We loved this camp site. It's one of the friendliest we have stayed at and certainly one of the best equipped and cleanest. It's small but nicely laid out with pleasant views down the valley and a great dog walk up a small hill just around the corner. We came for 4 nights and ended up staying for around 10 nights.

The owners, Hamish and Margaret, couldn't have been more welcoming and their part-time helpers, Helen and Gary, went out of their way to be helpful and friendly. We came back one day to find our washing had kindly been taken in from the line and put on an airer due to a shower.

For tenters this must be a dream site as there's everything you could need in the large hangar next to the loo/shower facilities. There's indoor space to sit and eat and read and a microwave, kettle, fridge/freezer and all sorts. The washing machine is £2 as previously mentioned which is very helpful for people like us on a big tour when laundrettes can be difficult to find.

The loo and shower were spotless - the cleanest we have ever encountered.

We weren't taking electric as we have solar panels so the price of £12 was incredibly good value.

A drive up to Wanlockhead is a must, Durisdeer is lovely and we liked Kippford very much. Drives through the Galloway Forest Park are impressive.

This was the first place we stayed on our long tour through Scotland and I imagine it will be very difficult to beat. Thank you to everyone at Red Squirrel. (We didn't see a Red Squirrel this time, maybe next time).

This is a very small but perfectly formed site which is just amazingly good but it's not called Glenmidge for nothing!

The facilities are really excellent with free wifi, a washing machine at £2 per wash, charging plugs for phones etc and the loo and shower are the cleanest I've ever seen. There's also a shelf of books to borrow. The wardens and the owners are very friendly indeed.

The site itself offers a chance to observe wildlife including red squirrels.

Offsite there are ample opportunities for walking and cycling from the site itself and Loch Glen is a reasonable distance for canoes and kayaks.

Dumfries is a short drive away and has all the usual supermarkets and a well-stocked tourist information facility.

Drumlanrig Castle is nearby and there are otters in the river that runs alongside it.

Definitely a site to visit and return to. Just one thing. Our calor gas ran out and there seems to be a shortage locally. We finally got some from a garden centre in Castle Douglas.

Stayed here for the weekend Thursday to Sunday, they showed us round the site and helped us set up the electric. Good facilities, spotless and clean. Some good wildlife, blackbird in particular singing his heart out. Shop under two miles, pub slightly further, Dumfries under ten miles, local taxi will take you there & back. Good wee site well worth a visit if passing by.

We stayed here for two nights and were made to feel very welcome by the lovely couple who live full time in their motorhome and run the site. We were shown around and saw the toilet, shower room, barn with fridge and cooking area and space for drying clothes. We were invited to leave our bikes under cover there if we wanted to. The camping area was a good flat field with electric hook ups at regular intervals. The site is right next to a single track road but the road is very quiet and hardly has any passing traffic, we particularly enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and the songs of many birds. Lovely. We found the people very friendly and helpful when we had some electrical issues. Thank you! Although the site is advertised as adults only, there were a couple of kids there: though it must be said they were very quiet and well behaved. The site is small, intimate, sheltered and surrounded by a quiet hamlet of lovely houses. We really enjoyed peaceful cycles around the area and had a great time. Thanks folks :)

We stayed for 3 nights en route to The North. A great find which was well documented in a recent MMM. The owners Hamish & Margaret and their helpers Helen & Gary all proved to be great hosts ready to spend time to help and to exchange touring stories. The facilities were great, pitches level with lots of space. There are several good walks in the area and sufficient local shops and a pub about 2 miles away. The honey is well worth trying. We have added the site to our list of 'ones to return to' Mae & Bill Morton

We stayed at Red Squirrel Campsite in July 2014 for 5 nights. What can we say, beautifully maintained and a warm welcome from both Gary & Ellen (on site help and lovely people) and Hamish & Margaret (site owners & fantastic hosts). Can't fault the facilities, as mentioned the barn area is fantastic and has Everything you need (table, chairs, sofa, socket to charge phone etc, large chest freezer, fridge, toaster, microwave, 2 ring electric hob, kettle, sink with hot water, washing machine is £2, indoor clothes horse for drying & outside a rotary washing line), immaculate shower (hooks & bench to sit on) & toilet and although there is only one of each this site is small (adult only) and therefore really wasn't an issue.

Lots of lovely walks in the surrounding area (beware of the frisky cows!) and it's about a 20 min drive to Ae Forest if you're the cycling type (Ae café is closed on Mondays btw), my partner also cycled Maibe & Dalbeatie. There is also Drumlanrig Castle which is about 7 miles away which also has mtb routes.

We pitched near the rotary washing line at the front of the site which I think is mainly for campers/motor homes but is an ideal spot to watch the Red squirrels and their antics in the mornings. Note that the ground is quite rocky below and it took a while to get the pegs inserted (apparently it's all about angles), but we got there in the end.

Hamish is a keen Beekeeper of over 30 years and whilst my partner was out on one of his rides I tagged along with him to help with his bees. I spent a brilliant afternoon suited up in all the gear collecting honey and trying to spot the Queen in 'The Naughty Hive', before heading back to site to watch how the honey was removed. The honey is wonderful and we bought a couple of jars to bring home.

Dumfries is a few miles away where there is a large Tesco and other large stores. There is a fish van which calls at the campsite on a Wednesday and he also sells eggs and samphire, he'll toot his horn when he's there. There's also a small shop, cafe and Post Office a couple of miles down the road where you can purchase the usual groceries. I tried to withdraw money from my Post Office account, but apparently the Post Office had none!. Go figure that out!

Anyway, we had a great time at this campsite and at £12 per night for 2 people and our dog in a Voyager 6 tent, shower and use of barn facilities, except washing machine included in the price, we thought it good value and will definitely be returning on our next visit to Scotland.

We stayed here end of June, beginning of July. Great site, we had a fantastic welcome and it was so friendly, we are still new to caravanning but the help on offer was superb. The site is immaculate and clean, all the time, it is stunningly beautiful and quiet, you may hear the odd tractor going by but that is it.

They only have 1 loo and 1 shower, but both are outstanding, these people really do care, and work very hard at keeping it immaculate. There is somewhere to hang your clothes. They also have an amazing barn that has a big table and chairs, washing machine, tumble dryer, oven and hob, sink etc, they have really thought of everything to make your stay as easy as possible, plus the wildlife is on your doorstep, we were amazed! The night sky is to die for! We even had quite a few relatives come visit us and they took it all in there stride, I really have no negatives to tell you because there are none, we will definitely go back and stay. Adult only site.

Fantastic little site ideal for some peace and quiet but not too far from Dumfries and other areas for sight sightseeing. We were just there for a a weekend break and wanted to relax. Facilities well maintained, hot shower included in the price. The owners were really cheery and provided us with maps of lovely walks from the site.

(We managed to get a TV reception and 3g on the Three network)

Can't wait to get back!

Excellent little site in a beautiful location. Owners were away on a celebration trip but a caravan resident Tom welcomed us and showed us around. Previous reviews which we read before we booked really say it all. We were only staying for one night but we would like to come back and stay longer.

The narrow roads leading to the site were very quiet in both directions and present no difficulties.

It is a gem.

Lovely site in a small settlement with very friendly owner. Very quiet with simple, clean facilities. Maps of local walks are available to borrow. Red squirrels will keep you entertained for hours!

Toilet / shower is small, but clean and adequate for the size of site. Full kitchen facilities are available in the barn along with table and chairs (a god-send when I was motorbike touring with a small tent a few years ago!).
