Visited The Orchards on 5/7/14 for one weeks camping, this was my first visit to the site, and even though it is a 6 hour journey from my house, will probably visit again. On arrival was met by the very friendly site person, and as the site was surprisingly full, was given the choice of two pitches, I took the one by the trees, and left the one by the toilets for someone else! The toilets were fairly clean with a seemingly never ending supply of hot water, the pot wash sinks are in the same building and what looks like a freezer for cold packs.
This is a very large site being Haven, and all the pitches were quite large and all electric with the bonus of a fresh water tap on each hook-up point, they were also rather flat which was a bonus. The park itself is on a spit of land at the tip of point Clear in Essex and is surrounded by water on three sides. The beach is to the south and the Estuary takes up the other two sides with the marina of Brightlingsea located there. The entertainment complex is a nice walk away and you seem to be divorced from the noise it generates (though I did go out of season!). Next to the touring field is a large grassed area for the kids to play on with a few play items there.
Food wise, there are the usual favourites on site with a Papa Johns that delivers, and right at the end of the site near the point is the ferryboat Inn and café, also a Chinese take away which you pass on the way, a Spar shop, and just outside the main gate another Café. The thing I most enjoyed was the walk around the sea walk which takes in the whole site passing the beach and the quaint sea front properties (the path goes right in front of their windows) round the point and back up along the Estuary taking in the other side of the site. The path is accessed at the main gate by the café, and from the site itself across two bridges which cross the creek. You can hire pedalos to venture into the creek and small lagoon, and there are a couple of lakes on the site.
Nearby you have jaywick, Clacton on sea, Holland on sea, Frinton on sea and Walton on the naze, plus the larger Colchester with its Zoo, Castle and shopping. St Osyth, the nearest village has a number of local shops pubs and a couple of chippies (the Village chippie seems to be the most popular), though I never saw it, there is a small foot ferry which leaves from the point and goes to Mersea and Brightlingsea, and even, as far as I could make out, up into Colchester. All in all a good place to visit.

This place was all wrong for me and it took me a while to figure it out but ultimately, I thought it was badly managed and poorly designed.
Reception staff were friendly and attentive and my 9 yr old daughter and I were located by the dog walking field/recreation area which I must say was fairly pleasant.
The large toilet/wash/shower block is a monstrosity and only serves as a large obstruction to walk around to get to the reception/shop/take-away/swimming pool.
We eventually found our way to the indoor pool but you can forget 'swimming' here - it was full of people just throwing things at each other.
The outdoor pool was a little better and I noticed more people actually wanting to swim, though on the last day myself and another parent asked the 'unattended' kids to stop throwing balls at our children while they were trying to swim - perhaps they should have been guided (by better parents) to the indoor pool.
At the risk of turning this review into a moan, I must express that my daughter and I try to walk and cycle as much as possible but soon realised that the whole island is not pedestrian friendly, if taking the roads, due to no footpaths and after being directed by reception to the nearest pub (35 minutes away) and taking our lives into our hands (no exaggeration) for 40 minutes and upon not finding the pub, turning back and doing the harrowing walk all over again (tired and hungry) I was really rather angry and advised reception not to send parents with children along the road and to try and be more accurate about the pub's location (we were another five mins from it) - I received no sympathy.
We instead went to the on site take-away having had a great meal the previous evening, but the take-away hadn't a clue how long food was going to take and stood around like startled zombies - the young bloke was trying his best to give people accurate times but the older chefs were useless, in my opinion. That said, after sixty minutes, we had another great meal!
On the last day, we discovered a walk through the dog walk area, down a path, through a gate and turned left - an incredibly pleasant countryside walk, following bridleway, footpath and a stream to a beautiful village and guess what, a pub! Why reception had not mentioned this one, I do not know.
All in all then, I will not be going back here.

Well what can I say that most people have already said. The site is fabulous. One of the best we have stayed at. The showers and toilets were immaculate. The reception staff were very helpful, and we liked the way a member of staff actually walked down to show us our pitch. The shop was very handy and the take away was very good and at a reasonable price. We enjoyed some lovely walks from the site. We will come back again and will recommend it to our friends.

This is a excellent site for new or experienced campers.
The wash area is better than my own home !
The only negative I could give would be our pitch was on a hill, but when we asked if we can be moved the very helpful staff offered us a new pitch strait away even though it was peak time.
The swimming pools and play areas were very clean and maintained to a very high standard.
When speaking to the other campers most had been coming to this site for years, which speaks massive volumes to the pull of this site.
Would recommend this site to all.

Just returned from a week here. Had a great time. The area is beautiful. We had a lovely view across the rolling countryside from our pitch. We prefer the quieter, less touristy western side of the island and this site is only a short drive to the lovely south coast, it's also only about 20 mins from the Needles.
There is no clubhouse or evening entertainment - one reason we chose this site! The children loved the pools. Pool areas were all clean and well maintained. Use of the pools was included in the pitch price, I saw that earlier reviewers were charged so I guess this is something that has changed recently. There is a toddler play frame and one for older children. Our 6 and 7 year olds enjoyed both.
Facilities block was excellent, very modern and well maintained. Very clean, especially considering the site was busy. Shower cubicles were huge, with plenty of room to shower the children without getting clothes, shoes, or me, wet! Never had to queue.
Shop was useful for the basics and small number of souvenirs and pocket money toys for the children to buy. Also sold pool/beach toys, very useful.
Can't comment on the on-site takeaway as we didn't use it. Can recommend 'Rainbow' fish and chips in Freshwater - good sized portions, good service.
Reception staff were friendly and helpful, from booking to 'checking out'.
We were lucky that the site was not full when we stayed as this meant we had extra space around our pitch. I imagine some pitches could feel a little jammed in if all were full. However, it is the school summer holidays and to be anticipated and I think this is only a minor negative on an otherwise excellent site.
Would we go back? Yes, definitely.

From reading the previous couple of reviews, I think this site has improved since last year.
We stayed over half term and found it a very pleasant site. It was busy but we didn't feel crowded on our pitch - they're not hugely private as the fields are quite open but they're big enough. All well kept and tidy with nice lush grass. There's a big open field at the back (possibly used for overflow camping at really busy times) where the kids could take their footballs and play without disturbing other campers. Lots of families playing frisbee etc in the main field though and a nice friendly feel to the site.
Shower and toilet blocks are absolutely top notch, the best we have seen on any campsite. Loved the music, it felt very welcoming especially for those late night visits!
With our children aged 8 and 7, we found the indoor pool a nice extra (you can swim an hour for free, there is a wristband system to stop it getting too crowded) and I am sure the outdoor pool would be great in better weather. Shop is well stocked and friendly. Takeaway was a disappointment, very busy and food not very nice.
It's a good position for exploring the Island. Of the nearby pubs, our favourite is the New Inn at Shalfleet - fantastic local food.

We visited The Orchards for a 4 night stay during the October half term
We booked our ferry/accommodation through The Orchards and was automatically allocated a hardstanding pitch due to the time of year (if booking with the ferry company you are asked if you would like either a grass or hardstanding pitch and charged an additional £10 if you request the hardstanding)
On arrival the reception staff were really warm and welcoming. We were given all the information we needed regarding the site and the local area and shown to our pitch in person by the receptionist.
Our pitch was flat and we had adequate space between our van and the caravan next to us.
We have stayed on many campsites and we found the facilities in the shower block are some of the best we have seen. They were spotlessly clean with plenty of space in the washing/shower areas.
The location of The Orchards allowed easy reach to all over the island. The one downpoint for us was that their was no local shop or pub in walking distance (though the shop on site had any basics you might need)
If you have children with you we found The Horse and Groom pub (about a 5 to 10 minute drive away) to be really friendly and welcoming. The food was plentiful and their was a lovely outdoor play area with bouncy castle as well as indoor games.
We had a lovely time while staying at The Orchards and would recommend it to anyone.

On arrival we received a warm welcome. After a quick run through of rules regarding the pools, we were shown to our pitch.
The lady disappeared before we had even got out the car so no chance of mentioning if the pitch was suitable or not. As it was, the pitch was somewhat further from facilities than we had requested. It was all up hill too. However we decided to stay put.
Our pitch appeared level, that was until we got into bed and discovered actually it wasn't. Not too much of a problem though, we just slept the other way round.
The new facilities block is lovely. Plenty of space, and never had to wait. The music is a nice idea but was never loud enough to actually hear unless directly under the speaker.
Shop was very useful, and reasonably priced. We only got to try the takeaway once but again not too expensive and the food was quite tasty.
Pools were also nice. The outdoor one was used most as we had glorious weather. A few loungers would have been a nice touch. The rule regarding all under 16s needing supervision was a bit of a pain, but it appeared no one checked, so not many complied.
It appeared that many of their rules were overlooked. Despite a 'quiet after 11' policy, we had a number of noisy tents nearby that sat around until gone 12 each night. And on one night we had to put up with the lady who decided to have a full blown conversation on her phone at 1am. No idea who it was, but I would like to say Thanks to the man that asked her to 'Shut Up! at 3am'.
They also like to pack you in. Sometimes without even a decent gap between tents. Our pitch wasn't that large, same with neighbouring pitches. This meant we all had to park in front of our pitches. But due to no area to turn around, we all had no choice but to reverse down the hill into our spots. It appears they have only recently started using the centre of the field as pitches, so guess this was not a problem before. Maybe they should re think! Sitting outside the tent was a bit awkward. Not only is there lack of space due to the slopes but you tend to end up sat starting at your neighbour just a few feet away.
Overall, we would return. Maybe next time we would have more considerate neighbours, and also now we know the layout we could perhaps be more specific about where we would like to be pitched.

We recently returned from a 10night stay at this site. Our first impression was that the reception staff were friendly and helpful and the site clean.
We were pitched in the lower field under a huge tree (not to be recommended) due to the wind and noise from the rain. Our pitch was not well kept; it had pot holes in it which we had to fill ourselves with broken slabs found in the edge-row.
The facilities were ok but disappointed that the on-site shop and take away appeared to be closed more than they were open.
We spent a lot of time in the outdoor pool; this was nice but needs attention (not very well heated and years of grime on the curved slabs and tiles missing). The indoor pool is simply too small for the size of the site and should be included in the price of the holiday - we object to paying for extras on site!
There are a lot of loose slabs on the footpath behind the pool which also has overgrown shrubs overhanging. The showers/toilets/ washing facilities are excellent. The pool room was good fun but has very poor lighting as does the table tennis room.
We were told by reception staff that it was ok to play ball games on the small recreation area in front of our pitch only to be told to stop by the same reception staff after other campers complained.
Most of the grounds staff barely acknowledged our presence ie a passing good morning or hello would have been nice. Now I know you can't pick your fellow campers but there were a lot of teenagers on site during our stay and with a recreation area immediately behind our pitch it was quite noisy in the evening. The same teenagers swore like it was second nature to them and had little or no regard to others around them. We complained to the reception staff who appeared to sort it only for the same incident to repeat itself over the following days.
This review probably reads more like a rant. It's not meant to. The Orchards is a pleasant site; I particularly enjoyed its compactness compared to other much larger sites but we shall not return.

Visited this site in May, when the weather was not too great. Originally booked a grass pitch, but on arrival, the wardens sensibly suggested that following the weeks of rain, a hardstanding might be a more comfortable experience.
Toilet/shower block has to be the most luxurious anywhere. Each shower cubicle contains its own wash basin, which is great as you don't have to pack up all your kit then find a basin outside the cubicle to shave. The cubicles are actually larger than our shower-room at home!
The outdoor pool was not yet open - too early in the year. The indoor pool was warm and not in the least crowded at a modest cost of £1.50 each.
All aspects of the site were clean and well-maintained. We used to visit this site about 12 years ago when the kids were small and were pleased to see that its standards have not dropped, despite a change of ownership.
The takeaway sells standard 'something and chips' fare but is very useful if you fancy a full English breakfast but can't be bothered to wash up the pans. Discovered several local pubs that offer excellent meals.
The IOW is one of our favourite destinations. It seems to have been frozen in time a bit. The Orchards is on the quieter west side of the island but being country folk, we prefer that.
We can recommend the guided walks that were being run on some mornings while we were there. So much more interesting to take a walk with someone who has some local knowledge. Be warned though, this part of the IOW is not at all flat!
We will certainly use this site again when we visit the IOW.
