We stayed at this site for 5 nights during the Easter holidays with our daughters (8 and 4). The site is well positioned and has lovely views across open countryside. The hard standing pitches are tiered, but the grass field is on a slope, which can be difficult for tent owners!

While we were there the brand new facilities block opened, which was lovely - all brand new toilets, showers, washing facilities, and very useful for campers - a drying room!

We took the kids swimming in the campsite pool, which is obviously used by the local community as well. Although the pool is small, is is very clean, and a nice way to spend an afternoon when the weather isn't so good.

The site shop is well stocked and sells everything you need, and the take away food is fine. I would say the kids playground could be improved as it didn't have much equipment.

We would return to this site as it was a good base to explore the island, and the facilities on the whole were excellent. We booked it through the Red funnel website as a ferry and camping deal, which made it good value for money.

Stayed here for two weeks, going by reviews and fact it is caravan club affiliated, and only '5 star' site on the island was expecting great things.

Pros-Staff very helpful, polite. Site and toilets kept very clean by small army of local workers. Choice of outdoor/indoor pools. Takeaway/restuarant okay, on-site shop very good value for money.Arcade (with machines from the 80's according to my son) pool room etc. Good for kids and there seemed to be no problems with teenagers congregating there in the evenings.

Cons-Pitch was tiny, with car, van and awning no space left at all. Also very concerned about proximity of neighbouring unit, the officials from the C & CC would have had a fit, with their 6m rule! What annoyed me was the fact that there were bigger pitches but they were not offered, there seemed to be no correlation between size of unit and pitch. Some tents had bigger pitches than us!

Site overall felt very tired. Okay they are halfway through building new giant washblock, but the facilities that exist now were totally inadequate. In our area only two washing up sinks, which meant long queues morning and evening. Toilets and showers tired and worn out. If washblock quality is important to you, wait for new ones to be finished before staying here.

Outdoor pool-cold. Dont know if they were trying to save money, but the weather was awful and no attempt was made to make the outdoor pool warm enough.

They say there is a cafe at the indoor pool - the pool receptionist operating an instant coffee machine does not constitute a cafe.

Overall site was okay but not as good as we expected . That may also be a fair way of summing up the island as a whole. Be prepared in peak months to have to queue for everything, (one Sunday we had to visit 6 different pubs for lunch before we could even find one with parking spaces left!) and also don't expect things to be ultra modern. A lot of the attractions such as the Zoo, Needles Park and some beach facilities are very tired and run down, it just left us feeling that the Isle of Wight experience was okay, but not great.

This was our fourth year at this site. We love coming here so much we rebook on site for the following year. The staff, except for the occasional one, has remained the same since our first visit. They are always extremely helpful. Our kids look forward to our holiday here every year.

Two points :-

Use your Tesco clubcard deals vouchers at four locations on the island.

Visit The Chequers Inn at Niton for an excellent carvery dinner - look in Isle of Wight guide for serving days.

We are hoping for a bit better weather next year!

We have just spent 4 days on this site and it is excellent. The site is clean, well maintained with very helpful & friendly staff present daily. The site is easy to get to but just nicely out of the way of the crowds and queues. We had no problem exploring all corners of the island from it.

I can imagine the new toilet and amenities block will be an excellent facility. However up until then “the old ones” are still of a very high standard, to the extent that they are superior to a massive proportion of the facilities on many other sites that have no plans to upgrade. Examples being the temporary toilets and showers which are in portakabins but are well specified and kept immaculate by the cleaning team. I took a deep breath when I saw the sign on the door “temporary chemical disposal point” but again no problems, neat clean and far better than many other sites permanent facilities.

I do not understand where the complaints of small pitches come from (here and other reviews). I had to check that the area we were nominated (on the grassed area) was all ours! The marked pitch allowed us to keep the van 2 foot inside one boundary, put the awning up with more than enough room to spare and if we’d wanted park the car next to it. As it happened we left that as a “lounging area” (as weather was great) and parked the car in the ample area to the front of the van well clear of the road. If I still hadn’t had enough room the car would have gone onto the nearby car parking. What the staff appeared to be doing was putting people on alternate pitches which make them feel even more spacious so we had no neighbours for two nights and even when one arrived with a fair sized van they were not in any way intrusive to us.

One word of caution however. There were some pitches opposite us that were overshadowed by very large mature trees and in the shade for all but a couple of hours in the morning.

I didn’t use the pools but like the rest of the site appeared immaculate. The shop was good value to the extent that I bought a new aquaroll filler hose for less than my local dealer sells them for!

IOW in general is a great place, generally a great friendly atmosphere. A few things to watch out for though. You get the feeling that some places are after your money at every turn. A visit out anywhere can be expensive once car parking, entrance fees for this that and the other are paid, much the same as anywhere else I suppose but one example of this is the Needles area. You travel there to see this geological wonder but once there you’re almost trapped. The road ends and your in their car park £3. There’s no other parking area and no other way of going to see them, the Old Gun Battery or the Marconi monument! Then into the “fun park” (which you have to walk through) where nothing is free. Even a chair lift for the couple of hundred metres to the beach (not a steep walk) is £3 each way per person. Take the kids there, it will really cost you and its not as if they built or maintain the Needles is it?!

Many facilities on the island also seem to have a laid back approach to opening so check in advance. The Old Gun Battery at the Needles is open and free all the signs say, unless you visit on a Monday when we did when it’s always closed apparently! St Catherine’s Lighthouse is open to visitors the signs all say until you walk down the path to it and the sign tells you quite clearly it’s closed Wednesday….Guess when we visited!

Finally if you are towing and tempted to take the chain ferry from West to East Cowes….DONT. All the signs on approach say max weight 10t, no restrictions on anything signed up until you are about to get onto it and the man tells you no caravans due to the angle of approach . Very helpful though, gave us a hand to turn the van around and told us he’s already asked the council to put up signs to stop myself and the on average, 3 further vans that will be trying that day.

All of that said, IOW? Brilliant place. Orchards? Excellent place to base yourself, we intend to make a return trip asap.

We've been to the Orchards holiday park every year for the last 3 years, and have booked again for this year.

The park is clean, the staff are smily and friendly and their shop has a wide variety of spares if your unit has issues. For example last year big storms almost blew our awning off, fortunately they had storm straps in store and we were all setup in now time.

The pools are nice, clean and warm and our kids loved the jacuzzi. When we camped we asked to be near the sandpit so we could watch our kids as they played. There is also a second larger playground area which you can also use.

The park is close to most local attractions, and the local pottery cafe is a great place on rainy days with the kids (in fact I probably enjoyed it more than them)

All in all, we cant see a reason to go to a different campsite in the isle of wight. So we'll keep on going back.

Nice rural setting with voog views, and unlike many sites on gentle slopes, Orchards has its hardstandings well-levelled with good space for awning and tow-car.

Toilets/showers are modern, clean and warm. The showers work well and you don't have to pay extra to use them, unlike some sites I've been to. I understand next season there will be a bigger, brand-new facilities block. Adjoining fields good for dog-walkers. Water-points in good supply well spaced around the site so no long walks to fill your water containers! Plus many well-lit fire-points also. The site shop has better selection than many sites. There is a restaurant/takeaway on site which is open through the day until well into the evening and is reasonably priced. The indoor swimming pool has a good coffee-shop, and although we visited in a freezing March so didn't use it, I expect the outdoor pool and paddling-pool will be well-used in warmer times. Although our own children are grown-up I noticed that the childrens play-areas have plenty of apparatus for youngsters. There are two games-rooms, with pool tables and table-tennis . The staff are friendly and helpful without being pushy.

The only minor point I noticed is that the indoor awimming pool is not big enough for adults wishing to swim vigorous lengths, but for family fun it is fine.

All in all I would recommend this site very highly, and if we visit the Isle of Wight again we will certainly return here.

A fantastic site, the people could not be friendlier.

The weather was not great during our visit so we took full advantage of the indoor pool on many days - whilst not the biggest pool in the world it is warm, clean and well policed to make it fun for every body.

The site is on quite a slope with tiered pitches, so be warned getting on and off can take a bit of thinking about and time. I was glad to have a mover on our twin axle to get that into place!

The take away offers excellent food at very reasonable prices.

The shop is expensive with little in the way of special offers, but is incredibly well stocked and open for realistic hours.

I did not use the showers at all as we were on a fully serviced pitch and saw little point in taking an outside shower to get to the site ones, but from what I saw they were well equipped, clean and never appeared to be too busy.

It's a long way for us from the North-east of England, but since my sister lives on the island I think we'll be returning soon.

Well there has to one dissenting voice in amongst the happy ones and I'm afraid mine is it. We found the orchards not to be all that great, the shower blocks were in serious need of updating with the top block of male showers not working for the duration of our stay. When asked why the reply was "we're waiting for a part" but when another staff member was asked the real reason was that the plumber was on holiday, so no other plumbers must reside on the island?.If they were given a good clean more than once a a day that would of helped. The pools are of a high quality so if you have small children this is a good point, but the lack of privacy caused by backing van against van which means you need to keep your rear window blind shut is a pain. One family asked why the Jacuzzi was not on and were told that it could only be put on for 15 minutes at a time due to 'health and safety' reasons, when someone different asked the next day the real reason seems to be that 'it costs a lot in electricity to run'.Not good!. The site is in a lovely spot with good views over the surrounding countryside, but with hindsight we would of stayed on the west of the island closer to most of the coastal towns, this would of saved a great deal of time lost through driving everyday. Please don't think we are some stuck-up couple that find fault at every site, this is not the case I'm just telling it the way we saw it.

We have stayed at this site on a number of occasions and have never been dissapointed. It is always very clean and immaculate. The staff very friendly and helpful. The views of the rolling hills and countryside from the site are outstanding. We like this site as it is always very peaceful and quite. There are two good dog exercise areas. The local pubs are a bit of a long walk so we have always used the local social club which is right next door. It is small but very friendly. You just pay a temporary membership fee of £2.50 before you go. The toilets and showers are always very clean. We will definitely visit again.

 Caravan Club associated site.

Mixture of hardstanding and grass pitches, some superpitches, some statics in separate area at entrance to site. Pitch size was considerably smaller than on normal CC sites, although there was still a reasonable gap between units.

Facilities were all very good - heated loo shower/block - 3 blocks in peak season but only 2 open when we went. Covered dishwashing.

No motorhome service point as such, but there is a water point where you can park beside it to fill up.

Bus stops at the post office/general store outside the site (I think it is something like a 2-hourly service or was when we were there before Easter - maybe more in season?)

Outdoor swimming pool open in main season (free) and indoor pool open all year (charge). Looked nice but didn't try it. Paddling pool.

Table tennis, pool, tv room, few arcade-type machines. Boules pitch, playing field, dog-walking areas.

Licensed shop was well stocked with basic groceries as well as holiday stuff and not badly priced for a campsite store.

Small takeaway/food bar with covered outdoor seating only. Food was delicious and reasonably priced.

Overall a nice site and I would happily stay again but not in peak season because I prefer sites with a more spacious feel.
