Having read some of the the reviews and considering visiting I contacted the park and asked about the works that are being carried out, I was advised that there were refurbishments being undertaken that the park is open all year so could not be carried out when they are closed but that no works are carried out during school holidays or at weekends. We stayed over the Easter period and found the above to be true.
We had an enjoyable holiday and the entertainment was excellent.

We Enjoyed our stay at Cawood, but at the moment it looks like a building site, they have removed some of the touring pitches replacing them with static ones.
There is only one toilet block. Who ever designed the showers must not go caravanning. The Shower tray is too high and much too long, you have to stand on the shower tray so you can close the door. If you hang your clothes on the back of the door they get wet whilst you are showering, the small area gets wet so you have no area at all to get dried and dressed.
The toilets are good but the small sink is no good at all this needs taking out, taps to close and you cannot get your hands under them without getting wet though.
The shower block needs heating I found it cold at the evening time.
The club is very good, entertainment very good beer prices fair.

Management response: We are legally required to have 1 shower per sex per 30 pitches, we operate 40 touring pitches at present, we have 3 showers per sex (6 in total ) + 2 private bathrooms + 1 disabled wet room, I doubt there are many parks in the country that have a similar facility to pitch ratio. |

I had read the previous reviews after booking to try out our new van and was worried we had made a mistake. We arrived separately (Second car parked at reception) after collecting our 2 kids and the park appeared busy with vans but pretty quiet with people.
I had booked the pool when I arrived which was easy and free!
We visited the club house at 8pm and watched the singer which was nice for the kids but they soon slipped off into the conservatory to play with the Wii (£5 deposit required)
The drinks were reasonably priced and the staff appeared welcoming.
In the morning a severe frost had frozen all the on site water taps and campers had to fill their kettles in the bathroom but seemed to create conversation between fellow campers and certainly didn't spoil our stay.
In response to the reviews about the new toilets the choice of flooring doesn't help especially with the high pressure water taps. Also the floor appears to very level which encouraged water to stand rather than running away. One problem was no soap dispenser at sinks only in individual toilet cubicles large taps were that close together you cannot get both hands under them in the tiny sink.
The pool was clean and well kept which for us was a real change as we re used to just having a nearby pub.
Good quality family time and we didn't feel the site lacked facilities for the kids.

Just spent a weekend at Cawood and found it to be a nice pleasant site.
We paid £22 per night for an electric grass pitch.
Was ok, quite uneven and muddy but managed ok.
No children's playarea, which we was aware of, and to be honest they had just as much fun riding their bikes around the site and a large field to run around on.
The swimming pool look fine, booked in 1 hour slots but was made aware that is is 4ft deep with no shallow end - but did not get the chance to use the pool.
Shop was great, lovely giant cookies on sale! along with newspapers, mags, sweets, essentials etc
Fishing was included so that was a bonus
The toilet block looks new and was lovely and clean (as they all should be) my only bug bear was the shower sprayed all around you rather than on you so it took a while to wash the hair.
The club house was good, kids were entertained in conservatory
I would visit again and would recommend

Just returned from a weekend at Cawood, we have been many times before and never thought I would change my mind about this site. We have visited it many times over the last 20 years and seen many changes mostly for the better, that is until now.
Firstly, pitches at the moment are extremely crowded and very uneven, we were on a pitch which was obviously an old static caravan pitch very bumpy and hard to get onto, due to ridges and old paving. When we came to leaving it was very difficult to get off pitch as the caravans around were very close and we could not get the swing round to leave pitch without reversing many times.
What was once a beautiful touring caravan site is now sadly been overtaken by Static caravans available only to buy. We have also been informed that some more of the touring pitches in front of the lake is also to be taken over by Statics.
There is now hardly any pegs to fish now and once the new statics are in place around the lake there will be even less.
The new toilet block is nice as expected but far to small for the amount of pitches and we had to wait quite sometime for a shower in the morning, water was not that hot either. You can hire a private bathroom but there are only 2 for the whole site, would have been better if that space was just used for extra toilets and showers.
As usual swimming pool and bar were great and it really breaks my heart to say we will not be returning . Having said all this the static areas are beautiful and a credit to the owners but unfortunately at the detriment of the tourers.

I have a young family with two boys aged 5 and 3. We stayed on one of the superpitches and were really impressed. We found the toilet and shower block nearby very clean and were always quiet. I didn't actually use the showers as we used the caravan shower so cannot comment on pressure of water etc. There are apparently two private hire bathrooms which were booked up when we stayed but sound great. They have a half bath, shower, toilet and sinks and are heated. They only cost £5 per night to hire if available.
I did think the superpitches were very spaced out compared to the main touring pitches. Walking around we thought the normal pitches were very squashed in, I would definitely upgrade to a superpitch.
We didn't use the club house but it looked lovely, all new furniture and a lovely beer garden too. The only thing from a family point of view letting it down was a lack of children's play equipment. However, there was a very good sized playing field opposite the superpitches and my kids had a lovely time chasing eachother or playing football.
There is a small pool on site which you need to pre book. There is no extra charge for it. They book up to 8 people in at a time. We booked it for 10am saturday morning and had the place to ourselves for an hour. It was great. Big enough to have a swim in and the kids had fun jumping in etc. There was a seating area with tables and chairs for those not wanting to swim too just around the edge of the pool.
The shop was well stocked with everything you could need. I found it very hard to resist the cakes and cookies they sold freshly made!
It took us about 10 minutes via a scenic drive into York itself. The nearby villages are very pretty. We used Selby Sainsburys to stock up and did notice a large public swimming baths there too. It was only a couple of miles away.
We will definitely be returning to this site, for the cleanliness and facilities it offers as well as its location to other tourist places such as York.
I would really recommend it to others but to book a superpitch!

We booked a super pitch, it had rubble, quite large stones, weeds all over the grassed area, not what we would call a super pitch at all.
Being disabled, the facilities were very important, having paid £20 for onekey to the normal toilets/showers my husband found them very unsuitable. The shower was a nightmare, you have no room to dry yourself, the shower tray is so big you have to step back into it to open the door, as said by others before, no ventilation, the floor never dry due to this, the toilets had minute handbasins but large taps, so washing your hands was difficult.
Onto the disabled shower/toilet, I had to pay another £5 for a key, okay no big deal. The key did open the door, but did not lock it behind you or when you left, so anyone could walk in. It is a wet room! very very wet, not one hook, towel rail, nothing. Turned on the shower after having to put my things on top of the bin, within a few seconds the floor was flooded
The water went away from the drain, not into it. The water went under the floor covering which had lifted, very unsafe. The floor had 2 inches of water in it when I left, not for disabled people at all, very dangerous in fact. There wasn't any soap in the dispenser whilst we were there. This was a total nightmare, never again.
We would have asked for a refund and left but their policy is no refunds

I have to agree with the previous reviewer, we have visited this site many, many times and really enjoyed the facilities it has on offer - but the changes they are making are spoiling it not enhancing it.
The toilet block, although shiny and new, is not sufficient for the size of the touring site. There are only three showers and three toilets in each of the mens and ladies.
The size of the shower tray is 75% of the cubicle leaving a minute space to dry and then you have to stand back in the shower to open the door, so either wet feet again or muddy footprints in the shower, so they would be really restrictive for someone trying to shower a small child too, where do they sit/stand while the adult is showering as there is no shower curtain. The shower head sprays low pressure water over and around you, but NOT onto you ! Took ages to rinse the soap and shampoo off.
The handwash basins in the loo cubicles are minute and have two standard size taps over them so you can barely get your hands under them, no good to use the loo cubicle for a strip wash if (and they were) all the showers are being used.
They have closed down the old facilities, including the chemical toilet waste point, so now if you are in the top of the site you have to hike a heavy toilet cartridge all the way across to the new toilet block, we feel they could have at least kept this open for the older field.
The field where they have the new superpitches looks half finished with an unsightly black gravel roadway around it and you are next to the village road for your extra money.
The field opposite currently used by the children for ball games, we overheard it is apparently going to have even more pitches put on it. Where are the children going to play then? or are they trying to make it adult only to get you spending in the clubhouse. Also three toilets and showers would not cope with more pitches.
Some of the pitches are close together on the older field and it can be a struggle to get on your pitch when people are parked in front of their caravans because there is no space at the side. The last time we were there we had to get three people to move their cars so we could get on our pitch, after they stared and watched us struggle for what seemed like ages !
We are not fishermen, but we know a lot of regulars who are and the restrictions on the fishing with all the new static pitches are pushing them to find alternative sites with fishing facilities.
On a positive note - the clubhouse is great and there is always quality entertainment Friday and Saturday nights. The have opened the bar area up now so you can see the act - before if you got a table at the other side of the pillars you could not see. The pool is a great asset and has been tidied up recently as the paint was flaking off the walls and floating in the pool!
Ho hum, so all in all, we are a little disappointed in our very favourite weekend site.
I hope the owners take note of the comments being left here and address some of the issues being raised.

Stayed for 3 nights over the spring bank weekend, me my husband and 2 grandchildren. When arrived at reception got told what pitch number we where on and given leaflets on what entertainment and do's and don't's while in the bar, and paid £20 for the barrier card and key for the shower block which was returned at the end your stay. The pitch was little uneven, great bar and entertainment. Nothing to do for children but perfect place if you love fishing. Toilet/shower block clean but did look new

First visit to this site and not impressed at all. Although work is in progress to update this site, our 'hardstanding' was an old static pitch with dis-used drains sticking up.
With over 30 tourers on site the new toilet & shower block were inadequate (3 toilets & 3 showers) for the whole site, no privacy in between pitches, all squashed in and tight to tow around the site. No playground for children.
Even though their info leaflet stated a departure time of 1pm they came around at 11am to tell me and other tourers to vacate the site by 12 noon as new visitors were needing the pitch.
In the village there was just 1 shop/post office/newspapers that never seemed to open.
3 good pubs in the village, all serving food & all a very short walk from site
The site clubhouse was smart but small seemingly catering for the chalet residents
