival, friendly staff. We were shown to our pitch which was a good size. We have a large tent and gazebo. Site well laid out and kept very tidy.
Our children enjoyed the play area and were soon playing football(in marked area)and making friends.
The washrooms were big and light, always clean, warm with plenty of toilets, showers and enclosed /individual washbasins. Seperate family bathroom available but didn't use this. Washing up areas good always clean with good supply of hot water.
Nature area lovely and peaceful the children enjoyed rabbit spotting.
We had horrible weather for first couple of days wet and VERY windy, my husband had to repeg our tent several times in the night! The staff were quick to cone off boggy areas and put down straw. Some people left because of the weather but we stayed and luckily it improved.
Very central for visiting many attractions, don't forget to send off your tesco vouchers for e.G Amazon Zoo, The Needles Park to name a couple.
The on site shop could stock more but Morrisons very close by car and has a cafe there.
Overall a lovely site, child friendly and we would come again.

Excellent site with good, well-maintained facilities (really clean with bags of hot water). Very ordered site and helpful, friendly staff. Just turned up without booking (thanks to reviews on this site) and were shown to a pitch with a cheery 'we'll sort the paperwork and money out in the morning'. Nice quiet spot, very handy for bikes routes and a bus-ride to the beach.
We were there right at the end of the season (advised they are closed October-March) so understandably pitches were well-worn.
Could anything be better? The 'wish-list' would be reducing the height of the perimeter hedges so you get a view, and the nearest pub (Pointer Inn) serving some local beer rather than London Pride! It's now on our list of sites we're happy use when on the IOW

Visited Southland for 16 days. Generally very pleased with the site. Disabled toilet facility very frequently abused. Radar key system would improve greatly, had to queue in main toilet shower block on several mornings and site was by no means full, could be a problem in high season toilets were spotless. Pitches were well worn, we had no rain at all weather brilliant, had it rained it could have been a mud bath outside our pitch. The location of our pitch was perfect. Some other pitches had very little sun, a few arrivals asked to be moved, as the site was quite quiet this was done without any problem. A more modern approach to the site booking system would help alleviate this, it would also allow site pitches to be rested were ever possible. All staff were very helpful, this is still the best site on the Isle of Wight without question, I offer my comments as constructive criticism, and by no way of that of a complaint. We will most certainly return we have already recommended the site to quit of few of our fellow caravaners. We would like to thank all of the staff at Southlands for making our Holiday a very memorable one.

We stayed here based on the reviews and the professional looking website that the site has. I agree that the site is nicely landscaped - lots of mature shrubs to segregate areas, however, the pitches are very closely spaced and if you are unlucky enough to be on the main route through the site there is not much privacy. My children (3 under 8s) were not very impressed with the playarea, 3 swings and a climbing frame is very little compared with other sites we have stayed at of a similar style/size. The showers & toilets were adequate, although there is only one block for the whole site. My two gripes about the washing facilities are that the basins are so high that the children couldn't reach to brush their teeth - normally there are stools or steps at the other sites I've been to and they couldn't use the taps as they are the push down type. The site is well situated for accessing the east coast of the island but there didn't seem to be anything we could get to without using the car - although there appears to be a good public bus network with a stop by the site entrance. The supermarket is about a 5 minutes drive away which is useful as the shop is very sparsely stocked (not even tomato sauce!) and runs out of milk & bread very quickly.

This is without a doubt the best site we have stayed on and we have been camping for many years. As previously stated the facilities are spotless, the whole campsite is extremely well maintained. The owner is friendly and always on hand to help. There are two family shower rooms, with a toilet in each, which I found very useful with two young girls. Along with this there is a room with all you need to bath a baby and disabled facilities. In the main ladies block there is three large showers and three single showers and individual wash rooms. The ground is level and hedges section off areas. Our children made friends and played in the park until it closed at nine o clock. This is not a site to visit if you like clubs and evening entertainment, but if it's peace and relaxation you are after, you can't go far wrong visiting here. If you want to eat out you should try the isle of wight airport a couple of miles away towards Sandown. The food is great and it is lovely watching the light aircraft taking off whilst having a drink. We will definitely be visiting again.

Booked 8 nights here mainly on the reviews listed here and we weren't disappointed! The site is landscaped with hedges, bushes and plants. There is a spot close to reception that I believe is the wifi hot-spot, that has a couple of picnic benches to sit at. While you sit here you could be mistaken for sitting in the grounds of some great country house.it really is that nice. Another excellent bit of planning by the owners is the meadow. This is past the dog walk, (lovely in itself!) and has the grass cut so individual areas are private for having a picnic or just chilling. Fantastic! The facilities on site are very good. 2 washing machines, (£2), 2 dryers, (50p for 20 Min's) and the toilets are kept clean and welcoming. Sometimes the showers weren't as clean as I'd like but this was down to people using them and not to a lack of effort from the staff. A stout walk / short bike ride / shorter drive is the Pointers Inn. We didn't have chance to eat here, (booking is required,) but the meals looked lovely so if you get a chance get in there. The IOW has so many things to see and do it would be foolish to try and name them all but a few we went to are Osbourne House. An excellent day out and fascinating! I had to drag the family to see the Needles and they are still thanking me for taking them! We all had a great time there. A excellent little place to visit is Arreton Barns craft village. You will find loads of little gifts to take home for your family and yourself, and it has a great pub that serves lovely food. We booked the site with the ferry crossing included and had a great holiday, one of the best. Only down side is we needed 2 weeks extra.oh well.there's always next year.

We spent a wonderful week here in July 2007. The weather was kind to us, but the site did not seem to have been affected at all by the rain of previous weeks. The staff were helpful, especially on arrival. They even were able to mend a new electric cable which mysteriously did not work for which we are very grateful. Our 2 children aged 5 and 3 enjoyed themselves thoroughly and appreciated the playground area which they played on til sundown. The toilet and shower facilities were excellent - very clean and lots of hot water and were cleaned and maintained thoroughly. The dishwashing area and laundry area were well organised and there was always plenty of space for all. We enjoyed a wonderful week at Southlands and will definitely return in the future.

Just returned from this site. The site was very well kept and the staff have everything well organised. We were met when we arrived and taken to our pitch which was very sufficient for our needs. The toilet blocks were very clean and there was more than enough showers, wash basins, toilets and family cubicles. The shop on the site was open from 9-12 each morning and stocked basic essentials. We wanted some advice on family eating places around the island and we were given lots of help and advice and even given a booklet with ratings for local restaurants, very helpful ! Plenty of staff too, you could always find someone around to help you. Only moan would be that a a family close by were very noisy and had dogs that constantly barked, day and night, and although lots of people complained, they were allowed to stay! otherwise, great site, would recommend it for an ideal base to explore the island. Pleased with facilities and service.

We visited this site in July 2007 and found the site to be very pretty and well looked after and in quite a good position. The toilet and shower blocks were excellent, as were the washing up bases, probably the best we have visited.
There was a play area for the children in the bottom corner of the site but not big enough to play football in or anything like that, it was fine for really young children under 7 but not really for chilren older, in the do's and dont's when you arrive it is made quite clear no ball games outside the play area.
We found the pitch quite small and the pitches opposite quite close, this meant we had to reverse our car 2 times to get in along side the tent, it would not have been so bad, if they had not insisted cars being parked to the left of each unit?
As I said at the start of this review the site is very nice but we would not return as there were to many rules (I work hard all year and just want to chill out) and nowhere for my children to play properly, as for the piches, talking to people that were regulars to the site (mostly caravan owners)thay requested particular pitches on booking which is a great advantage.

WOW,,, We where not disapointed with this site, it was clean, very friendly staff, well spaced out and in a beautiful part of the island. There is no Pool or Pub but that just makes it the best site, no rowdiness, everybody is there to see the island, visit the lovely towns and villages, get back to the site, have a couple of beers and sleep - ready to explore again. Our daughter was able to get wire less internet connection to the laptop (invaluable for the evenings). Thank you Southlands for your help. I was disapointed that there was no shop in Newchurch nearly a mile away - but we managed. There was a pub, but personnally we thought it was a little expensive for an evening meal, each to there own. Well worth a visit
