We are seasoned campers used to the open spaces and this was our first visit to the site.
We were attracted to the site by the many excellent previous reviews that comprehensively cover all the aspects of the site. We can confirm the previous reviews are true and accurate and there would be no value in repeating them here. The modern barn really does have most of the facilities you have at home. Like the lady cyclists we were surprised at how small the site is and it did its best but struggled to accommodate caravans and tents. It is a kind of triangular shape with a road on two of its sides and a driveway on the third. We left after a week-end because for us it felt a little too much like back garden camping.

Had a wonderful time here at Glenmidge and hardly a midgie in sight! Hamish and Margaret are great hosts and keep the site lovely. Good shower and great washing up area with everything you would need if you had a tent. There is also a washing machine to use if you need to and plenty of information about local area.
The site takes caravans and tents and has good flat grass with electric hook ups. Hamish is a beekeeper and will sell you a jar of his honey to take home. We saw our first red squirrel of the year (a rare treat)
Went to Drumlargin House which is well worth a day out and also went to the Moffat Classic Car show which was on the weekend we went, Moffat is a lovely wee town and well worth a visit.
There are great drives around the area of Glenmidge and some of the wee villages and hamlets are stunning. If you want larger shopping then Dumfries is the place to go with the usual supermarkets and a Marks and Spencer.
If you want an afternoon of peace and quiet then just stay on the site, sit back and do nothing other than perhaps have a wee snooze.
We will return to this site next time we are in the area and I would thoroughly recommend it as a stopover either travelling north or south or if you just want a quiet relaxing break away from the rat race.

Our first time camping in our old autosleeper, and we broke down just inside the site entrance, red faces all round.
The site owners however couldn't have been nicer and more helpful, and allowed us to use their home 'phone to call out the AA. Just a dodgy earth strap, and once a new one was fitted we were fine. During the time we were waiting Hamish regularly came over to offer moral support, and to assure us we would be ok.
This is a great site, clean, tidy and quiet, in a great location run by genuinely nice people who are very experienced campers. Good choice if, like us, it's your first time. We will be back. (and by the way, we have just returned from our planned adventure to the Western Isles in old 'Dora' who started first time and didn't even cough!)

If its peace in a beautiful border setting you are after then Glenmidge campsite is for you, The owners are very helpful.
The site is only small, but ideal for tents, small caravans and campers. The ablutions are again small but clean at all times.
Their is an area in the shed next to the shower where you can wash your dishes and cook if the weather is inclement.
The campsite is isolated in the glen, a local shop and nice pub are about 2 miles away.
All in all its a great site with friendly people and its has a very reasonable tariff.

Lovely site, lovely people. If you are looking for a tucked away site in a pretty setting with simple facilities then this is it. We stayed for 1 night on our way up to the Highlands and were not disappointed. EHU available but note that you are in a digital signal reception area if using a TV.
Toilet, shower, washing up facilities, all clean and tidy with microwave available for use too.
Would certainly stay over again

Me and my partner(James)would first like to thank Hamish and Margaret for making our stay in Scotland so nice. They are both very welcoming and happy to help you. We are planning are next trip to Scotland and we are going to be staying here again. We do not have any negative comments about the site. A small campsite and only one toilet and one shower, also included are washing-up facilities, all with hot water provided, however the facilities are immaculate. Wildlife is all around the camp site. Plenty to see and plenty to do, Castles, Abbey's, and historic buildings.

Again, cannot find any fault with this site. Arrived home today after staying there for a long weekend and wished we had booked for a week. The surrounding area is beautiful and even the most unlikely walk fans (i.E. Me!) will find something of interest to keep wandering along. We spotted quails, peasants, some local moggies and heard an indignant owl at night.
The wet barn is great with a freezer and fridge facility for campers - very handy for campers who don't have such items tucked away in their tent. The toilet and shower were very clean and were cleaned every morning. Margaret and Hamish, the owners, are a lovely couple and have lived in the area for 40 years. If you're too shy to ask them about attractions, then there's a shelf in the wet barn with areas helpfully labelled 'Walks' and 'Fish'. This is filled to the brim with brochures etc.
The Auldgirth Inn has lovely food but we were told they only served food on Mondays when they had residents. So it may bode well to check before you set off there with a rumble in your tum. There's also a tearoom beside the Auldgirth shop and they do a scrummy coffee cake.
There's a 24 hour Tesco on the outskirts of Dumfries and only 10 minutes by car. Handy to know if your air bed is bust and you need a replacement at 10pm on a Sunday.
Two nearby attractions worth going to: Drumlanrig Castle, scene of Scotland's most famous art robbery. Make sure you take the tour which starts on the hour from 11am to 4pm. Our guide did an excellent time and had an evident passion for the castle's history. The entry fee of £8 to look round the castle and grounds was a bargain. In nearby Thornhill the Happy Potter Cafe was a great place to spend a couple of hours away. It's a form of paint-your-own-pottery but it keep myself and the boyfriend amused for a couple of hours. It can take a day and a bit for items to be fired in the kiln but items can be posted to you if you're on your way home before the collection day.
Alas, we have no time to pay another visit before it starts getting chilly. But we shall be back again and for a week this time!

We have just returned from a very enjoyable week on this site. Our pitch was directly next to the red squirrel box and we had a lovely view of the comings and goings! The facilities were clean and the site well maintained.Everyone on the site was really friendly but if you want privacy you can have that too. Hamish and Margaret were very nice indeed.I work as a children's nanny so it was a very pleasant change to find a child-free site.
We will definitely return to this lovely wee site and bring lots of citronella candles with us!

Visited this site a few days ago.
Echo most of the other comments made by previous reviewers.
Quiet, secluded & very clean. Toilet & shower are spotless all the time.
Hamish has his old work shed stocked out with fridge/freezer, cooking facilities & sink for tenters & anyone who cares to use it! He also has maps, tourist info etc there too.
Hamish is a real character!
If you want peace & quiet this is the place to be.
Well stocked shop 2 miles away on the A76 at Auldgirth.

A great little site to get away from it all and go fishing. The site is in beautiful surroundings, peaceful, clean and well run by the friendly owners. It's a short drive to the village of Auldgirth & the Auldgirth Inn where the service is friendly, there are a couple of cask conditioned real ales on tap & the steak, sausage & ale pie with herb pastry is delicious. There is loads of Salmon & Trout fishing within very easy reach at very affordable prices. I spent £10 and had a great day fly fishing for Rainbows at the Drum fishery on the Dalswinton Estate about 4 miles from the site but I could have fished on the rivers Nith or Annan for Salmon for virtually the same price. Hamish will happily give you information on what's available, where. We really enjoyed our stay and will definitely visit again.
